Maine Governor Denies Being Racist … in Profane Homophobic Voicemail

Maine Gov. Paul LePage left a profane voicemail for a state lawmaker asking him to “prove that I'm a racist” after accusations to that effect. LePage, a Republican, left the voicemail for Democratic State Rep. Drew Gattine on Thursday, according to the Portland Press Herald. The uncensored audio (below) contains several explicit phrases. A bombastic politician and one who does not mince words, the 67-year-old is a frequent target of criticism and magnet for controversy. Earlier this week, LePage doubled down on comments he has made in the past about the racial background of drug dealers in Maine. He infamously said that “90-plus percent … are black and Hispanic people” in remarks that went viral and caused a media firestorm.  Subsequently, Gattine was identified by local media as having called LePage racist, though for his part, Gattine denies having doing so. In any case, LePage let him have it on his voicemail … “Mr. Gattine, this is Gov. Paul Richard LePage,” he says. “I would like to talk to you about your comments about my being a racist, you (expletive).” “I want to talk to you. I want you to prove that I'm a racist. I've spent my life helping black people and you little (expletive), socialist (expletive).” “You … I need you to … just friggin' … I want you to record this and make it public because I am after you. Thank you.” Be careful what you wish for? LePage apologized for the voicemail Friday, but said being labeled a racist is “the absolute worst, most vile thing you can call a person.” “I didn't know Drew Gattine from a hole in the wall until yesterday,” LePage said, and the accusation “made me enormously angry.” “When a TV reporter asked me for my reaction about Gattine calling me a racist … I called Gattine and used the worst word I could think of.” “I apologize for that to the people of Maine, but I make no apology for trying to end the drug epidemic that is ravaging our state.” On Thursday, the governor reportedly took credit for leaving the voicemail, and said he would like to challenge Gattine to a duel. “When a snot-nosed little guy from Westbrook calls me a racist, now I'd like him to come up here because, tell you right now, I wish it were 1825.” “And we would have a duel, that's how angry I am, and I would not put my gun in the air, I guarantee you, I would not be (Alexander) Hamilton.” “I would point it right between his eyes.” “[Gattine] is a snot-nosed little runt and he has not done a damn thing since he's been in this Legislature to help move the state forward.” Friday, LePage walked back the idea of shooting his political rival, saying that “Obviously, it is illegal today; it was simply a metaphor.” “I meant no physical harm to Gattine.” Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett called LePage's remarks a “threat” and said he is “clearly unfit to lead our state.” Interestingly, LePage is an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump, who was slammed after  suggesting someone assassinate Hillary Clinton . Rick Perry: Indicted For Abuse of Power, Coercion of Public Servant

A grand jury indicted Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Friday for abusing the powers of his office, but the longest-serving governor in state history denies any wrongdoing. Perry allegedly abused the powers of the governor’s office by carrying out a threat to veto funding for state prosecutors investigating public corruption. He promised publicly to nix $7.5 million in funding over two years for the public integrity unit run by the office of Travis County D.A. Rosemary Lehmberg. This threat took place after Lehmberg, a Democrat, was convicted of drunken driving last year, but refused Perry’s calls to resign from her position. No one disputes that Perry is allowed to veto measures approved by the Legislature, as he did in following through on his promise to axe the funds. By using public pressure to boast that he would do so as a means of trying to Lehmberg to quit, however, the grand jury felt he broke the law. Perry, 64, and his legal team adamantly disagree. Mary Anne Wiley, Perry’s general counsel, predicted he will be cleared of the charges against him, and thinks the exercise is largely a political stunt. “The veto in question was made in accordance with the veto authority afforded to every governor under the Texas Constitution,” said Perry’s counsel. David L. Botsford, Perry’s defense attorney, said he was outraged by what he called “political abuse of the court system” with “no legal basis.” Lehmberg, and the grand jury that indicted Perry, are based in Austin, which is heavily Democratic, in contrast to most of the rest of conservative Texas. Abuse of official capacity is a first-degree felony with potential punishments of 5-99 years in prison. Coercion of a public servant carries 2-10 years. In office since 2000, Perry isn’t seeking re-election in November as he readies for what many believe will be second run for the White House in 2016. When he ran for president in 2012, Perry plummeted from brief front-runner for the Republican nomination to national punchline after a series of gaffes. None greater than his infamous “oops” moment: Rick Perry Photos & Clips 1. Rick Perry Stumbles in Debate Rick Perry’s campaign for president is probably done for after this almost comically bad performance in last night’s debate. OOPS.

SMH: White Colorado Senator Says Blacks Are In Poverty Because They Eat Too Much Fried Chicken

Chicken makes you poor apparently… Colorado Senator Says Blacks Are Poor Because They Eat Chicken Via NewsOne reports: Colorado state Senator Vicki Marble, R-Fort Collins, has the cure for poverty in the Black community: Stop eating all that chicken! Yep, Marble said, according to the Denver Post. “When you look at life expectancy, there are problems in the black race,” Marble said during a meeting of the legislature’s Economic Opportunity Poverty Reduction Task Force. “Sickle-cell anemia is something that comes up. Diabetes is something that’s prevalent in the genetic makeup, and you just can’t help it. Although I’ve got to say, I’ve never had better barbecue and better chicken and ate better in my life than when you go down South and you, I mean, I love it. Everybody loves it.” Marble added that Mexicans, for example, have healthier diets in their homelands but stop when they immigrate to America. “The Mexican diet in Mexico with all of the fresh vegetables, and you go down there and they are much thinner than they are up here. They’ve changed their diet. I’ve read studies on that.” That Marble is a member of the task force is what makes her remarks even more disturbing. The comments offended several legislators on the committee, including Rep. Rhonda Fields of Aurora, who is Black. Listen to the full interview below…

For Discussion: Should Sports Teams With Offensive Names Be Forced To Make A Change???

Are you offended by these logos and team names?? In between discussions over flood protection, redistricting and housing, the North Dakota state legislature will dedicate part of next week’s special session to one particularly heated issue: the nickname of the University of North Dakota sports teams. The legislature is expected to pass — and Republican Gov. Jack Dalrymple is expected to sign — a law allowing for the retirement of the Fighting Sioux nickname in order to prevent NCAA sanctions. The NCAA has said the nickname and school sports logo are offensive. The legislature had passed a law in the spring, signed by Dalrymple, stripping the state Board of Higher Education of the power to repeal the nickname. “[The governor] will urge the legislature to pass a bill that returns that decision back to the state Board of Higher Education,” said Jeff Zent, Dalrymple’s spokesman. State Senate Minority Leader Ryan Taylor (D-Towner) confirmed that the legislature will likely pass the bill in order to avoid NCAA sanctions. UND officials have not yet decided on a new name. The original bill passed as the Board of Higher Education was planning to take away the nickname. UND is now attempting to join the Big Sky Conference, which said it would not accept the school as part of the conference as long as it called itself the Fighting Sioux. The NCAA has asked college athletic programs that have Native American-related nicknames to change the names. The Spirit Lake tribe filed a lawsuit in federal court in North Dakota this week to prevent the changing of the nickname, because they felt they were being discriminated against. Parental Notification Dominates Testimony At Hearing On Teen Health

More here:

Yesterday, the Legislature’s Program Review and Investigations Committee heard significant testimony on parental notification for minors seeking abortions at its public hearing on teen health. What You Need To Know About New FDA Sunscreen Rules The Family Institute of Connecticut played a key role in arranging this first-ever hearing on parental notification. Sen. Michael McLachlan (R-Danbury) testified about parental notification. He observed that Connecticut legislators want parental notification for teen tanning but not for teen abortions. “Connecticut is fifth in the nation for teen abortions. Connecticut’s teen abortion rate is fifty-five percent higher than the national average,” McLachlan stated. “Parental notification crosses the boundary between pro-life and pro-choice… parental notification is a reasonable expectation of this legislature,” he added. Legislators also heard heart-wrenching testimony from the directors of crisis pregnancy centers, who counsel teens considering abortion on a daily basis. 7 Top Tips To Alleviate Leg Cramps “Parental notification is a common-sense protection for Connecticut’s youth,” stated FIC Executive Director Peter Wolfgang. “Over thirty-six states, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania have laws requiring parental involvement in a minor’s decision to have an abortion. If a school nurse can’t administer aspirin to a minor without a parent’s consent, it’s just common sense that the parent should be involved in a child’s decision to undergo a surgical procedure like abortion,” stated Wolfgang. “Currently, Connecticut law deprives teens of the benefit of guardianship when faced with the decision whether to obtain an abortion. It is not a decision that teens should make alone,” he added. “The lack of a parental notification law creates a loophole that is exploited by human traffickers and statutory rapists,” stated Wolfgang. In 2008, a West Hartford man, Adam Gault, was arrested for abducting a 13-year old girl and holding her captive as his sex slave for over a year. In the course of her captivity, Gault impregnated the girl and had her brought to the Planned Parenthood in West Hartford for an abortion. “If Connecticut had a parental notification law, Adam Gault would have been apprehended much sooner,” commented Wolfgang. “Right now, human traffickers and statutory rapists can cover up their crimes by obtaining abortions for their victims. Knowingly or not, Planned Parenthood aids and abets criminals like Adam Gault in covering up their unspeakable offenses,” he added. “Raymond Bechard’s new book, The Berlin Turnpike: A True Story of Human Trafficking in America, has drawn significant attention to the human trafficking of minors in Connecticut. Passing a parental notification law is an important step towards combating this problem and increasing scrutiny on human traffickers,” elaborated Wolfgang. “We also offer a special thanks to Sen. John Kissel (R-Enfield). It was Sen. Kissel who first suggested the idea that led to yesterday’s hearing at FIC’s February 3rd legislative breakfast. It was his good advice that led to FIC’s biggest ever pro-active victory, a public hearing on parental notification,” concluded Wolfgang.
