‘Gnomeo And Juliet’ Stars Talk ‘Overacting’ For Animated Flick

‘You have to emanate every kind of sound you can ever muster up,’ Emily Blunt tells MTV News. By Kara Warner James McAvoy and Emily Blunt Photo: MTV News From the outside looking in, the world of voice acting holds an allure that seems glamorous in a different way than traditional acting. There’s no wardrobe to fit, no hair and makeup to arrange, no far-off location to travel to, and so forth. All an actor has to do is show up and speak into a microphone. According to the lead voices behind “Gnomeo and Juliet” (an animated take on Shakespeare’s classic), James McAvoy and Emily Blunt, there are indeed a few benefits. But it’s definitely not as basic as some might think. MTV News recently spoke to Blunt and McAvoy, who told us effective voice work requires a few tricks. “I feel like you have to overact the entire time because you don’t realize how flat your voice sounds when it’s faceless and expressionless,” Blunt said. “So you actually have to over-enunciate and really leap around to add some kind of liveliness to the way you speak,” she explained. “It was interesting. We were told often to smile while we were talking because it actually lightens your voice up. It was interesting.” McAvoy added that you can actually hear the smile in the voice. “It was quite interesting. Even when the character is not supposed to be smiling, they’d like to hear the smile,” he said. Blunt also revealed that a few of her scenes were a bit embarrassing because she had to run in place in order to act out certain action sequences. “They need reactions from you falling on something or swinging or grabbing a hold of something,” she explained. “So that’s when you have to emanate every kind of sound you can ever muster up. It’s very strange.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Gnomeo and Juliet.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Justin Bieber Tells Guys: ‘Take Your Girl’ To See ‘Never Say Never’

‘Even if you don’t like my music or anything, just go,’ pop star advises. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Justin Bieber in “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” Photo: Paramount Pictures There’s no denying that Justin Bieber has a mostly female fanbase, so there are probably swarms of teen girls cleaning off their purple 3-D glasses to check out “Never Say Never” this weekend. For those guys who think they have too much testosterone flowing through their veins to check out the film, the Biebs has a message for you. “If I could say anything [to guys who think the movie is only for girls], I would say, like, just give it a chance,” he told MTV News. “It’s just a good movie. It has a good story line.”

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Premieres

Gaga channels ’90s dance music on new track celebrating individuality. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Andy Sheppard/ Redferns/ Getty Images Fun, empowering and over-the-top. Those are the first adjectives that come to mind upon hearing Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” Between Gaga’s empowering lyrics and the music’s heavy club influences, the song is set to appease her fans and pop lovers everywhere who had no idea what Gaga had up her meat sleeves for this highly anticipated single, which debuted early Friday morning (February 11). At first listen, it sounds a lot like a ’90s club anthem that could have been pulled right out Madonna’s “Vogue” period, complete with rhythmic spoken-word parts. But upon a closer listen, Gaga’s distinct voice makes the song all hers. “It doesn’t matter if you love him or capital H-I-M,” she says on loop at the song’s beginning, “because you were born this way, baby.” As synths crash into a beat, Gaga belts out the song’s first verse, “My mama told me when I was young/ We are all born superstars.” She then quickly moves into the chorus, and it’s clear this song is meant to be heard in a big space. It’s fast and hard-hitting. Gaga sings/speaks in the middle of the song: “Don’t be a drag, be a queen/ Whether you’re broke or evergreen/ You’re black, white, beige, chola descent/ You’re Lebanese, You’re Orient/ Whether life’s disabilities/ Left you outcast, bullied or teased/ Rejoice and love yourself today/ ‘Cause baby you we’re born this way/ No matter gay, straight, or bi/ Lesbian, transgendered life/ I’m on the right track baby/ I was born to survive/ No matter black, white or beige/ Chola or Orient made/ I’m on the right track baby/ I was born to be brave.” The music fades out momentarily as Gaga sings a cappella before a synthy organ comes back in and she closes out the song, her voice clear and strong. The song is part gospel for her little monsters (particularly the ones who feel persecuted for their sexuality or other differences) and part funky dance tune that anyone could relate to. The song was written and co-produced by Gaga. Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow also got co-production credits on the track, which will appear on her May album of the same name. Marsha Ambrosius Is Glad ‘Far Away’ Video ‘Got People Talking’

‘I’m glad it’s got people talking,’ songstress tells MTV News of same-sex romance in anti-bullying clip. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas Marsha Ambrosius Photo: MTV News Marsha Ambrosius ‘ video for “Far Away” portrays the ill-fated romance between two passionate lovers — a well-worn arc that has powered narratives from Shakespearean literature to sunny rom-coms. Yet Ambrosius’ visual is distinctly of the moment because it touches on an array of hot-button topics, including bullying, suicide and gay rights. In the clip, which premiered in January, Ambrosius hangs out with a handsome guy who can charm kids and grown men alike. But when the same guy openly holds hands in the park with his male lover, the kids’ mom won’t let her children go near him, and the once jovial fellas in the park advance on him. Ambrosius’ formerly carefree and happy pal ends up swallowing a bottle of pills after the deluge of taunts. While Ambrosius readily puts the spotlight on headline-making issues, for her, the clip wasn’t just about adding her voice to the public conversation, but also sharing the consequences of anti-gay bullying that she’s witnessed firsthand. “The concept for ‘Far Away’ definitely wasn’t unexpected for me as it was a personal experience that I’d had in writing the song. It came from a personal experience I was going through ’round about the time I wrote it, which is 2008, [when] a friend of mine attempted to commit suicide,” she recently told MTV News. “Being a friend of someone that is in such a dark place, you can’t be there for them as a friend because it’s one of the most heart-wrenching things you can go through, not being able to help someone.” For the former Floetry songstress, crafting “Far Away,” from her forthcoming solo debut, Late Nights & Early Mornings, was a chance to empower people like her friend who are struggling with abusive situations related to their sexuality. “So a couple years later I get to do ‘Far Away’ for my album, and it felt only right to portray the story as it was in such an honest form. And I think many people that go through the same circumstance don’t get to tell their story. And I think that’s where, I guess, people are getting with the shock value; that I’m attacking a subject matter that’s often shunned upon and overlooked. But it’s happening to real people — it happened to a friend of mine — and I wanted to give that to those that don’t have that voice,” she said. Ambrosius’ video also unambiguously features an affectionate, healthy same-sex relationship — including a loving lip-lock — which isn’t a typical music-video story line. The songstress conceded that she’s received a range of feedback (mostly positive) about the visual, but was more amped that her work has sparked a dialogue instead of just landing a blanket stamp of approval. “Overall, I’m glad it’s got people talking, and the overwhelming positive response definitely outweighs anything negative that had been said. Anything negative is always summed up with, ‘I still understand where you’re coming from, but it’s just not my thing.’ But the overall message isn’t overlooked, so overall … it’s opened a floor for people that weren’t speaking before. It’s getting people talking to one another that wouldn’t have said ‘Hello’ in the street. So it’s getting true feelings out there on the table as honest and open as you can be,” she said. “So I’m kind of glad that regardless if you disagree or agree, I’m not here to change your mind, I’m here to show what’s happening to real people.” What do you think of Marsha Ambrosius’ “Far Away” video? ‘American Idol’ Finds Golden Girls In San Francisco

Final audition night has lots of strong female contestants and one standout male in James Durbin. By Gil Kaufman Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson on “American Idol” Photo: FOX The “American Idol” train pulled into San Francisco on Wednesday night (February 9) for its final shot at discovering a diamond in the rough in the same city where the show found Adam Lambert two years ago. And, wouldn’t you know it, they found the man who just might prove to be the straight-young-dad version of Lambert in James Durbin, along with a gang of really strong female contenders. Ukrainian singer and sexy video vixen Inessa Lee, 22, was not one of them, though. She seemed more primed for next American, um, adult entertainer, with her belly dancing, yoga poses and an especially wobbly “All Out of Love” by Air Supply. Steven Tyler was charmed, but even her Betty Boop voice and their shared Eastern European ancestry wasn’t enough to punch a ticket to Hollywood. “Cute, you get 110 percent; but singing … eesh,” Tyler said. Duffy has been good to a number of auditioners this year, and a song by the Brit did the trick again for raven-haired Tucson, Arizona, dance-studio manager Brittany Mazur, 21, as well, who brought a smile to the panel’s faces with her rich, soulful voice. There were also unanimous yeses for jazzy Lara Johnston and sensitive brawny belter Matthew Nuss, whom Tyler dubbed a “diamond in the rough.” Stefano Langone had one of those stories “Idol” cannot resist. The unemployed 21-year-old was told he’d never walk again after a horrible car crash, but he rallied and brought his positive energy to Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” nailing his audition thanks to some powerful, if a bit nasally, vocals. “Nice voice, dude, got a little ‘hood up in there … I like that,” Randy Jackson said, praising Langone’s streetwise phrasing. Jennifer Lopez had props for his matinee-idol looks and star quality too. Big round glasses and LBC attitude got karaoke host Clint Jun Gamboa some attention in the audition room, but it was his high-and-tight, gospel&B-flavored cover of Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” that put him through. “The notes and the way you sang that song was brilliant,” Tyler said, with Jackson calling Gamboa one of the best auditions of the San Francisco trip. The night’s signature wackadoodle was unemployed El Paso, Texas, clown Kenneth Berba, who ran into the room wearing a homemade lion outfit that earned him an immediate no. That, of course, set up the obligatory horrible-singer montage, highlighted by a maniac in an incredibly detailed homemade Transformer costume that blew the judges away more than his silly try at “Born to be Wild.” Not easily impressed by other people’s footwear, Lopez loved Julie Zorrilla’s golden shoes. The 20-year-old student comes from a well-heeled family that left Colombia to escape shakedowns from the nation’s guerrilla fighters in the 1990s, and her brilliant smile and upbeat attitude was almost as engaging as her emotionally rich cover of the “Idol” staple “Summertime.” Breathy and leisurely, Zorrilla put plenty of attitude into her take on the “Porgy and Bess” classic. “Fabulous, beautiful, great range,” Tyler told the alluring beauty. “And great star quality.” Lopez appreciated her confidence, and Jackson liked how she switched up the arrangement. We’ve had precious few rockers so far this season, and it seemed like long and curly-haired blond belter Dave Combs, 25, might have the stuff. His rough-and-tumble attempt at the Beatles’ “Oh! Darling” just didn’t do it for Tyler (wearing a Beatles T-shirt, no less), who just seemed annoyed at how off the melodic mark Combs was. He was the first of a string of fellas who blew it and got harsh rebukes from the Aerosmith singer. A week after her house burned down, strawberry-haired free-spirit barista Emily Anne Reed, 26, proved to be plenty cute and fun to look at, but her falsetto attempt at Harry Warren’s jazz tune “You’re Getting to Be a Habit With Me” split the judges. Lopez loved her unique, high and squeaky tone, but Tyler thought the melody left a lot to be desired. Randy disagreed and complimented the unusual tone, which left it up to Lopez, who agreed to give Reed one more shot. The producers saved a doozy for the final audition spot. The hard-knock story told by James Durbin, 21, was almost too much to believe. He grew up barely knowing his bass-playing dad, who was always on the road, and was raised by his mom after his father died of a drug overdose. Later diagnosed with both Tourette syndrome and Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, Durbin turned to music to help calm his sometimes-rattled nerves. The unemployed young father with the faux-hawk had everything to prove to the panel, and he immediately grabbed their ears with a wailing, Lambert-esque moon-shot take on Led Zeppelin’s “You Shook Me.” And, in what will likely be another boost to Aerosmith catalog sales , he asked if he could give “Dream On” a shot as well. Tyler dug it, shaking his head along, his eyes closed as he took in Durbin’s booming, emotion-laden voice. “I like you, I like your voice, my god, what a range,” Randy said. “Wow, that was over the top, wow, that was so, so good,” Tyler added. “You sing from where you’re supposed to sing from, from feeling, from heart, from our soul, from the need to feel and make others feel,” Lopez gushed. And so it goes. Next stop, Hollywood Week, which kicks off Thursday night, promising much more elation, heartbreak and stress-induced meltdowns. Christina Aguilera Sings National Anthem At Super Bowl

Pittsburgh native’s performance followed ‘Glee’ star Lea Michele’s rendition of ‘America the Beautiful.’ By Jocelyn Vena Christina Aguilera sings the national anthem at Super Bowl XLV Photo: Jamie Squire/Getty Images As football fans gathered on Sunday night (February 6) to watch the match-up between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers at Super Bowl XLV, Christina Aguilera took to the stage to perform the national anthem. Moments earlier, “Glee” star Lea Michele performed “America the Beautiful” before kickoff in chilly Dallas. Wearing her hair down and donning a black suit, Aguilera belted out the song as both the Terrible Towels and Cheese Heads counted down the moments until the big game. The Grammy winner got the crowd hyped as she hit the crescendos of the song, while celebrities and players looked on, many of the players nervously looking to the sky or holding back tears as they prepared to take the field. Although her voice never wavered as she paid tribute to the country in song, Aguilera did briefly flub the lyrics, but she handled it like a pro, rendering the mistake barely noticeable. The singer grew up outside of Pittsburgh and is presumably a Steelers fan. “I have been performing the anthem since I was 7 years old and I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true,” Aguilera said recently. “I am really excited to be part of such an iconic event.” Related Photos Christina Aguilera Sings The National Anthem At Super Bowl XLV Related Artists Christina Aguilera

‘Rio’ Trailer Contains Embedded Code For ‘Angry Birds’ Game

Movie tie-in connects hit bird-slingshotting game to upcoming animated film starring voice of Jesse Eisenberg. By Adam Rosenberg A scene from “Rio” Photo: Fox Filmes do Brasil Fox aired a 30-second spot for its forthcoming animated family comedy “Rio” during the fourth quarter of a tense showdown between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers at Super Bowl XLV. In an advertising first, the trailer contained an embedded code for an unlockable level in the top-selling Apple App Store game “Angry Birds.” The level connects to a larger contest that offers participants the opportunity to win a trip to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil for the film’s March 22 premiere. Also out in March is “Angry Birds Rio,” a movie tie-in that brings developer Rovio Mobile’s hit bird-slingshotting game to the characters and locales of the Fox film. “Rio” is the work of “Ice Age” director Carlos Saldanha and “Big Momma’s House” writer Don Rhymer. “The Social Network” star and Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg lends his voice to the lead bird role of Blu, a rare species of macaw living in Minnesota who is sent off on a high-flying adventure to Rio de Janeiro where he is meant to find fellow macaw Jewel (Anne Hathaway) and … ahem … repopulate the species. Things don’t quite prove to be that simple however, with everything from poachers to Blu’s pesky fear of flying getting in the way. Blu encounters a range of colorful characters on his journey, voiced by the likes of George Lopez, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Mann, Tracy Morgan, Will.i.am, Jamie Fox and Jane Lynch, among others. The trailer features Blu flapping his way through a series of wacky situations, all of them involving a multicolored rainbow of tropical birds. “Rio” hits theaters on April 15, an American/Brazilian production from 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios. Christina Aguilera’s Super Shitty Superbowl Performance of the Day

I’m not American and apparently either is Christina Aguilera, cuz otherwise she’d know the words…. I can assume has been too busy eating her weight in food to take the 10 minutes it takes to memorize a song you normally have ingrained in your every inch cuz you’re American…this is shit you learn at a young age so you remember how proud you are…that is when your youth isn’t robbed of you for the personal gain of your mother who figures it’s easier to whore your kid out than to whore yourself out…. This is probably old news by now, since every American is watching the superbowl and probably very offened this first generation would piss on a nation on its proudest day, on its proudest Texan soil…she might as well shoulda come our dressed like an arab with a burning flag. Let’s hope this ruins her…get her blacklisted and forces her to move to Canada cuz her voice is irritating…. Christina Aguilera botched the national anthem something fierce before the Super Bowl. Aguilera started out all right, but she had a problem with the ramparts — specifically, the “O’er the ramparts we watched” line, which she left out altogether. .. Aguilera tried to make up for it by combining two lines — “What so proudly we watched,” instead of “What so proudly we hailed”, but let’s just say that it was too late to reverse the error. Twitter blew up, and all Aguilera could do was to oversing every word from there on out, which she most certainly did. Here is Will.I.Am ripping off Daft Punk’s Show from 4 years ago, cuz Will.I.Am is about as creative as Ripping off a bunch of Electro DJs gets…#fullofshit Everyone cares that Eminem did this Ad for Detroit….cuz he’s the only idiot rich enough to leave Detroit who stays in Detroit….
