The 35-year-old actress continued, “I don’t remember a mass shooting in Australia since they overhauled the gun laws. We, as a country, need to find a way to do better.”
The oft-discussed Jill and Jessa Duggar spinoff of 19 Kids and Counting was shot down, as we know, but for a most surprising reason. Last week’s news that TLC canceled 19 Kids and Counting was not surprising, given the scandal that had left it in limbo for two months. Josh Duggar molested five underage girls a decade ago. Four of the victims were his own sisters. This story only came to light in May. From then on, the Duggars’ fall was as abrupt as it was ugly. Given the religious family’s strong views on sexuality, Josh’s actions and his family’s efforts to hide them left a bad taste with many fans. Moreover, patriarch Jim Bob – always seen as an upstanding figure, if a polarizing one – came under fire for mishandling the situation. Nevertheless, there was talk that the TV show would shift from Jim Bob’s family to his married adult daughters Jill and Jessa Duggar. Given that this was sort of happening anyway, with the Duggar daughters getting more and more screen time, spinoff chatter began. At TLC, a Jill and Jessa spinoff was indeed discussed during the “near-constant” and “intense” conversations about the show’s future. A source who has worked closely with the family says many people loved the idea, but one key figure in particular was not on board. None other than Jim Bob Duggar was not a fan of the Jill and Jessa spin-off idea, and his implicit objection effectively left it DOA. “He absolutely wanted to be back on TV and was never thrilled about the show suddenly shifting focus,” the source says of Jim Bob. The shocking revelation comes amid talk that Jim Bob Duggar is planning the show’s return already via a multi-pronged PR offensive. Guess he wasn’t ready to cede the spotlight to his offspring? Perhaps sensing the unlikelihood of an imminent spinoff, Jill and husband Derick took their newborn baby son to Central America. “And with that, one half of any potential new show was gone,” the source adds, noting that it officially died with their mission trip. As for the pregnant Jessa, she “is clearly [one of the stars] in the family: beautiful, smart, strong-willed,” says the insider. However: “She may be slightly more free-spirited than your average Duggar, but she is firmly, centrally a part of the family , as is her husband.” Even though their series has been canceled and there are no confirmed spin-offs on the horizon, the Duggars aren’t going away. We know they will return to the network that made them stars at least once in the near future as part of a documentary feature. “They’re happy to show that this did not scar them permanently,” the source says of the TLC special about child abuse survivors. Voodoo Priest Raped Girl To Cleanse Her Of Evil Spirits A self-proclaimed voodoo priest in South Florida was charged with sexual battery last month after allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl while claiming it was to “cleanse evil spirits.” Via PIX 11 : Police in the city of Sunrise revealed at a press conference Friday that Brogenet Cinor convinced a girl, who is now 16, and her mother that he has healing powers back in 2009. According to the Sun-Sentinel, Cinor told the girl and her mother he could feel evil spirits coming from the girl during a spiritual consultation. He then took her into a tiki-style backyard shed and had sex with her, police say. After the incident, the girl told her mom, who confronted Cinor. However, the voodoo man threatened to curse the woman if she went to authorities. “He was using the victims’ belief in voodoo and curses,”Sunrise police Officer Cindi McCue told the Sun-Sentinel. “They believed they could die if they didn’t follow his instructions.” It was only years later, after the girl told her father about what happened during the “voodoo consultation,” that police learned of the alleged assault. This isn’t the only time Cinor, who’s been practicing as a voodoo priest in the area for at least a decade, has used fear to coerce women into sex, police say. Two years ago, two separate women told police they had sex with Cinor after he told them they needed a spiritual cleansing. One of the women, who said Cinor told her she would die if she didn’t have sex with him, became pregnant. She said Cinor later gave her $500 to get an abortion. Prosecutors did not pursue charges in either case. Lock this sicko up!!!!!!!!!!!
A Texas man and woman were arrested on Wednesday for posing as dentists in Dallas and Houston after they left a patient severely injured. Authorities say Mario Alberto Sabillon-Mejia, 33, and his “assistant” Tiffany Gonzalez both face prison time for offering discount dental care. When Erika Martinez had a toothache that had been bothering her, she received a $9,000 quote from a dentist … then turned to Facebook. Can anyone recommend cheaper services, she pleaded?! A woman, allegedly Gonzalez, reached out and offered to do the procedure for $1,500. How could she say no to that kind of deal, right? Martinez claims Sabillon-Mejia and Gonzalez showed up May 25, administered a mild anesthetic and then pulled five of her teeth out. They allegedly rinsed their tools in Martinez’s sink and offered her some important instructions for post-extraction care before they left. “Just not to eat pork, and that was it,” Martinez recalled. According to Martinez, she asked them to stop the painful procedure, but the couple refused. She even claims she fainted at one point. “The truth is, it felt like it lasted years,” Martinez said. “It was horrible pain. Very traumatic.” She didn’t report them to police until June 3, when the shady pair allegedly gave the woman a tooth mold and demanded another $500. That’s when she became suspicious and called the cops. Martinez learned they didn’t have licenses, and “felt very lucky to be alive.” Police believe Sabillon-Mejia was “just getting his experience by practicing” on people that hired him,” Dallas Police Lt. Tony Crawford said. “He wanted to be a dentist, I’m assuming.” Just the same, Sabillon-Mejia and Gonzalez are charged with practicing medicine without a license, a very serious felony offense. Martinez needs extensive medical and dental treatment to heal from her injuries, and police are urging other victims to come forward. View Slideshow: Strange But True News Hall of Fame
We pray that people of all colors will be able to live together in peace and harmony. So said Paul McCartney on Thursday night while performing a concert in South Carolina, the state in which nine people died this month after Dylann Roof allegedly opened fire on them inside an African-American church. McCartney followed up these words with a rendition of 1970 Beatles classic, “The Long And Winding Road. In the above video, meanwhile, McCartney also honored the victims at the Firefly Music Festival in Delaware. Thursday's performance took place at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, the state's capital, about 115 miles from the scene of the fatal attack. Check out McCartney's moving Delaware tribute above and also see how Beyonce paid homage to the victims of the Charleston shooting.
Over the past few weeks, Holly Madison has been promoting her new book, Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny. In doing so she’s shared some seriously unflattering stories about her former boss and boyfriend, Hugh Hefner. First, we learned that life at the Playboy Mansion made Holly ponder suicide . Shortly thereafter, Holly went into specifics, revealing that Hefner tried to buy her with a $3 million inheritance. She added that within minutes of their first meeting, he attempted to ply her with Quaaludes, which he called “thigh openers.” Like we said, she doesn’t exactly describe old Hef in the most glowing terms. So perhaps it’s not surprising that Hefner is now firing back and claiming that Madison is lying about everything from the way they met to his allegedly nefarious seduction methods. “Over the course of my life, I’ve had more than my fair share of romantic relationships with wonderful women,” said Hefner in a statement to Entertainment Tonight. “Many moved on to live happy, healthy and productive lives, and I’m pleased to say remain dear friends today. Sadly, there are a few who have chosen to rewrite history in an attempt to stay in the spotlight. I guess, as the old saying goes: You can’t win ’em all!”” Madison has already fired back, saying, “I don’t really care about his response. I wanted to share my story to inspire other women who might be in a bad relationship to get out, or not be branded by bad decisions they’ve made, and take charge of their lives and move on.” “I’m definitely not rewriting history. I’m finally telling the truth of my experience.” Though Hefner made no mention of taking legal action against Madison, we wouldn’t be surprised if this thing ends up in court. There’s a case that’s likely to have some very interesting testimony. View Slideshow: 19 Stars Who Have Posed in Playboy
In recent weeks, it began to seem as though the worst of the Josh Duggar molestation scandal was over. Josh’s parents and two of his victims broke their silence in interviews with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly, and in the surest sign yet that the Duggars are doing their best to put the ugliness of recent weeks behind them, Jill and Jessa Duggar were spotted in public for the first time since the world learned of their family’s dark secret. It now looks as though it may not be as easy for the Duggars to move on and reclaim their place as reality TV’s favorite family as their fans had hoped. Earlier today, we reported that Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar are still under investigation by local police in Tontitown, Arkansas. Now, Radar Online is reporting that Josh and Jim Bob allegedly lied under oath during the course of a 2013 civil suit. It seems that Josh and Jim Bob are the co-owners of a used car dealership, and together, they filed suit against an insurance company for a deal gone wrong. Court documents show that Jim Bob and Josh were both asked about any prior arrests or police investigations in which they were involved. Both men answered all such questions with, “The Plaintiffs state that no such records exist.” The case is already settled, and Josh and Jim Bob are unlikely to face any legal consequences for their false statements, but this latest allegation serves as yet another indication that there may be more skeletons in the Duggar’s closet than we initially thought. Earlier tonight, Jill and Jessa Duggar were interviewed by Megyn Kelly in a one-hour Fox News special. The sisters had previously confirmed that they were molested by Josh Duggar , but this was the first time they were given the opportunity to offer their full account of the abuse they endured in 2002 and 2003. Jill and Jessa Duggar Interview, Part I Surprisingly, the sisters seem to bear no ill will toward the older brother who sexually assaulted them on several occasions. In fact, in the Kelly interview, they stated more than once that they’ve forgiven Josh for his actions, and they even dismissed his abuse as nothing more than “inappropriate touching” from a young man who was “curious about girls.” At one point, the sisters reminded viewers that they were unaware they were being molested, even when it occurred while they were awake. “We didn’t even know about it,” Jill said when asked about Josh’s abuse. She added that her brother was “very sly” in his actions. As for the media’s release of the police report that named Josh as a child molester , both sisters said they were shocked and outraged and believe themselves to be the victims of a conspiracy against their family. Asked about the police report that was released to In Touch Weekly in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act, Jessa stated: “People that already don’t like our family would be the ones to spread this around, and maliciously do so, slanderously do so.” She went on to say that the media should “respect [the family’s] wish for things to remain private.” Jill built upon her sister’s accusations of slander by stating her belief that parents who have witnessed the Duggars PR nightmare might now stay silent. Victims might “take a pause before they do something to report … maybe these other victims will just not even have their situation dealt with.” The sisters then made the argument that the company that owns In Touch – Bauer Media Group – treated them like sex workers : View Slideshow: 21 Controversial Duggar Family Quotes “The tabloids who released this, they’re used to exploiting women,” Jill said. “Bauer,” Jessa added. “They’re a major porn provider. Maybe [that’s] their mindset. They’re just used to making objects out of women. Maybe we just didn’t seem any different.” The Bauer corporation is best known as the publisher of more than 400 magazine titles, most of which are mainstream periodicals, such as In Touch, Grazia and Empire. In both tonight’s interview and Jim Bob and Michelle’s earlier conversation with Kelly , the Duggars made the point that they feel more victimized by the media’s handling of their situation than by Josh’s abusive behavior. It’s a confusing argument, as the family goes from minimizing Josh’s actions as “mild touching” (that had been “dealt with” years before the Duggars rose to fame), to describing it as the darkest of family secrets that’s tragically been brought to light. Twitter is already abuzz with media figures bristling at the accusations, as generally when a case of child abuse is reported by a news outlet, the intent is not to shame the victims, but to help in some small way to ensure that justice is served and that the parties responsible are unable to claim further victims. By making sure the truth – however ugly it may be – is made public, responsible journalists can help to prevent abuse against children from being hidden and hushed-up, as happens far too often in our society. The Duggar girls stated that they are uncertain whether their family will pursue legal charges against the tabloids they feel are responsible for publicizing Josh’s past. Josh himself has yet to be interviewed account the scandal. View Slideshow: 23 Biggest Duggar Family Scandals
