A Navy tradition caught up with the repeal of the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” rule in Virginia on Wednesday when two women sailors became the first to share the coveted “first kiss” on the pier after one of them returned from 80 days at sea. This crazy bird: A 66-year-old grandmother is under arrest after police say she shot her estranged son-in-law because of an ongoing custody battle he and her daughter were having over the pair’s young son. The victim, Salvatore Miglino of Boca Raton, had his cell phone recording the entire time, and the audio was key to the investigation of the Wednesday shooting in Broward County, Fla. The incident unfolded when Miglino, 39, went to pick up his 3-year-old son for a scheduled visit. His mother-in-law, Cheryl Hepner, stood outside the home with the toddler’s pillow and bag. “According to him, when he asked for the things, she instead pulled out a handgun and starts firing shots,” according to Dani Moschella, a spokeswoman for the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Miglino was shot twice with a .22 caliber Beretta handgun. The bullets hit him in the shoulder and rib cage. Even though he was injured, he pounced and wrestled the gun away from Hepner, then drove away while calling for help, police said. But it turns out that Hepner, too, had called police, with a different version of events. When she was asked by the 911 dispatcher about whether she or Miglino pulled the gun, Hepner replied: “No, he pulled it on me and he’s got it. He drove away,” according to an audio recording of the call. She also mentions to the dispatcher that he and her daughter were in “the middle of a horrible divorce.” But in the recording on Miglino’s iPhone told a different story. Fifty-eight seconds into the recording, three gunshots are heard. Then Miglino can be heard saying: “I can’t believe you did that. I can’t believe you did that … I can’t believe you f***ing shot me.” Miglino told the 911 operator that he had his phone recording his visit because “I knew something stupid was going to happen, but we’re going through a divorce and trying to settle.” “Mrs. Hepner told authorities that [Miglino] pulled a gun on her so it was in fact the exact opposite of what had happened,” Moschella said. “As evidence goes, that was a gem. Drake hit the road with the ‘Purple Swag’ MC, but it took more than a co-sign to land him on MTV News’ 2011 list — vote now! By Rebecca Thomas A$AP Rocky Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News Is Harlem catching wreck still? A$AP Rocky thinks so. And now the 23-year-old MC and his lean-loving, Always Strive And Prosper crew are angling for the baton that was carved and chiseled by Uptown captains the Diplomats. Truth be told, Dipset boss Jim Jones did as much for the rap relay when he briefly ceded the stage to the upstart and his team at the Dips’ October reunion in New York. But while Rocky reps for the 1-2-5, his outlook is as much NY as it is TX. His chopped-and-screwed flow propelled this summer’s Deep Purple mixtape, a woozy piece of work that had the temerity to ride the Verve’s indie staple on “New York Bittersweet Symphony.” Of course, that tape also gave us the inescapable “Purple Swag” and helped A$AP Rocky earn a shot at MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC title. “It came so natural, the Southern flow,” the rapper said of his penchant for blurring borders, on Shade 45 . Midwest ’90s rap outfit Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Houston heroes like UGK are clear influences. “I just made my own lane.” His haze-inducing, Mixtape Daily Award-winning project, Live.Love.A$AP follows in the Houston-by-way-of-Harlem vein, as the “pretty” MC with the fat plaits gets a major assist from beatsmith Clams Casino on tracks like the rock-hard “Palace.” (Schoolboy Q and A$AP associates Twelvy and Ferg also drop memorable features) But don’t let the syrup fool you, A$AP (born name: Rakim Mayers) is very much a product of his Harlem ‘hood, and he pays tribute in his “Peso” video: bodega windows papered with lottery scratch-off tickets, malt liquor bottles at a dice game and rolling MTA buses all make for a familiar backdrop. Next up for Rocky is a compilation LP, Long.Live.A$AP, due spring 2012, and work on his solo album for RCA/ Polo Grounds, where the rap rookie was drafted for a cool $3 million. Oh, did we forget to mention that Drake recruited him and fellow Hottest Breakthrough nominee Kendrick Lamar for his Club Paradise Tour? “I’m trying to earn the right to call myself A$AP Drizzy one day,” the YMCMB spitter joked in backstage footage. How trill is that? Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established in 2010 by MTV News as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. Band entered the Guinness Book of World Records on Wednesday night at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. By James Montgomery Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — For a band that, over the past three years, has been no stranger to adversity — everything from battles with their label to scraps with censors and the occasional stage collapse — 30 Seconds to Mars had probably never had to deal with the kind of trouble that occurred during the encore of their record-setting show Wednesday night in New York. During the crashing crescendo of “Kings and Queens,” a female fan was crushed against a barricade and required immediate medical assistance. “Queens” was the final song of the band’s set, which was preceded by a lengthy presentation from the folks at Guinness World Records, who honored 30STM for Most Shows Played During An Album Cycle (309 was Guinness’ count). Jared Leto invited fans to join them onstage for the finale. Spirits were high inside the Hammerstein Ballroom, and as “Queens” unfolded, they only got higher … until Leto stopped the song and asked for medics to tend to the injured fan. After 20 solemn minutes, EMTs carried her away on a stretcher. “As soon as she got oxygen, she sat up and is doing OK,” 30STM’s management told MTV News after the show. After getting the all-clear, 30 Seconds to Mars undauntedly finished the song and the night ended with the crowd triumphantly chanting its “woah-oh-oh” hook while streamers fell from the ceiling. And not to downplay the severity of the situation, but it helped illustrate everything that made 30 Seconds to Mars’ record-setting run with This Is War so unique. Their ability to overcome obstacles, their willingness to push on, and the otherworldly bond they share with their fans — displayed best when drummer Shannon Leto left the stage to assist the EMTs. The band had already played more than 300 shows, and yet, they still pushed hard on Wednesday, imbuing songs like “Search and Destroy” and “Night of the Hunter” with walloping guitars, anthemic sing-along choruses and washes of spooky synths. Jared sprinted up and down the catwalk stage (not easy to do in a huge black cloak), shined a massive spotlight into the crowd to illuminate fans’ faces, and even performed a few acoustic numbers mid-set. Shannon pounded his kit as sweat flew, and guitarist Tomo Milicevic crunched chords and charmed ethereal soundscapes out of his ax. It could have been show number one, not the final gig of a two-year trek. Of course, 30STM’s fans matched, if not doubled, the band’s enthusiasm. There were signs in the audience touting the Detroit chapter of the Echelon, and at one point, Leto brought a fan onstage who had traveled all the way from Maryland. Every chorus was sung back to the band loudly, each massive chant repeated at top volume, and the opening chords of each new song greeted with squeals of delight. Fans reached skyward as confetti fell, and ooh-ed and aah-ed as lasers shot from the stage. This was definitely a celebration, in just about every conceivable way. Not surprisingly, the band seemed genuinely touched and a tad nostalgic. Jared told fans that the Guinness award was theirs, too, shouting, “I want everyone in here to carry this with them for the rest of their lives,” as he thrust the certificate above his head. As if their record-setting tour didn’t already tip you off to it, the rather frightening delay proved that 30STM are a band seemingly at their best when forced to push on. And on. And on. As Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar plan to welcome their 20th child next year, their recent trip to Israel brought more medical duress for their 19th, Josie-Brooklyn. Next week’s season finale episode of the soon-to-be-renamed 19 Kids and Counting shows Josie rushed to the hospital during the family vacation, in dire straits. She was “congested” says Jim Bob, as Josie cried in the hospital. As the little girl struggles, the rest of the family must decide if they’re going to continue their trip around the country they traveled so far to visit as a group. At the same time, there was no debate over whether having a 20th baby was a smart decision. She admits it’s not for everyone , but Michelle never wavered. The stress of their “littlest little,” who was born prematurely and has endured myriad health woes in the last year and a half, being sick hasn’t stopped the Arkansas family from expanding, as we know, given their impending arrival. What do you think? Is 20 kids too much?
