Hi Hater? Martina Navratilova Doesn’t Believe Serena Williams “Retired” From Wimbledon Doubles Match Becaue Of A Virus

Dang, it’s sounding like people think Serena’s a sore loser. .. Martina Navratilova Says She Doesn’t Believe Serena Williams Had Virus At Wimbledon As time continues to pass without comment from Serena Williams’ camp following her default during her and Venus’ doubles match Tuesday, tennis insiders are questioning the virus used to excuse her strange behavior. According to ESPNW reports: The official cause of Williams’ withdrawal from her second-round doubles match with partner and sister Venus on Tuesday was termed a “viral illness,” but that has been a source of rampant speculation. “I find it distressing,” said Martina Navratilova, a nine-time Wimbledon singles champion (with 20 titles here, including doubles and mixed doubles) and Tennis Channel analyst. “I think virus, whatever they’re saying it was, I don’t think that was it. I think it’s clear that’s not the case. I don’t know what it is, but I hope Serena will be OK. And most of all, I don’t know how she ended up walking onto the court.” Attempts to reach Williams’ agent, Jill Smoller, were unsuccessful. The Williams sisters defaulted their match against Kristina Barrois and Stefanie Voegele after four double faults by Serena, who, unsteady on her feet, was unable to bounce, toss or serve the ball. After a few words with the umpire, who came off his chair to talk, she played one more point and then retired. She took her sister’s hand, sat down and was examined by medical personnel. The start of the match had also been delayed by 14 minutes while a tournament doctor checked on her. Barrois said she was able to tell immediately that something was wrong. “Barrois said after the first hit in warm-up, [Williams] wasn’t able to hit the ball over the net,” ESPN analyst and former player Pam Shriver said of an interview Wednesday morning. “I asked her what they were being told, and she said they were just told Serena was being evaluated.” Barrois and Voegele turned down interview requests by American reporters after their third-round loss Wednesday because they did not want to answer questions about Williams. On Wednesday, the WTA reported that the medical staff from Wimbledon and the WTA checked on Serena in the morning at the home where she is staying and that “she is resting there and feeling slightly better.” “It’s the most inexplicable thing of all that she was clearly in no state to play a match and that with all the people around her, that they didn’t stop her from getting on the court,” Navratilova said. She has a point there. Why would Serena be allowed to play at all if she had a virus and couldn’t even hit a ball over the net? To further add to the confusion, Serena’s coach said he had not seen her in the days before the match. Williams’ coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, told reporters he had not seen Serena in two days. Williams, a five-time singles champion here and the tournament’s top seed, was upset Saturday in the third round of singles by No. 25 Alize Cornet. “I’ve never seen anything like it and hopefully never will again,” Navratilova said. “Everybody was put in such a difficult position, including the WTA. It’s not right. It defies logic on so many fronts. The coach said he hadn’t seen her for two days. He didn’t know anything. How can you be a coach and not know anything? That’s wrong. And Venus was just kind of there. You don’t know what’s going on, but virus was not it, that much is clear.” Observers, including friends and family, were reported as saying that Williams was distressed after the singles loss. Navratilova, who was No. 1 in the world for a total of 332 weeks in singles and a record 237 weeks in doubles, agreed it was not uncommon for a top player to want to be alone after a big loss. “[But] why would it take two days?” she said. “Either you go home or default. I would expect a default before you play. But once you step onto the court, you’re a professional tennis player, you’ve got to be ready to play. No matter what is ailing you or no matter if you did anything to get you in that state or you’re sick or whatever, you don’t step on the court. You don’t step on the court no matter what.” SMH. Do you think Martina Navratilova is being a hater, or is she just keeping it real?

Gender Matters: HIV Positive Black Men Likely To Receive Lower Levels Of Care Than HIV Positive Black Women

HIV Positive Black Women Receive More Care Than Men HIV/AIDS is a MAJOR issue in the black community …. According to News One: HIV is a crisis in African-American communities that continues to threaten the health and well-being of Black men and women across the United States. Further, the community faces the most severe burden of HIV and AIDS than any racial/ethnic group in the nation. As a grim reminder of these unvarnished facts, Feb. 7 marks the observance of the 14th annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day designed to remind Americans that HIV remains a critical public health concern in African-American communities more than thirty years after the first AIDS cases were identified. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new data released Thursday showing that additional efforts are needed to ensure that individuals who are infected with HIV receive the care and treatment they need. “The day provides an important opportunity to talk about testing in our community,” Dr. Donna Hubbard McCree, associate director for health equity at the division of HIV/AIDS Prevention at the CDC told NewsOne. “And also it’s a community mobilization initiative. It’s really about getting the message out. ‘I am my brother or sister’s keeper’ was the original theme, but the real specific focal points are around getting educated, tested and getting treatment. It’s a way to keep the conversation about HIV and the affect that it’s having in African-American communities on the table.” These are the facts: African Americans now bear the greatest burden of HIV in the United States, accounting for nearly half of the more than 1.1 million Americans living with HIV and nearly half of those who have died with AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic, the CDC says. Among African Americans, just as in other racial and ethnic groups, gay and bisexual men, especially young men, are the most impacted population, accounting for the majority of new infections. African-American women also bear a large, disproportionate burden, with almost two-thirds of new infections in 2010 among women occurring among Black women. The harsh numbers signal that improvements need to be made not only in diagnosing individuals with HIV, but also ensuring they are engaged in care and treated effectively to keep their virus under control. Published in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the new data examines the percentage of African Americans diagnosed with HIV infection who were receiving care and treatment in 2010. Among Blacks who had been diagnosed with HIV, 75 percent were linked to care, 48 percent stayed in care, 46 percent were prescribed antiretroviral therapy, and 35 percent achieved viral suppression (i.e., the virus is under control at a level that helps keep people healthy and reduces the risk of transmitting the virus to others), the report shows. Black males had lower levels of care and viral suppression than Black females, and those who were younger (under the age of 25) had lower levels than those who were older. “Our data tells us that treatment can help people with HIV live longer, healthier lives and helps prevent the transmission of the virus to others,” McCree said. “We’re excited about these data because it gives us a snapshot around what’s going on around treatment and care within African-American communities. And given the disproportionate rates of HIV within African-American communities, it’s critical that we make individuals aware of their status so they can get their virus under control.” Discuss…

Madonna Badger Engaged: Connecticut Mom to Remarry Two Years After Fatal Fire

Two years ago, Madonna Bagder endured the worst Christmas ever when her three young daughters and parents died in her Connecticut home’s fire. In the aftermath, a despondent Badger repeatedly threatened to kill herself, barely coping in a haze of grief and despair. But she eventually found love again. The 49-year-old ad-agency owner is engaged to be married. “It’s never going to be easy. The pain is just so huge that sometimes it feels like a prison cell,” she writes in a moving first-person essay in Vogue . “But trying really hard to not feel sorry for myself makes me feel good. Basically, I go to wherever the light is, because anything else is darkness.” Supporting her in this daily struggle is fiancée Bill Duke, a longtime friend and real-estate broker who was by her side the day her world burned away. They plan to spend Christmas volunteering to help children. Last year, Madonna Badger spent her first holiday season after the fire in Thailand, volunteering at an orphanage for girls at the invitation of a friend. She brought the children toys that belonged to her kids. “Thirty or so of them came and stood in front of me and prayed for me in Thai. I closed my eyes, and when I opened them we were all crying,” she said. “When I looked into the girls’ faces, I saw my children.” “It broke me open in a way I still can’t fully explain. If these little girls were living with joy and happiness, I realized, how could I possibly feel sorry for myself?” Today, Badger has returned to her agency in New York and attempts to live each day to the fullest, both for herself and the memory of her family. “What better way to honor their lives than to not give up?” she writes. “I chose this life. I wanted to have these babies, and I wanted to have this company.” “I wanted my girls – and my [mother and father] – to look at me and see a strong, smart businesswoman with a heart full of love for them.”

Sarah Silverman Appears on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Returns Ex-Boyfriend’s Stuff

Sarah Silverman was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, appearing to promote her new stand-up special… and also to give back a bunch of Kimmel’s stuff, seeing as these two dated for five years until breaking up in 2008. It was a tad awkward (“It’s like I never left, only you’re married!” Silverman quipped upon sitting down), but mostly just plain awesome. Silverman brought along with her a box that contained Kimmel’s old toothbrush, his Palm Treo charger, some very large jeans and a a collage out of all the heads she cut out of their pictures together. Oh, and the former couple’s son. Silverman brought along the former couple’s son as well. See what we mean here: Sarah Silverman Returns Jimmy Kimmel’s Stuff Nothing will ever top I’m F-cking Matt Damon , but this was pretty funny stuff.

Wait… What?!!? Televangelist Pat Robertson Says Gays Cut Straight People To Spread HIV/AIDS

Jesus take the wheel … PLEASE! Pat Robertson Says All Gay People Will Cut You To Give You AIDS 700 Club host Pat Robertson launched more anti-LGBT paranoia on Tuesday, accusing the LGBT community of imposing “draconian” censorship laws and willfully transmitting the AIDS virus. Via Raw Story reports: “You know what they do in San Francisco,” Robertson told co-host Terry Meeuwsen “Some in the gay community there, they want to get people so if they got the stuff they’ll have a ring, you shake hands, and the ring’s got a little thing where you cut your finger. Really. It’s that kind of vicious stuff, which would be the equivalent of murder.” Right Wing Watch, which posted video of the statement on YouTube, reported that the remark was apparently edited out by the Christian Broadcast Network before it posted Tuesday’s full episode online. In answering a viewer’s question whether her church should have informed her she was providing driving services for an AIDS patient to attend mass, Robertson also said there were now “draconian laws on the books” forbidding even discussing the disease. “You can tell somebody you had a heart attack, you can tell them they’ve got high blood pressure,” he lamented. “But you can’t tell anybody you’ve got AIDS.” At one point, Meeuwsen attempted to reassure the viewer whose question inspired Robertson’s ramblings, saying she was doing a good thing by helping the man get to church. “I have known many people with AIDS and have never felt fearful of [contracting the virus],” she told Robertson.

Did You Know?? Philly Hospital Opens Up Emergency Tent Camp For Overwhelming Flu Outbreaks!

It’s for the safety of the hospital staff… Via NBC News : It’s the most miserable time of the year for many people in the area. Flu season is in full effect and this one in particular is shaping up to be more extreme than usual. The State Department of Health reports that four Pennsylvanians have already died of complications from the influenza virus. In response to the early start of flu season, the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest had to open an emergency space to care for the increased number of people with flu-like symptoms…after four people died of complications from the virus. The tent is 1,100 square feet and is equipped to treat six patients at a time with three medical staff. Access to a doctor is available inside the emergency room. The tent is only for those with mild flu symptoms while those who have severe cases, need intravenous drips, or have underlying health conditions are taken into the hospital. The flu triage tent began operating at 11am on Tuesday and closes at 11pm each night. The hospital tells NBC10′s Katy Zachry why the tent was erected. “If we can remove them from the main ED and put them in an environment where everyone is masked and everyone can be protected, it’s safer for them and certainly safer for the staff,” said Terry Burger, hospital director of infection control. Officials believe this year will be a particularly bad outbreak of the flu virus – known as H3N2 – and treating patients in isolation is the best way of keeping cases at bay. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that 200,000 people across the country have been hospitalized with this year’s strain so far. Dozens of states including Pennsylvania and New Jersey have reported high outbreaks. Across the U.S., 19 children have so far died from the flu. The elderly, the very young and those with previous health conditions are most at risk. The CDC recommends that individuals get a flu shot which prevents against getting the virus in 90 per cent of cases. Do you get a flu shot every year? Images via twitter
