A recent episode of the smash HBO drama Game of Thrones featured a controversial scene which appeared to depict non-consensual sex between two siblings next to the body of their dead son. George R.R. Martin – author of the books upon which the series is based – immediately responded to criticism of the controversial rape scene clarifying that the action played out differently in the novel, but still defending the shocking decision on the part of the show’s producers. Now, actress Lena Headey – who plays Cersei Lannister, the object of her brother’s unwanted advances – has addressed the scene for the first time and her comments are likely to create more controversy. Attempting to help the audience identify with Cersei’s circumstances, Headey said: “She’s staring at the body of her dead son…she’s joined by her brother who’s also her lover, so, you know we’ve got bigger problems than the one everyone is talking about.” Many have taken issue with Headey’s claims that there were “bigger issues” in the scene than incestuous rape, but amazingly her defense of the scene gets even more un-PC: “There’s lust and desperation…there was this need,” Headey says, describing the character’s motivations. “It wasn’t right and yet it felt great and it played out the way it did.” She added, “And I was really happy with it.” Headey is right that there were many intermingling emotions and desires involved in the scene, but going forward, we would advise her to tread lightly when discussing it, so as not to seem flippant about the trauma endured by rape victims. We are yet to hear from either betrothed party, but another person close to George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin have confirmed the couple’s engagement: The actor’s father! A day after Alamuddin’s law firm released a statement that congratulated these two on their decision to marry, the Oscar winner’s dad told Us Weekly that he’s “thrilled” for his son and future daughter-in-law. Nina Clooney told Great Britian’s The Daily Mail on Monday that she was “extremely happy” about her child’s engagement, adding of George’s fiancee: “Amal’s a lovely girl. I like her very much.” This will mark Clooney’s second marriage, though he had said on multiple occasions after his 1993 divorce from Talia Balsam that he would never walk down the aisle again. But Alamuddin, a 36-year old British attorney who is respected for her human rights battles, clearly won the actor over with her charm, intelligence and beauty. We wish these two the best!
