Howard Fineman: Obama’s Economic Policies ‘Saved The Day’

Despite unemployment sitting at 9.5 percent and over 3 million jobs lost since this President was inaugurated, Newsweek’s Howard Fineman says the economic policies enacted by Barack Obama “were good ones and smart ones and saved the day.” Chatting with MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann on Friday’s “Countdown,” Fineman was nicely set up by the shill asking the questions. “Does anyone — can anyone actually believe that the Democrats had then done nothing and had maintained that status quo that the current economic situation would be better instead of worse?” With the ball positioned nicely on the tee, Fineman chunked a drive into the water on the left (video follows with transcript and commentary): KEITH OLBERMANN: Time now to call in our own list political analyst, Howard Fineman, senior Washington correspondent for “Newsweek” magazine. Howard, good evening. HOWARD FINEMAN, MSNBC POLITICAL ANALYST: Hi, Keith. OLBERMANN: Despite what Senator DeMint claims there, in the downturn that started two years ago or more and Republicans policies were in place because there was a Republican executive in chief. Does anyone — can anyone actually believe that the Democrats had then done nothing and had maintained that status quo that the current economic situation would be better instead of worse? FINEMAN: No. I don`t think anybody can claim that, and when Barack Obama took action initially, and when he started making decisions or putting out the idea that he would make decisions even before he was inaugurated, Keith, you tend to forget, he had a firm hand there early on. He had Larry Summers advising him. They knew they were going to pump more money in with Ben Bernanke right away. Any fair-minded observer would say in those first months, those first key months, Barack Obama`s leadership and the decisions they made, which actually had their roots with Hank Paulson and Ben Bernanke in the previous administration, were good ones and smart ones and saved the day. You know, it`s an old American motto, an old Navy motto: Don`t just stand there. Do something. That`s practical American strategy — and that`s what Barack Obama did in the early days, and he was rewarded with very high poll numbers at the beginning for doing that. Indeed he was, for shills like these assisted the President and his Party in making the case that these policies if enacted would put a ceiling of 8 percent on unemployment and would indeed save the day. As it’s become painfully clear to most Americans that they were sold a bill of goods, the President’s approval rating is at an all-time low and the Democrats are looking at huge losses in the upcoming midterm elections. Regardless of such unpleasant realities, folks like Olbermann and Fineman continue to spin a yarn about how great these policies were. With this in mind, let’s look at the data then and now to see just how that day was saved by the man folks like these shamelessly helped get elected. In January 2009, there were 133.5 million Americans on non-farm payrolls. As reported Friday, there are currently only 130.4 million, over a 3 million decline. The unemployment rate in January 2009 stood at 7.7 percent. Today it’s 9.5. If that’s what Fineman thinks is saving the day, I can’t imagine what failure would look like. Yet, even this isn’t a full picture, for the Democrats took over Congress in January 2007. As such, their policies have been in place now for over two and a half years. In January 2007, unemployment stood at 4.6 percent, which means that under a Democrat-controlled Congress, unemployment has more than doubled with almost seven million jobs lost. If shills like Fineman and Olbermann want to blame this exclusively on former President George W. Bush, maybe they should reread the Constitution to learn that the legislature in our government creates budgets. The last budget Bush signed that was created by a Republican Congress had a deficit of only $160 billion. By contrast, the 2008 fiscal budget penned by Democrats had a $459 billion deficit. Only two Republicans voted for this in the Senate. Not one Republican voted for it in the House. As for the 2009 fiscal budget, the second created by this Democrat-controlled Congress, it produced a $1.4 trillion deficit. Once again, only two Republicans in the Senate voted for it with NONE in the House. To put this in even greater perspective, the final budget created by a Republican-controlled Congress and enacted by Bush called for $2.7 trillion in spending. By contrast, a Democrat-controlled Congress with a Democrat President have authorized $3.7 trillion in spending this fiscal year, a staggering 37 percent increase in just three years. Yet shills like Olbermann and Fineman want Americans to believe that our financial woes were all caused by Bush, and that the current President and his Party have absolutely no responsibility for the condition of today’s economy. Makes you sick, doesn’t it?

Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video: A Cultural Cheat Sheet

Clip pays homage to Renaissance painting, M.C. Escher, ‘House Of Flying Daggers.’ By Gil Kaufman Kanye West (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Most music videos aim to overwhelm you with quick cuts, big explosions, clever editing tricks and flashy sets that look really expensive. Then there’s Kanye West’s clip for “Power.” Never one to follow trends — peep how he’s already reinvented the art of Tweeting in just a week — West’s 90-second clip is less a video and more a moving painting in which a grim-faced ‘Ye stands center stage while a galaxy of saintly and devilish female figures surround him. Director Marco Brambilla said his intention was to create a video “portrait” that would “visualize power … to do a portrait of what power would look like in a sort of timeless way.” We spent way too much time studying what feels like a trailer for a larger piece of conceptual art and broke down the imagery in the video. If it’s been a while since your last art history class, get ready to go to school: Dragonlance: An image of a sword descending into a crown hovers over Kanye’s head, bringing to mind Volume Two of Douglas Niles’ series “The Crown and the Sword: The Rise of Solamnia,” in which Sir Jaymes Markham commands the orders of the Rose, Sword and Crown. M.C. Escher’s “Waterfall”: The Dutch artist famous for making eye-popping images in which gravity and space were twisted into pretzels sketched an image in 1961 in which the water at the base of a waterfall appears to be flowing uphill against gravity before reaching the top of the fall, much as the water pours towards the sky out of two urns held by maidens in the Kanye clip. Chiaroscuro: The monochromatic clip plays with this Renaissance style of painting, in which the artist used sharp contrasts between light and dark to highlight the drama on the canvas. Often, unseen sources of light would illuminate the subjects; in the clip, Kanye appears to have an inner glow that manifests in his eyes and the sword and crown above him cast a light on the entire scene. Jean-Leon Gerome: The French painter known for his love of historical painting with Greek mythological themes created an image entitled “Head of a Woman with the Horns of a Ram,” which is not unlike the albino-like female figures sprouting long, pointy horns who frame ‘Ye. “House of Flying Daggers”: Though he’s transposed the action from China to ancient Greece, Brambilla might be paying homage to the 2004 action-romance “House of Flying Daggers” with the scene at the end of the video, in which two combatants are flying through the air in mid-sword fight as white bursts of light fill the screen. Ed Moses’ “HOLA”: This features a haunting single eye glowing behind a swirl of heavy brush marks that some have compared to the mask of a superhero. In “Power,” Kanye’s eyes have an eerie glow as he stares unblinkingly, also not unlike actor Idris Elba’s Heimdall in the upcoming movie “Thor.” Michelangelo: From the rows of Ionic columns surrounding him to the floating parade of gauzy-shift wearing Greek men and women who drift into the frame, Brambilla is clearly taking some inspiration from the classic frescoes painted by Italian Renaissance painter and architect Michelangelo. Q-Tip: The legendary rapper and member of A Tribe Called Quest released an album called The Renaissance in 2008. He said the reference to that period was more than just an album title and a sign of his unwavering commitment to keeping his art pure. Ancient Egypt: Yeezy once again rocks the unbelievably fat chain he wore at the BET Awards earlier this year. Its giant pendant is an image of Horus — the Egyptian god of the sky, war and protection. George Stephanopoulos’s Wife On CNN: ‘Is Monogamy Killing Your Marriage?’

“Tonight – is monogamy killing marriage? If you let your spouse stray, will they stay? Rethinking wedded bliss in the 21st century.” Believe it or not, that’s how “Larry King Live” began on CNN Tuesday. Filling in for King was Ali Wentworth, comedienne, actress, and wife of ABC’s George Stephanopoulos who in February did a striptease on the set of “Good Morning America” for her husband’s 49th birthday. The topic of discussion Tuesday: “Should couples have open relationships and disclose affairs? Could letting your man sleep with another woman actually help your relationship?” In case you were wondering, the following aired at 9PM EDT (video follows with transcript and commentary): ALI WENTWORTH, GUEST HOST: Tonight – is monogamy killing marriage? If you let your spouse stray, will they stay? Rethinking wedded bliss in the 21st century. Then sharks in the water. One attacks and shreds the arm of a swimmer in Florida. Great whites are spotted off the coast of Cape Cod. They’re lurking, look out. Next, on LARRY KING LIVE. Good evening, I’m Ali Wentworth sitting in for Larry. He’s on vacation. I’m very excited about this show tonight because it’s two of my biggest fears. A great white shark attacking me or my husband cheating. Now if you’ve ever been in a relationship you’ll want to stay right here because we are talking about monogamy. It’s been a hot topic on CNN.com all day. Should couples have open relationships and disclose affairs? Could letting your man sleep with another woman actually help your relationship? Well, that’s what we’re going to ask our guests tonight. Bethenny Frankel is here. She’s a star of Bravo’s “Bethenny Getting Married.” She tied the knot in March. Congratulations. BETHENNY FRANKEL, ACTRESS, BRAVO’S “BETHENNY GETTING MARRIED”: Thank you. WENTWORTH: Holly Hill is the author of “Sugarbabe.” She says women should negotiate infidelity with their husbands. And Sarah Symonds is an author and infidelity analyst. Hello, women, and welcome to a hot topic. Infidelity. I want to — I want to first ask, have any of you been cheated on? FRANKEL: Yes. I was cheated on. His — he had a girlfriend while he was — well, he was actually sleeping with her. I was his girlfriend. And she called me in the middle of the night at about 2:00 in the morning and said, can I speak to Michael? I guess he’s going to be listening. Hi, Michael. Hi, can I speak to Michael, and I said, who is this? And she said, I’m his girlfriend. And we hung up the phone and I waited two hours and I star 69’d her so I can call her back and get all the details. WENTWORTH: And she gave you all the details? FRANKEL: And she gave me the details. You need the details. WENTWORTH: Well, you always need the details. Now, Holly — Holly Hill author of “Sugarbabe,” you actually think that’s OK. You think that if you negotiate fidelity with your spouse or lover that actually makes for a long and successful relationship. Am I right? HOLLY HILL, SAYS WOMEN SHOULD LET MEN CHEAT: Yes. Absolutely. And those details that we talk about, if you’re meeting the women that your partner is being with, you’re not building her up to be some kind of supermodel in your head. And we always want to know the details. And the best way to get the details is ask her out for coffee and be adult about what is a very educated and natural thing to be doing. FRANKEL: See, I think that was a low point in my relationship, in my life to be talking to that girl. It really had nothing to do with her. I was in the wrong relationship because I was with someone who was cheating. And I think that negotiating within your relationship about being allowed to cheat is absurd. WENTWORTH: You know, Holly, it’s one of the things that I — I’m married. And one of the things that I think of in my marriage is that, you know, I can go to my girlfriends for emotional support or my shrink, and there are other venues where I can sort of get what I want. But I feel that marriage, the one thing I have with my husband, which is sacred, is a sexual physical relationship. Otherwise, why be married? HILL: I guess the only reason it’s sacred is because it’s — there’s old-fashioned rules that we’re obeying. And if you want to have a lifetime relationship with someone — which is what we all want — it’s about negotiating things within their nature and their biology. WENTWORTH: Now, Sarah, you say that — you started a fantastic Web site, MistressesAnonymous. But you’re not saying that that’s a good thing. This is really a support group for a lot of women that have been brokenhearted because they had an affair with a married man or wanted to be with a married man. Am I right? SARAH SYMONDS, AUTHOR & INFIDELITY ANALYST: Absolutely. And first of all, hi, Ali, thanks for having me on. Hi, ladies. I can absolutely resonate with Holly, I’ve been through certain, you know, similar experiences that she has. But I have to say, if you are negotiating with somebody you probably are in the wrong relationship. Anything that needs that much negotiation probably isn’t right and you should get out of it. And that’s who my Web site is about, that’s what my support group is about. It’s called MistressesAnonymous, which is like Alcoholics Anonymous. But in my group we can drink, and trust me, you need to. It’s, you know, a 12-step program. And literally I help women get out of their toxic affairs with married men, with unavailable men, with bad boys. It’s a phenomenon that’s going over America. You know women are attracting to these wrong guys. And I hear from women every single day. It’s unbelievable. WENTWORTH: Now I want to sort of open this debate up to all three of you, which is that a lot of people say, men and women clearly are different, and we have different needs and men really biologically, physically, their urge is to spread their seed throughout the land, and ours is to kind of, you know, incubate. And when you put that in its very kind of specific scientific DNA kind of way, do we allow men because it is their physical urge to go out and have at it? FRANKEL: I think women — first of all, men are sleeping with the women. And I mean, speaking of the sharks that are going to be on the show tonight, there are a lot of women going out and preying on men. So I think it’s equal. I think a lot of women have a big sexual appetite. So, beyond the television shows, movies, music, trash novels, and magazines encouraging infidelity, a cable news network not only feels this is an appropriate subject, but also at 9PM. With all this publicizing of extra-marital relationships, how do couples manage to stay together AND raise children that honor commitment and vows? Seems to be more and more impossible, doesn’t it?  If you can take more of this, the full transcript is available here .

Court Ruling: Botswana Bushmen Denied Access to Water

Photo via Wikipedia It’s an old battle, and a cruel one. The Botswana government wants the Bushmen of the Kalahari off of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, one of the driest areas of the world but also one the bushmen have called home for thousands of years. Labeling them essentially poachers and squatters, the government uses water as a tool to remove the indigenous people. At first it was by removing them from land they didn’t have legal right to, but after winning rights to their ancestral land, the Botswana government switched tactics. In 2002, officials capped a we… Read the full story on TreeHugger

How Desalinization Works

Photo via Reiner Schubert As our global water crisis persists, we’re hearing more and more about the use of desalination as a viable source of drinking water. Desalination used to be written off as an energy-intensive way to separate salt from water, used on ships as the only option for supplying fresh water, or for communities in the Middle East where both seawater and fossil fuels are plentiful. However, with new technologies reducing both the energy requirements and environmental impacts of desalination plants, and with ever greater demand for di… Read the full story on TreeHugger
