Undrafted Giants rookie on Cruz control after 3 TD catches

Undrafted Giants rookie on Cruz control after 3 TD catches August is routinely littered with undrafted NFL free agents who look like All-Pros in training camp and then disappear in games. Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz avoided that brush in high style last night. The rookie from UMass picked up right where he left off on the Albany practice field, electrifying the crowd at New Meadowlands Stadium's football debut with three second-half touchdown grabs in a 31-16 preseason win over the Jets. ****** Cruz, a Paterson, N.J. native ******* who is battling for the Giants' final receiver spot, did nothing to hurt that bid by hooking up with backup quarterback Jim Sorgi twice and Rhett Bomar once to cement the win after Big Blue fell behind 16-10. “It's definitely a surreal feeling to be on this podium talking to you guys,” said Cruz, whose performance even resulted in a Twitter shout-out from LeBron James. “Growing up watching the Giants, seeing that blue all my life — I feel like I'm dreaming right now.” Of course, Cruz's big night — he finished with a team-high six catches for 145 yards — was nothing new to anyone who has watched the 6-foot-1, 200-pound target excel on the practice fields. Sensing an opportunity to make the roster after Domenik Hixon's season-ending knee injury and a host of bumps and bruises that have battered the Giants' receiving corps, Cruz was routinely lighting up workouts. Coach Tom Coughlin praised him loudly to reporters, and that proclamation looked even more prescient last night after Cruz had his way with the Jets' backups in the second half, suddenly bringing an otherwise sleepy preseason affair to life. Cruz struck first with 2:40 left in the third, when he used one hand to corral a long Sorgi throw over Jets backup corner Dwight Lowery down the left sideline. After Lowery slipped, Cruz scooted the rest of the way for the score. To be fair, Cruz appeared to help his case generously by giving a shove to Lowery's facemask during the play, but no flag was thrown and the rookie's “Monday Night Football” moment was sealed. Except for one thing: Cruz wasn't done. Far from it, in fact. Sorgi suddenly had a new favorite target in the fourth quarter, and Cruz made the most of garbage time with three more catches for 60 yards, including a 34-yard scoring grab down the left sideline over veteran backup linebacker Lance Laury to make it 24-16 with 13 minutes left. Cruz then hauled in a five-yard jump ball in the right corner of the end zone from Bomar with 2:24 left. Even after Hixon's injury, Cruz appeared to be a longshot to make the Giants' roster. But last night's boffo performance combined with the continuing disappointment that is Sinorice Moss could cause Coughlin to create room for Cruz. Flo Rida ‘Looks Forward’ To David Guetta Bringing Home A VMA

Guetta is up against Lady Gaga, Usher and others for Best Dance Music Video at the 2010 Video Music Awards. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: Raymond Boyd/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images As if working with the Black Eyed Peas, Akon and Rihanna weren’t enough of a signal of international dance music’s crossover star David Guetta ‘s two-year ascension to the top of the American urban pop-music scene, the French house-music producer is up for a Moonman at this year’s Video Music Awards . Nominated for Best Dance Music Video for his hit single “Sexy Chick,” featuring Akon, Guetta is up against some stiff competition for his big night in L.A. on September 12. His fellow nominees include Usher for “OMG,” German dance group Cascada (remember “Everytime We Touch”?) for “Evacuate the Dancefloor” and Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It,” featuring Snooki, the Situation and company. And let’s not forget the biggest of elephants in the room, Lady Gaga for “Bad Romance.” Still, DGuetta’s boy, rapper Flo Rida, with whom he currently has a top 10 hit in Europe with “Club Can’t Handle Me,” thinks his chances of winning are rather good. “My reaction to David Guetta being nominated for ‘Best Dance Video’? Well, he’s definitely a household name,” Flo told MTV UK today in London. “Not just nationally, but he’s internationally known. He’s a passionate dude about his music and he gets the party crunk. I look forward to him taking that home.” “The genius of him is the fact that he is a perfectionist. He strives to make sure that a record has the right gumbo,” Flo said using the analogy of the Southern dish of random ingredients that somehow just tastes right. “It moves you — having you bob your head. If you are a dancer, it will make you try some new moves. David Guetta has that work ethic and that drive to make sure he has the #1 party record, like we do right now with ‘Club Can’t Handle Me.’ ” And while fans will have to wait till the big night to find out if Guetta proves the victor, Flo Rida has a special message for all you David Guetta fans out there. “To David Guetta and his fans, y’all make sure and support him,” Flo said. “David, you know you work hard. You grind. Win or lose, I feel like you are still the winner because you have fans that are very loyal to you. So do your thing. Keep your head up.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from Tuesday (August 3) through September 12. ‘Twilight’ Vs. ‘The Last Airbender’: Jackson Rathbone’s Characters Face Off!

‘I’m just lucky they live in two different dimensions,’ the actor tells MTV News. By Rick Marshall Jackson Rathbone Photo: MTV News Jackson Rathbone is a busy guy these days. With featured roles in not one but two of this week’s biggest releases, the “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “The Last Airbender” actor is doing the press rounds and fielding questions from just about every media outlet in the world. Don’t worry, though, MTV News still managed to ask him the most important question of them all: Who would win in a fight between his boomerang-wielding “Airbender” character Sokka and his “Twilight” vampire Jasper? Given the magnitude of the question, it’s no surprise he had to stall for time and defer to “Airbender” co-star Nicola Peltz when MTV News posed the question. “Sokka, no question,” Peltz said. Pressed for an explanation as to why her “Airbender” character’s brother, who can’t “bend” water and doesn’t have any special abilities other than a good throwing arm, could hold his own against the “Twilight” bloodsucker, Peltz reiterated that Sokka would be the victor if the two ever faced off. “Definitely Sokka,” she said. “He has a boomerang!” Rathbone, on the other hand, took a more neutral — though decidedly less fun — stance on the debate. “I’m just lucky they live in two different dimensions, two different worlds,” he said, going the safe route. “It’s an honor to be a part of these two big franchises that seem to have captivated the world in one form or another, and I’m just privileged to be able to do what I love to do.” With “Eclipse” arriving in theaters Wednesday (June 30) and “The Last Airbender” premiering Thursday, it looks like audiences will be able to decide for themselves soon enough. Which of Jackson’s characters do you think would come out on top? Sound off in the comments! Trash Me Lamps Take on Grave-to-Grave Design

Images via Victor Vetterlein We’ve all heard of cradle-to-cradle design, which is design that mimics natural life cycles during which something is made of materials, runs its useful life cycle, and at the end of that useful life cycle, becomes material for something new. Trash Me lamps by Victor Vetterlein bring a new spin to that design concept, starting at the grave. Pulling trash out of the rubbish bin, Vetterlein creates a bright idea. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Bret Michaels ‘Didn’t Tell’ Doctors He Was Performing On ‘American Idol’ Finale

Singer performed ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’ with Casey James. By Kelley L. Carter Bret Michaels Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images LOS ANGELES — According to Bret Michaels , his surprise performance Wednesday night on the “American Idol” season finale stage was much-needed musical therapy. Anticipation built quickly in the audience when the familiar guitar chords of one of Michaels’ biggest hits with his group Poison, “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” began and he later emerged on stage with top-three finalist Casey James. “I needed to be here and do this because it’s been two months since I played,” the rocker said backstage at the Nokia Theater shortly after his performance. “It’s been a month and a half in the hospital. It was such an amazing feeling to come out here and jam with Casey. I didn’t tell [my doctors] I was going to do this. I just told them I was doing the ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ finale. They’re going to find out in a minute. But I feel great, I gotta be honest. There’s a still a lot of pain I’m still experiencing. [But] except for a little hitch … my left side from the … stroke, I feel amazing.” Last month the singer and reality show star was hospitalized for a brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital again last week because of a “warning stroke.” On Sunday he appeared on the “Celebrity Apprentice” finale and was named the victor, and he says that he’s ready to hit the road again. “I can’t believe my family let me out. I may not have told them either; I left a few things out,” he joked. “But I needed this for my soul. Honestly. It was a great experience.” He said that he plans to perform again as soon as Friday in Biloxi, Mississippi. “[I’m going to] do a few shows at a time. If it works out, great. If it doesn’t, I’ll start again,” he said. Michaels also reflected on lessons he learned while hospitalized. “I’ve always tried to treat people with respect and I’ve always tried to treat people great. I enjoy every day — every minute I’m here is awesome.” Michaels joked that he wasn’t exactly sure what he would be doing, now that he’s won the title of “Celebrity Apprentice.” He also said that he initially didn’t know if he was hired or fired by Donald Trump. “I leaned in and said, ‘Did you say hired or fired?’ I didn’t know what he said. I just jumped up. I thought, ‘Trump, you’re not going to fire me, right now. I’m on medication. I flew a long way. Holly is amazing. She’s a fierce competitor,’ ” he said of his co-finalist, Holly Robinson Peete. “I didn’t ask Trump ‘What does being “Celebrity Apprentice” entail? Do you get paid? Is there cash involved?’ But what do you gotta do for him? Hopefully, you get to do a lot of charity fundraising. If that’s what it is, I’m going to love it.” And as for that hospital stay? “I’ve spent the last month and a half in the hospital. I don’t ever want to see a hospital again,” he said. “I just want to go out and have a great time.” What did you think of Bret Michaels’ performance on “Idol”? Sound off in the comments below!
