The other day at the weapons check table, where costumed attendees must have their (mostly) fake light sabers and guns and knives inspected and tagged, a Comic-Con security officer summed up cosplay culture during the Con to me: Folks don their costumes at home thinking they’ll stand out in the crowd, only to arrive at the Convention Center and see that uniqueness is almost pedestrian here in San Diego — if only for this one wondrous weekend in July. So what’s the secret to crafting a truly Tweet-worthy, next-level costume? You’ve got your easy jokes on a familiar theme (Retired Batman is lounging outside the Convention Center in a lawn chair as we speak, while a Sad Storm Trooper was spotted holding a sign that read “Need hug. Death Star destroyed.”) but let’s be real: if you’ve been to one Con, you’ve seen most of it all. So, a few humble observations from Comic-Con 2012: Over the past few years Slave Leia has become one of the most overdone costumes at Comic-Con. They’re everywhere. They look the same. Yawn. So props to the guy who made me pause on the street to take this Leia pic: It ain’t Slave Leia, but it works. (Also kinda works as a nod to the stunt double scene in Spaceballs .) Meanwhile, subversive takes on Disney princesses have spawned their own meme category on the interwebs, and Sexy Fill-in-the-Blanks are a staple of any gathering of geek culture. (It’s like Halloween for geeks. Walking down the street in a thong in broad daylight is a fanboy/girl prerogative!) Now, Hot Disney Princess is not a new concept in the cosplay world but this trio pretty much stopped traffic while walking toward the Convention Center the other day. And while they politely declined requests from the random dudes with cameras swarming them on the street, I watched them stop to take a photo with a kid. THE EPITOME OF THE DISNEY PRINCESS SPIRIT! And yet the best cosplay I’ve seen all Comic-Con was one that you kinda had to be here to truly appreciate: The group of youngsters who, with just a few pieces of cardboard, a marker, and a sense of humor, parodied the Christian evangelists who’ve been clogging the crowded walkway between the Convention Center and downtown San Diego shouting about Jesus on soapboxes to disinterested Con-goers just trying to cross the damn railroad tracks: Well played, dudes. By today a band of paid marketers pimping some Stan Lee event were already biting your style, to far less compelling effect. Read more from Comic-Con 2012 here. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . This ninja ain’t shhhhhh Doctor Accused Of Shooting Receptionist Girlfriend At Hospital Still On The Run The doctor accused of shooting and killing the receptionist he’d dated at Erie County Medical Center is still on the lam. Police say they’ve issued a nationwide alert to law enforcement agencies for a Buffalo trauma surgeon sought in connection with the hospital shooting death of his ex-girlfriend. Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said Thursday that authorities don’t believe 49-year-old Timothy Jorden crossed the border into neighboring Ontario. He says all vehicles registered to the former US Army weapons specialist have been accounted for as police continue to search for him. The search began Wednesday morning when 33-year-old Jacqueline Wisniewski was found shot to death in a stairwell at the Erie County Medical Center, where she and Jorden both worked. This guy was cray. They say he put a GPS device on her car after she broke up with him. SMH. Ladies be careful who you let into your lives.

‘We wanted to do our own thing,’ filmmaker tells MTV News about his approach to the upcoming Spider-Man reboot for Sony. By Josh Wigler Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Photo: Sony Pictures Stop us if you’ve heard this one: Boy genius gets bit by a radioactive spider, gains superpowers, acts like a jerk for a while until his beloved uncle dies as a result, thereby inspiring him to start using his powers for good. A familiar tale, right? Those details — most of them at least — remain firmly in place for “The Amazing Spider-Man,” the upcoming cinematic reboot of the iconic Marvel superhero. But director Marc Webb wants you to know that there’s much more to this new tale than meets the eye. Some of the differences between the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire “Spider-Man” era and the upcoming new order are very clear right off the bat: new filmmaker, new leading man in Andrew Garfield. But there are other, more subtle differences too: a tone that’s a bit more grounded in reality, a new parent-centric backstory and a little filmmaking trick you might have heard of called 3-D. All of these things and more work together to bring moviegoers a Spider-Man they’re familiar with, but one who’s more than willing to spin a few curveballs along the way. As Summer Movie Preview week continues, MTV News presents our conversation with Webb about all things “Amazing” — from his “Spider-Man” fandom and the cues he took from the Raimi/Maguire films to why Garfield was the perfect choice to play Peter Parker, and much more. MTV : Aside from having a last name in common with his weapons of choice, can you give us a sense of your Spider-Man fandom? How long have you been a fan of this character? Marc Webb : I knew it obviously from when I was a little kid. I was between comic book series, but there was the animated series that I saw, that sort of thing. But I don’t know what it is: Kids have an intuitive attraction to Spider-Man, something that exists beyond the comic books and all the different media that’s out there. There’s something so simple, symmetrical and iconic about that design that kids are just drawn to it. So I can’t say when I started becoming a fan, but I’ve always been curious. It wasn’t until I got a call from Sony that I started thinking about the character in a more intellectual way. At first, I thought it was an absurd idea, but what stayed with me and haunted me was the idea that this character is so intensely relatable: He’s a superhero who’s just a kid. He’s not a billionaire, not an alien. His normal identity is so ordinary in so many ways, and so relatable, and that’s something about Marvel that I always liked. They made the teenagers the superheroes: the X-Men and Spider-Man, whereas [teens] were just the sidekicks in DC Comics. I think it was at a time in your life when you’re starting to access these stories and mythologies that make the wish-fulfillment component much more intense. I know I have a 17-year-old boy trapped inside of me forever, and that’s something with an instant appeal. MTV : It wasn’t so long ago that there was a trilogy of popular “Spider-Man” films … Webb : What ? No ! What the f—? MTV : It’s true! [Laughs.] It’s certainly a tough act to follow. Was there anything from the Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire era that you looked to when approaching your version of “Spider-Man,” or did you want to stay away from those films and start completely fresh? Webb : We wanted to do our own thing. We wanted a different villain and a different tone. There wasn’t anything I wanted to recapture from those movies, beyond their respect for the character. I thought that was a really wonderful thing. We’re doing something different and new and risky, and I understand that. But it’s something that I’ve found very appealing. I couldn’t let the opportunity go. I have deep and abiding respect for Sam and Tobey and all those movies that were made, but we are trying to achieve something different. It’s a unique set of circumstances when you talk about Spider-Man, because he’s been around for 50 years. People talk about rebooting characters. It’s different than, say, Harry Potter, who has just a handful of books for his entire canon. There’s so much material in Spider-Man that there are so many stories to tell and so many characters. It’s more like James Bond or something like that. MTV : Judging from trailers and the few scenes that have been released online, the takeaway for me is that this is a grittier “Spider-Man” movie, a bit more dangerous than some of the more cartoony takes we’ve seen previously. But the prankster side is still in place too. There’s a clip online of Peter really toying with a guy as he’s webbing him up, so the comedy is definitely there. How did you find the right mix of comedy and darkness in this movie? Webb : I wouldn’t say we were ever after pursuing darkness. We just wanted to keep things real. I think it comes down to everything having to emerge from a real place. The reason why Spider-Man is being so playful in that moment is that as a character, he’s feeling drunk on his power. He’s having a really good time. He’s becoming a bit of a bully there. He’s not being deeply altruistic, and that’s something you’ll learn more about when you see the movie. It’s a reflection of his attitude: He puts that mask on and the shy kid is gone. He’s now this really empowered superhero. That means having fun, sometimes at other people’s expense. MTV : Andrew had that great quote the other week, of Spider-Man acting like an Internet troll in the movie. Webb : It’s totally true. You get to see and do whatever you want without any personal consequences. There’s a danger to that … but there’s a thrill to it too. MTV : I was very happy with the casting of Andrew pretty much immediately. Looking at his work in “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” he struck me as a guy who could nail the comedy and the drama of the role . When you saw Andrew audition, what was it about him that stuck out to you? What made you see Peter Parker in this guy? Webb : He was both funny and earnest and he had a physical ability that I knew I could rely on. I wanted the movie to be funny, but I also wanted the movie to have real emotional depth and an emotional range. He can do that, and that’s incredibly rare: to find somebody who can be light and witty but can also communicate the real tragedy of the character vis-

By James Montgomery Semi Precious Weapons’ Justin Tranter Photo: Getty Images The underdogs definitely had their day in the first round of MTV’s Musical March Madness tournament, running roughshod over the heavily favored higher seeds and sending championship contenders like Mumford & Sons, the Foo Fighters and the Black Keys to early, unexpected exits . Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! And 11th-seeded Semi Precious Weapons definitely got in on the action, giving #6 Fun. the boot in the opening round — no small feat considering they currently have the #1 song in the country . And that was very good news to frontman Justin Tranter’s mother, who is taking this year’s MMM really seriously. “My mom likes to text me about it; she’s very concerned,” Tranter told MTV News. “She doesn’t realize that it’s just for fun. She thinks if I don’t win, I’m going to get killed or something, like it’s the Hunger Games.” Hey, you never know. Still, Tranter said that he’s nearly as thrilled as his dear, sweet mother to have knocked off Fun., mostly because it speaks to the undying support SPW’s fanbase has bestowed upon them. “We haven’t released new music for about two years, we’ve played some shows here and there, but we haven’t really toured for about a year,” he said. “And, of course, Fun. are amazing, and they have the #1 song in the f—ing world right now, so we were like, ‘Oh, there’s no way we’re winning this round.’ But our fans are f—ing awesome, and they’re crazy. … They are so loyal and faithful and determined, it’s pretty amazing.” Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket! And from the looks of things, SPW’s tourney success might continue. They currently lead #3 Florence and the Machine by a solid margin in round two, and if they can hold on — polls close Sunday at midnight ET — they’ll march on to the Sweet 16, where MMM powerhouses (and 2010 champions ) Coheed and Cambria likely await. And though he’s cautious, Tranter believes that, thanks to his band’s fans, SPW have a pretty good chance at shocking the world once again. “We’re underdogs in the whole damn thing. … Coheed’s fans are no joke, and they don’t give a f—, so that one will be difficult even for our beautiful Weapons to win, but they’re sure as hell going to try,” he said. “[They] are so amazing, and [I hope they’ll] keep voting. Let’s win this f—ing thing, because why the hell not?” MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness tournament has reached the second round. Voting runs until midnight ET on Sunday, March 25, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. “The music is insane … It’s coming together great,” actor tells MTV News at People’s Choice Awards. By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson Photo: MTV News It’s hard to contain our excitement for “The Hunger Games,” and although we still have more than two months to wait until its release in theaters, our anxiousness is alleviated whenever we have the opportunity to speak with one of the film’s stars. At Wednesday night’s (January 11) People’s Choice Awards, MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with presenter Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta Mellark. He revealed that he has actually seen some of the finished film via his Automated Dialogue Recording sessions (wherein actors re-record certain sections of dialogue in order to improve the quality of the audio). “I did ADR yesterday, actually. I saw a good little bit of the film yesterday; it looks good,” he assured. “I’m really excited. The music is insane. The sound design, the editing, everything is amazing. It’s coming together great.” Hutcherson said the first scene of competition in the actual Hunger Games — which, for those unfamiliar with the bestselling book upon which the movie is based, is a fight to the death among children — is going to blow people’s minds in the best way possible. “The scene with the cornucopia, where we all first rush in to get the weapons and whatnot, the way [director Gary Ross] has that scored and cut looks so amazing,” he shared. “I can’t wait for people to see it.” Hutcherson added that, despite the film’s PG-13 rating, Ross hasn’t watered down the brutality and bloodshed from Suzanne Collins’ book. Regarding how the flick gets around showing all the gore, Hutcherson teased, “Gary Ross does it. I can’t give it away, but he does it. It’s a little trick. It looks great, and it still has the brutality that the book had, while being PG-13.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
