Chris Brown Wins Big, Lil Wayne, Beyonce Rock 2011 BET Awards

Night’s highlights included performances by Brown, Wayne, Bey and Alicia Keys. By Rob Markman Chris Brown at the BET Awards on Sunday Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Music and Hollywood’s biggest and brightest stars all came out to the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles for the 2011 BET Awards Sunday (June 26) night. Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Trey Songz, host Kevin Hart, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith were all in attendance as BET celebrated the year in music. The ceremony kicked off in royal fashion as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, took the stage wearing an all-white jumpsuit performing “Mary Jane (All Night Long)” and “You Bring Me Joy” from her 1994 My Life album. MJB didn’t stop there, bringing out Anita Baker so the two could sing Baker’s 1986 classic “Caught Up in the Rapture.” Chris Brown came up big , winning the first award of the night, for Best Male R&B Artist, beating out the likes of Bruno Mars, Usher, Trey Songz and Cee Lo Green. The ever-controversial CB also took home an award for Best Collaboration for his Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes-assisted track “Look at Me Now.” It didn’t end there for Brown. After a snafu that had Rihanna and Drake being announced as the winners of BET’s Viewers’ Choice Award, it was later learned that Breezy was the intended recipient, making that his third win of the night. Brown also lit up the stage performing a string of his own hits and then again alongside Big Sean, who rapped his #1 rap single “My Last.” Nicki Minaj was a shoo-in for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, and as expected she beat out Diamond, Lola Monroe and Master P’s daughter Cymphonique. Still, Minaj, who took the stage with her Young Money family, started her speech with, “Wow, I can’t believe I won.” The crowd laughed before she clarified her point and thanked Lil Wayne. Alicia Keys shined as well, treating fans to a piano-laced set as she sang new single “Typewriter,” “A Woman’s Worth” with Bruno Mars and “Fallin’.” Throughout the night, a number of BET-related trending topics popped up on Twitter. #betawards, Wiz & Amber and Mary Mary made the rounds on the social networking site during the night as well as #kelly after Kelly Rowland performed her single “Motivation” with Trey Songz. The ex-Destiny’s Child member received one of the loudest ovations of the night. Duo Mary Mary won for Best Gospel Album, and Patti LaBelle received the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented by Gladys Knight. A potty-mouthed Cee Lo Green, Marsha Ambrosius and gospel’s Shirley Caesar all honored the soul singer by performing a medley of her hits before LaBelle took the stage herself. Cali Swag District came out with Doug E. Fresh and memorialized slain CSD member M-Bone , while fallen artists like Clarence Clemons , Nate Dogg , Gil Scott-Heron and Teena Marie were honored with tribute performances by Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Queen Latifah and others. As the show drew near a close, DJ Khaled, Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne took the stage to perform Khaled’s “I’m on One.” Rozay and Weezy had appeared earlier in the show alongside Ace Hood to rock Hood’s “Hustle Hard (Remix)” and returned, this time with Drizzy in tow. Rick Ross And Lil Wayne Hustle In ‘9 Piece’ Video

DJ Khaled, Birdman, 8Ball & MJG and others make cameos in new clip. By Rob Markman Rick Ross Photo: Spiff TV There are plenty of legal ramifications to selling dope off your iPhone, but in their new video for “9 Piece,” Rick Ross and Lil Wayne throw caution to the wind and put their devices to work. The video opens with Ross orchestrating a narcotics transaction from the driver’s side of his car, negotiating prices while speaking on his cell phone. Not even nearby police officers can dissuade the Maybach Music Group CEO from his high-tech trafficking. The track, which first appeared on Rozay’s 2010 Ashes to Ashes mixtape, originally featured T.I., but Ross added Weezy to a new version of the song this past April. As it stands now, the track is slated to appear on Ross’ upcoming fifth solo album, God Forgives, I Don’t. On the “9 Piece” hook, the rotund Ross gives a nod to Memphis hip-hop veterans 8Ball & MJG, as he raps referencing cocaine measurements and the celebrated duo simultaneously: “Nine piece, straight eight balls, MJG, bitch, I got eight balls.” The group makes a cameo in the clip, but it is Wayne who steals the show as he performs his verse from the inside of a nightclub while shooting pool. The eight ball on the pool table provides yet another not-so-subtle parallel to the drug measurement. Weezy raps into his phone as well, spitting, “It’s Lil Tunech, what up, though?/ I’m talkin’ white girl, Marilyn Monroe.” The video then goes NSFW, as the next scene takes viewers into a strip club, where women dance topless for Ross and his crew. Cameos are in abundance: DJ Khaled, Birdman, French Montana, Gunplay and Torch from Ross’ group Triple Cs all make appearances. As the video wraps, there is no grand finale or great reveal, just Ross and Wayne reaping the spoils of a drug dealer’s lifestyle, minus the pitfalls. Have you seen Ross and Weezy’s video? Lil Wayne On ‘Stan’ Redo ‘Dear Anne’: ‘I Just Don’t Like It’

Weezy reveals to XXL that the Swizz Beatz collabo was intended for 2008’s Tha Carter III. By Alvin Blanco Lil Wayne and Swizz Beatz in 2007 Photo: Theo Wargo/WireImage Lil Wayne is his own biggest critic. Although the Swizz Beatz-produced “Dear Anne (Stan Part 2)” leaked online weeks ago to generally positive reviews, Lil Tunechi is not particularly fond of the song. Swizz Beatz talked to Mixtape Daily about his collaboration with Weezy last year, mentioning that the song’s beat was originally intended for Eminem . But after Em passed on recording a “Stan 2” for his Recovery album, Weezy recorded the song and Swizz hoped to include it on his upcoming Haute Living album. However, Weezy told XXL that “Dear Anne” is a holdover from his multiplatinum 2008 album. “That was actually a record for Tha Carter III that just leaked,” Wayne told the magazine. “It leaked out, and everybody’s thinking that it’s going on Tha Carter IV ’cause I was actually gonna put it on Tha Carter IV. But I had been listening to it and didn’t like it. I don’t like it ’cause the song, all the verses are old. And me being a perfectionist, I hate going with old verses.” Despite Wayne’s trepidation, some heads in his YMCMB camp think the song should be a go. “Mack and Tez and them, they love it,” Wayne said, referring to Young Money president/artist Mack Maine and his manager Cortez Bryant, respectively. “They be like, ‘Man, you trippin’, you killed it.’ I be like, ‘Did you hear what I just said? I don’t wanna do that anymore.’ But I heard that the ‘Anne’ song has been getting buzzed up and everybody’s buzzin’ about it, so it might end up one of those you might have to put on the album, you know what I mean. But I ain’t trippin’ on it like that; I don’t like the song. I love the beat; I love the idea. I don’t like my execution. I don’t like what I did. I don’t like how I delivered on it. The idea that I had for it, I didn’t accomplish that, what I thought I was gonna do. ‘Cause I was tryna make it a situation song. And I just don’t like it.” Wayne may have to decide whether “Dear Anne” makes the cut sooner than later. Reportedly, the “How to Love” rapper’s long-delayed Tha Carter IV ‘s release date has been moved up by a week to August 22. Lil Wayne is on the cover of XXL magazine’s July/August 2011 issue, hitting newsstands July 12. What do you think of “Anne”? Share your thoughts in the comments! Related Artists Lil Wayne
