Rick Perry: Indicted For Abuse of Power, Coercion of Public Servant

A grand jury indicted Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Friday for abusing the powers of his office, but the longest-serving governor in state history denies any wrongdoing. Perry allegedly abused the powers of the governor’s office by carrying out a threat to veto funding for state prosecutors investigating public corruption. He promised publicly to nix $7.5 million in funding over two years for the public integrity unit run by the office of Travis County D.A. Rosemary Lehmberg. This threat took place after Lehmberg, a Democrat, was convicted of drunken driving last year, but refused Perry’s calls to resign from her position. No one disputes that Perry is allowed to veto measures approved by the Legislature, as he did in following through on his promise to axe the funds. By using public pressure to boast that he would do so as a means of trying to Lehmberg to quit, however, the grand jury felt he broke the law. Perry, 64, and his legal team adamantly disagree. Mary Anne Wiley, Perry’s general counsel, predicted he will be cleared of the charges against him, and thinks the exercise is largely a political stunt. “The veto in question was made in accordance with the veto authority afforded to every governor under the Texas Constitution,” said Perry’s counsel. David L. Botsford, Perry’s defense attorney, said he was outraged by what he called “political abuse of the court system” with “no legal basis.” Lehmberg, and the grand jury that indicted Perry, are based in Austin, which is heavily Democratic, in contrast to most of the rest of conservative Texas. Abuse of official capacity is a first-degree felony with potential punishments of 5-99 years in prison. Coercion of a public servant carries 2-10 years. In office since 2000, Perry isn’t seeking re-election in November as he readies for what many believe will be second run for the White House in 2016. When he ran for president in 2012, Perry plummeted from brief front-runner for the Republican nomination to national punchline after a series of gaffes. None greater than his infamous “oops” moment: Rick Perry Photos & Clips 1. Rick Perry Stumbles in Debate Rick Perry’s campaign for president is probably done for after this almost comically bad performance in last night’s debate. OOPS.

Oops: Rick Perry Campaign Goes Down in Flames at GOP Debate

Texas Gov. Rick Perry produced by far the most memorable moment of Wednesday’s Republican presidential debate, and his campaign likely ended in the process. Already characterized as not ready for prime time after several poor debate performances cast serious doubts on his candidacy, Perry hit a new low last night. It’s one thing to have a bad outing … but Perry never has a good one, and in this almost comical clip, he had no idea what he was even talking about on stage: Rick Perry Stumbles in Debate Perry tried to name three federal agencies he would eliminate if he is elected president, but came up with just two: the Commerce and Education Departments. Struggling to come up with #3, Perry received encouragement from one of his rivals, Rep. Ron Paul, who suggested he should actually eliminate five agencies. Someone then suggested that maybe Perry was talking about the Environmental Protection Agency. No, he said that wasn’t the third. But what was it, then? No clue. After an awkward pause, he drew a blank, offering only a simple “Oops.” You wonder why virtual unknown Herman Cain became the Tea Party darling …

Hide Ya Kids! Study Shows 1 In 10 Texas 11-Year-Olds Have Given Up Their Goodies

Hide Ya Kids! Especially if you live in Texas… According to a study out of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston: 1. Almost one in 10 Texas 6th graders have had sex. 2. The percentage of Texas7th and 8th graders who have had sex is 22 and 29 percent respectively. 3. Of high school-aged kids, 32 percent of 9th graders, 41 percent of 10th graders, 53 percent of 11th graders and 62 percent of 12th graders have had sex. 4. Just over one third of the entire public middle and high school population are sexually experienced. 5. Texas students are more likely to report having had sex with four or more partners and are less likely to have used birth control or condoms. 6. Texas students are also significantly less likely to receive education about HIV or AIDS in school. 7. Males are significantly more likely than their counterparts to report having sex for the first time before age 13, having more than four partners and using drugs or alcohol before having sex. The results come from an analysis of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the CDC’s Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey and the University of Texas Prevention Research Center’s All About Youth study. Guess that explains why Rick Perry wanted all the kids to get the HPV vaccine before 6th grade… But seriously, where are these kids’ parents? Source

Pure Comedy: Rick Perry Buys Hundreds Of Florida Voters Breakfast And Still Can’t Beat Herman Cain In “Straw Poll” Vote

These guys… Pizza mogul Herman Cain shocked pundits to win an early test vote in Florida, beating GOP frontrunners Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. Despite Perry buying hundreds of activists breakfasts on the sidelines before heading to Michigan, he came in second with only 15.4 per cent of the vote. Cain, who owns Godfather’s Pizza, captured 37.1 percent of the vote at Saturday’s Presidency 5 straw poll in Orlando, with Texas Governor Rick Perry coming in second with 15.4 percent. Mitt Romney came in third with 14 percent and Rick Santorum followed with 10.88 percent. While all declared candidates were on the ballot, the first-tier candidates did not compete. Perry bought hundreds of activists’ breakfasts on the sidelines before heading to Michigan. Romney and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota both left Florida before the voting began and their campaigns discounted the straw poll’s role in the campaign. Bachmann finished eighth with 1.51 percent in the straw poll. The results were unlikely to shuffle the campaign’s standings. Instead, they were mostly a popularity contest among the delegates selected by local party organisations. But previous straw polls have predicted the Republican nominee. Ronald Reagan won in 1979, George H.W. Bush in 1987 and Kansas Senator Bob Dole in 1995. The Republican Party of Florida, however, has not organized the test vote in recent years. As much as we hope this doesn’t mean Herman Cain is gonna be the Republican Party’s candidate, it does make for a funny Rick Perry story. Source

Larry Flynt Puts Bounty on Rick Perry Sex Scandal

If you’ve had a sexual encounter – gay or straight – with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Larry Flynt wants to hear from you. And will pay BIG BUCKS for proof. Hustler ‘s publisher is targeting the Republican Presidential candidate, offering $1 million for anyone who can show Perry having an illicit sexual liaison. The ad, which Flynt will take out in various newspapers, asks bluntly, “Have you had a gay or straight sexual encounter with Governor Rick Perry?” Hey, you might as well not beat around the bush in this quest. Rick Perry wants to be president. Larry Flynt wants to derail him/make money . A purveyor of all things smut, Flynt is clearly not a fan of Perry, who opposes gay marriage and is regarded as devoutly conservative on social issues. Then again, he’s made similar offers in the past to people coming forward with dirt on Bill Clinton and/or members of Congress in either political party. No word if there’s a similar bounty on Perry’s rival Rick Santorum , or whether it would involve a bonus if it involves “santorum” as Google defines it. Seriously, Google Rick Santorum. Larry Flynt would be proud.
