REVIEW: Fassbender and Mortensen Duke It Out, Amicably, in A Dangerous Method

David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method is probably the most fun you’ll ever have watching a movie about Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud duking it out — and nurturing a deep-rooted but fragile friendship — in early 20th century Austria and Switzerland. In fact, when I first saw Viggo Mortensen done up in his trim little Freud beard, I nearly laughed out loud — not because he looked ridiculous, but because he looked so right. Mortensen has become one of Cronenberg’s go-to guys in recent years, and you can see why: Even in a period film like this one — a picture that runs the heavy risk of being ponderous and stiff — he can slip himself into the scenery with a “Don’t mind me, here in my Sigmund Freud getup” naturalness.

Lynne Ramsay Sets Her Sights on Moby Dick… in Outer Space

After writer-director Lynne Ramsay ( Ratcatcher, Morvern Callar ) debuts her latest film, this December’s moody Tilda Swinton-Ezra Miller pic We Need to Talk About Kevin , she’ll set her sights on more classic fare: Herman Melville’s Moby Dick … only, set in space. “We’re taking the premise into the realm of the galaxy; it’s creating a whole new world, and a new alien, a very psychological piece” Ramsay told Radio 5 Live’s Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo. “Mainly taking place in the ship, a bit like Das Boot , so it’s quite claustrophobic. It’s another monster movie, in a way, ’cause the monster’s Ahab.” Stick around for more happenings in today’s Buzz Break.

Don’t Be A-Freud of The Dark: Watch the Trailer for A Dangerous Method

It’s not often that I’m intrigued, bothered, titillated, confused, and exhilarated after watching a trailer, but A Dangerous Method does the trick. In the new preview for the dazzling Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender Freud drama, we watch as Knightley begs to be beaten (not sexy), Fassbender reinvents Talented Mr. Ripley sailboat glamor (sexy), and Freud (Viggo Mortensen) drops in for some insight (id-tickling sexy)!

Federal Employee Union Buys Radio Ads to…Counter Limbaugh’s Criticism of Federal Worker Pay?

“The nation’s largest federal worker union is taking to the airwaves to defend rank and file federal workers against growing anti-government sentiments,” the Washington Post’s “ Federal Eye” blogger Ed O’Keefe reported Tuesday , the same day Rush Limbaugh picked up on a USA Today story , “Federal pay tops private workers: Compensation gap doubled in decade.” O’Keefe explained: “The American Federation of Government Employees plans to spend about $200,000 to air a 60-second radio ad in more than 30 markets, including Washington and several Southern cities, according to a spokeswoman. The ad stars AFGE President John Gage and workers from the Bureau of Prisons, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Social Security Administration, telling listeners to ‘trust me’ as they carry out their work.” ( AFGE’s press release ) In a Wednesday afternoon post, headlined “Gov’t Employees Union to Spend $200K to Counter Rush,” DCRTV’s Dave Hughes interpreted it as an effort to counter Limbaugh: Yesterday, titanic righty talker Rush Limbaugh, heard in DC on WMAL (630 AM), slammed federal workers as being highly paid and unproductive. He said they’re pencil pushers and don’t “produce” anything real or substantial. Limbaugh pointed out that three of the nation’s richest counties are in the DC area, and it’s all because of the federal workers living there. O’Keefe’s post has a list of the 30 cities where the ad will air, “primarily on news/talk, country and sports talk radio stations in the South.” MP3 audio of the 60 second ad. The audio clip is also posted with AFGE’s press release and in O’Keefe’s post.
