Eminem, Other Performers Find Fitting Home In VMA Set

Eye-popping design puts mid-century architecture ‘through the prism of 2010,’ says show’s executive producer. By James Montgomery The VMA stage during Usher’s rehearsal Photo: Ciel VanderVeen/MTV LOS ANGELES — Sure, stars like Lady Gaga, Eminem, Kanye West and Justin Bieber are getting top billing at the Video Music Awards. But all of that might change the minute the show goes live on Sunday (September 12), because there’s a much bigger star waiting to steal their thunder: the VMA set itself. Custom-made in New York and Los Angeles, assembled over the course of two (very long) weeks inside the Nokia Theatre and drawing inspiration from the sleek mid-century designs of Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen, the set is a massive, all-encompassing thing, swooping and soaring (like, really high ) and practically swallowing up the entirety of the theatre itself. It’s so impressive, in fact, that you don’t have to be an architecture enthusiast to appreciate it. “Everyone who walks in and sees it is like, ‘Aaah!’ ” Dave Sirulnick, VMA executive producer, told MTV News. ” Rick Ross came in and said, ‘It’s like Pandora.’ ” Without revealing too many details — mostly because details don’t really do it justice — the VMA set is a multi-tiered, multi-layered design that stretches more than 70 feet out into the theatre seats, and just as high in the air. There are portions made out of tightly stretched fabric, giving the set a living, organic feel. A giant panoramic video screen stretches behind the entirety of the thing. There are LED lights everywhere . And, of course, there’s . Yeah, it’s a pretty big deal. “What we wanted to do is to use this black box — which is what the Nokia is — in a kind of different way. We tried to create a more intimate space, and that’s one of the reason why we created a kind of center stage and brought it much closer to the audience,” production designer Florian Wieder said. “What I tried to do was create a kind of three-dimensional space, where the entire space is part of the show. We use it all … the whole ceiling, the floor, the walls. It’s really an impressive thing.” And while the design is based on the sort of classic mid-century architecture that defines Los Angeles, the set, much like the show itself, is far from stodgy. Quite the opposite, in fact. “It’s based on mid-century architecture, only put through the prism of 2010,” Sirulnick said. “It’s classic design that reaches through the eras, just like the music itself.” Like we said … you have to see this thing. Sure, Gaga and all the stars are great, but the set is really something too. Tune in and see for yourself. Tune in tonight for the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles! 30 Seconds To Mars, Ke$ha Plan Big VMA Arrivals

Can this year’s nominees rival the elephants and yachts of years past? By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: Myriam Santos/ Kayda For much of the past decade, the MTV Video Music Awards has really been two shows: The one where they hand out the Moonmen, and the one that occurs on the red carpet, where the stars try their very best to outdo each other with over-the-top arrivals. From yachts to 18-wheel trucks, elephants to horse-drawn carriages, how you arrive at the VMAs has become just as important as whether you take home an award. As you can probably imagine, sometimes, things get a little crazy. “Usually, artists don’t let us know [how they’re arriving] until the last minute, which makes things interesting,” Video Music Awards Pre-Show executive producer Ryan Kroft told MTV News. “A lot of times, they’ll want to do things like land a hot-air balloon on the carpet, or drive a car down the carpet, but generally, the fire marshal frowns on those kinds of things, so we have to tell them ‘no.’ ” Still, there are plenty of ideas that do get the green light, and they’re just as epic as the stars that thought them up. And this year’s VMA arrivals are no different, though for aesthetic reasons, they’re slightly scaled back. “In New York, we had stars arriving on a fire truck, a double-decker bus, but that wouldn’t play this year,” Kroft said. “The carpet is designed to look like the stars are arriving at a Hollywood Hills mansion — white, chrome, glass — so having someone arrive with a marching band would seem somewhat out of place.” But there are big arrivals nonetheless: One of the biggest involves 30 Seconds to Mars , who have already started touting their entrance as being thoroughly crazy. “30 Seconds to Mars are recreating a scene from their ‘Kings and Queens’ video ,” Kroft explained. “They’ll have an army of bicyclists arriving with them, and they’ll be riding bikes themselves. Most of the bicyclists are from the video.” Going equally big is Ke$ha , who has a few surprises ready for the VMA carpet. We don’t want to give it all away, but here’s what we can reveal: “Ke$ha has big plans for the carpet. I can’t talk about all of them, but she is arriving in a Delorean, which she got herself,” Kroft said. “It’ll be like ‘Back to the Future.’ ” And, in keeping with grand tradition, there are still plenty of stars who haven’t said how they’re going to be arriving — Jay Sean is planning something “big and sexy,” Soulja Boy Tell’em has some swaggadocious plans in the works, and Bruno Mars is still plotting, too — and then, there’s Lady Gaga, who … well, you never know what she’ll do. “We still don’t know what some people are doing,” Kroft laughed. “The only way you’ll know is to tune in to the VMA Pre-Show and watch.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Steve-O Says ‘Jackass 3D’ Shows ‘Totally Different Me’

‘Being clear-headed and sober makes it more painful,’ he says of ‘scary’ stunts in flick previewing at Sunday’s VMAs. By Jocelyn Vena Steve-O Photo: MTV News Fans won’t have to wait until October 15 to get a taste of the mayhem set to take place in “Jackass 3D.” An exclusive clip from the flick will premiere during the MTV Video Music Awards , where the cast will also be presenting on Sunday. One of the movie’s stars, Steve-O, is super excited for fans to check out the preview. “I can’t wait. It’s going to be awesome. We made a great movie. Everybody’s gonna love it. People are gonna be waiting to see how being sober and filming ‘Jackass’ is different [for me],” he told MTV News at the VMA Radio Forum on Friday. “Being clear-headed and sober makes it more painful, more scary and the first thing I say is, ‘I’m Steve-O, why do I have to be Steve-O?’ ” He wouldn’t get too specific about his favorite part of the movie, but Steve-O did note that the film starts with one very eye-catching scene. “I think that after the opening credits, like, the first scene that I’m in, I think it’s pretty great,” he said. “It’s just awesome. It’s a good movie.” While doing many of the painful stunts in “Jackass 3D” proved to be quite the challenge for a now-sober Steve-O , he was certainly up for it. “I was eager to do as much as I could. I, unlike Johnny Knoxville and some of the other guys, was feeling pretty sure I didn’t want to risk paralysis or death,” he joked. ‘Knoxville just needs to risk paralysis and death, but that being the case, I was really eager to get involved in as much stuff as I could, and I think I’m in this new movie more than either of the first two. It was a totally different me and it was a real blessing to do that.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. B.o.B Promises ‘Spectacular’ VMA Performance With Hayley Williams

‘I’m gonna attempt to levitate,’ the ‘Airplanes’ MC jokes about first-ever set with Paramore collaborator on Sunday. By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B Photo: MTV News The clock is counting down to Sunday’s VMAs, and for Video of the Year nominees B.o.B and Hayley Williams it means finally meeting for the first time. The two collaborated on the rapper’s top-five hit “Airplanes” but have never met — they recorded the song and shot their parts for the video separately. They’re set to meet Saturday afternoon (September 11) in Los Angeles when they rehearse for their performance at the 2010 Video Music Awards. “I think just the fact that me and her are performing on the stage at the same [event] is gonna be spectacular,” B.o.B told MTV News on Friday about anticipation for his appearance with the Paramore singer. B.o.B is also set to perform with Bruno Mars, bringing their #1 collaboration “Nothin’ on You” to the Nokia Theatre. And the combination performance, comprised of the two smash collabos, is among the most-anticipated. The Atlanta lyricist is excited about his prime-time performance and said he was thinking about a new wrinkle for his set. “I’m gonna attempt to levitate,” he joked. “I don’t know if the dynamics of the room will allow me to do that, ’cause it requires me to really pull from the sky.” B.o.B is one of the most-nominated artists at the VMAs, scoring nods for Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video, among others. He actually found out about the recognition via Twitter. “I was just on Twitter checking to see what’s up, and then I saw I got nominated, and I was like, ‘All right, don’t mind if I do.’ ” he shared with us last month. The potential big haul left the melodic MC feeling special. “It’s very special to me,” B.o.B said. “I think it’s a lot more special than the success of the singles, because this reflects the work I’ve put in over the years and the word of mouth I’ve helped create. It’s definitely amazing. I’m trying to find the words to explain it, but I can’t. It’s inexplicable. I’m a real simple man, so, you know, I accept every gift with generosity and gratitude.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Travie McCoy Says He’s ‘Stoked’ For Eminem’s VMAs Set

‘Billionaire’ MC, who’ll hit the stage with house artist deadmau5, is most excited to see Em’s opening performance. By Kelley L. Carter Travie McCoy Photo: MTV News While Travie McCoy fans are no doubt excited to see him perform at the VMAs, we wondered, who does he most want to see perform at the awards show on Sunday? “Definitely stoked to see Eminem ,” McCoy told MTV News of Slim Shady, the show’s opener. “I’m really excited to also see what deadmau5 is doing. I know what I’m doing with him, but I’m excited to see what he’s doing with everyone else.” Deadmau5, a house music icon , is the house artist for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards . He follows performers like Wale, Mark Ronson, Travis Barker and the late DJ AM, all of whom kept the pace of the awards show going between musical acts. Twenty-eight-year-old Toronto native deadmau5 (born Joel Zimmerman) is a hotly anticipated act at the show this year, as one of the most in-demand producers on the house music scene. “Dance wasn’t always considered pop, and people like Lady Gaga and [David] Guetta and those guys really brought it out to the commercial market,” deadmau5 said about bringing his sound to the masses. “I’m just getting a lot more fans and God bless it, and that’s the goal of being an artist is to get yourself heard by any means possible.” Other 2010 VMA performers include Eminem, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, B.o.B, Drake, Linkin Park, Usher, Paramore and Florence and the Machine, as well as McCoy, Jason Der

Florence And The Machine’s VMA Performance Will Be ‘Otherworldly’

‘We want viewers to watch it and say, ‘That was spectacular,’ ‘ awards-show exec producer says. By James Montgomery Florence Welch at her VMA rehearsal on Friday Photo: John Shearer/Wireimage.com LOS ANGELES — Florence and the Machine have performed at award shows in the past, but they’ve mostly been back at home in the U.K., and they’ve definitely never been as eye-catching, ambitious and downright exuberant as her upcoming performance at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards . It’s a matter of necessity. After all, around the rest of the world, Florence Welch is a very big deal, a critical and commercial darling with an armload of hits and a devoted fanbase. But here in the U.S., she’s just starting to break through, thanks in no small part to “Dog Days Are Over,” a triumphant tune that’s recently become the soundtrack to many a TV show and commercial (most recently, it appeared in trailers for Julia Roberts’ “Eat Pray Love”). So her VMA performance is clearly a big deal, another (rather large) steppingstone on her way to Stateside success. And, somewhat accordingly, everyone involved with the show is aiming high. “People have heard the song on television, but maybe those people haven’t made the connection to Florence the artist, so that’s part of what her performance is going to be about,” Dave Sirulnick, VMA executive producer, told MTV News. “It’s going to be beautiful, breathtakingly done and otherworldly. And maybe it will help launch her here in the States. We want viewers to watch it and say, ‘That was spectacular.’ ” Judging from what we saw in rehearsals Friday (September 9), that may very well be the reaction. Part classic revue, part joyous sing-along, part kinetic, hippie-esque freakout, it’s a strangely perfect summation of Welch herself, not to mention a rather fitting tribute to her VMA-nominated “Dog Days” clip. There may not have been any explosions (or floral arrangements) — like Welch promised when we spoke to her Thursday — it hardly mattered. This is definitely going to be a big performance, one people are going to be talking about. And yes, they’ll probably be saying, “That was spectacular.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
