Lil Wayne Swears Off One-Hit Wonders In Young Money

At the taping of his ‘Unplugged,’ the YM boss explains his strategies for Lil Twist, Cory Gunz and Shanell. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wanyne Photo: MTV News Through the years, Lil Wayne developed as an artist. The one-time neophyte of Cash Money records has grown from a slick-talking corn-rolled kid to the multi-platinum face of the label. Now, 12 years after releasing his 1999 solo debut, Wayne heads his own Young Money label, and as he explained to Sway after taping his “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” he’s serious about the careful artistic development of all of his signees. “I’m not gonna shove him in your face right now and make him a one-hit wonder,” Wayne said of his “6 Foot, 7 Foot” collaborator Cory Gunz . “He’s nowhere near ready. He’s gonna do this the way artists should do it, the way Drake did it. “I’m not gonna make a one-hit wonder,” Wayne repeated emphatically. “That’s not what I do.” Lil Twist, who is currently finding increasing success with his latest single, “Love Affair,” will not be a flash in the pan either, according to Weezy. “Twist is ready. Twist is a well-developed artist, and it’s about to be Twist’s turn.” The 18-year-old Dallas rapper joined the Young Money fold as a minor, but rather than have him go for the usually successful, cutesy route, Wayne chose to wait. “That’s why I didn’t shove Twist in nobody’s face. I could’ve been like, ‘This is our young artist’; the young, cute little artist of the label with all the adults,” he said. “I could’ve did that, but no, we’re gonna do this right. I didn’t want to put him out and have him as a kid star, and sometimes you don’t know what to do after that. So now he’s 18, he’s a teenager, and I don’t even have to look at the kid-star thing.” Young Money plans to release Twist’s debut album Don’t Get It Twisted later this year. Wayne expresses a similar amount of confidence in his alternative R&B female artist Shanell. “Shannell is past ready. Actually she came into the game ready,” Wayne said beaming with pride. “That was no developing; that’s a superstar, that’s a very talented woman. It’s just that you have to properly handle her situation the right way, ’cause you don’t want nobody to miss the point, and the point is, that is a very talented woman, and that’s what I want everybody to see.” Don’t miss “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” premiering Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV2, MTV and MTV.com. Lil Wayne Is ‘Lonely At The Top’ But Fears The Bottom

Weezy opens up to MTV News about ‘Nightmares of the Bottom’ track he’ll debut on Sunday’s ‘Unplugged.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News Few artists ever reach the heights Lil Wayne has, and for the Young Money captain, that is both a gift and a curse. And it’s a dilemma that Weezy tackles on “Nightmares of the Bottom,” a new track off the New Orleans lyricist’s upcoming album Tha Carter IV. After performing the track for the first time during the taping of his “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” set to air Sunday on MTV, MTV2 and MTV.com, the self-proclaimed Martian broke down the song’s meaning. “I mean simply, sleeping at the top with nightmares of the bottom,” Wayne told MTV News’ Sway. “Everybody says it’s lonely at the top. It is lonely, so I dream, though, and the only thing I dream about is being down there with the people that ain’t lonely. Thank God I am alone.” With eight solo albums and more than 10 million records sold, Wayne has tasted too much success to see his stock dip, so for him, a fall back to earth is a definite fear, he admitted. “And that’s simply what it is: nightmares of the bottom,” he added before rapping the song’s lyrics: “Sleeping at the top/ Nightmares of the bottom/ Everybody wanna be fly, until you swat ’em.” “Lil Wayne Unplugged” features Tunechi performing acoustic versions of his already classic catalog and places Weezy in the same class as hip-hop luminaries Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill and LL Cool J, who also took the unplugged stage. “Lil Wayne is an amazing choice for Unplugged as he is at hip-hop’s forefront — leading a new generation of artists whose appeal spans across music genres and playlists,” Amy Doyle, MTV’s executive vice president of music and talent, said in a statement. “Lil Wayne’s skills, influence, and catalog are a powerful addition to the legacy of artists who have rocked the ‘Unplugged’ stage.” Don’t miss “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” premiering Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV2, MTV and MTV.com.

Lil Wayne Covers Tupac’s ‘Perfect Verse’ On ‘Unplugged’

‘It’s just something about ‘Pac and I,’ Weezy tells MTV News about performing ‘Hail Mary’ on June 12 special. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne Photo: MTV It’s clear with his “Best Rapper Alive” proclamations that Lil Wayne wants to be remembered among the greats. And with an extensive and well-regarded catalog, he may already be there. Still, during Wayne’s MTV “Unplugged” special, set to air Sunday, June 12, the Young Money CEO pays homage to another rap legend: Tupac Shakur. “I knew because this is my ‘Unplugged,’ I said, ‘I want to do some kind of tribute to one of those great artists,’ ” Wayne explained to us of why he chose to perform the fallen MC’s 1996 single “Hail Mary.” “It’s just something about ‘Pac and I,” he said after the show’s taping last month. “I picked that second verse, ‘Penitentiaries is packed with promise makers,’ and I was like, ‘That whole verse is just perfect — they never realized the precious time that they wasting.’ ” “Hail Mary” appeared on Tupac’s The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, which he recorded under the alias Makaveli. Although ‘Pac finished the album before he was fatally gunned down on September 7, 1996, the LP wasn’t released until after he died. The track has been covered by quite a few rap artists, including Eminem, 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes, who remade the classic together in 2003 with a dis aimed at then-rival Ja Rule. The iconic song has never been covered by Weezy, though, until now. Last November, DJ Khaled appeared on “RapFix Live” and drew comparisons between Wayne and ‘Pac, noting Weezy’s eight-month incarceration for attempted gun possession, his work ethic and overall likability. “Ain’t nobody have that impact since Tupac. Lil Wayne is a genius and he’s a great person. He’s always showed love to everybody. You can’t say anything bad about Wayne,” Khaled told host Sway. “So when he was on vacation, it didn’t feel like he was gone. He dropped the album and it went #1. He was in every video. It was just as big. Now he’s home. When he was on vacation, he was that powerful. Imagine what he’s about to do.” Don’t miss “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged,” premiering Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV2, MTV and MTV.com.

‘Super 8’ Exclusive Brings Us Closer To The Mystery

At the MTV Movie Awards, J.J. Abrams and Co. gave an exclusive peek at what triggers his flick’s chaotic chain of events. By Kara Warner Joel Courtney, Ryan Lee and Riley Griffiths in “Super 8” Photo: Paramount The masterfully mysterious marketing campaign behind J.J. Abrams’ would-be blockbuster “Super 8” — which has included teasers, the super8secret.com site, TV spots and other veiled preview pieces — will officially come to an end this Friday, when the film finally opens nationwide in theaters. Until then, however, we must turn your attention to one more bit of teasery: the exclusive extended “Super 8” clip that was presented during the 2011 MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (June 5). Introduced by none other than Abrams, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and stars Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney, this new footage takes us closer to the mystery than we’ve been able to get thus far. The spot opens with six kids (Fanning, Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Gabriel Basso, Ryan Lee and Zach Mills) in the middle of shooting their own movie at a train station, late at night. The sound of an oncoming train disrupts the scene, followed by the blaring of the train whistle, a shot of a truck speeding onto the track and colliding into the train, creating a chaotic explosion, which is captured by the super 8 camera that the kids were using to film their movie. This then sets into motion a series of action sequences, all pegged to the mystery of what prompted the train crash and what classified cargo may or may not have been onboard. There are eerie non-human sound effects, quick cuts of a small town in turmoil over a series of inexplicable events, explosions, military officials trying to decide how to destroy the certain something that is causing all the destruction, and our kid heroes caught up in the middle of it. So, wow. What does it all mean? For those who prefer not to dig too deep into trailers and teaser footage, we respect your willpower and desire to remain unspoiled. For those who’ve been analyzing every bit of tape since Abrams announced the film, do you have it figured out yet? What is this unidentified object that has sent this small town into an uproar and called military forces to action? Share your theories in the comments below! MTV News has all of the highlights from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards . Lil Wayne Wanted ‘Unplugged’ To Be ‘Flawless’

‘It’s very intimate and they damn sure picked the right artist to do it,’ Weezy says of bringing rap back to MTV series on June 12. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne during his “Unplugged” performance Photo: Frank Micelotta/MTV/PictureGroup Is there anything Lil Wayne can’t do? Weezy started out rapping as a youngster, but the self-proclaimed martian has since stepped into the realm of pop and rock, selling more than 10 million albums along the way. Weezy is well-rounded, for sure, and, according to him, that’s what made him the perfect choice to bring hip-hop back to MTV’s “Unplugged” series. “It’s very intimate and they damn sure picked the right artist to do it, because if you’re not a full artist, you can’t do that. You can’t do an ‘Unplugged,’ ” Lil Wayne told us after the taping last month of “MTV2 Presents: Lil Wayne Unplugged.” “You have to be a full-circle artist. You have to have everything, because it’s so intimate. And if there are any flaws, they will be spotted. So I suggest you be flawless.” The program, which is set to premiere across MTV2, MTV and MTV.com on Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, will feature Tunechi performing acoustic versions of select hits from his classic catalog. The show will be MTV’s first televised hip-hop unplugged concert since Jay-Z and Lauryn Hill taped their respective specials in 2001 and will come 20 years after LL Cool J, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul appeared on the original “YO! Unplugged Rap.” The special comes as Wayne and his Cash Money label are preparing to release the MC’s ninth studio album, Tha Carter IV, on August 29 . “Lil Wayne is an amazing choice for ‘Unplugged’ as he is at hip-hop’s forefront — leading a new generation of artists whose appeal spans across music genres and playlists,” Amy Doyle, MTV’s executive vice president of music and talent, said in a statement. “Lil Wayne’s skills, influence, and catalog are a powerful addition to the legacy of artists who have rocked the ‘Unplugged’ stage.” MTV’s “Unplugged” first debuted in 1989 and spotlighted artists like Eric Clapton, Nirvana, Mariah Carey, R.E.M., Jay-Z and Bob Dylan. Now, Lil Wayne will join the ranks of music’s biggest and most iconic stars. What songs are you hoping to hear Lil Wayne perform unplugged? Tell us in the comments! Jennifer Lopez Poses With Lil Wayne On ‘I’m Into You’ Video Set

New photos show the pair all dressed in black and mugging for the camera on set. By Jocelyn Vena Jennifer Lopez and Lil Wayne Photo: Gilly Iyer What happens when Jennifer Lopez and Lil Wayne shoot a video together? Well, according to two new stills from the “I’m Into You” video set, the two take it very seriously and dress all in black. In one photo, J.Lo is seen standing in a very little black dress and thigh-high boots, looking fiercely into the camera. Wayne is standing next to her, also in all black, checking the time on his watch. In another shot, the pair stands back to back, in the same outfits, both looking like they are deep in thought. The video is set to drop on May 2, a day before J.Lo’s album Love? hits the street. Previous photos from the video set show the “American Idol” judge in a much more exotic locale at Chichen Itza in Mexico. At Chichen Itza, the singer was spotted sitting atop the steps of the historic pyramid, glaring seductively, with her legs crossed, as a camera crew hovers below her. She was wearing a long snake-print sundress with matching bracelets and headband. Another on-set photo shows Lopez in a metallic two-piece, showing her midriff and legs. “I’m Into You” is the second single off her forthcoming album. She climbed to the top of the charts with the first single, the RedOne-produced, Pitbull-assisted dance song “On the Floor.” When she’s not busy being a dance diva, Lopez is judging talent on “Idol,” shopping a new reality show and gearing up to perform at the Billboard Music Awards. Are you excited for the new J.Lo and Lil Wayne video? Tell us in the comments!
