Rihanna’s Talk That Talk: Five Key Tracks

‘We Found Love,’ ‘Watch n’ Learn’ define singer’s sixth album. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Rihanna ‘s Talk That Talk might be the defining party album of 2011. Released Monday (November 21), the singer’s sixth studio album in nearly as many years is the kind of record a DJ can play straight through at a club, filled with pulsing bangers about all things sexy. To say the least, it’s not an album for those who easily blush. It’s hard, grinding and aggressive. Rihanna uses the type of saucy language not often heard on mainstream pop records. Rounding up a slew of A-listers including Calvin Harris, Dr. Luke, Stargate, The-Dream, Ester Dean and No I.D., Rihanna put together a cohesive record about how hot love can get between the sheets. MTV News’ picks for Talk That Talk ‘s five key tracks: “We Found Love” One of two Calvin Harris collaborations (the other is the equally club-stomping “Where Have You Been”), “We Found Love” defines this era for the singer, whose album is heavily influenced by dance music and club culture. “WFL” is so big and infectious that it’s hard to ignore the strength of this track. “Cockiness” Perhaps the most swagged-out track on all of TTT, “Cockiness” is a no-holds-barred, full-throttle song. Produced by Bangladesh, Rihanna relays absolutely everything she wants her man to do once they manage to sneak away and get it on. Full of sirens, thumping beats, tempo changes and sampled noises, “Cockiness” is raunchy — the kind of raunchy you want to dance the night away to. “Talk That Talk” Joined by her mentor Jay-Z (who lyrically struts over this track like it’s still the “Umbrella” days), this Stargate-produced track is classic Rihanna. Big and hard with just enough brightness, it’s the type of song that can get played on both Urban and Top 40 stations. Where “Cockiness” was brazen, “Talk That Talk” allows the sex to live in a place that feels less NSFW. “Roc Me Out” Rarely is Rihanna vulnerable on this album, and rarely would that happen on an uptempo jam. On this Stargate track (the third of three), Rihanna displays her signature bravado, but hidden in there is one deep insight into who Ri is on the inside when she confesses, “Take a peek at the girl I hide/ I’ll let you in on a dirty secret/ I just wanna be loved.” “Watch n’ Learn” A sort of how-to guide, the playful Hit-Boy track “Watch n’ Learn” is all about Ri teaching her man how to love her just the right way. The lyrics are quite sassy, but the melody is just soft enough to make you forget that the track is actually kind of dirty. What’s your favorite Talk That Talk track? Tell us in the comments!

Paula Abdul’s ‘X Factor’ Meltdown: The Full Story

Simon Cowell calls fellow judge ‘very brave,’ while Nicole Scherzinger says eliminating Stereo Hogzz ‘broke my heart.’ By Jim Cantiello Paula Abdul Photo: FOX America, why are you so mean to poor Paula Abdul? On Thursday night’s “X Factor” results show, the emotional judge and mentor was forced to eliminate one of her groups for the second week in a row thanks to her contestants landing in the bottom two of America’s vote. A distraught Abdul brought the live show to a standstill as she refused to eliminate either of her groups, eventually choosing to send home girl group Lakoda Rayne. Ultimately, she was out-voted by the other three judges, who cut Atlanta-based R&B five-some Stereo Hogzz instead. At an afterparty at the swanky Pepsi House in the West Hollywood Hills, “The X Factor” team recalled how tense and uncomfortable the elimination was for all parties involved. “Part of me didn’t like it, part of me was loving every minute because if it was the other way around, she would have really gone for me,” Simon Cowell snarked before getting serious and defending his old friend: “She loved [Stereo Hogzz,] and it was her big hope,” he said, explaining why Abdul was extra emotional. Host Steve Jones, who’s caught flack in the press for being so strict with the judges, was beside himself over how it played out on television. “I feel terrible I was complicit in that meltdown,” Jones told MTV News. “I was upset. I don’t want to see Paula like that. I know she’s a professional but I am too and my job is to get an answer from her. And if I can’t get an answer, then she abstains, and I move on. That’s the way that the show works. “But I got like five producers screaming in my ear, ‘Steve, we need an answer. OK, she’s not gonna answer, move on. No, wait, she is gonna answer. Move back!’ And chuck Simon Cowell into the mix going, ‘Back off! Leave her alone.’ Whoa, everybody’s giving me major major abuse here from both inside my head and outside my head,” Jones recalled through the haze of a head cold. Despite having words with Jones on the air, Cowell praised the way the host handled the situation. “Steve was in a difficult position. He had to explain the rules, and I think once the rules were explained to us, I didn’t even know [them], then she had to make the decision. I think [Paula] was very brave.” Judge Nicole Scherzinger added, “I was crying as well. I’m an artist first, not a judge. And I know what it feels like [to be rejected,] and I know how much it means to them, and it broke my heart. It broke my heart to send someone home.” Meanwhile, Abdul chalked up her category’s rough start to producers not introducing groups in a way that endears them to viewers. “Our job is to really help America connect with [group members] individually as well as who they are as a group. It’s a learning curve, first season.” Abdul was still upset at the after party, visibly wiping away tears after huddling with her remaining group, Lakoda Rayne, on the red carpet. But the Rayne girls insist they have no hard feelings towards their mentor, even though she had just cast a vote against them. “I could only imagine what Paula’s going through emotionally,” Lakoda’s Hayley Orrantia said. “We can’t blame her for what she said and had to do. We know that she does love us and support us, and we’re here to win this for her.” Fellow judge L.A. Reid was also sympathetic to Abdul’s sticky situation. “What was going through my mind is: ‘I’m glad it wasn’t me,’ because Paula’s put in so much time with these contestants. She really mentored them. She did not delegate responsibilities to others. She did the work, so it’s tough for the second week for her talent to be at the bottom of the voting. I didn’t want it to be me.” When asked if he’ll shed a tear if he lands two contestants in the bottom two, the music mogul responded with an eye roll: “Yeah, right.” The Top 10 will battle it out Wednesday night when “The X Factor” takes on rock music, a theme Cowell spilled to MTV News. Good news for Abdul: She has only one group left, meaning another judge will definitely have a contestant up for elimination next week. Her “Sophie’s Choice” days are over. Sound off about the “X Factor” elimination in the comments below! Related Artists Paula Abdul

Pure Comedy: Rick Perry Buys Hundreds Of Florida Voters Breakfast And Still Can’t Beat Herman Cain In “Straw Poll” Vote

These guys… Pizza mogul Herman Cain shocked pundits to win an early test vote in Florida, beating GOP frontrunners Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. Despite Perry buying hundreds of activists breakfasts on the sidelines before heading to Michigan, he came in second with only 15.4 per cent of the vote. Cain, who owns Godfather’s Pizza, captured 37.1 percent of the vote at Saturday’s Presidency 5 straw poll in Orlando, with Texas Governor Rick Perry coming in second with 15.4 percent. Mitt Romney came in third with 14 percent and Rick Santorum followed with 10.88 percent. While all declared candidates were on the ballot, the first-tier candidates did not compete. Perry bought hundreds of activists’ breakfasts on the sidelines before heading to Michigan. Romney and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota both left Florida before the voting began and their campaigns discounted the straw poll’s role in the campaign. Bachmann finished eighth with 1.51 percent in the straw poll. The results were unlikely to shuffle the campaign’s standings. Instead, they were mostly a popularity contest among the delegates selected by local party organisations. But previous straw polls have predicted the Republican nominee. Ronald Reagan won in 1979, George H.W. Bush in 1987 and Kansas Senator Bob Dole in 1995. The Republican Party of Florida, however, has not organized the test vote in recent years. As much as we hope this doesn’t mean Herman Cain is gonna be the Republican Party’s candidate, it does make for a funny Rick Perry story. Source

Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie: Expecting!

Talk about a great first wedding anniversary present! While marking a year of marriage to NHL player Mike Comrie, Material Girls star Hilary Duff announced Sunday they are expecting their first child: “I can’t believe it has already been a year, time really flies when you’re having fun!” she wrote . “We also want to share the exciting news that… BABY MAKES THREE!!! We are extremely happy and ready to start this new chapter of our lives.” Days before Duff’s big announcement, Hilary, 23, hinted to us that she and Mike, 30, were ready to start a family in the not-so-distant future. “I think it was important that we had a year to just do whatever,” she said. “Maybe longer than that because we enjoy having so much freedom.” “But we’re definitely both thinking about it.” Guess she was serious. Congrats, you two!

The Real Housewives of New Jersey Recap: Child’s Play No More

Everyone is really stepping it up (or at least trying) on The Real Housewives of New Jersey this week. THG recaps it all in our +/- review … Teresa’s doing photo shoots for her second book and the entire family is involved. Between Joe complaining, Teresa whining, the kids screaming, and the parents looking somewhere between bored and annoyed, it’s the photo shoot that just won’t end. The photographers earn a Plus 9 because I’m guessing they had no idea what they were getting themselves into and they still managed some decent shots. Rich is an idiot. Victoria is 16 and Rich is telling Kathy not to talk to her about sex. Personally I think that shouldn’t be one talk but an ongoing conversation and either way it’s completely overdo. Rich seems to think that if Kathy talks to her about sex, that will put the idea in the girl’s head. Minus 15 for taking naivete way too far. Then Kathy decides to have said conversation with her daughter in the middle of a store. Oye. Minus another 5 for not making this a private conversation. And those dresses Victoria’s trying on for her junior prom are terrible. They’re either too tight, too short, or completely gaudy.
