Red Hot Chili Peppers’ New Video To Be Directed By … Kreayshawn?

RHCP will film ‘The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie’ clip with up-and-coming ‘Gucci Gucci’ rapper. By James Montgomery Kreayshawn Photo: Michelle Crowe The Red Hot Chili Peppers ‘ debut album was released in 1984, a full five years before Bay Area “based goddess” Kreayshawn made her debut as a human being. Yet that’s not stopping the two sides from joining forces on RHCP’s new “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” video, which Kreay will direct. That’s according to reps for each act’s respective labels (Warner Bros. and Columbia), who confirmed the collaboration to MTV News. “Maggie” is the first single from the Chili Peppers’ much-anticipated I’m With You, their first studio album in more than five years. Details on the video are scarce, and while the idea of Kreayshawn — the rapper who recently became the subject of an intense bidding war between labels thanks to her Internet smash “Gucci Gucci” — directing a video for the Red Hot Chili Peppers might seem like a rather interesting choice for the iconic group, she’s actually been making clips for years (mostly notably for Lil B) and reportedly attended the Berkeley film school. In fact, part of the reason Kreayshawn decided to ink a deal with Columbia Records was because they agreed to let her continue to make music videos, as she told MTV News earlier this month. “Columbia was the best just because they were like, ‘We want you to do exactly what you’ve been doing,’ which is, like, I’ve been directing music videos, so they were like, ‘We want you to keep doing that,’ ” she said. “You know, I do a little graphic design, and they had me make my own logo, you know?” What do you think about Kreayshawn directing the Chili Peppers’ new video? Chris Brown Latest Celeb To Apologize For Using Gay Slur

Cee Lo Green, Tracy Morgan and Blake Shelton have also issued mea culpas recently for seemingly homophobic comments. By Gil Kaufman Chris Brown Photo: Jason Kempin/ WireImage On Wednesday, Chris Brown became the latest celebrity to apologize to the LGBT community for using a gay slur in anger. The singer issued a Twitter mea culpa for an incident on Tuesday in which he lashed out at several photographers in Los Angeles whom he believed had tipped off parking-enforcement officers to his illegally parked car, saying, “Y’all n—as is weak. Did you call them to try and film me? Y’all n—as is gay!” The comments came just days after comedian Tracy Morgan met with LGBT youth in New York following his anti-gay rant during a recent stand-up appearance, which earned the “30 Rock” star widespread scorn from the gay community for his seeming advocacy of violence against gay youth. The Human Rights Campaign told TMZ that “invoking words to demean gay Americans is just plain unacceptable … Brown should know better.” Brown, who has made outrageous digital comments before — including a homophobic attack on former B2K singer Raz B in December — only to ask forgiveness for them a short time later, issued an apology on Twitter on Wednesday night, writing, “I have total respect for Gay community and my intention was not to insult anyone in it.” A spokesperson for Brown could not be reached for comment at press time. Herndon Graddick, senior director of programs for GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), told MTV News that while it may seem like this kind of casual homophobia is on the rise, what we’re seeing might simply be a result of the increasingly interconnected nature of our society. “People are being filmed while getting a parking ticket and commenting on Twitter and there’s more opportunity for the things celebrities to say to reach the public,” he said. “But I think celebrities and people in the public eye are also increasingly cognizant that they have to respect all of their fans, and when things happen, they have an interest in correcting that behavior.” Brown is certainly not alone in using words that may hurt some of his fans. Two members of the celebrity judging panel on NBC’s hit reality singing show “The Voice” have also issued apologies recently for using anti-gay slurs. After a performance with Rihanna in Minneapolis last week, Cee Lo Green posted a Twitter response to a negative review by critic Andrea Swensson, writing, “I respect your criticism, but be fair! People enjoyed last night! I’m guessing you’re gay? And my masculinity offended you? Well f— you!” After the rant went viral, Green issued a public apology, telling Us Weekly, “I most certainly am not harboring any sort of negative feeling toward the gay community. I don’t have an opinion on people with different religious, sexual or political preferences,” said Green, who added that he assumed the critic would understand that his comments were “all in good fun” and that he didn’t mean any harm. “I’m one of the most liberal artists that I think you will ever meet, and I pride myself on that. Two of the remaining members that I have on my team on ‘The Voice’ are proud and outspokenly gay. We just did a team performance of ‘Everyday People,’ and I picked that song for us to do specifically to highlight how we can get along even though we’re so different.” Similarly, fellow judge Blake Shelton landed in hot water last month when he tweeted the comment, “Re-writing my fav Shania Twain song … Any man that tries touching my behind he’s gonna be a beaten, bleedin’, heaving kind of guy.” The original lyrics are, “Any man of mine better walk the line/ Better show me a teasin’, squeezin’, pleasin’ kinda time.” GLAAD weighed in, suggesting that Shelton’s comments sounded like a threat against any man who took a pass at him and demanded an apology. Shelton quickly recanted in a series of tweets, writing, “Hey y’all allow me to seriously apologize for the misunderstanding with the whole re-write on the Shania song last night … It honestly wasn’t even meant that way… I now know that [there] are people out there waiting to jump at everything I say on here or anywhere … But when it comes to gay/lesbian rights or just feelings … I love everybody. So go look for a real villain and leave me out of it!!!” Herndon said that with an American public that is more supportive of gay people than ever, not to mention more aware of the impact of harmful language, for better or worse, celebrities are often looked to to set the standard for acceptable behavior. “I think that language can be homophobic and people can as well,” he said. “I’m not going to judge the intent of what [Brown] was saying; he was clearly pissed about a parking ticket. But his intent is less important than the actual impact. When people hear other people use the kind of language that makes ‘gay’ equivalent to ‘bad,’ it communicates a message, and it’s important that people are aware of that. I don’t think every time anyone has spoken those words their personal viewpoint is homophobic, but the impact can be damaging.” The string of public anti-gay slurs has also included a number of sports figures, such as Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who was fined $100,000 for yelling anti-gay slurs at a referee in April, and Chicago Bulls’ Joakim Noah, who was fined $50,000 in May for directing an anti-gay slur at a fan during game three of the Eastern Conference Finals. Chris Brown Comeback Inspires Yung Joc On New Mixtape

‘There are a lot of cats that people say it’s over for,’ rapper tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Yung Joc’s Ready to Fly Photo: Swagg Entertainment Mixtape Daily Main Pick Artist : Yung Joc Representing : Atlanta Mixtape : Ready to Fly Real Spit : Yung Joc knows what his doubters think of him, but on his latest mixtape, Ready to Fly, the Atlanta rapper aims to change the public perception that he has fallen off. “I think this mixtape is definitely one of those ones that people should definitely check out, especially for the naysayers that’s like, ‘It’s over for that guy.’ That’s cool too. There are a lot of cats that people say it’s over for,” Joc told Mixtape Daily before likening himself to another phoenix-from-the-ashes pop star. “I remember on my last mixtape, Grind Flu, I got a song with Chris Brown. I remember people were like, ‘Why you got Chris on there? It’s over for him.’ Look at him now.” Joc, who rose to prominence after his Grammy-nominated debut single “It’s Goin’ Down,” helped kick-start hip-hop’s snap craze. The track even caught the attention of actor Tom Cruise, who famously did the song’s accompanying motorcycle dance during a BET broadcast. Despite earning a gold plaque for his 2006 Yung Joc City album and multiplatinum credits for his single, Joc seemed to lose steam and hasn’t released an album since his 2007 sophomore effort, Hustlenomics. Not that he’s completely disappeared: Joc appeared on R&B singer Slim’s 2008 single “So Fly” and alongside Diddy a year later on Day26’s “Imma Put It on Her.” “It’s just funny how people jump ship so fast. It don’t take but a little buzz, a little heat up under that frying pan to heat things up, and people are right back on the bandwagon,” Joc said. “Hopefully that’s what this mixtape will do, because I’m gonna keep coming, dropping video after video.” For Ready to Fly ‘s cover, Joc drew inspiration from the Notorious B.I.G.’s 1994 classic debut Ready to Die, swapping out the Biggie baby for a picture of himself. While Joc paid homage on the cover, Ready to Fly isn’t all about B.I.G.; it’s a nod to Joc’s Southern roots and original Atlanta sound — which he never abandoned. DJ Sense and DJ Demp host the tape, while rappers like Tity Boi , Yo Gotti, Gucci Mane and 8Ball make appearances. Will it be Joc’s big comeback? Only time will tell, but so far, things sounds pretty fly. Joints to Check For

David Cook Stays In Bed On ‘This Loud Morning’

‘There were mornings where I woke up and it was just like, ‘OK, I just need to stay in bed and try again tomorrow,’ ‘ he tells MTV News. By Jim Cantiello David Cook in his video for “The Last Goodbye” Photo: RCA David Cook is not a morning person. Throughout his new album, This Loud Morning, available everywhere June 28, there are numerous references to falling skies, suns and stars. The “night keeps calling” him. On the nearly six-minute closer “Rapid Eye Movement,” he hoarsely sings his desire to “kill the blinding lights of day.” Who could blame him for wanting to escape reality? In the year that preceded the studio sessions for This Loud Morning, Cook experienced new highs of a successful post-“American Idol” world tour and crushing lows after losing older brother Adam to cancer. “The world around me got a little loud, so there were mornings where I woke up and it was just like, ‘OK, I just need to stay in bed and try again tomorrow,’ ” Cook recently told MTV News. David stayed in bed, so to speak, by crafting a dozen ditties that each feature subtle dreamlike studio flourishes. Songs blend into one another. Melodies and themes reappear. This Loud Morning is not a “concept album,” per se, but it’s the most focused and complete artistic statement an “Idol” winner has created since Kelly Clarkson’s personal My December from 2007. (Incidentally, both were released by 19 Recordings/ RCA Records.) “The last thing I wanna do is make a record where it’s like, ‘Here’s the first song, and that ends; three-second break. Here’s the next song, that ends; three-second break.’ I don’t want to make a collection of songs; I want to make an album. That’s the goal. I feel like with this album, I really outdid my prior endeavor,” Cook said. To achieve David’s dream-inspired vision, he and executive producer Matt Serletic spent 18 months adding music boxes, echo-y strings, boys’ choirs, Theremins and sitars to Cook’s grungy guitars and pop-metal melodies. Some instruments are easier to pick out than others. David promises “headphone nuggets” on repeated listens. (Four spins in, I still couldn’t find a Theremin if my life depended on it.) As “arty” as that might sound, fans will be pleased to hear that This Loud Morning is populated with enough massive choruses to put a Monster Ballads compilation CD to shame. Every single track erupts with an arena-ready midtempo sing-along, tailor-made for lighters above heads. There are guitar solos straight out of Bryan Adams’ ’90s oeuvre. Guitarist Neal Tiemann channels U2’s The Edge on “We Believe,” an anthem about blind faith. Later, “Paper Heart” bursts at the seams thanks to an earworm of a lick that Coldplay members wish they thought of first. Tiemann and bandmate Andy Skib deliver the album’s biggest surprise, co-writing (with Cook) the spacious and timeless ballad “Goodbye to the Girl.” David gently croons over “Golden Slumbers”-esque chords, “When did all the gold around us rust, turning all the love we had to dust/ It took the best of you.” It’s a side of his voice fans haven’t heard since he belted Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Music of the Night” on “Idol.” Eventually, the track builds with swirling rock organs, strings and a doozy of a chorus that you swear Journey’s Steve Perry is singing. The topic of love dominates the majority of Cook’s new songs. The sweeping power-waltz “Fade Into Me” — co-written by David, Jamie Houston and Better Than Ezra’s Kevin Griffin — finds the rocker tapping into his sensual side. “Fade into me, fade into you/ The two of us melting together until we become something new,” goes the chorus. Pretty sure he’s not talking about a conjoined twin. Ahem. Two tracks later, his lover has grown distant. David pleads, “Give me one more try before we say goodbye,” but then, the song’s called “Take Me As I Am,” so one can only assume that Cook himself isn’t willing to change. Eventually he accepts his relationship’s “doomed” status on kickoff single “The Last Goodbye,” co-penned with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. Lyrically, This Loud Morning never explicitly references Adam’s death, but knowing Cook’s history may give certain songs a deeper meaning. “Time marches on without you,” David sighs at the end of “Time Marches On,” just as a funereal vocal arrangement takes over your speakers. What exactly are he and his partner-in-crime hoping to run away from in “Right Here, With You?” Time? No matter what the universe has in store for them, David finishes each heavy chorus with a quiet refrain, as if it’s a bedside lullaby. “I’m on your side.” Cook takes things further on the piano-driven shuffle “Hard to Believe.” “When did you lose any sense? And when did you find that you can’t hold on?” he asks. Three minutes later, the song has swelled and David repeats, “Just stay with me!” Romantic or otherwise, this is a relationship Cook does not want to see go away. Maybe the overarching theme of This Loud Morning isn’t love or dreams, but rather inevitability. Whether you like it or not, all things must come to an end, be it a day, a dream, a relationship or a life. This Loud Morning concludes with the same haunting music-box melody that begins the opening track, “Circadian.” The bookended structure begs the listener to hit “replay” the same way we all smack the “snooze” button on those dreaded mornings where we don’t want to face the day. David Cook invites you to stay in bed and dream a little longer. You can always try again tomorrow. If you can’t wait until June 28 to hear This Loud Morning, AOL will be streaming it on Monday. Are you excited for David Cook’s sophomore major-label release? Sound off in the comments below!

Christina Aguilera Addresses Divorce, National Anthem Snafu

Christina Aguilera poses naked on the latest cover of W Magazine. This might make it difficult for any reader to focus on the interview inside, but that would be a shame. Because the singer touches on two of the obstacles that made the beginning of 2011 so challenging for her: Her split from Jordan Bratman. Her forgetting of the National Anthem lyrics prior to Super Bowl XLV. On why she and Bratman got divorced : “At one time or another, we were both not angels. It got to a point where my life at home was reminding me of my own childhood. I will not have my son grow up in a tension-filled home…” On the Super Bowl snafu : “Everything on the field at the Super Bowl was vividly bright, and I was having a moment. I got lost in the emotion of being there and I messed up the lyrics to the song.” Oh well. Christina has bounced back nicely, anchoring the panel on The Voice , this season’s top-rated new show.

Kid Cudi ‘Stepped Up’ His Acting On ‘How To Make It In America’

‘This season, my character has a lot more depth than the first season,’ Cudi tells MTV News of HBO show. By Rob Markman Kid Cudi Photo: MTV News Scott Kid Cudi Mescudi made his acting debut last year as party animal Domingo Brown on HBO’s “How to Make It In America.” While he was satisfied with his performance, this year, he aims to make strides. “This season, my character has a lot more depth than the first season, and one of the things that I really took seriously was preparing. I got an acting coach; I wanted to step it up,” Cudi told MTV News after filming a scene for season two. “With anything that I’m doing, I always want to take it to the next level — whether it’s music or acting.” The first step toward the G.O.O.D. Music rapper/singer’s acting growth was to review tape, similar to how professional athletes analyze game film. “One thing that I did, I studied the first season, I studied my performance. I knew that I was gonna get a lot more this season,” he said. “I wanted to deliver. I wanted to make the people at HBO happy. I wanted to make my management happy.” Cudi also kept his series co-stars in mind using Bryan Greenberg and Victor Rasuk as motivation to get better. “I wanted to be able to step on the camera with cats like Victor and Bryan Greenberg, who are pros at this sh–, guys who have been doing it for years, and to be able to do a scene with those guys and maintain and really deliver with the focus. I really feel like I stepped it up a whole lot, and I’m excited to see it.” The budding thespian may have to wait a few more weeks to watch: As of now, the series is rumored to begin airing during the summer with no specific date announced yet. When season two does eventually air, fans can expect to see Cudi’s Domingo with an expanded role and a little more depth. “The biggest lesson I’ve learned, I guess, is just the focus part of it, transforming into this character,” he said. “First season, my character was in six out of eight episodes, and I kinda popped up and I was here and there, and my character was more perceived as the party guy. But I really did what I could with the first [season] without having many skills.” Are you looking forward to the return of “How to Make It in America”? Let us know in the comments!
