Has A User Found A Way To Add "Other OS" Back To The PlayStation 3?

Last week , Sony’s newest PlayStation 3 firmware update removed the system’s ability to install other operating systems on your PS3. Time constraints and a lack of interest have prevented me from ever installing a new operating system in my PlayStation 3, and I imagine I’m in the huge majority here, but

Journalists Vs. Developers — The PAX East Panel

I had the honor to help kick off PAX East in Boston as part of a panel Wired games editor Chris Kohler put together entitled Journalists Vs. Developers: The Ultimate Grudge Match. Irrational Games director of product development Tim Gerritsen and Harmonix publicist John Drake took the opposing side, with EA.com editor-in-chief and former writer Jeff Green moderating and providing plenty of laughs. Gaming’s journalists and developers actually tend to mostly got along, but if you’re looking for insight into the complicated relationship between these two industry players, it’s well worth watching. Alan Wake Is (Finally) Done, Gets New Developer Diary

The day that gamers everywhere thought would never come has arrived: Alan Wake is done! Remedy announced via Twitter today that their long anticipated thriller-shooter has “passed certification and has officially been completed!” In addition, Remedy has bumped up the European release date to May 14, a week earlier than previously announced. Wake is still scheduled for release in North America on May 18 and Japan on May 27. Clearly, this game has been a long time coming, so it’s no wonder that Remedy popped some bubbly to celebrate Wake ’s completion (I know this becasue they posted some party pictures on their forums to prove it). Remedy also released a new developer diary entitled “Building the Thriller,” which features some brand new gameplay footage and more details about the game’s story and design. Asteroids Record Beaten

It’s a bad week for old-timey game record holders — the long-standing world record in the game Asteroids was destroyed on Monday night. Back in 1982, Scott Safran scored 41,336,440 points in Asteroids , and his record stood until Monday night when Seattle locksmith John McAllister scored 41,338,740 points on the arcade version of the game. It was a squeaker, but enough to the record to change hands. Unlike a three hour Donkey Kong kill-screen game, Asteroids records are all about endurance; it took McAllister 58 bleary-eyed hours to beat the high score, and he did it all without the aid of feathered hair or acid wash jeans. According to McAllister, “The toughest part was this morning at three o’clock, six o’clock and nine o’ clock. Three o’clock I got through pretty well; at 6 o’clock, it was a struggled, and at 9 o’clock I felt like my eyes closed a few times.” The machine McAllister was using was a vintage 1979 Asteroids machine, and it’s amazing enough that it still works. Oh, and because it’s important, McAllister signed his towering high score with the intials

Kojima: Consoles Will Be Dead Soon

Video game visionary Hideo Kojima is predicting the death of the console. At a recent Japanese press conference, the Metal Gear creator said, “In the near future, we’ll have games that don’t depend on any platform… Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel — wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience.” At the same press conference, Kojima revealed that PSP game Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will include Monster Hunter content. Review: WarioWare D.I.Y.

My favorite quirk about the WarioWare series is that it takes the average gamer longer to explain one of the series’ crazy microgames than it does to play it. The series, which has always tapped into our collective instincts built upon a lifetime of gaming, brings it all full circle with the latest DS installment, WarioWare D.I.Y. Andrew Pfister played quite a few of the game’s premade levels and sampled many of the user-created microgames for his review. Here’s a choice quote: “Just in the first week after the game’s release, it’s already evident that there are some highly creative people hard at work making games based on their favorite NES games, inside meme-related jokes, or like me, an entire suite of games based on the frustrations of air travel. Let’s hope Nintendo keeps supporting this initiative, highlighting the best of the best, and nurturing America’s aspiring amateur game developers.” I like WarioWare as is, so the information pretty much drives home my desire to pick it up.
