Eminem’s ‘Not Afraid’ Takes Best Hip Hop Video

After performing, Slim Shady jetted to New York to continue tour. By Rochell D. Thomas Eminem performs during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage When MTV’s 2010 Video Music Award nominations were announced last month and Eminem earned eight , he was not pleased, complaining that the September 12 scheduling of the awards ceremony scratched the quickly spinning record that is his tour schedule. “Apparently, MTV doesn’t care that I have two massive stadium shows on the other side of the country the day after the VMAs,” he said. “F me, right?” Well, we wouldn’t exactly say that. Not that it matters. Apparently, Slim Shady could only spare enough time to open the VMAs. After his medley performance of “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie” (for which Rihanna joined him onstage), he jetted, literally — leaving the Nokia Theater to catch a red-eye flight back to New York for his Monday-night gigs. Guess he didn’t think he’d win. Which he did. Marshall Mathers’ clip for “Not Afraid” beat both rap royalty and newcomers to take the Best Hip Hop Video award. His competition: “Airplanes” by B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams), Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz’ “On to the Next One,” Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness” and the mega video that was expected to take this category’s cake — the Hype Williams-directed “Forever,” featuring Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem, himself. Since Em had left the building, Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, who presented the award, accepted on his behalf. “I’m going to take it to Columbia,” she joked. Drake Brings Out Mary J. Blige, Swizz Beatz For VMA Performance

The heavyweights performed sophisticated rendition of Thank Me Later track ‘Fancy.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Mary J. Blige and Drake perform during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty If we have learned anything at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , it’s that Drake really knows how to spiff up a joint. Mining the same midcentury swagger the Toronto MC worked in his VMA promo, Drizzy side-stepped the outrageous antics the big show is known for in favor of a sophisticated rendition of his Thank Me Later track “Fancy.” Following an introduction by stars of the movie “The Social Network” — including Justin Timberlake, who dubbed Drake the “most exciting artist in music” — the set opened with Mary J. Blige channeling her “I’m Going Down” video in an all-black suit and fedora, as a similarly dressed Swizz Beatz manned a grand piano. Then Drizzy descended an illuminated staircase in a white dinner jacket below a sign that read “Drake” in bold lights. He began to spit, and the MC didn’t let the grown-man look slow him down, rattling off the lyrics with energetic abandon. Mary then broke it down, belting out rhymes about ladies with “their nails done, hair done, everything did” with an effortless power that reminded the audience why she’s the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul. During rehearsals, Drizzy dished that the performance was inspired by the midcentury cool of the Rat Pack, an iconic crew of entertainers that included stars like Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra. “I watched the Rat Pack live at the Copa Room,” Drake, who was nominated for Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video awards , told MTV News. “It was just so relaxed. They were smoking cigarettes and drinking Jack. It was women everywhere. It wasn’t, ‘Let’s just rap and be epic and be huge.’ They were like, ‘I really run this. Me and Sammy and Dean.’ I wanted to get up there and look fly.” It’s fitting that Drizzy was joined by Mary J. and Swizz for his VMA performance, as “Fancy,” which was crafted by the superproducer, was originally slated to be a joint for the Queen. But Drake knows a hit when he hears it. “He was like, ‘That’s the record I need,’ ” Swizz told MTV News about Drake’s reaction upon first hearing the song. Swizzy initially offered to re-create the song’s feel on a different track. “I said, ‘OK, I’ll make you that.’ ” Apparently Drizzy wasn’t having it and insisted on the actual “Fancy” song, not a replacement. “No. That’s the record I need,” Drake said. MTV’s VMA Twitter Tracker Lets Stars, Fans Control The Conversation

Celebs at the Nokia Theatre will see who’s trending during the show on Sunday night. MTV’s VMA Twitter Tracker Photo: MTV Even though many of the people watching the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards aren’t going to be physically in the Nokia Theatre on Sunday night (September 12), MTV is making sure they’re a part of the experience. Carrying on a tradition that began at last year’s VMAs, MTV is letting viewers in on the live conversation with the Twitter Tracker . Thanks to a partnership between MTV, the Stamen Group and Twitter, the Tracker allows viewers to track the popularity of the various VMA performers and presenters over the course of the night as the subjects’ images grow and shrink according to how many times they’re mentioned on the social-networking site. MTV News senior vice president Benjamin Wagner said that last year the program tracked over 2 million tweets. “It was just so apparent last year that our audience is talking about the VMAs all over the place, not just on MTV.com,” Wagner said. “We wanted to be able to reflect that conversation instead of just ignoring it, like acting as if it wasn’t happening on MTV it wasn’t happening.” The Tracker was also incorporated into the MTV Movie Awards with the added ability to tweet directly from the Twitter tracker platform. During that show, users figured out how they could manipulate their favorite stars’ presence on the Tracker. MTV Mobile senior vice president Michael Scogin, who originated the project, said this is what he hoped would happen with the tracker, and influenced the most recent incarnation that will be used tonight. The general layout of the website now looks like a leader board, with the various celebrity performers and presenters ranked by their popularity during the awards show, and actually subtly encourages those on Twitter to manipulate the rankings over the course of the night. The board updates itself constantly but allows users to navigate a minute-by-minute timeline of the show to see who is most popular at any given point. By clicking on a particular celeb, you can see what people on Twitter are saying and join in the conversation as well. “If version one that we did at the VMAs last year was simply about representing the conversation, version two — by adding the ability to tweet — at the Movie Awards was about contributing to the conversation from the interface,” Scogin said. “And then version three, that we’re rolling out for the VMAs this year, is about people influencing the conversation.” The Twitter Tracker will be a large part of both the VMA Pre-Show and main show. MTV’s new TJ, Gabi Gregg , will be monitoring the tracker periodically during the pre-show, starting at 8 p.m. ET, and will read tweets from users on the air. A huge wall of television monitors inside the Nokia Theatre will show the Twitter Tracker during commercial breaks, allowing all the celebrities at the show to see what’s trending. Scogin said he hopes that will encourage to jump into the conversation as well. With Twitter-happy attendees like Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Kanye West, the possibility doesn’t seem unlikely at all. “It’s really about making Twitter part of the show,” explained Chloe Sladden, the director of media partnership at Twitter. “It’s not like, oh, there’s this other thing, this other technology that we’re going to kind of shoehorn in in some way, but MTV is taking the leap to say, ‘This is the show, this is an element of the show, so let’s make it seamless.’ And what you’ll see is really weaving Twitter into the very experience.” Tune in tonight for the

Robyn And Deadmau5: A VMA Teaser Clip

‘It’s a departure from the original,’ deadmau5 tells MTV News of his remixed version of Robyn’s ‘Dancing on My Own.’ By Kara Warner Robyn Photo: MTV News Can’t wait to see Robyn and deadmau5’s expectedly epic and unique performance during tonight’s Video Music Awards ? We then see Robyn again, sporting a snazzy green beret, doing a little more dancing, and then working the mic and leaning out into the crowd over her platform. “It’s a departure from the original,” deadmau5 told MTV News of his remixed version of Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own.” “The original is more of a dance kind of feel. I wanted to take the syncopation right out of it.” As the house artist, deadmau5 is also responsible for reworking hits from Travie McCoy and Jason Der

‘Jersey Shore’ Exclusive VMA Clip: Snooki And Angelina Throw Down

A fight over a guy escalates in this heated preview. By Kelley L. Carter Snooki in episode ten of “Jersey Shore” season two Photo: MTV Could this be the end of Angelina? According to the much-anticipated exclusive “Jersey Shore” preview clip that premiered during the Video Music Awards pre-show Sunday (September 12), the fists go flying in the second half of season two. The drama seems to bubble over the surface after a guy Snooki brought home — whose name is apparently Alex, and we assume he’s there for her to hook up with — seems to gravitate to or get hit on by Angelina. “Go away,” Snooki says to the guy, to the delight of her roommates. “Go over there with Angelina. Stay over there. You’re not allowed over here.” In the confessional, Snooki brings up how Angelina connected with another former hookup of hers, their roommate Vinny. “I think Angelina loves my sloppy seconds. She goes to Vinny, and she’s trying to go to what’s-his-name,” she says. “Like, what are you doing? If you want to make out with me, just ask. I will say yes.” Back in the living room, the two go at it, hurling insults and profanities at each other. “You just brought home Alex. Did you hook up with him tonight? Probably. Do I care? No,” Angelina tells Snooki, with the rest of the cast and a few extra guests looking on. “Doesn’t matter to me.” Then Angelina tells Snooki, “I don’t want your sloppy seconds.” “Obviously you do,” Snooki snaps back at her. “This is why nobody likes you.” And then, Angelina goes off. On all the roommates. “I don’t give a f— about anybody in this house. All of yous in this house are f—ing fake. And I want you all to know that I can’t stand any of yous. Fake mother—-ers, all of you.” Snooki’s reply? “OK,” she says as she prepares to attack. “Hold my earrings, please.” Watch “Jersey Shore” Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. VMA White Carpet Covered In Plastic Until Stars Arrive

Staging supervisor Aaron Chawla has steam cleaners, vacuums in place in case of unexpected stains. By Kara Warner VMA white carpet Photo: Jonathan Goldner / MTV News With the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards mere hours away, everyone here at MTV is working overtime in preparation to make this year’s show the best and brightest ever. Earlier this week, the white carpet crew (a team of about 55) started assembling the soon-to-be star-studded area, built to capture this year’s theme, “Hollywood Mansion.” Crew members pulled 16-hour shifts during the five days for the five days leading up to the show. On Saturday, nearly 600 feet of white carpet were rolled out and promptly covered in plastic in order to prevent any unwanted sullying. Staging supervisor Aaron Chawla said he won’t be removing it until the last possible minute before the VMA Pre-Show begins. In the event of any unforeseen spills or stains, Chawla assured us his team has plenty of tools in place for quick fixes, including vacuum cleaners, Resolve, steam cleaners and, if all else fails, props that can be creatively placed over any stubborn markings. The worst possible substance to come in contact with the white carpet? Chewing gum. Adam Stewart, production manager for staging and light, agreed that gum is a challenge; he also mentioned colored liquids as potential hazards. He hopes that if celebs bring liquid refreshment along with them for their walk (

B.o.B Predicts VMAs Will Be ‘One Hell Of A Show’

‘I really want to see what everyone has up their sleeve as far as performances go,’ MC says. By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B Photo: MTV News B.o.B is not only taking the stage to perform during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , but the Atlanta rapper is up for a number of awards himself, from Best Male Video to Best Hip-Hop Video. So while he sits in the house at the Nokia Theatre, he’ll have a front-row seat to take in the show. Although Florence and the Machine are favorites of the “Nothin’ on You” star, he told MTV News he’s looking forward to all of the performances. From Drake to Usher to Justin Bieber, B.o.B said he thinks everyone is going to deliver. “I really want to see what everyone has up their sleeve as far as performances go,” he explained. ” ‘Cause for me, I take performing very seriously. So I can bet everyone else is like that. So it’s gonna be one hell of a show.” B.o.B has had a good year, as the upstart MC scored a #1 debut album and three top 10 hits, “Nothin’ on You,” “Airplanes” and “Magic.” The lanky lyricist will take the stage to perform “Nothin’ on You” with Bruno Mars and then “Airplanes” with Paramore’s Hayley Williams. The Saturday rehearsal with B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Williams was relaxed and filled with plenty of impromptu moments. Bruno Mars and B.o.B each busted out into covers, of Drake’s “Find Your Love” and the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy,” respectively. And B.o.B and Williams, who had recorded “Airplanes” separately and later shot their parts for the video at different times, met for the first time . Tune in tonight for the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles!
