Thousands remain stranded after floods Channel 4 reports seven weeks after Pakistan was hit by the worst floods in its history

Seven weeks after Pakistan was hit by the worst floods in its history, Channel 4 News Foreign Affairs Correspondent Jonathan Miller finds people are still without shelter and safe drinking water. Tens of thousands of people remain stranded in villages and farmsteads across the northwest of Sindh Province, seven weeks after Pakistan's disastrous floods first struck. Channel 4 News has flown over the region with US marines who are providing a lifeline to those marooned without any supplies in what is still an ocean of floodwater. Even as this airlift continues, new areas are still being inundated. Further south, near the town of Dadu, we travelled to a region in which 150 villages have been flooded since Tuesday. The fresh flooding is not due to more rain, but was caused by the breaching of levees surrounding Manchar Lake, which is fed by the Indus River and had grown to four times its normal size. Aerial view Flying out of the Pakistani Army base at Pano Aqil, four huge CH-53 Super Sea-Stallion helicopters and four smaller CH-46 Sea Knights have spent more than a month flying several such mercy-missions each day. Their airdrops have been focused on a region, on the east bank of the River Indus, southwest of the city of Jacobabad, whose population was evacuated last month. From the air, travelling at 170 miles per hour, all you can see below is water, stretching from horizon to horizon for mile after mile. The helicopters land where they can find enough dry ground to put down, but usually end up dropping their aid supplies, flour and high-energy biscuits, as they hover 20 feet above the ground. The US Marines, accompanied by Pakistani soldiers, are greeted by scenes of desperation, as hungry villagers, who will not have eaten properly in weeks, chase after the jettisoned boxes and sacks and fight the powerful downdraft of the helicopter rotors to get to them first. It is the survival of the fastest. The Marines, many of whom until this mission had been stationed in the Gulf of Aden in anti-piracy operations off Somalia, have been deeply affected by what they have witnessed in Pakistan. “I see our mission here as trying to help people who are starving. I see our mission as trying to alleviate human suffering. That is our mission,” said Rear Admiral Sinclair Harris, Commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Five. “If a side bit of it happens with better will, better relations with the Pakistan government, that's fine. I know we've made a difference, especially to those starving on ground. These people have not eaten for four to six weeks. We will do anything we can to get out and help them sustain while we wait for roads to open up. I know we’ve made a difference.” Flying over this region we spotted many farms, villages, and even entire towns which had been entirely abandoned, their inhabitants evacuated to the hundreds of camps which have been set up for displaced people. There are more than 200 such camps in the city of Sukkur, which straddles the Indus, a short distance from the big Pakistan army base from which the US Marines fly. More than 150,000 people have converged on Sukkur, having been forced to abandon their homes. Contaminated water In villages where people do remain, drinking water sources will have been contaminated. No one has yet begun to assess the health situation in these isolated areas. There have been warnings of a looming malarial epidemic as mosquitoes are breeding in huge numbers in the stinking, stagnant flood water as it evaporates. Other waterborne diseases pose serious health risks, while malnutrition, particularly among children, could lead to many deaths. Rice crops in flooded areas are ruined and the seed crop destroyed. Ten million Pakistanis will be reliant on food aid for at least another year. Ever greater numbers are being added to the ranks of the homeless. South of Dadu, near the town of Bhan Saeedabad, more than 150 villages have been submerged since Tuesday, the result of a kilometre-long breach in nearby Manchar Lake. The lake proved unable to cope with the pressure of floodwater build-up. We took a boat to the village of Jadani, a few miles south of Bhan Saeedabad. Half the village has been submerged and many of its 650 residents have evacuated following a government warning. We heard of many villages, however, which were hit by the floodwater without warning. 'Shock and sadness' The rice fields of Jadani, which is home to the Pahnwar tribal clan, are now under six to eight feet of water. A woman whose house was also submerged told us: “We are in a state of shock and sadness. Many of our homes have been destroyed,” said Naseeba Khatoon. “I am staying in someone else's house for now. The children are hungry. There is no clear clean water to drink. There is no sanitation. What will we do? When the water recedes, we will just have to rebuild,” she said. Thousands of people have fled into Bhan Saeedabad district, but they are receiving little in the way of assistance and Channel 4 News did not encounter any international relief organisations in the area. The Pakistan Navy is running a rescue operation, ferrying villagers who have been forced to evacuate, to Bhan Saeedabad. On the southern side of this flooded area, the city of Sehwan which is sacred to Sufis, has been badly affected. More than 1,400 houses are reported to have collapsed there. Local newspaper reports on Friday said the floodwater now threatens to breach another protective embankment between Sehwan and Larkana, hometown of the Bhutto dynasty. added by: treewolf39

Rare Asian Unicorn Spotted for the First Time in Over a Decade in Laos

However the animal died after been captured by villagers in a remote region of Laos. The critically endangered mammal, which is found in the mountains of Vietnam and Laos, was first discovered in 1992. The saola, which looks similar to the antelopes of North Africa, but is more closely related to wild cattle, is so elusive it has been likened to the unicorn, despite having two horns, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) said. It has never been seen by conservation experts in the wild and the last confirmed sighting was from camera traps in 1999. The animal is listed as critically endangered, with just a few hundred thought to exist in the wild. Conservationists said that with none in zoos and almost nothing known about how to keep them in captivity, if the species vanish in the wild they will be extinct. The Laos government said villagers in the country's central province of Bolikhamxay captured the saola in late August and brought it back to their village. When news of the capture reached the authorities a team was sent, advised by the IUCN and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), to examine and release the animal. Unfortunately the adult male saola was weakened by several days in captivity and died shortly after the team reached the remote village. It was photographed while still alive. IUCN saola working group coordinator William Robichaud said: ''The government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic and WCS are to be commended for their rapid response and efforts to save this animal. ''We hope the information gained from the incident can be used to ensure that this is not the last Saola anyone has a chance to see.'' The provincial conservation unit of Bolikhamxay province said the animal's death was ''unfortunate'' but the incident confirmed an area where it was still found and the government would immediately strengthen conservation efforts there. And Dr Pierre Comizzoli, a member of the IUCN saola working group, said study of the animal's carcass could yield some good from the incident. ''Our lack of knowledge of saola biology is a major constraint to efforts to conserve it. ''This can be a major step forward in understanding this remarkable and mysterious species. ''It's clear that further awareness-raising efforts about the special status of saola are needed but the saola doesn't have much time left. ''At best a few hundred survive, but it may be only a few dozen. The situation is critical.'' It is not clear why the villagers, who reportedly found the animal in the village's sacred forest, took the saola into captivity, but the authorities are urging villages in the area not to capture them and to release any they might encounter. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/wildlife/8006076/Asian-unicorn-spotted-for-firs… added by: EmperorThan

Christian man wants to castrate his son for masturbating

My youngest son has been masturbating a lot lately and no matter how many beatings I give him, he just doesn't stop. I looked to see if the Bible had any solutions to this and Mark 9:43 popped into my head. Mark 9:43: And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: I don't want to cut his hands off since he needs them to hold his Bible. So I was wondering if this could be applied to his genitals instead. If he doesn't have any genitals, he won't be able to masturbate, right? My neighbor did the same thing with his dog last year and he's been behaving a lot better since. I have a good friend, a retired butcher from my village and he's willing to perform the surgery next weekend. I know my son won't be able to bring me any grandchildren but I'll just leave that up to my other sons instead. However, I'm not entirely sure whether this is the right thing to do but I think this might be the only way to save my boy from burning in hell for eternity. What are your thoughts on this? Is anybody familiar with this solution? If so, did it work? http://www.gonarilla.com/files/images/castration_0.gif added by: jubal

Jersey Shore bimbo Mike “The Situation” took to his Facebook page to respond to reports that he unknowingly participated in a Village Voice ‘queer issue’ photo shoot that included an expose on Jersey’s down-low gay guido scene. He wrote: “As for the Village Voice SitUAtioN – it’s not for me to judge somebody’s sexual preference and in my opinion the SitUaTIoN looks good as hell and that is my main concern. It just so happens that The SitUaTiON has mass appeal and happily reaches a very broad audience – This is not my first cover and definitely not my last – SitUATIon NATION” Also, he recently added this picture from an event to his Facebook page: http://www.tabloidprodigy.com/?p=15565 added by: knowandtell

Elizabeth Reaser Has ‘No Idea’ If Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart Are Dating

‘I’m also, like, the clueless person on set,’ ‘Twilight’ co-star says. By Jocelyn Vena Elizabeth Reaser Photo: MTV News Are they? Aren’t they? It’s the question that has been plaguing Twilighters since Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart first auditioned on Catherine Hardwicke’s bed. When they spoke to Oprah Winfrey about it earlier this month, they laughed off the chatter about their relationship. And in an interview with USA Today the actors admitted we haven’t seen them out together because they’ve been deliberately hiding. But if you’re hoping their co-star Elizabeth Reaser, who plays vampire matriarch Esme Cullen, has any insight into their dating status, it seems she is the wrong girl to ask. “Oh! I don’t know!” she laughed when asked about the rumors when she stopped by the MTV Newsroom earlier this week. “I haven’t talked to Rob or Kristen in a while, so I have no idea. Like I said, you probably know way more than I do.” Reaser said she’s not really in tune with the personal lives of the people she works with. “I never know anything,” she admitted. “I’m also, like, the clueless person on set that has no idea what’s happening. And I think I like it that way.” She even joked that if she saw the pair making out on set, she would just assume, “Oh, they must be rehearsing!” Really, the actress has more important things on her mind. “I’m always just, like, looking for the peanut M&M’s, so I don’t know what’s going on,” If you were Elizabeth Reaser, would you spill the beans about RPattz and KStew? Crystal Bowersox’s Friends Looking Forward To ‘American Idol’ Finale

‘We come from this little town, and to see her do it … is pretty awe-inspiring,’ one friend tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox on “American Idol” Photo: FOX During Wednesday night’s results show, Crystal Bowersox talked about how exciting it is for her to see how her run on “American Idol” has brought some hope to her struggling hometown of Toledo, Ohio. She got emotional when reliving her trip home last week and the joy she saw in the eyes of her northwest Ohio fans. On Thursday (May 20), that pride was peaking after the single mom made it to next week’s finale . “I feel incredible about her making it all the way,” said good friend Nate Woodward , who was in the audience for both shows this week in Los Angeles. “I’m not surprised, because I certainly think she has the ability, but it’s still kind of weird. We come from this little town, and to see her do it — even though we know she has the talent — is pretty awe-inspiring.” Just like Bowersox, Woodward hesitated for a second on Wednesday night when host Ryan Seacrest announced her finale bid, because he said it’s a bit hard to hear the audio from the stage in the “Idol” studio. “It was confusing,” he said of the moment when Seacrest told Crystal she’d be joining Lee DeWyze in the finale, to which she said “I’m safe? I’m safe?” “We felt the same way Crystal did, and the crowd was all asking, ‘What did he say?’ But once we figured it out, it was kind of emotional,” Woodward recalled. “I was with her boyfriend, Tony, and his two sisters, and we just all jumped up and down and clapped and got pretty emotional.” Woodward said he also got emotional when watching the footage of the hometown visit, because he knows what a huge impact her success has had on people back home and how genuine her feelings are about the trip back. “It really does give us something to feel good about right now,” he said. “People have something to smile about. But more than anything else, it comes down to the fact that she does actually have a gift and talent.” Will she win? Nate sure hopes so, and he thinks she deserves it, but he knows Lee is stiff competition and that no matter what happens Crystal — whom he used to watch play to a dozen or so people from behind the bar at the Village Idiot bar back home — has already won just by getting this far. “I wasn’t surprised that Crystal advanced yesterday, but still, I was nervous and happy when they announced that,” said John Schafer, the booker for the Village Idiot . “I believe that, clearly, she has been the best from the beginning and is the one to beat. I like Lee, he’s good, but Crystal’s voice shines.” Are you rooting for Crystal to win it all next week? Let us know in the comments! Crystal Bowersox’s Friends Says She’s Earned ‘American Idol’ Finale Spot

Crystal Bowersox’s Friends Says She’s Earned ‘Idol’ Finale Spot By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox visits her hometown of Toledo, Ohio Photo: Getty Images Though she didn’t appear to have the same kind of moment Lee DeWyze did on Tuesday, Crystal Bowersox’s did plenty to earn herself a slot in next week’s season-nine finale , according to her hometown friends. “Crystal left no doubt in my mind last night that she should win this,” said John Schafer, who has booked Bowersox at Maumee, Ohio’s Village Idiot bar dozens of times. “[Her] ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ was a chilling rendition of McCartney’s song that I’d bet he’d be proud of.” Perhaps he’s biased, but Schafer disagreed with the judges on their assessment of DeWyze’s take on Leonard Cohen’s oft-covered “Hallelujah,” calling it a “pale effort.” Even though he’s not a big Melissa Etheridge fan, Schafer thought Bowersox nailed her cover of “Come to My Window,” which he suspected would also make the original’s author proud. And while he thought Lee chose well with his cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” he again felt it didn’t do much with the song and wasn’t that impressive. “I guess I’m saying that Crystal’s version of both songs could be substituted for the originals, and Lee’s could not,” he said. Nate Woodward, a cook and bartender at the Village Idiot and a good friend of Bowersox’s, was in the audience for Tuesday night’s performance. It was his second trip out to Los Angeles to see her on the show, and he agreed that MamaSox should be onstage next week. But he also admitted that it felt like DeWyze did a better job than Crystal, though he said she was clearly superior to Casey James. “I’m pretty sure she’ll make it through to the top two,” Woodward said, still a bit groggy after getting an early wake-up call to discuss the show. “I thought both of Crystal’s songs were awesome,” he said, referring to the Etheridge tune and an Ellen DeGeneres-picked cover of McCartney’s solo hit. Woodward said the studio audience seemed clearly stacked with screaming teenage DeWyze fans, with a smaller contingent of Bowersox backers and a much less-vocal group of James supporters. He didn’t get a chance to talk to Crystal after the show, but Woodward said he spoke to her after Monday’s rehearsal, and she was feeling “super pumped” about both songs. “The reaction in the room as great,” he said about the studio audience’s feeling about Bowersox’s songs. “Everyone around us was talking about how well she did. I’m gonna be nervous as hell tonight. But hopefully she makes it through, and it will be exciting.” How do you think Crystal did on “Idol” Tuesday night? Share your reviews in the comments.
