Jake Gyllenhaal Didn’t Take Himself ‘Too Seriously’ On ‘Prince Of Persia’

‘I always like to try and find something that’s more interesting than what’s just on the page,’ he tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf Jake Gyllenhaal Photo: MTV News Back in February, “Prince of Persia” director Mike Newell told MTV News that Jake Gyllenhaal, his upcoming film’s star, was the definition of a “thinking woman’s action hero.” “He’s got a sort of cheeky, devil-may-care light in his eye, and at the same time, he has a sensitivity, delicacy and thinness of skin,” the Brit director explained. “He is glorious-looking, but you wanted more than that. You wanted women to be interested in him not just as a piece of eye candy.” Now it’s all well and good to have your boss paying you such compliments, but Newell’s label lined up perfectly with how Gyllenhaal approached the role — his first turn as an action hero after years spent making a name in serious fare like “Brokeback Mountain” and “Jarhead.” “I always like to try and find something that’s more interesting than what’s just on the page whenever I’m doing something,” the Oscar-nominated actor told MTV News. Gyllenhaal plays Dastan, a poor young man in the ancient Mideast who’s essentially adopted into the royal family and suddenly finds himself in the midst of a swashbuckling adventure to protect a magical dagger capable of turning back time. “Brokeback,” this ain’t. But he approached the Disney material with respect and seriousness — for the most part. “Before I even read the script, [Newell] said to me, ‘You know, my boy, it’s a script about a dagger that turns back time. Now let’s talk about what that is.’ I was like, ‘A dagger that turns back time?’ And he was like, ‘Well, yes, I know what you are thinking, because I know you are the thinking woman’s action hero, but, my boy!’ And then he [said] in ancient Persia, or during the time this fantasy world is set, they would believe in things like that. … Somehow, that was an in for me. It wasn’t just a device, it was actually an idea that was fascinating. The whole movie became that with Mike. We were going just a little bit deeper than you would expect.” Going deeper, though, didn’t mean becoming overly serious about a summer popcorn flick that is adapted from a long-running video game series. “There’s also a great sense of not taking yourself too seriously, which is so important,” Gyllenhaal explained. “And occasionally, when you have an opportunity, take yourself a little seriously, which we do in this movie, and I do think that separates Dastan from other action heroes.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . How "Green" Is Gaming?

April 22 is Earth Day, 24 hours devoted to considering the impact we have on the natural world and (hopefully) improving our relationship with the planet. It might seem like gaming is low-impact in terms of the environment — after all, you’re just sitting there staring at a screen as opposed to burning tires or releasing mercury into the water supply — but the video game industry does have an effect on the planet. Gamepro recently looked into it and compiled and interesting and/or enlightening article on the impact video games have on Nature. Among the big three consoles, Nintendo’s Wii uses the least power, but, overall, Nintendo has the lowest rating in eco-friendliness among game system manufacturers, according to a Greenpeace report published in January. This isn’t to say Microsoft and Sony are eco-warriors. In the list of consumer electronic manufacturers, Microsoft was second-to-worst and Sony was in the middle of the pack. While the video game industry

Mid-Day Discussion: Quickie iPad Impressions

It’s the Monday after a holiday, so my work day has been pretty hectic so far. Whenever I have a chance, I’ve been booting up my iPad and playing with Apple’s latest touch-fueled device. I’ll return with much deeper hands-on impressions of the iPad soon, but here are quick thoughts: The landscape keyboard actually makes writing e-mails feasible, not a pain Moving in and out of applications is so fast it almost lack of multi-tasking irrelevant An iPad is, by far, the coolest way to spend a lazy Sunday on the couch Games are fairly expensive, especially ones based on existing franchises, and rushed The “oooh” moment from non-techies comes from flipping a book’s page with your finger I shouldn’t have woken up at 4am, as the iPad didn’t sell out and I could have slept in Dear Time , no one is going to pay for and download a brand-new Time app every week If you have any other questions, I’ll be watching the comments! Inglorious Basterds Director Quentin Tarantino Not Interested In Video Games

When Hollywood and video games cross paths, it’s not always a good thing. Occasionally, we get things like Boom Blox from Steven Spielberg. One filmmaker we won’t see entering video game development, however, is Inglorious Basterds writer and director Quentin Tarantino. “I cannot get myself interested in video games,” explained Tarantino to The Telegraph . “I’ve been given video game players and they just sit there connected to my TVs gathering dust until eventually I unplug them so I can put in another special-region DVD player.” I’m having a terrible flashback to a cross-dimensional world where Koei made a Dynasty Warriors -style Kill Bill … Source: The Telegraph Have something to share? New Halo: Reach Multiplayer Details: Load Outs, Armor Lock, And More

Bungie revealed an impressive amount of details regarding their under-the-radar shooter Halo: Reach during their latest weekly update . In addition to detailed breakdowns of some of the various pros and cons of the weaponry, armor abilities, and vehicles players can expect to have at their disposal in the game’s multiplayer. Two of the standout bits of info concern the newly revealed Armor Ability, Armor Lock, and the game’s weapon load out system. The Armor Ability sounds rather rad as it not only makes you momentarily invincible, but it also allows you to “shed plasma grenades, shred vehicles unfortunate enough to attempt a splatter, and deflect projectiles.” The downside is that you can’t move while using it. Can you say sitting duck? As for the load out system, players will be able to choose between a predetermined mix of weapons, Armor Abilities and grenades specifically designed for the playlist and/or game type. So while you can’t mix and match the individual load out components, there will be plenty of options to meet your killing needs. Plus, you can always pick up new weapons during matches, so you’ll still be able to create the perfect weapon combo for your play style. There are plenty of more details where that came from including clarification on Reach ’s stealth kill mechanic, a Designated Marksman Rifle vs. Magnum discussion, an analysis of shield attributes, jet-pack love, and lots more. If you’re looking forward to Halo: Reach in the least, you’ll definitely want to pick up what Bungie’s throwing down.
