Via NYPost This pigeon ruffled a few feathers — including its own — by trying to smuggle a cellphone to a jailbird. The high-tech carrier pigeon flew to the Combita prison in Colombia on a wing and a prayer and was caught outside with the device attached to its back. It was unclear who hatched the plan for the poor pigeon, which was grabbed by two guards who removed the little harness holding the phone. Prison officials said they are investigating which inmate was behind the birdbrained mission. Who the hell trained this pigeon?! Mike Tyson??? Image via Twitter

Colin Kaepernick Wears Pig Socks, Takes Aim at "Rogue Cops"

Colin Kaepernick is not done stirring up controversy. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has become a household name, as well as a subject of major national debate, after he took a scandalous stance last Friday. During the playing of the national anthem prior to a preseason football game,  Kaepernick did not get up off the bench. He simply sat their quietly, refusing to show respect for the United States while its theme song played overhead. The arrow in the photo below is pointing at Kaepernick while he committed this act of defiance. It has gone viral, even beyond sports fans: Referencing the tragic rash of African-American deaths at the hands of police officers over the past several months, Kaepernick made it very clear why he’s taking this measure. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” he told NFL Media. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. “There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” Kaepernick has since said he’ll continue to sit down during the Star-Spangled Banner until some kind of “significant” change takes place. Now, with opinions divided between those disgusted over Kaepernick’s lack of patriotic respect and those who appreciate the attention he’s brought to a pressing national issue… a new controversy has arisen. Over an old topic. Photos surfaced today of Kaepernick wearing socks on the field that depict police officers as pigs. The photos are actually from training camp of this year, but Kaepernick did not hesitate to address the basis for this attire on Instagram. He was very upfront over why he made this fashion statement at the time. “I wore these socks, in the past, because the rogue cops that are allowed to hold positions in police departments, not only put the community in danger, but also put the cops that have the right intentions in danger by creating an environment of tension and mistrust,” he wrote. “I have two uncles and friends who are police officers and work to protect and serve ALL people. “So before these socks, which were worn before I took my public stance, are used to distract from the real issues, I wanted to address this immediately.” You’ve gotta admire Kaepernick for just coming right out and speaking his mind. He’s not beating around any bushes, he’s sticking up for what he believes in. Well, not everyone has to admire this, we guess. But some folks out there do. Kaepernick actually led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2013. His stock has fallen tremendously since then, as he actually lost his starting job to Blaine Gabbert last year. But no one is talking about Kaepernick’s failings as a quarterback now. They’re focused on his political beliefs instead. Do you agree with his stance… of sitting down? Do you think too much attention is being paid to the messenger and the way he chose to convey his message, as opposed to the message itself? Or do you just think Colin Kaepernick sucks as a human being? View Slideshow: 20 Scandalous Sports Stories And where do you think this scandal should slot in with above sports-related scandals?

C’mon Patti! Patti LaBelle Releasing A New Line Of Cobblers & Cakes For Walmart

Watch your sugar… Patti LaBelle Announces New Walmart Desserts After the success of her # PattiPies , Patti LaBelle’s back with more confection creations. The songstress/chef is debuting five new desserts at Walmart; three cobblers, a sweet potato loaf and an apple pecan cake. People Magazine reports: After the massive success of her sweet potato pies in 2015, the legendary singer has developed five new desserts which will be available exclusively at Walmart starting Tuesday, August 29. On the menu are three cobblers (apple, peach, and berry), apple pecan cake, and sweet potato loaf — a nod to last year’s pie that’s similar to banana bread. To help create the recipes, LaBelle drew upon family recipes as well as her own experimentation in the kitchen. “I’ve been cooking for most of my life,” she tells PEOPLE. “As you’re standing in the kitchen and you think of certain ingredients, you just put them in — sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t.” The desserts — which LaBelle says are “for anyone with good taste” — are pre-baked, you just have to toss them in the oven to warm them through again. And the best part? “You can even lie and say you made them,” she laughs. (Duly noted.) Will YOU be buying??? WENN, Walmart

Maine Governor Denies Being Racist … in Profane Homophobic Voicemail

Maine Gov. Paul LePage left a profane voicemail for a state lawmaker asking him to “prove that I'm a racist” after accusations to that effect. LePage, a Republican, left the voicemail for Democratic State Rep. Drew Gattine on Thursday, according to the Portland Press Herald. The uncensored audio (below) contains several explicit phrases. A bombastic politician and one who does not mince words, the 67-year-old is a frequent target of criticism and magnet for controversy. Earlier this week, LePage doubled down on comments he has made in the past about the racial background of drug dealers in Maine. He infamously said that “90-plus percent … are black and Hispanic people” in remarks that went viral and caused a media firestorm.  Subsequently, Gattine was identified by local media as having called LePage racist, though for his part, Gattine denies having doing so. In any case, LePage let him have it on his voicemail … “Mr. Gattine, this is Gov. Paul Richard LePage,” he says. “I would like to talk to you about your comments about my being a racist, you (expletive).” “I want to talk to you. I want you to prove that I'm a racist. I've spent my life helping black people and you little (expletive), socialist (expletive).” “You … I need you to … just friggin' … I want you to record this and make it public because I am after you. Thank you.” Be careful what you wish for? LePage apologized for the voicemail Friday, but said being labeled a racist is “the absolute worst, most vile thing you can call a person.” “I didn't know Drew Gattine from a hole in the wall until yesterday,” LePage said, and the accusation “made me enormously angry.” “When a TV reporter asked me for my reaction about Gattine calling me a racist … I called Gattine and used the worst word I could think of.” “I apologize for that to the people of Maine, but I make no apology for trying to end the drug epidemic that is ravaging our state.” On Thursday, the governor reportedly took credit for leaving the voicemail, and said he would like to challenge Gattine to a duel. “When a snot-nosed little guy from Westbrook calls me a racist, now I'd like him to come up here because, tell you right now, I wish it were 1825.” “And we would have a duel, that's how angry I am, and I would not put my gun in the air, I guarantee you, I would not be (Alexander) Hamilton.” “I would point it right between his eyes.” “[Gattine] is a snot-nosed little runt and he has not done a damn thing since he's been in this Legislature to help move the state forward.” Friday, LePage walked back the idea of shooting his political rival, saying that “Obviously, it is illegal today; it was simply a metaphor.” “I meant no physical harm to Gattine.” Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett called LePage's remarks a “threat” and said he is “clearly unfit to lead our state.” Interestingly, LePage is an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump, who was slammed after  suggesting someone assassinate Hillary Clinton . Here's the voicemail in question:

Omran Daqneesh: Photo of Aleppo Boy Stuns World

It seems not a day goes by that we don't hear stories of escalating casualty counts in some overseas conflict. Often they take place in cities that most Americans couldn't locate on a world map. Just as frequently, these stories come toward the end of a nightly news broadcast, buried by more trending topics such as the Rio Olympics or a presidential candidate's latest gaffe. We're not saying that a caring, compassionate person can't also take an interest in the less consequential or more entertaining news items of the day. But we are saying that when a powerful image that makes the distantly political intensely personal, it's important to take notice. Omran Daqneesh is a five-year-old boy living in war-torn Syria. A photo of his stunned, bloodied face following an air strike in his native Aleppo has gone viral today. Like Alan Kurdi, the toddler who drowned in the Mediterranean Sea while fleeing Syria with his family last year, Omran has become a potent reminder of the immense human toll of modern warfare. For some, the photo is a vivid illustration of the urgency of resolving the Syrian refugee crisis in a fashion that will save as many civilian lives as possible. For others, it's simply confirmation that unimaginable horrors befall the world's most innocent humans on a daily basis. Regardless of one's personal politics, it's impossible to not be affected by the photo of Omran. The images and video of Omran show him moments after he was pulled from the rubble of a building that was decimated in an attack orchestrated by either Russia or the government of Syria. It's unclear if the boy has any surviving family members. Many of the images of Omran were shared with the international media via the Syrian American Medical Society. You can donate to the aid organization here .
