Kanye West And Jay-Z Serve Up ‘H.A.M.’

First Watch the Throne single features a dark beat by Lex Luger. By Hillary Crosley Jay-Z and Kanye Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage As promised, Kanye West and Jay-Z have teamed up to slaughter the game again. On Tuesday (January 11), just a few minutes after midnight, the pair dropped their much-anticipated single “H.A.M.” on Facebook . Produced by Virginia native Lex Luger, the track is the first from ‘Ye and Jay’s forthcoming joint LP, Watch the Throne. “It was all good just a week ago/ N—as feel they selves and now watch the throne drop/ N—as kill they selves,” ‘Ye spits. “What n—as gon’ do, Hov?/ This a new crack on a new stove, I’m in two, though/ True dat, n—as telling me, ‘You back,’ like a n—a ever left up out this bitch, huh?/ And if life’s a bitch, then suck my d—, huh?/ And I bet she f—ed the whole clique, huh?/ By the way, n—a, you should f—ing quit, n—a/ Just forget it/ You talk it, I live it.” As the beat swells into the chorus, featuring Lex’s trademark dark sounds, including an eerie chorus of “oh’s,” West spits, “I’m about to go ham, hard as a muthaf—a, let these n—as know who I am/ I’m about to go ham.” Next, Jay takes the mic. “F— y’all mad at me for?/ Y’all don’t even know what I been through/ I play chicken with a Mack Truck, y’all muthaf—as would’ve been moved,” Jay boasts. “I swam waters with great whites, y’all muthaf—as would’ve been chewed/ I hustle with vultures on the late night, y’all muthaf—as would’ve been fooled.” Continuing his braggadocious lyrics, Hov pierces the ego of his haters by taunting that “n—as ain’t got my lady’s money,” referring to wife Beyonc

‘Empire Strikes Back’ Added To National Film Registry

‘Saturday Night Fever,’ ‘Airplane!’ among other movies recognized by Library of Congress. By Jayson Rodriguez “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” Photo: FOX Thirty years ago, moviegoers were stunned when Darth Vader revealed in “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” that he was Luke Skywalker’s father. On Tuesday (December 28), however, there was no surprise when the venerable sci-fi flick was selected by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Film Registry, according to The Associated Press. The honor recognizes the iconic 1980 movie for being artistically, culturally or historically significant. A copy of the original film will be preserved by the registry at the Packard Campus of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, Virginia, for future generations. “The Empire Strikes Back” was produced by “Star Wars” auteur George Lucas but directed by Irvin Kershner. It was joined by 24 other films; more than 2,500 were nominated. The John Travolta-powered disco vehicle “Saturday Night Fever,” the Watergate drama “All the President’s Men” and Spike Lee’s biopic “Malcolm X” were among the popular titles to make the cut. The films will be added to a library that includes upwards of 550 titles, including Lucas’ “American Graffiti” and the first installment of “Star Wars.” Comedies including “The Pink Panther” and “Airplane!” were also selected by Librarian of Congress James H. Billington, who has picked every film in the registry since its inception in 1989. “Airplane!” is a hilarious spoof of disaster movies that starred Leslie Nielsen, who died less than a month ago at the age of 84. Bradley Manning’s Health is Deteriorating

As Julian Assange emerged from his nine-day imprisonment, there were renewed concerns about the physical and psychological health of Bradley Manning, the former US intelligence analyst suspected of leaking the diplomatic cables at the centre of the storm. Manning, who was arrested seven months ago, is being held at a military base in Virginia and faces a court martial and up to 52 years in prison for his alleged role in copying the cables. His friends and supporters also claim they have been the target of extra-judicial harassment, intimidation and outright bribery by US government agents. According to David House, a computer researcher from Boston who visits Manning twice a month, he is starting to deteriorate. “Over the last few weeks I have noticed a steady decline in his mental and physical wellbeing,” he said. “His prolonged confinement in a solitary holding cell is unquestionably taking its toll on his intellect; his inability to exercise due to [prison] regulations has affected his physical appearance in a manner that suggests physical weakness.” Manning, House added, was no longer the characteristically brilliant man he had been, despite efforts to keep him intellectually engaged. He also disputed the authorities' claims that Manning was being kept in solitary for his own good. “I initially believed that his time in solitary confinement was a decision made in the interests of his safety,” he said. “As time passed and his suicide watch was lifted, to no effect, it became clear that his time in solitary – and his lack of a pillow, sheets, the freedom to exercise, or the ability to view televised current events – were enacted as a means of punishment rather than a means of safety.” More at the link… added by: jubal

Train Enjoy ‘Intense’ MTV World Stage Performance

Band’s set, filmed in London, premieres Friday on Palladia at 9 p.m. ET. By James Montgomery Train’s Pat Monahan Photo: MTV News Thanks to the success of hits like “Meet Virginia,” “Drops of Jupiter” and — especially — “Hey Soul Sister,” Train are the kind of band that operate in only one way: globally. They are, after all, one of the most popular radio acts on the planet ( “Soul Sister” went to #1 in 16 different countries, was the most-downloaded song of 2010 in the U.S., and the year’s most-played song in, of all places, Australia), which is why they’re the perfect band to be showcased on MTV’s World Stage, a concert series that features the biggest acts on Earth. On Friday at 9 p.m. ET on Palladia, fans who weren’t lucky enough to score tickets to London’s Shepherds Bush Empire theater — where Train filmed their World Stage performance back in October — will finally be able to catch the band in all their globe-spanning glory. Though the idea of filming a show for the entire world seems like a no-brainer, the guys in Train were hesitant to sign on when first approached by MTV. After all, they’d done the whole “concert film” thing before and, as frontman Pat Monahan put it, the end result was usually less than satisfactory. For everyone involved. “We’ve recorded a lot of shows in the past, with cameras … and usually it’s been kind of a bummer, because it sets a weird vibe right off the bat, when there’s six cameras and people can’t see past [them],” he explained. “But this one was different. They set it up really nicely and all the fans that were in there were psyched to be a part of it, and we were psyched to be a part of it. … The people of London were amazing, and once they found out they were going to be part of a film, it was even more intense. It was a great night for us.” The show also gave Train an opportunity to unveil their brand-new, Coca-Cola-approved Christmas song, “Shake Up Christmas.” The London audience was the first anywhere to hear the tune, and even though it was new — and being played in October — the response was one Train won’t forget any time soon. And, luckily, the cameras were there to capture the moment. “[That was] the first time anyone heard it, at Shepherd’s Bush in London, and it was cool, because the end chorus is just ‘Ho Ho Ho,’ and so I just asked them to sing it once, and they sang it every single time,” Monahan smiled. “And that’s why it felt so big, because they just wanted to be a part of it. We feel honored to be able to go to the U.K. or Europe or anywhere in the world, and get people to care at all. That was the first time they heard it, and they acted like it had been on the radio for months.” “MTV World Stage: Train” premieres Friday, December 17, at 9 p.m. ET on Palladia. Dutch Anti-Piracy Group, With MPAA’s Help, Able To Grab 29 US-Hosted Domains… With No Trial Or Notice

Now that the US government appears to be endorsing the idea of simply seizing domain names without notice( http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20101128/15302012021/who-needs-coica-when-homel… ) to the proprietors of those domains, it appears that others are doing the same as well. TorrentFreak reports that the Dutch anti-piracy group, BREIN, with help from the MPAA, has been able to get 29 different domain names — all hosted in the US — to point to BREIN's homepage instead( http://torrentfreak.com/mpaa-shuts-down-29-bittorrent-and-nzb-sites-101215/ ). The owners of those domains were apparently given no notice and no recourse. It sounds like most of the sites did not host any content but linked to potentially infringing content. Whether or not you believe that simply linking to potentially infringing content should be against the law, we're seeing yet another example of the simple lack of due process and how this may impact other areas. If BREIN can get US domains shut down, what's to stop other countries from doing the same thing? China doesn't like reporting by an American site about China? What's to stop it from trying to “seize” that domain? Even if we grant the idea that many of these domains were engaged in or encouraging unauthorized copying of works covered by copyright, why should BREIN and the MPAA simply get to shut them down without any sort of trial? http://torrentfreak.com/mpaa-shuts-down-29-bittorrent-and-nzb-sites-101215/ Update: TorrentFreak requested a list of the affected domains from BREIN and received this response from Tim Kuik. “No that would amount to free PR for the sites that intend to continue their unlawful activities at another hosting provider. These are not large sites and we want to keep it that way.” In response to a question about how the sites were taken offline: “The sites were taken down by the hosting provider,” said Kuik. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20101215/11300412292/dutch-anti-piracy-group-wi… added by: toyotabedzrock

Poll: Obama Beats Any Republican in 2012

His party got hammered in the midterm election, he's taking heat for compromising with Republicans on taxes and his approval levels are hovering around 45 percent, but a new survey concludes President Obama's prospects for re-election in 2012 are fairly strong. The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll out Thursday finds while only 42 percent of respondents say they'd probably vote for the president if he runs again, just 39 percent say they'd vote for a Republican. Ten percent say it depends who the GOP opponent is. But when you put a Republican name into the equation, the numbers change — in favor of Obama. The president leads former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 47 to 40 percent. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota trails by 20 points, 47 to 27 percent. The president leads former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin 55 to 33 percent. NBC says that 22 percent spread is “an indication that the former Republican vice presidential nominee remains a polarizing figure who actually wins support for Mr. Obama.” The survey finds that nearly three-quarters of Americans personally like the president, even if they don't agree with his stands on the issues. Democratic pollster Peter Hart tells NBC the White House can see this poll as a pretty good review at the half-way point of his first term. “From my point of view, this poll is anything but a lump of coal in the president's Christmas stocking,” said Hart, who conducted the survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff. “But there is a lot of work to be done.” McInturff concludes Obama “retains very strong numbers with a political core constituency.” Another poll out Thursday gauged Obama's re-election chances in eight swing states, most of which he won in 2008: Montana, Virginia, North Carolina, Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio. The Public Policy Polling survey found the president's chances remain good in each state, with Romney the potential candidate who could put up the best fight for Republicans. added by: TimALoftis

The inhumane conditions of Bradley Manning’s detention

Bradley Manning, the 22-year-old U.S. Army Private accused of leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks, has never been convicted of that crime, nor of any other crime. Despite that, he has been detained at the U.S. Marine brig in Quantico, Virginia for five months — and for two months before that in a military jail in Kuwait — under conditions that constitute cruel and inhumane treatment and, by the standards of many nations, even torture. Interviews with several people directly familiar with the conditions of Manning's detention, ultimately including a Quantico brig official (Lt. Brian Villiard) who confirmed much of what they conveyed, establishes that the accused leaker is subjected to detention conditions likely to create long-term psychological injuries. Since his arrest in May, Manning has been a model detainee, without any episodes of violence or disciplinary problems. He nonetheless was declared from the start to be a “Maximum Custody Detainee,” the highest and most repressive level of military detention, which then became the basis for the series of inhumane measures imposed on him. From the beginning of his detention, Manning has been held in intensive solitary confinement. For 23 out of 24 hours every day — for seven straight months and counting — he sits completely alone in his cell. Even inside his cell, his activities are heavily restricted; he's barred even from exercising and is under constant surveillance to enforce those restrictions. For reasons that appear completely punitive, he's being denied many of the most basic attributes of civilized imprisonment, including even a pillow or sheets for his bed (he is not and never has been on suicide watch). For the one hour per day when he is freed from this isolation, he is barred from accessing any news or current events programs. Lt. Villiard protested that the conditions are not “like jail movies where someone gets thrown into the hole,” but confirmed that he is in solitary confinement, entirely alone in his cell except for the one hour per day he is taken out. In sum, Manning has been subjected for many months without pause to inhumane, personality-erasing, soul-destroying, insanity-inducing conditions of isolation similar to those perfected at America's Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado: all without so much as having been convicted of anything. And as is true of many prisoners subjected to warped treatment of this sort, the brig's medical personnel now administer regular doses of anti-depressants to Manning to prevent his brain from snapping from the effects of this isolation. Just by itself, the type of prolonged solitary confinement to which Manning has been subjected for many months is widely viewed around the world as highly injurious, inhumane, punitive, and arguably even a form of torture. In his widely praised March, 2009 New Yorker article — entitled “Is Long-Term Solitary Confinement Torture?” — the surgeon and journalist Atul Gawande assembled expert opinion and personal anecdotes to demonstrate that, as he put it, “all human beings experience isolation as torture.” By itself, prolonged solitary confinement routinely destroys a person’s mind and drives them into insanity. A March, 2010 article in The Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law explains that “solitary confinement is recognized as difficult to withstand; indeed, psychological stressors such as isolation can be as clinically distressing as physical torture.” Continued at link . . . http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/12/14/manning/index.html added by: pjacobs51
