Omran Daqneesh: Photo of Aleppo Boy Stuns World

It seems not a day goes by that we don't hear stories of escalating casualty counts in some overseas conflict. Often they take place in cities that most Americans couldn't locate on a world map. Just as frequently, these stories come toward the end of a nightly news broadcast, buried by more trending topics such as the Rio Olympics or a presidential candidate's latest gaffe. We're not saying that a caring, compassionate person can't also take an interest in the less consequential or more entertaining news items of the day. But we are saying that when a powerful image that makes the distantly political intensely personal, it's important to take notice. Omran Daqneesh is a five-year-old boy living in war-torn Syria. A photo of his stunned, bloodied face following an air strike in his native Aleppo has gone viral today. Like Alan Kurdi, the toddler who drowned in the Mediterranean Sea while fleeing Syria with his family last year, Omran has become a potent reminder of the immense human toll of modern warfare. For some, the photo is a vivid illustration of the urgency of resolving the Syrian refugee crisis in a fashion that will save as many civilian lives as possible. For others, it's simply confirmation that unimaginable horrors befall the world's most innocent humans on a daily basis. Regardless of one's personal politics, it's impossible to not be affected by the photo of Omran. The images and video of Omran show him moments after he was pulled from the rubble of a building that was decimated in an attack orchestrated by either Russia or the government of Syria. It's unclear if the boy has any surviving family members. Many of the images of Omran were shared with the international media via the Syrian American Medical Society. Cat Sees Donald Trump on Screen, Flees in Terror

Cats are not dolphins. Nor are they dogs. We mean no offense to these creatures, but they simply aren't known as the smartest animals in the animal kingdom. But the cat featured in the following video takes one look at Donald Trump and is keen enough to do what every voter in America ought to do: Run away in fear. The footage was filmed in April, but it has first gone viral now. And for good reason: It's hilarious! Is the cat scared because Trump may have called for Hillary Clinton to be killed ? Is the cat scared because Trump willfully accepted a Purple Heart on stage , despite having avoided combat back in the day? Because he seemingly hates babies ? It's hard to say. There are any number of reasons why a person, or an animal, should turn in the opposite direction any time Trump is around. If only several million people in America reacted to Trump in this same fashion, huh? Watch the hilarious video now:

12-Year Old Girl Comes Under Fire for Hunting Photos

Aryanna Gourdin is 12 years old. But she isn’t into Frozen or softball or Pretty Little Liars or anything like that. Well, she may be into those things, we don’t want to presume. But Aryanna Gourdin has become a source of heated debate online because she’s most definitely into hunting. Gourdin and her father, Eli, recently took a trip from Utah to South Africa, with Aryanna excitedly sharing a photo on her Facebook page of her sitting on top of a dead zebra. She’s holding a bow and arrow and she has written the following as a caption: “One of my dream hunts for sure.” Should a 12-year old really be out hunting for big game? Gourdin sees nothing wrong with it. “It’s something I cherish and enjoy and I want other people to see what I experienced,” she said in an interview with Good Morning America. This father-daughter trip was one of several the pair have taken over the past five years, but her Facebook postings have turned Gourdin into a topic of heated discussion. One recent photo received over 73,000 comments, with some users are calling Aryanna “sick” and an “animal hater.” In a post on Tuesday, Gourdin did acknowledge the uproar. “My last profile picture was very offensive to others and I have learned my lesson with that pose, [sic] I apologize.” But Gourdin’s father doesn’t want his daughter saying she’s sorry for having a hobby. Or, on a grander scale, he doesn’t want her saying she’s sorry for who she is. “We’re proud to be hunters and we’ll never apologize for being a hunter,” Eli told GMA. Eli also wants to clear up misunderstandings about hunting: the giraffe he and his daughter killed? The one she’s posing with above? It was offered to them for a kill by the farm they were visiting. “They actually had an older giraffe that was eating up valuable resources other giraffes need to survive,” he said. He also said that the meat from the animals they’ve killed was donated to a local village and will feed 800 orphans over the next month. Despite the controversy, Aryanna said she doesn’t plan to give up one of her favorite activities. “I would never back down from hunting,” she says. “I am a hunter and no matter what people say to me, I’m never going to stop.” This is merely the latest in a long line of viral hunting controversies. Remember Walter Palmer? The dentist who reached a level of Internet infamy when he killed a lion named Cecil ? Or Kendall Jones, the college student who also liked to post photos of her kills online? Facebook actually deleted a number of these images , stirring a major controversy in July of 2014. What do you think of a 12-year old hunting? Larry Wilmore Reacts to The Nightly Show Cancelation

Larry Wilmore has once again commented on something making news. Only this time, Larry Wilmore himself in the person making news. On Tuesday afternoon, Comedy Central pulled the plug on Wilmore’s The Nightly Show after about a year-and-a-half on the air. It followed The Daily Show at 11:30 p.m. and never seemed to gained any real traction with viewers. Debuting in January 2015, The Nightly Show became the first U.S. late-night program to be hosted by an African-American, as Wilmore used the platform to showcase a number of diverse perspectives. Not a lot of people tuned in, however. Even with the November election looming, one involving two polarizing candidates, The Nightly Show only garnered a 0.2 rating in the key 18-49 demographic. Granted, ratings for The Daily Show has fallen quite a bit since Jon Stewart left, as well, creating a less popular lead-in for Wilmore. This is what Comedy Central President Kent Alterman said upon pulling The Nightly Show plug: “We just didn’t feel like we had enough traction to sign up for another year. It wasn’t about the election; it’s about another year of the show. “Sadly, we’ve been hoping against hope that it would start to resonate in any of those quarters and we just weren’t seeing evidence of it. “As much as we like Larry and the uniqueness of the show and the voices that are on the show – not just in terms of ratings – it hasn’t resonated in terms of our fans engaging with show with consuming or sharing content or having a dialogue about it on social platforms.” That is mostly true. You can’t argue with numbers or ratings. But it’s likely also a sad state of television these days that a series can’t find traction because it isn’t going after the “viral” moments. Wilmore wasn’t concerned with short segments that could be replayed for days on YouTube; he was focused on generating legitimate discussion about important issues. In response to the cancelation, Wilmore could not hide his disappointment. “I’m really grateful to Comedy Central, [executive producer] Jon Stewart, and our fans to have had this opportunity,” Wilmore said in a statement. “But I’m also saddened and surprised we won’t be covering this crazy election, or ‘The Unblackening’ as we’ve coined it. “And keeping it 100, I guess I hadn’t counted on ‘The Unblackening’ happening to my time slot as well.” Comedy Central will air Chris Hardwick’s game show @midnight in The Nightly Show’s time slot while the network seeks a permanent replacement. “We’re totally open to women and in whatever form diversity would come,” Alterman said about said replacement. “We’re open to it for sure.” Are you sad to see Wilmore go? And who would you want to see take over a show at 11:30 on Comedy Central?

Sofia Richie and Justin Bieber Make It Official!

Sofia Richie and Justin Bieber are officially, completely, 100% for real a couple. If you put a lot of stock in the world of Instagram, that is. A few days after the singer was first spotted getting his flirt on with the 17-year old sister of Nicole Richie, Bieber and Sofia have posed together on Instagram. Many, many times. Oh, yes. Like we said: these two are now official. Instagram official ! We’re not joking. This is a big deal, going public with their status in such a way that Bieber’s millions and millions of followers must now bear witness to their PDA. The artist is off in Tokyo at the moment, but he’s been joined there by his apparent new girlfriend. Neither Bieber nor Richie has commented on their relationship, at least not in the traditional sense of releasing any kind of statement. But it’s pretty easy to read between the romantic lines when checking out their social media feeds. In the following picture, for instance, Bieber is only wearing underwear while seemingly standing in a hotel room. There’s Richie in the foreground, doing a certain dance that Justin references in the caption. “Dab on em,” he captioned the black and white snapshot. An hour after this image went viral on Friday, the artist and his new squeeze hopped into the backseat of a car, where they posed for another selfie together (way above). In the picture, Bieber slightly smirks and Richie pouts her lips in a seductive manner. Still not convinced this is a real relationship? What about the following photo, which Richie shared on her Instagram account and which features the pair in each other’s arms? It also features a pair of heart emojis as the caption… Bieber and Richie are in Japan for a couple of stops on the former’s Purpose World Tour. But this caption addresses the singer’s fans and actually issues a threat due to the trash they’ve been talking online to Richie. “I’m gonna make my Instagram private if you guys don’t stop the hate this is getting out of hand,” Bieber wrote, adding: “if you guys are really fans you wouldn’t be so mean to people that I like.” So there you have it. Bieber is admirably sticking up for his new girlfriend, who is sadly receiving the same sort of harassment that past Justin Bieber girlfriends have suffered through. The guy is right, of course. If he’s happy and if you’re a fan of his… isn’t that what you want? Unless you truly believed that YOU would end up dating Justin Bieber, why give grief to someone that puts a smile on his face?

Kenny Baker Dies; Actor Behind R2-D2 was 81

Kenny Baker, a British actor you may not recognize but whose work you know VERY well, died on Saturday after battling a lengthy illness. He was 81 years old. Standing at just 3 feet and 8 inches tall, Baker starred in six Star Wars films as the iconic character of R2-D2. The actor’s niece, Abigail Shield, confirmed this sad news to The Guardian, paying tribute to her relative as follows: “It was expected, but it’s sad nonetheless. He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we’ll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. “We’re all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime.” Baker rose to fame in 1977 when he first appeared on screen as this beloved robot. He then returned for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as the three Star Wars prequels from 1999 to 2005. Baker also has roles in a number of other popular films in the 1980s, including The Elephant Man, Time Bandits and Flash Gordon. “When he was a child, he was told that he probably wouldn’t survive through puberty. Being a little person in those times, they didn’t have a very good life expectancy,” Shield told The Guardian on Saturday. “He did extremely well in his life. He was very ill for the last few years, so we had been expecting it. “He had been looked after by one of his nephews, who found him on Saturday morning.” She concluded: “He had problems with his lungs and was often in a wheelchair. He was very poorly for a long time. He was asked to go out to L.A. for the new Star Wars premiere, but he was told he was too ill to travel. “Luckily, he did manage to meet George Lucas again when he came to Manchester.” This news hits just as the first Rogue One trailer went viral toward the end of last week. Little Boy Reacts with Epic Tears to Twins Announcement

Be still my heart. One dad in Brazil recorded his young son watching an ultrasound from his mother's check-up.   According to Mashable , the boy was captivated by the video , until his dad told him that there were two siblings in mom's tummy. “I can see the baby's face,” the kid siad, clearly having no idea what he was looking at. “Can you?” the dad asked. “Yes, I'm seeing it.” Dad called his bluff. “Do you know what it is?” “No.” “Your sibling.” “Is it?” “And they're two.” “Really?” “Really!” “Holy cow, dude,” the boy said before slowly starting to tear up. “What's happening, boy?” the dad asked. Wait for it, because this is friggin' adorably. “I'm touched,” the little guy said through tears. ALL.  THE.  FEELS. Recording reactions to moments like these are the antidote to the Hot Mess Express train humanity is forced to ride on these days.   For every video of Donald Trump either threatening assassination against his opponent or making fun of a disabled journalist, there are little moments like this one that make us smile. The smiles don't stop there.  Remember the little girl who didn't want her brother to grow up, so she bawled her eyes out in protest? And then there was “Charlie Bit My Finger,” which instantly became a viral hit. I hope the little Brazilian boy gets everything in life his little heart hopes for, because he reaction to having not one, but two younger siblings was nothing sort of beautiful. What a lovely way to respond to becoming a big brother.  He's psyched about his growing family, and there is no way you can fake those kind of tears. Good luck to you, little boy, and your growing family. Now if you'll excuse us, we're going to have ourselves a good cry.
