The World Ends Today − What’s The Last Movie You Watch?

This  end-of-the-Mayan-Calendar crap  is starting to get on our nerves over here at Movieline virtual headquarters, but it did give us an idea for a fun question to put to you, our esteemed readers: If the world was really about to end, what’s the one movie you would choose to see before things went all Michael Bay ? Yeah, I know what you’re thinking: If the world was ending, I would not be watching no movie, unh-unh.  You’d be getting busy or frantically calling your shrink (who’d be frantically calling his shrink) or looting the nearest Best Buy so you could briefly experience the pleasures of the iPhone 5 without having to actually pay for one. But imagine that panic does not ensue and you have the time and desire to see one last movie before everything fades to black. What would it be? I see it as an emotional choice rather than a critical one:  What is the one film that will leave you in the proper frame of mind to say goodbye to it all? I’ll get the party started. I’d have to go with the 1957 noir classic  Sweet Smell of Success ,  starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis . To help give you an idea of why this movie means so much to me, let me tell you a very old joke:  An Englishman, a Frenchman and a New Yorker are captured by cannibals. The captives are told they’re going to be killed and eaten and their skins are going to be used to build a canoe. The cannibals are an empathetic and well-equipped group, however, and they allow each of their victims to choose how they’d like to die. The Englishman asks for a gun and shoots himself.  The Frenchman chooses a sword. When it’s the New Yorker’s turn, he asks for a fork. The cannibals think this is odd, but they give him one — at which point he begins stabbing himself all over his body. “So much for your fucking canoe,” the New Yorker says before he dies. That’s Sweet Smell of Success distilled into a sentence. It’s a dark, ugly (in terms of its subject matter) movie that never fails to exhilarate me because it oozes with old-school chutzpah. Curtis plays a sleazy publicist named Sidney Falco who will do just about anything to get into the gossip column of the corrupt and powerful J.J. Hunsecker (Lancaster) and the two characters’ toxic relationship unfolds like a thrilling prize fight in which the punches consist of lethal lines of dialog written by Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman. I could go on about director Alexander Mackendrick’s stark black-and-white depiction of late 1950s New York and Elmer Bernstein’s score which are as ballsy as the screenplay and the performances, but this post is supposed to be about you, not me. My point is, if the end is near, I’m going to watch a movie that puts a little swagger in my step before I get devoured by a fiery serpent or whatever is supposed to happen when the Mayan calendar ends. So now it’s your turn. What movie would you pick?  Leave your choice in the comments section, preferably with the reason(s) for your choice. Westboro Baptist Church, Shirley Phelps-Roper: Besieged By Anonymous Trolls!

Westboro Baptist Church and specifically spokeswoman Shirley Phelps-Roper have been besieged by trolls from the notorious hacktivist group Anonymous. As soon as WBC announced plans to picket a vigil for the victims of Friday’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Anonymous retaliated hardcore. Shirley Phelps-Roper so far is bearing the brunt of the group’s efforts. In a video posted to Vimeo by Anonymous, the group vowed: “We will not allow you to corrupt the minds of America with your seeds of hatred. We will not allow you to inspire aggression to the social factions which you deem inferior.” “We will render you obsolete. We will destroy you. We are coming.” Phelps-Roper, a relative of WBC founder Fred Phelps, announced the group’s plan “to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment.” Monday, Phelps-Roper’s handle @DearShirley was taken over by hacker @cosmothegod, who Tweeted a petition calling for the White House to recognize WBC as a hate group. Anonymous also claims to have successfully filed for a death certificate for Phelps-Roper, blocked her social security number and changed her desktop background to gay porn. Via its its @YourAnonNews account, Anonomyous also claimed responsibility for the fact that Westboro Baptist Church’s website was taken down. After people from Anonymous hacked Westboro Baptist Church this weekend, they claimed to have found a trove of information about its members. So far, there has also been no news of Westboro carrying through on its threat to picket the funerals of Newtown shooting victims … but watch out if they do.

‘Pain & Gain’ Trailer: Michael Bay Pumps Iron, Hero Shots Into Bizarre True Crime Tale

If you loathe Transformers – Michael Bay but have a soft spot for the Bay who made not one, but two Bad Boys es, then the first trailer for his true crime pic Pain & Gain is going to push all the right buttons: Beefy macho men, fast cars, a slick Miami setting, Mark Wahlberg hitting that Dirk Diggler sweet spot of dumb overconfidence, and everyone’s favorite muscleman, The Rock… it’s enough to make the truly disturbing real life saga of a gang of bodybuilding thugs-turned-killers who bungled their way through unspeakable acts of torture and murder into a feelgood American Dream antihero tale! Wahlberg stars as real life ringleader Daniel Lugo, a small time Florida dreamer/ short shorts enthusiast who tapped his workout buddies to pull the most inept — and, don’t get it twisted, unforgivably violent — extortion attempt in recent history. Things didn’t turn out so well for the Sun Gym gang, and things certainly didn’t shake out in slo-motion hero shots and hilarious sound bite quips for their victims. The trailer is CSI Miami -slick and stuffed with all the usual Bay signatures that made him the commercially successful bombast-specialist auteur that he is, but I can’t help but wonder if, after making relatable Lugo & Co.’s yearning for more, and glorifying the bromantic shenanigans that unfold as they cook up a scheme to steal money from Monk, Bay will flip the table on his audience and shine a harsher light on the crimes that put these “heroes” on death row in real life. Since this is Michael Freaking Bay we’re talking about here, I have no idea what to expect on the moral ambiguity tip, but best case scenario, this could be his most mature and complex look at modern machismo yet. (Maybe that’s not saying much.) Pain & Gain is based on Miami New Times writer Pete Collins’ fascinating report on the Sun Gym gang and the Fargo -esque trajectory of their eventual downfall and arrest. The full saga is a must-read: Find it archived here . Pain & Gain hits theaters April 26. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Westboro Baptist Church Plan To Protest Funerals Of Newtown Elementary Children And Claims “God Sent The Shooter”

GET THESE IDIOTS OUTTA HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Westboro Baptist Church To Protest Newtown Funerals The scum of the Earth, Westboro Baptist Church , controversial group known for protesting outside funerals of slain U.S. service members, announced that it will picket a vigil for the victims of Friday’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting … Via HuffingtonPost reports: Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokesperson for the group and, like most members of the organization, a relative of the group’s founder, Fred Phelps, announced on Twitter on Saturday the group’s plan “to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment.” It is unclear when the group plans to protest, although a tweet from Margie Phelps implied that it would be during a vigil that will be attended by President Barack Obama on Sunday evening. Members of the Westboro Baptist Church say that America is being punished for its acceptance of gays and lesbians. In recent days, Phelps family members have sent tweets about the Connecticut shooting that have said “God sent the shooter.” Not surprisingly, the group’s announcement was met with resistance online. A Change.org petition asking for Connecticut officials to prevent the group from protesting has been launched, and users of the social news and link sharing site Reddit have been discussing ways to stage a counter-protest. Meanwhile, efforts by the computer hacking group known as ‘Anonymous’ are allegedly attempting to take the Westboro Baptist Church website down through what is described as #OpWestBoro on Twitter. However, as of 8:30 EST, the church’s website is still working. A YouTube video, purportedly from Anonymous, warns Westboro of being targeted by the hacktivists. THIS IS JUST DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!! These people are not Christians nor is this the work of God, Allah, Buddah or anything resembling morality or goodness. The word Christian means to be Christ-like and Jesus Christ was a loving person. So it’s basically an oxymoron, for example saying “That good person shot 27 angels in the school.” and “The WBC are Christians.” To sign the petition to legally recognize The Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group click HERE

New ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Teaser: The Wrath Of Cumberbatch?

It’s impressive how much J.J. Abrams and the folks at Bad Robot manage to pack into the new teaser trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness without revealing, well, the actual plot of the summer 2013 sequel. Space action! Benedict Cumberbatch ! That darned hands-on-glass scene that just screams ” I have been and always shall be your friend !” Watch the action-packed teaser below and let’s get to piecing together the puzzle. The teaser is big on setting up an ambiguous adversarial relationship between Kirk (Chris Pine) and Cumberbatch, but Captain Pike’s voice over seems more telling of the themes Star Trek Into Darkness will hit: Kirk’s bravado, and the danger it poses to his crew. Despite the out of context flashes of intriguing set pieces — Star Wars ian spaceship action, that leap off a cliff, that other leap off a building, and what appears to be the Enterprise crash-landing in water — the hands moment ends the tease with a clear nod to Wrath of Khan , although we can’t tell who’s on what side of the glass. Still, something tells me there are more clues hidden in this teaser than we might think, like this brief shot of Noel Clarke’s as-yet unidentified character. As seen in the first nine minutes of the film , Clarke plays a man whose ailing daughter Cumberbatch approaches at a London hospital and offers to save. Here we see him in a possibly-Starfleet uniform as he appears to drop a thumble full of something into a glass of water — perhaps fulfilling his end of his deal with the Cumber-Devil? What intriguing bits and clues do you see in the teaser? Chime in below. Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters May 17, 2013. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Quentin Tarantino Defends Violence in ‘Django Unchained’

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino defended the heavy dosage of violence in Django Unchained , his latest film starring Jamie Foxx , Christoph Waltz , Leonardo DiCaprio , Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson . As with many of his past offerings, Tarantino’s Oscar hopeful includes a graphic depictions of blood and gunshot victims. Tarantino was asked about the violence over the weekend in New York in the wake of the tragedy in a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 dead, most of them children. At a Saturday press event, Tarantino said that real-life violence is the fault of perpetrators and didn’t appear to accept a correlation between incidents like the weekend’s massacre in Newtown, CT and violence on the big screen. “I think you know there’s violence in the world, tragedies happen, blame the playmakers,” he said according to BBC, adding, “It’s a Western. Give me a break.” Django Unchained received five Golden Globe nominations last week and is a strong contender for Oscar nominations next month. Still, Django star Jamie Foxx did say he believes the big screen can influence people’s actions. “We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn’t have a sort of influence. It does,” he said. In the spaghetti-western style feature, Foxx pays a freed slave who sets out to rescue his wife from a ruthless plantation owner, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Representing more divide among the Django crew that is perhaps a microcosm of society generally, Christoph Waltz said he didn’t believe films provoke violence, adding that the film contained violence because it was in fact part of American history. “The media’s responsibility is greater than the story teller is because… Django is violent, but it’s not inspiring violence,” said Waltz. Kerry Washington offered up that violence in film can serve as an important learning vehicle, educating audiences about historical atrocities such as slavery. “I do think that it’s important when we have the opportunity to talk about violence and not just kind of have it as entertainment, but connect it to the wrongs, the injustices, the social ills,” said Washington. Meanwhile, Paramount decided to move premiere events in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh for Tom Cruise’s new action pic Jack Reacher “out of honor and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken.” The feature opens with sniper shooting several people. And Sunday night, new episodes of Family Guy and American Dad were dropped, with Fox network opting for repeats of the shows in order to avoid showing any potentially sensitive content. A scheduled repeat of The Cleveland Show was also swapped out. Twenty six children and six adults died at Sandy Hook school in Newton, CT. The gunman is identified as Adam Lanza, 20. He killed his mother before heading to the school Friday. [ Source: BBC ]

Miley Cyrus vs. Taylor Swift: Shots Fired?

Did Miley Cyrus just call Taylor Swift a slut? Earlier this week, a Twitter user with the handle “kenbakernow” posted the following message, matching up Miley with Taylor and asking fans to consider the reputation of each superstar: It is true that some of the Miley Cyrus fashion choices have led to a certain label, and it hasn’t really helped that she recently took to the stage with strippers . Swift, meanwhile, receives a few jabs for her very long dating resume, but is mostly considered America’s Singing Sweetheart. How does Miley feel about the comparison? “@kenbakernow haha,” she responded. “this made laugh. thanks for making me smile I needed it love u.” Of course Cyrus would appreciate a follower standing up for her, but didn’t she sort of throw Swift under the promiscuous bus in the process? What do you think THGers? Does Miley receive unfair criticism, while Swift should be taken more to task for her never-ending line of boyfriends?

Morgan Freeman Blames "Sensationalist Media" for Connecticut Shooting, Coverage of National Tragedies

Adam Lanza . The name of the assailant who gunned down 20 children and six adults inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut last week has been all over the news. And that’s a serious problem, according to Morgan Freeman. With the possibility of new gun control laws up for debate, the Oscar winner has released a statement in which he points the blame for these types of tragedies directly at CNN, Fox News and other media outlets. Why did the Connecticut shooting take place? “It’s because of the way the media reports it,” Freeman says. “Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. “Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. “Why a grade school? Why children? Because he’ll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.” Backing up this theory, it’s believed that Lanza previewed his massacre online two days before it took place, teasing the murder/suicide on a forum like some sort of twisted movie. Continues Morgan: “CNN’s article says that if the body count “holds up”, this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer’s face on all their reports for hours. “Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer’s identity? None that I’ve seen yet. Because they don’t sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you’ve just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next. “You can help by forgetting you ever read this man’s name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news.” What do you think of this take? Is the media to blame for the shooting?   Yes, they glorify the killer! Yes, they play at least some role No, some people are beyond reason No, it’s all about gun control View Poll »
