ABC Confounded Stabber Not Right-Winger, Still Exploits ‘Knife Attack That’s Cut Deep Into National Debate Over Faith and Fear’

ABC News sure wanted to paint Michael Enright, the 21-year-old charged with stabbing Muslim cab driver Ahmed Sharif in Manhattan, as a bigoted hate crime perpetrator who is the inevitable result of Islamophobic opposition to the mosque near Ground Zero. And the network didn’t let the facts get in the way of their agenda – though they were confounded by how he “has a baffling profile” since “he volunteers with a church group that promotes peace and understanding” which “actually support[s] putting that Islamic center down here near Ground Zero.” Sighed Diane Sawyer: “Really confounding, the story of that suspect.” Sawyer, who made the incident her top story (CBS ran a short item, Katrina-obsessed NBC skipped it and most other news), led the Thursday World News by imparting great meaning: “This might have been a small story in another time, but it’s touched on a deeper wave of concern because of all the tension over that mosque and cultural center planned near Ground Zero. At the center of the story, a Muslim cab driver, stabbed two days ago.” Reporter Jeremy Hubbard also saw a larger significance as he played off the weapon used: “It is the knife attack that’s cut deep into a national debate over faith and fear.” Hubbard, who at least did acknowledge very few criminal acts are targeted at Muslims, soon relayed the spin of those who see anti-Muslim hate: “The attack, some Muslims are certain, was fueled by what they call fearmongering over the Islamic cultural center and mosque planned for this site near Ground Zero. There are three flash points cited by Muslims across the country where the rage is evident…” Earlier Thursday, on Good Morning America, Hubbard wondered if the stabbing was “proof the rhetoric surrounding the proposed Islamic cultural center and mosque near Ground Zero has created a heightened fear and prejudice against Muslims.?” More on Thursday morning coverage in this post by Scott Whitlock: “ ABC, CBS: Did ‘Heightened Fear and Prejudice’ of Ground Zero Mosque Prompt NYC Violence? ” Monday night: “ ABC Works to Rehabilitate Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf’s Reputation After Pining for George W. Bush ” From the ABC World News of Thursday August 26, transcript provided by the MRC’s Brad Wilmouth: DIANE SAWYER: Good evening. It was a remarkable moment today in the season of headlines about religious tolerance, and what it is to be Muslim in America. This might have been a small story in another time, but it’s touched on a deeper wave of concern because of all the tension over that mosque and cultural center planned near Ground Zero. At the center of the story, a Muslim cab driver, stabbed two days ago. And by his side today, the Mayor of New York. Why? Jeremy Hubbard on the attack and fallout. JEREMY HUBBARD: It is the knife attack that’s cut deep into a national debate over faith and fear. AHMED SHARIF, STABBING VICTIM: I said, “Please, do not kill me, I am very hard worker. I work very hard.” HUBBARD: Ahmed Sharif – who’s driven a cab for 15 years – slashed across the head, neck and shoulders. MICHAEL BLOOMBERG, NEW YORK CITY MAYOR: This should never have happened. Violence and being disrespectful to each other is not part of why America was formed. HUBBARD: The suspect, 21-year-old Michael Enright has a baffling profile. An honors film school student, he volunteers with a church group that promotes peace and understanding. The only clue to possible bias, war journals on him at the time of his arrest. Diaries he filled out during a recent trip to Afghanistan, where he made a college film about U.S. troops serving there. Those journals, police say, talked about Afghans who were ungrateful for the American military presence in their country. Still, the attack, some Muslims are certain, was fueled by what they call fearmongering over the Islamic cultural center and mosque planned for this site near Ground Zero. There are three flash points cited by Muslims across the country where the rage is evident. A radical church in Gainesville, Florida, gaining worldwide attention for its plan to mark September 11 by burning hundreds of copies of the Koran. Then, there’s the mosque in Madera, California, vandalized three times in a week. And Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where hundreds filled city hall, openly hostile over plans for a mega-mosque that some locals  fear will breed terrorists. An ABC news poll last year showed that nearly half of Americans held an unfavorable opinion of Islam, many of them believing the religion encouraged violence. On the other hand, the most recent FBI crime stats show in 2008, there were 123 anti-Islam bias crimes nationwide a number that paled in comparison to at least one other religion [1,055 against Jews]. And even in New York, police say crimes against Muslims are not on the rise, despite what happened to the cabbie who made an appeal for us all to get along. SHARIF: This is the city of all color, races, all religion, everyone will live here side by side peacefully. HUBBARD: There is one other note about that suspected stabber that muddies the water even further. That peace group he volunteered with, they actually support putting that Islamic center down here near Ground Zero where we are tonight. The suspected stabber, by the way, is charged with attempted murder as a hate crime, Diane. SAWYER: Really confounding, the story of that suspect. Thank you, Jeremy Hubbard, reporting from New York tonight.

ABC, CBS: Did ‘Heightened Fear and Prejudice’ of Ground Zero Mosque Prompt NYC Violence?

ABC’s Good Morning America and CBS’s Early Show on Thursday both speculated as to whether the stabbing of a New York City cabbie was prompted by a climate of anti-Islamic anger. At the same time, GMA and NBC’s Today both ignored the fact that the attacker, Michael Enright, volunteered for a charity supporting the mosque. ABC’s Jeremy Hubbard wondered if the violence was ” proof the rhetoric surrounding the proposed Islamic cultural center and mosque near Ground Zero has created a heightened fear and prejudice against Muslims .” Early Show’s Chris Wragge bluntly asserted, “And this ongoing debate may have led to a brutal anti-Muslim attack here in New York City.” However, only CBS’s Elaine Quijano pointed out this salient piece of information: “Now, as for Michael Enright, he had volunteered for a group that promotes interfaith dialogue. The group Intersections International has supported the controversial cultural center and mosque near Ground Zero.” ABC’s Hubbard vaguely explained, “[Enright] also volunteers for a collegiate, church-affiliated group, dedicated to promoting peace and understanding.” ABCNews.com , on the third page of a three page story, did acknowledge the connection : Enright had traveled to Afghanistan with an organization called Intersections International, a New York-based group that promotes itself as promoting justice and peace across lines of faith (and has come out in support of the Islamic cultural center’s construction.) NBC’s Today had almost no coverage of the violence. Natalie Morales briefly explained, “An Honors student is charged with attempted murder and assault after allegedly stabbing a New York City cab driver in the neck. The victim said the suspect, Michael Enright, asked him if he was a Muslim and then slashed him.” A transcript of the Early Show segment, which aired at 7:12am EDT, follows: CHRIS WRAGGE: A new poll says a growing number of Americans are against the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero. And this ongoing debate may have led to a brutal anti-Muslim attack here in New York City. CBS News correspondent Elaine Quijano has the disturbing details this morning. Elaine, good morning. ELAINE QUIJANO: Good morning to you, Chris. Well, police say the attacker was a college student who had done volunteer work in Afghanistan. He is now behind bars facing multiple counts, including attempted murder and assault as a hate crime after allegedly attacking a cabbie who said he is Muslim. Police say 21-year-old Michael Enright asked a New York City cab driver whether he was Muslim. When he answered that he was, Enright, authorities say, attacked. First uttering in Arabic a common greeting in the Muslim world, peace be unto you. AHMED SHARIF (slashing victim): I’m driving. He ask me where I’m from. I said, “Bangladesh.” Then, second question he asked me, “Are you Muslim?” I said, “Yes.” Then he told me “As-Salamu Alaykum.” QUIJANO: The alleged hate crime took place against the backdrop of a highly emotional debate over whether an Islamic cultural center, including a mosque, should be built two blocks from Ground Zero. The protests are spreading from New York to Tennessee where an intense debate over a proposed mosque near Nashville has raged all summer. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: It’s not about religion. It’s about stopping Tennessee homegrown terrorists. QUIJANO: There are nearly seven million Muslims and 1200 mosques in the United States. But a CBS News poll found 71 percent of Americans say it’s inappropriate to build a mosque so close to Ground Zero. Among them, some families of 9/11 victims. KEN FAIRBEN (father of 9/11 victim): I understand their religious beliefs. I understand they should have a place to play, an educational center. I have no problems with that whatsoever. But not there. Definitely not there. QUIJANO: Now, as for Michael Enright, he had volunteered for a group that promotes interfaith dialogue. The group Intersections International has supported the controversial cultural center and mosque near Ground Zero. If Enright is convicted of attempted murder, he faces a maximum eight to 25 years in prison.

Pakistan Floods Have Ravaged Bear Sanctuary, Killing 20 of the 23 Bears Living at Kund Park Sanctuary | Video

Pakistan floods ravage bear sanctuary Aug 20, 2010 Sadly, WSPA must report some distressing news from our bear baiting project in Pakistan. The recent floods have severely affected the Kund Park sanctuary, resulting in the tragic death of 20 of the 23 bears living there. The death of these much-loved bears has devastated BRC and WSPA staff and we know it will be equally upsetting for our supporters. Suzi Morris, WSPA UK Director said: “I hope it is of some comfort to know that it was the generosity of WSPA supporters that allowed the final chapter of these bears’ lives to be one of peace and tranquillity, safe from the violence and fear of bear baiting.” Rescue against the odds Initially it was feared that all of the 23 bears at Kund Park had been lost but Babu, Maylu and Sohrab were found alive in the floodwaters. In difficult circumstances, BRC staff transported them to the near-complete, new sanctuary at Balkasar. It is now more urgent than ever that building work on the Balkasar sanctuary is finished and the team at BRC are working flat out to achieve this. Over the past few weeks the world has watched as heavy monsoons have caused the worst floods in Pakistan for 80 years. At the time of writing, up to 14 million people have been affected by the floods and an estimated 1,600 have lost their lives. The damage to the Kund Park sanctuary is so severe that is seems unlikely that it can be rebuilt in the near future, perhaps at all. Thanks to WSPA supporters, the new Balkasar sanctuary is due to be completed in October and will have the capacity to provide a home for Babu, Maylu and Sohrab and for the remaining bears still being used to fight in bear baiting arenas. Why was the sanctuary so badly hit? The Kund Park sanctuary is located between the Indus and Kabul Rivers in North-West Frontier Province, the epicentre of the recent floods. A flood warning system was in place but the dramatic rise in floodwaters – reaching 60ft above river level – did not give BRC staff enough time to remove the bears from danger. The team did all they could to try to secure the safety of the bears by moving them to higher ground, staying at the sanctuary for as long as possible before they had to evacuate for their own personal safety. Tireless search and rescue As soon as the floodwaters receded, Fakhar and his team worked around the clock to search for the bears. Three bears were found alive but after days of searching, they had to face the devastating realisation that 20 of their beloved bears were confirmed dead. WSPA is extremely impressed by the fortitude of BRC staff and their response to such a devastating tragedy. Many of the local staff were personally affected, some losing their homes to the floods, but this did not stop their dedication to securing the safety of the bears they have spent years caring for. _____ Amongst the drowned bears were names that WSPA supporters will know well Star: rescued only months earlier from the horrors of bear baiting, thanks to BRC and the wonderful response of WSPA supporters to a recent appeal. Lailah: saved from bear baiting in 2008 and featured in a WSPA appeal. Rustam: liberated by Victor Watkins, WSPA’s bear expert, in 2001 and one of the oldest bears at the Kund Park sanctuary. Dewa: confiscated from poachers in 2009 aged just five months old, was taken to the Kund Park sanctuary along with his brother, Babu, who was saved from the floods. The other two lucky survivors are three year old Maylu was rescued in 2006, saved from the black market bear trade. Sohrab is a two year old Asiatic black bear who had been living peacefully at the Kund Park sanctuary since 2007. added by: EthicalVegan

Venezuela, more deadly than Iraq

CARACAS, Venezuela — Some here joke that they might be safer if they lived in Baghdad. The numbers bear them out. In Iraq, a country with about the same population as Venezuela, there were 4,644 civilian deaths from violence in 2009, according to Iraq Body Count; in Venezuela that year, the number of murders climbed above 16,000. Even Mexico’s infamous drug war has claimed fewer lives. Venezuelans have absorbed such grim statistics for years. Those with means have hidden their homes behind walls and hired foreign security experts to advise them on how to avoid kidnappings and killings. And rich and poor alike have resigned themselves to living with a murder rate that the opposition says remains low on the list of the government’s priorities. Then a front-page photograph in a leading independent newspaper — and the government’s reaction — shocked the nation, and rekindled public debate over violent crime. The photo in the paper, El Nacional, is unquestionably gory. It shows a dozen homicide victims strewn about the city’s largest morgue, just a sample of an unusually anarchic two-day stretch in this already perilous place. While many Venezuelans saw the picture as a sober reminder of their vulnerability and a chance to effect change, the government took a different stand. A court ordered the paper to stop publishing images of violence, as if that would quiet growing questions about why the government — despite proclaiming a revolution that heralds socialist values — has been unable to close the dangerous gap between rich and poor and make the country’s streets safer. “Forget the hundreds of children who die from stray bullets, or the kids who go through the horror of seeing their parents or older siblings killed before their eyes,” said Teodoro Petkoff, the editor of another newspaper here, mocking the court’s decision in a front-page editorial. “Their problem is the photograph.” Venezuela is struggling with a decade-long surge in homicides, with about 118,541 since President Hugo Ch

Time’s Mark Halperin: 9/11 Families Need to Be Led Through a Discussion About the Ground Zero Mosque

Time magazine’s Mark Halperin engaged in the ultimate condescension Monday morning, arguing that families of 9/11 victims need to be guided by others into the Ground Zero mosque debate. “For the families of the victims of 9/11, whatever emotions they want to have, I respect and I honor. But somebody needs to lead them through a discussion,” Time’s senior political analyst lectured on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” He mentioned a meeting that reportedly took place between the mosque’s planners and the 9/11 families, which he insisted “needs to happen.” Halperin said the meeting “did not go well,” but added it was and is necessary. “As I said before, whether it moves or stays, that discussion must happen. This must be done with reconciliation. And it’s got to be led by leaders, not by people like Rick Lazio…and facts,” Halperin noted. The show picked up fresh from where it left off last week, bashing the supposedly inflammatory rhetoric from the right opposing the mosque and sympathizing – while disagreeing – with the families of 9/11 victims over the planned mosque two blocks away from Ground Zero. Host Joe Scarborough added that reconciliation doesn’t necessarily entail moving the mosque. “The leaders of this Islamic cultural center, Mark, have to show reconciliation towards the victims of 9/11,” Scarborough responded to Halperin. “That doesn’t necessarily mean moving the Islamic center.” “But what it may mean is asking them, say, ‘It’s not going to move. What can we do, though? What can we put inside of this center that, as a memorial to the memory of your father, or your son, or your daughter? What can we do to help you?'” Scarborough cried that the situation has already become an international problem, and Halperin warned it could escalate to greater proportions. “If the resolution is not handled well,” he remarked, “the signal it could send abroad could put us at war with a billion people forever.” Scarborough argued that moving the mosque now would constitute “giving into the hate speech of Newt Gingrich and people like him.” “To fear the building of this center down there at Ground Zero is to admit America is weak,” he asserted. “This is a chapter in our history that we’re going to – we as a country, the people associated with this – are going to be ashamed of,” he said of the heated debate over the mosque. A transcript of selected quotes from the show, which ran on August 23 from 6 a.m.-9 a.m. EDT, is as follows: JOE SCARBOROUGH: To fear the building of this center down there at Ground Zero is to admit America is weak, is to admit that we can’t handle the building of a community center which is – somebody said it yesterday, and this is what I thought was all along – it is basically a Muslim version of a 92nd Street ___. That’s what this place is going to be. MIKA BRZEZINSKI: It’s not just fear, Joe. They’re demonizing the Imam. They’re demonizing the people who want to do it. They are creating lies to promulgate hatred in this country. This is where we are, all over again. (…) SCARBOROUGH: This is a chapter in our history that we’re going to – we as a country, the people associated with this – are going to be ashamed of. (…) SCARBOROUGH: This is an international situation. … This is sending a horrific message across the Muslim world. (…) MARK HALPERIN: As bad as this is for relations in the United States, the signal that it sends abroad – the debate now is sending a bad signal. If the resolution is not handled well, whether it moves or not, if it’s not handled well, the signal it could send abroad could put us at war with a billion people forever. (…) SCARBOROUGH: This would not be happening if George W. Bush were President, for two reasons. First of all, a lot of these people on the right wouldn’t be trying to sully his name, that’s what this is about for a lot of these freaks on the far right. They want to embarrass Barack Obama, because oh gosh, his middle name is Hussein. (…) HALPERIN: You gotta confront the people who find it bothersome. Why is it bothersome? Why is it bothersome? If it’s not a center that meant to celebrate the violence of 9/11, if it’s not a recruitment center, why is it bothersome to anybody?  (…) HALPERIN: For the families of the victims of 9/11, whatever emotions they want to have, I respect and I honor. But somebody needs to lead them through a discussion. … Discussion needs to happen, as I’ve said before. (…) SCARBOROUGH: The leaders of this Islamic cultural center, Mark, have to show reconciliation towards the victims of 9/11. HALPERIN: And confidence. SCARBOROUGH: That doesn’t necessarily mean moving the Islamic center. But what it may mean is asking them; say “It’s not going to move. What can we do, though? What can we put inside of this center that, as a memorial to the memory of your father, or your son, or your daughter? What can we do to help you? There has to be some reconciliation. They can’t stiff-arm the 9/11 families. (…) BRZEZINSKI: But there’s no basis in order to worry that this would be insensitive. There are other things near Ground Zero and at the Pentagon that are similar. … They have a mosque 12 blocks away from Ground Zero, isn’t there one at the Pentagon? Am I wrong? (…) SCARBOROUGH: But at this point, if you want to move it up to the Upper West side? … At this point, I don’t know that we can do that. I don’t know that we can do that as a country, because it’s giving in to the hate speech of Newt Gingrich, and people like him, Rick Lazio who’s stoking fear, people down yesterday, trying to beat somebody up because they thought they were a Muslim. We can’t give in to that as a country.

Lindsay Lohan May Have Prescription To Blame For Drug Problems

Adderall may have exacerbated any existing issues, expert says. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: OutOfSightMedia/ Getty Images It may turn out that the disease that troubled actress Lindsay Lohan isn’t suffering from is the one that could have caused many of her recent problems. According to TMZ , the doctors at the UCLA rehabilitation facility where Lohan is currently 19 days into a court-ordered, 90-day inpatient stay reportedly believe that the “Mean Girls” star was misdiagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and that the commonly prescribed drug used to treat that disorder, Adderall, may have caused her to exhibit the irrational, manic symptoms similar to those of someone abusing cocaine or methamphetamine. Lohan’s lawyer has not returned requests for comment from MTV News, but Dr. Peter Breggin, a psychiatrist and leading expert on the dangers of the over-prescribing of psychiatric drugs, said it doesn’t really matter if Lohan, 24, was misdiagnosed or not. “Whether or not she was misdiagnosed, [Adderall] will have the same effect,” said Breggin, the author of “Medication Madness: The Role of Psychiatric Drugs in Cases of Violence, Suicide and Crime,” who has not treated Lohan and does not have first-hand knowledge of her case. “It’s a myth that it will have a different effect whether you have ADHD or not,” he explained. “If she was given Adderall, it’s entirely possible she would have a reaction that was indistinguishable from that of methamphetamine or cocaine, including producing manic or psychotic behavior.” While Adderall has helped many teenagers and adults suffering from ADHD gain control of their lives, Breggin said it is possible to become addicted to the drug, which, at high doses can cause out-of-control episodes. Add in an addiction to or chronic use of cocaine and other stimulants and, he said, that person could very easily be susceptible to the abuse of Adderall. “Adderall is pure amphetamine and it changes the neurotransmitters in a similar fashion [as other stimulants],” he said, noting that research in humans and animals has shown that the effect on those vital neurotransmitters is to make the person crave stimulants. “You don’t want to give someone an amphetamine who has or had a craving for methamphetamine or cocaine.” While Lohan has never discussed what issues have sent her to rehab three previous times, she has a history of arrests for drunk driving , including one in 2007 during which police allegedly found a packet of cocaine in her pocket. “You would not want to give anyone, for any purpose, Adderall if they were known to abuse methamphetamine or cocaine. You’re just setting them up for being hooked on Adderall,” Breggin said. Before she went to jail, it was revealed that among the prescription medicines Lohan was taking was the sleep aid Ambien, which didn’t surprise Breggin. “Ambien is sold for insomnia, but it’s a sedative and you use it to come down,” he said. “It’s common to go from a stimulant to a sedative to try to control the experience of going up and down.” Before her pair of DUI arrests in 2007, Lohan was often been spotted drinking late into the night. Breggin said that also didn’t surprise him, since alcohol, like Ambien, is a sedative used to counteract stimulation. The upshot of the alleged misdiagnosis, according to TMZ’s unnamed source familiar with Lohan’s treatment at UCLA, is that the former judge in Lohan’s case, Marsha Revel, may have “overreacted” when she ordered the actress to serve 90 days in rehab. The site claimed that Lohan has been weaned off all the medications she was taking — which also included the serious pain medication Dilaudid, antidepressants Zoloft and Trazodone, and acid-reflux treatment Nexium — with no adverse reaction. She has also reportedly not shown symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. With all that in mind, the new judge in the case will meet with lawyers next week to discuss a possible early release for Lohan from in-patient. Sean Penn Questions Wyclef Jean Presidential Campaign

Earlier today, Wyclef Jean officially kicked off his campaign to be the next President of Haiti . But the singer already faces opposition from an Oscar winner and well-known activist in the region: Sean Penn. Asked by Larry King for his take on Jean’s political ambitions, Penn cited allegations that Wyclef mishandled $400,000 in earthquake-relief donations and said the artist has been absent from his native country. “This is somebody who’s going to receive an enormous amount of support from the United States, and I have to say I’m very suspicious of it,” said Penn, who runs a 55,000-person tent camp via his J/P Haitian Relief Organization, adding: “I’m not accusing Wyclef Jean of being an opportunist; I don’t know the man. One of the reasons I don’t know very much about Wyclef Jean is that I haven’t seen or heard anything of him in these last six months that I’ve been in Haiti.” Wyclef didn’t respond by claiming he’s been active in the nation itself, but instead says he’s perfect for the position because he understands “the psychology of the Haitian people.” “What I want Sean Penn to know is, if I was not in Haiti after [former president] Jean-Bertrand Aristide left, if I did not create [my charity] Y

Eminem And Rihanna’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Video: Love On Fire

Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan play a couple whose passion turns violent in the dramatic clip. By Shaheem Reid Eminem Photo: Jeff Kravitz/Getty Images Eminem ‘s new video for “Love the Way You Lie” tells the story of two lovers (played by Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan ) whose passion turns violent as their relationship vacillates between ecstasy and agony. The cinematic video, which debuted Thursday night (August 5) on MTV, starts with a close-up of the song’s co-star, Rihanna , singing the chorus in front of a burning house. We then see Fox sitting in the living room of a home with a flame in the palms of her hands. From there, Eminem raps in a field. The video transitions back to the story of seemingly doomed lovers, and we see Fox and Monaghan lying in bed asleep. The first to wake, Fox sees the name “Cindy” written on her boyfriend’s hand and a phone number underneath. She angrily wakes him up, and scenes of them fighting and then making love intertwine, showing how their relationship goes from one extreme to the next. As the second verse starts, we get a flashback of how the couple met: in a bar. The attraction was instant, and they proceed to shoplift vodka from a liquor store. Later, we return to the bar, as Monaghan hits a man over the head with a bottle just because he was playing pool with Fox. Toward the end of the second verse, Eminem joins Rihanna, performing in front of the burning house. As the video progresses, we see more of the war going on between the two lovers. A flame eventually covers Fox, Monaghan and Eminem in three separate instances. The video’s last shot goes right back to the beginning of the clap, as the lovers lie in bed asleep. “I think we tried as hard as we could to not glorify the violence, to try and explain that this was a relationship that is by no means ideal and a relationship that probably should have ended a lot sooner than it did,” Monaghan told MTV News recently. “The concept of ‘Love the Way You Lie’ was essentially a look at the relationship that Eminem was in with his wife, Kim, so I kind of felt like I was playing Eminem a little bit, and Megan Fox was kind of playing Kim. “It’s the story of them getting to know each other, and it’s the story of their tumultuous relationship, and it was the story of the breakdown of their relationship,” he continued. “Ultimately, what I think he’s trying to say in the song … is that he should have walked away a little bit quicker than he did and not let it get as messy as it did.”
