How "Green" Is Gaming?

April 22 is Earth Day, 24 hours devoted to considering the impact we have on the natural world and (hopefully) improving our relationship with the planet. It might seem like gaming is low-impact in terms of the environment — after all, you’re just sitting there staring at a screen as opposed to burning tires or releasing mercury into the water supply — but the video game industry does have an effect on the planet. Gamepro recently looked into it and compiled and interesting and/or enlightening article on the impact video games have on Nature. Among the big three consoles, Nintendo’s Wii uses the least power, but, overall, Nintendo has the lowest rating in eco-friendliness among game system manufacturers, according to a Greenpeace report published in January. This isn’t to say Microsoft and Sony are eco-warriors. In the list of consumer electronic manufacturers, Microsoft was second-to-worst and Sony was in the middle of the pack. While the video game industry

Tech Review: Apple iPad

Watch Larger Version | Watch HD Version Some say it’s revolutionary, others say it’s pure magic. Could it be both? Chris Hardwick and Kevin Pereira give their official take on the Apple iPad, with its 9.7″ multi touch display, web browsing, iWorks productivity software and more, all starting at $500. Find the full review from Gadget Pron on Attack of the Show after the cut. What You Need To Know Compared to other devices, the iPad is extremely unique and unlike anything else we’ve used. It’s about the size of a piece of paper (8″ x 10″) and measures half an inch thick. It’s heavier than you might expect. This might make it too heavy or awkward when you’re using the tablet for long periods of time. It’s a good size but you can’t hold it up forever. You have to put it on a desk and hover over it, or balance it on your knees. The touch screen is the most striking feature of the iPad. It’s huge at 9.7″ and LED backlit, so it’s everything you’d expect from a touch screen Apple device. If you’ve used an iPhone before, you’ll know how to use this. Even if you have no experience with an iPhone, it’s immediately intuitive. The screen is multi-touch, which means you can pinch and zoom. The keyboard works well but you’ll have to hover over the iPad to type on it. It has the OLEOPhobic screen but you’ll still get your fingerprints all over it. Overall, we love the iPhone touch experience and this is even better because the screen is huge! For the most part, the iPad experience translated well to the primary features, like web browsing, checking email and watching Youtube videos. The iPad makes browsing the web on Safari exactly the way you want to. Pinch and zoom, large screen and easy keyboard makes this the killer app (though without the Flash support). Lots of other apps like email and YouTube have been redesigned to work and look better on the iPad, and it makes a huge difference because of all the screen real estate. The iWorks apps like Pages and iBooks work extremely well. The battery life so far is great. Other apps available include the NetFlix app, which gives you access to your instant queue and looks amazing on the screen. There’s also Real Racing GTI which is easier to play than on an iPhone, because you don’t over correct on the iPad as much and it doesnt look bad when you scale it. Evernote has been redesigned for the iPad and is more fun to use. Command and Conquer Red Alert is amazing, and is just as easy to play as on a computer. The only problem is that the apps are expensive. Price $500.00 for the 16g Wi-Fi version. Rating 4 Seals of Approval out of 5. ( How do we rate gadgets? ) This won’t replace your laptop and you may need to buy other accessories, like a keyboard. Want something reviewed on Gadget Pr0n? Hydrophobia First Look Preview

Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink. Of course, if you stop to take a sip during the action of Hydrophobia , you probably are missing the point. In this Xbox Live Arcade game, water becomes your ally as you use it to extinguish fires, spread oil to light enemies on fire, and eventually as a weapon itself. While there’s plenty of underwater combat with the terrorists onboard the sinking ship, you’ll also have to survive the disaster which consists of three acts each containing three chapters.

NCSoft Trademarks City of Heroes 2

Over the weekend, NCSoft filed a trademark application for the name City of Heroes 2 . No other details are available on the plan were released/revealed, although I’ve put in a call to NCSoft and will let you know if they’re ready to tell us anything yet. The original City of Heroes came out five years ago; the super-heroic MMO has been successful enough to keep going, and a number of add-ons and expansions have been released. While the world of the super-hero has been explored in a number of MMOs — Champions Online , City of Heroes, City of Villains, DC Universe Online (to come) — I don’t think anyone has really nailed it yet. Here’s why: MMOs and super-heroes are incompatible. The thing that makes a person a hero or a super-hero is that he/she is better, stronger, more honorable, more-likely-to-have-armored-skin than normal people. In an MMO, everyone is a super-heroic, so and therefore, no one is a superhero, except the NPCs, and, really, who cares about NPCs in an MMO? Source:

Latest Xbox 360 Update Live, USB Support Added

The latest Xbox 360 system update has gone live, and with it comes the ability to use USB flash drives to store up to 16GB of content (profiles, game saves, downloadable content, etc.). While you can use any USB flash drive you want (assuming the 360 doesn’t flatly reject it), Microsoft is currently taking pre-orders for their own pre-configured 8GB drive from SanDisk, which also comes with a one-month Xbox Live Gold membership, that’s expected to go on sale next month. I haven’t had a chance to throw in a USB drive and test out the configuration and transferring process yet, but I’m guessing some of you have. What’s the verdict? Any problems so far? Red Dead Redemption Multiplayer Details Teased With Grin-Inducing Screenshot

Rockstar Games plans to reveal a muddied trough of details about the multiplayer modes found in their much anticipate open-world western Red Dead Redemption this Thursday. And to make the wait for said details just that much more painful, Rockstar went ahead and released a new screenshot (above) from the game’s multiplayer mode that has me positively giddy. Unofficial multiplayer details leaked a couple weeks back, and revealed that Redemption wouldn’t use a traditional lobby system, but rather just let players freely wander the game world where they could then meet up with other players, form gangs and then jump into the various multiplayer modes. I sincerely hope this is true, and thankfully, we won’t have to settle for speculation for much longer. I absolutely can’t wait to form my own Wild Bunch, and face off against other gangs in epic shootouts in the dusty streets and wild saloons of the Old West. Although, this isn’t terribly surprising since I

Sony’s Promises Less Arrogance

According to Sony’s SCEA VP of Marketing, Peter Dille, the company is not going to be arrogant anymore… or, more accurately, it’s marketing and advertising for the PlayStation 3 will shy away from arrogance. Like remember those weird PS3 ads with the baby in the white room? We’re probably not going to be seeing more like that.
