Dark Side of the Moon Patrol – The MOON8 Review

Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon is one of the most important albums in popular music. With over 45 million copies sold, an unbeatable record 741 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and the standard by which audiophiles show off their sound systems, it is one of a rare group of albums that truly are required listening. So what happens when you take one of the most legendary recordings of all time and recreate it in the chiptunes style? Come inside and take a listen. You may just be surprised. Now I am a huge chiptunes fan, but when it comes to these kinds of recordings, they really have to be done right to be listenable beyond mere curiosity. Not only does MOON8 sound good, it transcends sounding like music done for a video game. Sure, the tones are undeniably old-school NES, but nothing has been done to tweak the music to sound like it actually came from a game. This is a chiptunes recreation in its purest sense. What I find truly stunning about MOON8 is just how much effort has gone into the recreation of nearly all of Pink Floyd’s instrumentation. This is obviously not something that was cranked out in a weekend to say “hey, look what I can do.” The music is a labor of love, for both the source material and style in which it has been recreated. I was skeptical before hearing them, and then completely blown away by, how well the explosion of clock chimes at the beginning of “Time” and the cash register opening of “Money ” were done. Both pieces precisely capture the spirit of the originals in the chiptune style. Frankly, it’s pretty mind blowing how good the whole album sounds. The pulsing analog synths of “On the Run” sound frighteningly close to the original and the bleep-creations of Clare Torry’s vocalizations in “The Great Gig in the Sky” are spot on. It makes me wish LA’s Laserium hadn’t recently shut down (again) because replacing their regular DSOTM laser-show with this music for one night would be beyond cool to see.

No Female Agents In Crackdown 2

I play every video game as a female character if given the option. I don’t know why. I just do. Sadly, I won’t have that option when Crackdown 2 comes out. The game will not offer girl-cops. “In Crackdown , the amount of memory that it was going to take for it to do all the actual animation, the texture sets and the models for the females – we would’ve needed to massively reduce other sections of the game,” creative director Billy Thomson told 1UP at PAX East last week. “So rather than do two separate models, we cut it back and gave the player as much customization as we could on the male character and that allowed us to use that extra memory to do other things in the game.” “It’s actually the same reason again,” Thomsen said. “When it came to Crackdown 2, you’ve got four players (in cooperative play), and that means every single player can be a different character and that has to be in memory all the time. We had to save memory all over the place because we’ve got so much more content in this game than we had in the first game. We don’t stream.” “It’d be great (to have female characters), but what we were going to lose didn’t seem like it’d be worth it. If we had more memory, it’d be okay.” Also: No Yeti agents. Probably because they don’t have the real-life models. Once we catch Bigfoot, I’m sure there will be Yetis options in all games. Source: 1UP

Preview: Hydro Thunder Hurricane

In his old life as a video game professional, Andrew Pfister got a chance to play Hydro Thunder Hurricane , a soggy racing game soon to be available on Xbox Live, at PAX East 2010. Here’s what he said: “Considering that Vector Unit creative director Matt Small and technical director Ralf Knoesel are big fans of water-based racing games (Small correctly identified the superior Wave Race title as the original Wave Race 64), they seem to be on the right track. In my quick lap, there was a good balance of ‘arcadey’ qualities like branching paths, jumps, and power-ups, and having to pay attention to competitor-generated wake and wave patterns to keep your racing line true and speed at maximum.” Check out the rest of the preview, right here.

RapeLay

RapeLay is a new Japanese video game that simulates raping a girl, impregnating her, and urging her to have an abortion. And of course, women's groups are trying to get the game pulled. I stand by my theory that the world would be a better place if the only video game that existed was Animal Crossing. A 3-year-old Wilson County girl accidentally shot and killed herself Sunday night, said local police. The incident happened at about 6:15 p.m. in her home located off of Cainsville Road. According to investigators, the girl's father had left a semi-automatic weapon on the counter, and the child mistook it for a “Wii” video game controller. The child was fatally shot in the abdomen. The girl was rushed to University Medical Center in Lebanon where she was pronounced dead.
