Britney Spears Is ‘Epitome Of Pop,’ Says Demi Lovato

Demi tells MTV News why she’s looking forward to Britney’s VMA tribute. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: MTV News Britney Spears is set to get the tribute treatment this Sunday at the 2011 Video Music Awards . At 29, she may be younger than your typical awards show tribute subject, but looking back at Brit’s catalog of great videos and memorable VMA moments , we think she deserves it. As part of the new generation of pop stars following in Britney’s footsteps, Demi Lovato is pretty excited to see how the icon will be honored on Sunday night. “Who isn’t a Britney Spears fan?” Lovato asked, just days before the show goes live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. “My favorite Britney Spears song is ‘I Wanna Go,’ ’cause it’s the latest song that she has and I love it.” Go behind the scenes as Britney films her 2011 VMA promo. Since Spears first took the VMA stage back in 1999, alongside ‘NSYNC, she’s managed to rack up five performances and take home four Moonmen, the first of which was back in 2008, over 11 years after her first appearance on the show. At this year’s show, she’s up for two awards for her video for “Till The World Ends,” Best Pop Video and Best Choreography. Demi has a simpler reason for a Britney tribute: ” ‘Cause she’s the ultimate pop star; nobody can touch her,” Lovato said. “She’s been around for such a long time now and she’s the epitome of pop. So when I think of pop music, I think of her.” While Demi is gushing about Brit’s long pop career, she’s poised to launch the next phase of her own. She will drop her album Unbroken next month. Its lead single, “Skyscraper,” rocketed to the top of the charts when it was released earlier this summer. What are you hoping to see in the Britney Spears tribute? The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. VMA Expert Kreayshawn Excited To ‘Harass Celebrities’

Sunday’s Video Music Awards red-carpet host aces MTV News quiz. By Kelley L. Carter, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Kreayshawn Photo: MTV News Kreayshawn jokes that she didn’t grow up with cable TV, but that didn’t stop her from acing an MTV News Video Music Awards quiz. The Bay Area rapper took part in our mock game show, and even impressed herself with how much she knew about past VMA performances. She stumbled a bit over the first question — Who closed last year’s Video Music Awards? — guessing David Bowie, Eminem and Birdman before coming up with the correct answer: a red-suit-wearing Kanye West. She also scored correct guesses when she answered which song Britney Spears sang in her debut Video Music Awards performance (“… Baby One More Time”) and what Madonna song Katy Perry sang (“Like a Virgin”) when she fronted the house band one year. Sounds like she’ll do just fine come Sunday night, when she works the red carpet as a host for MTV.com. Others who’ve filled this role in past years include Coco Rocha, Christian Siriano and Adrienne Bailon. “I’m super excited to be the red-carpet host at this year’s VMAs,” Kreayshawn said. “I can harass celebrities about what they’re wearing, what they ate before they got to the carpet, all sorts of funny stuff.” The 21-year-old was featured on Saturday’s (August 27) new episode of “When I Was 17” with other VMA Best New Artist nominees Big Sean and Tyler, the Creator . The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Lady Gaga’s VMA Performance Inspired By ‘Archetypes Of Psychology’

Gaga tells MTV News about the ideas behind Sunday’s big show opener. By Christina Garibaldi Lady Gaga Photo: MTV Lady Gaga has graced many an awards show stage in the past two years, and this Sunday will mark her second performance at the MTV Video Music Awards . But there’s one significant difference this year: Gaga’s opening the show . Hoping, as always, to keep us guessing, she’s has been tight-lipped so far about her highly anticipated appearance, but she did tell MTV News about the rather high-minded inspiration behind it. “Right now, I’m obsessed with the archetypes of our psychology and all the different people we can become or have become in the past,” Gaga said. “Our potential for the future and how do we in our minds sort of compartmentalize our different personalities. So that’s something that I’m fascinated with right now. It’s almost as if I’m reviewing my life as a play.” So how does all that come into play when coming up with a memorable VMA performance? “My approach to music and performance is not just about what happens on the stage,” Gaga said. “My whole life is a performance, and it’s about pushing the boundaries of pop culture and for myself, deciding where the stage begins and ends, not allowing anyone else telling me when or how I can perform. I can perform when I choose.” Balloons? Blood? Jo Calderone? See what Gaga fans are hoping her VMA performance will include. Gaga is confident that she will deliver what her Little Monsters want on Sunday night, since the creative idea for her set came to her just as fast as the idea behind her bloody 2009 VMA “Paparazzi” performance . “It came as quickly as the last one did,” Gaga said. “Any good performance flows out easily. If I have to think about it too much, something is wrong.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards http://www.mtv.comwill air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. ‘The Hunger Games’: A VMA Cheat Sheet

Brush up on your districts before Jennifer Lawrence presents an exclusive sneak peek from the movie on Sunday! By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lions Gate Welcome to the dystopian world of “The Hunger Games.” North America is no more. Natural disasters and war did away with the continent we knew and gave rise to a whole new land called Panem: 13 districts overseen by an authoritarian Capitol. Then came the Dark Days, a power-to-the-people, down-with-the-Man revolution that obliterated one district and resulted in an annual, gladiatorial tournament known as the Hunger Games. Now meet Katniss Everdeen, an impoverished teen who feeds her family thanks to some badass bow-and-arrow skills and a stubborn refusal to play by the Capitol’s rules. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark — hardly friends, nor possessing the bloodthirsty verve of their opponents — find themselves reluctant participants in the 74th Hunger Games. What happens from there forms the basis of Suzanne Collins’ page-turner of a novel, which Lionsgate is now adapting for the big screen with an eye on a March 2012 release. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the franchise or all this Katniss craziness is totally new to you, now’s the time to get up to speed on all there is to know about the Jennifer Lawrence-starring film . Because at the 2011 Video Music Awards on Sunday, MTV is set to debut the first-ever look at footage from the flick. So check out our “Hunger Games” cheat sheet for everything there is to know before the big show. The Reaping In March of 2009, Lionsgate snapped up the rights to “Hunger Games,” which was published the previous fall. It was the first volume of what would become a trilogy — and a New York Times best-seller for more than 100 weeks. The key question among fans quickly became, ‘Who will play Katniss?’ We had some initial suggestions — including “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” star Jodelle Ferland — but early reports suggested “Kick Ass” star Chlo

Chris Brown VMA Set: ‘Get Ready,’ Swizz Beatz Warns

After hitting the stage himself last year, producer/rapper looks forward to watching Lil Wayne, Pitbull performances. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Chris Brown Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images LOS ANGELES — Swizz Beatz has been to the big show before. The sought-after producer/rapper hit the VMA stage last year to join Drake and Mary J. Blige for a memorable performance of “Fancy,” and on Sunday, he’s amped to watch Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and Pitbull do their thing. Beatz spoke to MTV News just hours before taking the stage at the Taco Bell Feed the Beat MTV2 VMA concert on Friday (August 26) at the Music Box in Los Angeles on a bill featuring Chiddy Bang and Wallpaper, and he offered some advice to Weezy and Pitbull about making VMA headlines. “The big stage is a different stage. I think it’s an opportunity to bring out even more of the creative,” he said of the need to bring a different level of game for the VMA broadcast. “Because when you’re on that big stage, you know the whole world is watching you, and people can really see your true talent and your craftsmanship.” He also recalled looking out on the crowd of his peers last year and remembering that it was all just a haze. “Honestly, when I’m onstage, I can’t really see the crowd,” he said. “The lights and everything shining in your face, it’s like a blur and you’re in your zone … [but] you can feel the crowd and your motivation is to stay focused and know that that tape is rolling and you better not mess up now, because it’s live.” After VMA performer Chris Brown jumped onstage during one of Swizzy’s recent Las Vegas events to unveil the new Beatz tune “Dance Like a White Girl,” the producer said the reaction was “pandemonium.” That’s why he’s excited about Brown’s VMA slot, warning, “Everybody get ready. Y’all better get ready.” Brown’s choreographers, Rich and Tone , seconded that emotion, telling MTV News that we will see Chris in “1,000 percent mode.” Even with his table-hopping performance still on people’s minds, the pair said Sunday night could be on a whole other level. “We’ve been working with Chris for many years; I’ve never seen him this way on this performance ever,” Tone said. “He’s pulling out all his tricks on this one. He’s definitely gonna show you something fresh and new; something he has never done before.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice — who may or may not be in Cobra Starship — sound off on 2011 nominees. By James Montgomery VMA “experts” Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice Photo: MTV News In addition to looking a whole lot like Cobra Starship’s Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez, world-renowned journalists Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice are also the go-to guys for hot scoops and slightly unnerving personal revelations. So it makes sense that they’d be in Los Angeles this week: After all, it’s the location of the 2011 Video Music Awards . After a few hours spent marinating in the SoCal sun, boy, do the revelations get personal. Earlier this week, as Cobra Starship were rehearsing for their VMA Pre-Show performance , MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with the dynamic duo to get their take on the field of nominees for the big show. Much like our previous encounters , Bagwell and Twice had an awful lot to say. For example, both are beyond excited to see what Lady Gaga will do in her VMA-opening number (“If I could put my money on it, I’m gonna bet she’s gonna be walking out in somebody else’s skin!” Twice enthused), and both can’t wait to see who takes home the Moonman for Best Male Video (Bagwell is partial to Cee Lo Green’s “F— You,” since “[It’s] how my ex-wife Teresa says good morning to me!”). And while they seemed mystified by most of the VMA noms — in response to Nicki Minaj’s Best Female Video nod for “Super Bass,” Bagwell let it be known that he’s “more of a tilapia fan,” and Twice was convinced that not only were the Foo Fighters Asian, but their Best Rock Video-nominated “Walk” clip was actually spelled “Wok” — they both agreed on a favorite in the night’s biggest category, Video of the Year. “I’m going to have to go with [Tyler, the Creator’s] ‘Yonkers,’ ” Bagwell enthused. “I once dated a gal who lived up there whose [ censored for your protection ]. I miss you, Cheyenne. Give me a buzz sometime.” You know what? Perhaps it’s best if you just watched it all for yourself. Check out the video above for Bagwell and Twice on the 2011 Video Music Awards. View at your own peril. Pitbull: Lindsay Lohan’s VMA Tickets Are At Will Call

‘I’m actually surprised and, in an ironic way, kind of honored,’ Pit says of actress suing him over ‘Give Me Everything.’ By James Montgomery, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Pitbull Photo: MTV News Pitbull made headlines when he invited Lindsay Lohan — currently suing him over the lyrics to his hit “Give Me Everything” — to Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards , where Pit will be performing the song with Ne-Yo and Nayer. “We’ll be performing at the VMAs, and as a matter of fact, I’d like to send out an invitation to Lindsay Lohan,” he said in a statement on his Planet Pit website . “Hopefully, she can come with me to the VMAs, and we can figure this out.” Of course, with the big show just around the corner, Lohan has yet to publicly RSVP, so when MTV News caught up with Pit during rehearsals for the VMAs, we had to ask if he’d heard from the actress. Lohan specifically took issue with the line “Got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan,” which Pit actually saw as a positive lyric. “As far as the whole Lindsay Lohan situation, it’s real simple: I’m actually surprised and, in an ironic way, kind of honored. The record, if you listen to it from beginning to end, [is a] very positive record. I start off even talking about my own life,” he said. “So in no way, shape or form am I here to defame, degrade or hurt anybody. It was my way of showing love or helping out, I would think. “But either [way], I said, ‘You know what? Performing it at the VMAs, [I] would like to invite her out,” he continued. “And anybody who knows my reputation [knows I] don’t do no publicity stunts. I’m not really about none of that. … So I said it, I meant it, and if she takes it, great. If she doesn’t, cool. But she will have her tickets at will call.” Pitbull didn’t stop there: If (or when) Lohan picks up her tickets, he hopes she’ll join him onstage for his performance of “Everything.” Maybe she could even rap the offending line. “That would be great, to be honest with you,” he laughed. “That might just throw Lindsay Lohan through the roof. People would love her if she did that! But then again, that’s just my two cents on her PR team and what they should be doing.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Lady Gaga VMA Wish List: Balloons, Bones And More

Little Monsters make predictions (and suggestions) for Gaga’s fashion and opening performance come Sunday. By Kara Klenk, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello Lady Gaga Photo: WireImage When Lady Gaga was asked about plans for her opening performance at Sunday’s 2011 Video Music Awards , she told MTV News, “I’m pretty good at knowing what my fans want me to do.” Mother Monster is certainly in tune with the needs of her Little Monsters, and if anyone could guess what the unpredictable pop star has planned on Sunday, it’s them. Some fans predict that her 2011 performance will be an extension of 2009’s blood-soaked “Paparazzi” number . One of Gaga’s Twitter followers wrote, “I reckon it’s gonna be quite eery + scary, and full of blood!” Many thought it would mimic her VMA promos , which had a jazzy style and Gaga playing piano. Others thought she would tap into themes from her “Yo
