‘American Idol’ Report Card: Jessica Sanchez, Elise Testone Lead The Pack

Top 10 takes on the songs of Billy Joel with mixed results on Wednesday night’s show. By James Montgomery Erika Van Pelt on Wednesday’s “American Idol” Photo: FOX It was difficult to decide what was the most shocking part of Wednesday night’s “American Idol” : Erika Van Pelt’s new “Little Nicky” hairdo? The fact that Elise Testone may have finally found her way out of the bottom three? Or that, with the full Billy Joel catalog at their disposal, none of the contestants decided to take on “The Stranger” or ” I Go to Extremes “? Nah, we’re gonna say it was whatever Heejun Han was attempting to do with his mid-set strip show (just in case you haven’t watched yet, boy was this a special episode of “Idol”). Anyway, while we’re still scrubbing H.H. from our collective consciousness, we took a minute to hand out some grades for a truly Joel-a-riffic night. Who rode high on the River of Dreams ? Who drove their car into a house in the Hamptons? Read on to find out! Jessica Sanchez : She’s the one to beat, and now she seems to know it, as evidenced by her thorough throttling of “Everybody Has a Dream.” It was perhaps a bit too literal (like, we get it, this is your dream), but dang, when she lets it rip, there’s really no one else who even comes close. Standing ovation, massive praise from the judges, the overwhelming desire to just give her the crown right now … with Sanchez, it’s the same every week, just like our grade for her performance. A Elise Testone : It only took her three weeks, but Testone finally found her groove, positively killing “Vienna” (wait, that sounds weird). Her full repertoire was on display, and she even worked in some of those goofy hand gestures that all the great divas make when they know they’re on point. And she was. She earned a richly deserved standing ovation for her efforts, and if she’s in the bottom three again this week, America is officially the worst. A Erika Van Pelt : Her newly darkened hair only added to her attitude, and there was plenty of it on display during her version of “New York State of Mind.” Sultry and soulful, if perhaps a touch too lounge singer for our liking, but still, she was miles above pretty much everyone else on this night … and for once, people are actually talking about her. Even if it is because of her hair. Small victories, folks. B+ Skylar Laine : She’s got a great voice, and the fact that she’s still standing in the competition is proof that she’s a survivor, but still … it would be nice to see her step outside her country comfort zone for once. Shoot, she did Garth Brooks’ version of “Shameless.” Kinda screechy in parts, but a solid ending probably ensures she’s safe for another week. The judges didn’t do her any favors, though. B- Hollie Cavanagh : Another week, another big ballad from the pint-sized powerhouse. This time it was “Honesty,” and yes, as Steven pointed out, it was plenty pitchy. Randy also got in on the act, giving her the dreaded “come on now.” Yowch. Perhaps the cracks are starting to show. Also, it would be nice to see her change things up a bit, provided she’s still here next week, of course. C+ Joshua Ledet : His roller-coaster ride through “Idol” (The highs! The lows! The Mantasia!) bottomed out this week, as he struggled to connect with “She’s Got a Way.” Still, he battled through, hit some nice notes (and some not-so-nice ones, too), but we have a creeping suspicion the Josh-a-coaster might be entering its final turn, which is a shame, considering all he’s capable of. Like the suddenly sage-like Randy said, “Never ever feel defeated!” C Deandre Brackensick : He kicked off the show with an even — if forgettable — version of “Only the Good Die Young,” and after three weeks of live performances, “even” and “forgettable” are about par for the course for him. Earned polite praise from the judges, a few screams from the crowd, wore a cool vest thingy, but perhaps this is the week the somewhat-good really do die young. C- Colton Dixon : Oh, no way, he did ” Piano Man “! Shocking. Also, lyrical content aside, isn’t this song supposed to be fun? Not in Colton’s world, apparently. Gave J.Lo goosies, probably because she was sitting on an air conditioner or something. The girls in the audience liked it, too, so once again he’ll be safe, but c’mon man, lighten up a bit. And change your hair. It’s not 2003 and Warped Tour doesn’t kick off for a few more months. C- Phillip Phillips: Totally “Phillip Phillps’d” (thanks Steven!) “Movin’ Out,” which basically means he slowed the thing down to a dirge and growled a bunch. Congrats, dude, you proved it’s possible to suck the life out of even the most jovial of tunes! Randy, who was apparently watching a different show or something, called it “one of the best renditions of the song ever.” Go buy a house out in Hackensack, dawg. D Heejun Han : He mystified both Diddy and Tommy Hilfiger, which hasn’t happened since Nelly decided to get into the clothing game, then went out and mystified everyone watching “Idol” with his goofy version of “My Life.” Apparently it was supposed to be funny or something. Gee, it’s a good thing the judges decided to keep him and not, you know, someone who actually wanted to win this thing. Note to Heejun: You’re not as clever as you think. Bobbi Kristina Brown: Engaged to Pseudo Step Brother?

Bobbi Kristina Brown and Nick Gordon are heating up their relationship, and they don’t care what anyone thinks about it. The 19-year old daughter of Whitney Houston went public this week with the fact that she’s dating Gordon, a 22-year old who her mother took in many years ago and raised as her own child. Since then, the pair has been spotted in public kissing and holding hands, with a source telling Us Weekly Bobbi and Nick are residing in a house in Atlanta – and are engaged! “The situation is beyond sad,” this insider says of Brown and Gordon . “Whitney never formally adopted Nick, but he lived with her and Bobbi Kristina from the age of twelve and they were raised like brother and sister. Nick came from a really bad background.” This mole adds that Bobbi is open about the engagement, showing off a huge diamond ring to friends and saying it formally belonged to her mother. If she and Nick truly do go through with a marriage, it will be met with opposition from family members. Cissy Houston reportedly came out this week and labeled the relationship ” incestuous .”

One Direction’s Up All Night Poised To Best Adele, Springsteen

Boy band’s debut album is amping up for a #1 debut on Billboard albums chart next week. By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Adele lost the top spot on the Billboard chart this week to Bruce Springsteen, and it seems that five British boy-banders are also eyeing the crown for next week’s chart. One Direction ‘s U.S. debut, Up All Night , is looking to sell big and give the big-voiced British songstress and the Boss a run for their money. “There didn’t seem to be much hype until all of a sudden it sort of exploded,” Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard, told MTV News about the tween phenomenon hitting the mainstream. “The album should do somewhere in the range of 160,000 to 180,000, that’s what we’re projecting right now. It’s a little hard to gauge just because they’re so youth-appealing and because they’re basically a boy band, it’s hard to project how consumers will react to the album. It could go higher; it could go a little lower. So, it has a definite shot at #1. And if it does debut at #1, [we’re reporting that] it would mark the first time a British group’s first album has debuted at #1. “But Adele could still pull it out and block them. It’s kind of up in the air right now,” Caulfield added. “It’s kind of a race.” What may help them keep that longevity alive is the onslaught of American love they have been receiving lately. Nickelodeon confirmed that the guys now have a development deal with the network and are set to appear on one of its biggest shows, “iCarly,” next season. “One Direction really worked social media and were really active at getting their fanbase energized,” Caulfield said. “It really depends on how far they can reach outside of their core base [to continue selling records and sustain that momentum]. Will they be able to be accepted on radio? Will they become a pop culture phenomenon outside of [teen girls]? With all the right moves, they can do it.” But as soon as the 1D wave washes over the charts and a Boy-band bonanza continues, another, brasher group of lads is also eyeing chart domination. The Wanted will drop their self-titled U.S. debut on April 24. So, can they sell just as big? “The Wanted skew older. Their music is more mature in its content, so naturally they are going to skew a little older,” Caulfield told us, noting that One Direction’s tweened-out fandom won’t be replicated with the Wanted. “Does that mean they won’t sell as much? Well, no, they’re going to appeal to a different group of people. So, it’s too early to tell what the Wanted will do, but considering the single [‘Glad You Came’ is] doing so well, that at least gives positive energy towards what the album will do,” he said. “We didn’t know what One Direction was going to do until this week. One Direction has that [tween] appeal that makes people want to invest in that phenomenon.” Who do you think will take the #1 spot next week: One Direction, Adele or Bruce Springsteen? Shannon Magrane Has One Bad Day On ‘American Idol’

Magrane becomes the second ‘Idol’ booted this week after her version of ‘One Sweet Day’ fails to land her a save from the judges. By Adam Graham Shannon Magrane on “American Idol” Photo: Fox It was anything but “One Sweet Day” for Shannon Magrane, as the 16-year-old “pride of Tampa” was sent packing on Thursday’s (March 15) episode of “American Idol.” With her elimination, Magrane missed the opportunity to go on the road with the “Idol” summer tour. Her version of Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day,” which received decent marks from the judges on Wednesday’s performance episode , landed her dead last following America’s votes. Magrane was given a chance to sing for her life to be the recipient of the judges’ save, but her reprise of “One Sweet Day” was not enough to sway the judges. She became the second contestant eliminated this week, following Jermaine Jones’ exit on Wednesday , after executives discovered he had several warrants out that he failed to disclose. Though it’s largely thought to be the ladies’ year on “Idol,” Thursday’s episode saw an all-female bottom three. Along with Magrane, Elise Testone and Erika Van Pelt also found themselves facing elimination. Testone, who received a welcome attitude check and recovered from a near-disastrous performance the week prior, was the first let back to safety by host Ryan Seacrest. In addition to Testone and Van Pelt, the other “Idols” who will be hitting the road this summer are Colton Dixon, Skylar Laine, Joshua Ledet, Deandre Brackensick, Phillip Phillips, Hollie Cavanagh, Heejun Han and Jessica Sanchez. In defending Sanchez, who stole the show last week with her version of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” but was brought slightly back down to earth this week with her screamy version of Gloria Estefan’s “Turn the Beat Around,” mentor Jimmy Iovine said, “If she goes home, we should all go home.” Also during the show, Tommy Hilfiger was introduced as the contestants’ “image adviser.” The fashion icon will work with them to help “shape them toward stardom,” he explained. Demi Lovato also appeared and performed her latest single, “Give Your Heart a Break,” while Daughtry was on hand to debut the band’s new single, “Out of My Head.” Do you agree with America’s decision to send home Shannon Magrane? ‘Hunger Games’ Vs. ‘Twilight’: Muppets Edition

Kermit the Frog and new Muppet Walter join MTV News as co-hosts of this week’s ‘Talk Nerdy.’ By Josh Wigler Walter and Kermit Photo: MTV News Want a surefire way to cease all productivity in your workplace? Bring in the Muppets. It works every time. Kermit the Frog and newly-minted man-of-a-Muppet Walter graced MTV News with their presence earlier this week, catching the attention of everyone passing through our newsroom at the time. As you might expect, the “Muppets” stars are quite the charming duo in real life. It’s one thing to see their antics on the big screen; watching them come alive right before you, however, is another experience entirely. The effect they have on even the most serious of grown adults (though, admittedly, we don’t have many of those around these parts) is astounding: Within seconds of laying eyes on Kermit and Walter, years of growth and maturity immediately fade away, leaving you in a temporary state of childlike wonder. In short, I fully recommend meeting Muppets if you ever have the chance. Of course, Kermit and Walter weren’t at MTV News headquarters purely out of the kindness of their hearts, kind though their hearts may be: They were here to promote “The Muppets,” arriving on Blu-ray and DVD on March 20. We were happy to chat with them about the awesome home-video release — it has an intermission feature, everybody! An intermission feature! — but Kermit and Walter had more than just their own movie on their minds: They also wanted to talk about superheroes, vampires, deadly tournaments and more. As such, Kermit and Walter were perfect candidates to fill in as special guest co-hosts on “Talk Nerdy” this week. It’s always fun to geek out with fellow nerds about Captain America and Katniss Everdeen, but hitting those subjects with two of the most popular Muppets out there? Priceless. Here’s a quick list of some of the things I learned from Kermit and Walter’s “Nerdy” appearance.

‘American Idol’ Unveils Top 13

Shannon MaGrane and Phillip Phillips are in, while nine singers get the ax. By Adam Graham Shannon MaGrane on “American Idol” Photo: Fox Heejun’s in. So are Phillip Phillips, Skylar Laine and Shannon MaGrane. Adam Brock? Not so fast … “American Idol” revealed its top 13 finalists on Wednesday (March 1), swiftly dismissing half its field after this week’s live performance episodes. The cuts were harsh, as Ryan Seacrest delivered the news in typical no-nonsense fashion, crushing the dreams of some contestants while making others’ come true. A reported 33 million votes were cast, down from the 40 million made at this point in the competition last year. Phillip Phillips was the first one through to the voter-approved top 10 and got a few minutes to soak in the moment by himself before he was joined by Jessica Sanchez, whose purported vocal issues didn’t affect her performance on Wednesday one bit, and tiny Hollie Cavanagh, who “slayed the biggest dragon” when she sang Christina Aguilera’s “Reflection” on Wednesday. Joshua Ledet followed, and next up was Heejun Han, whose dry comic presence on the show was criticized sharply by “Idol” mentor Jimmy Iovine. “This isn’t ‘American Comedian,’ this is ‘American Idol,’ ” Iovine said in a taped reaction to Han’s performance. Han responded by pretending to not know who Iovine is. Shots fired! Shannon MaGrane — who was crying before she was even told her fate — was passed through, as was country spitfire Skylar Laine, who arguably turned in the week’s best performance with her spirited take on Faces’ “Stay With Me,” which played like “Reba mixed with Kelly Clarkson,” according to Randy Jackson. Elise Testone, one of two singers to take on Adele’s “One and Only” on Wednesday, made the top 10, as did Colton Dixon, who took his performance of Paramore’s “Decode” to the top of his piano on Tuesday. Gentle giant Jermaine Jones — who, in a surprise move, was brought back on Tuesday after being eliminated earlier in the competition — rounded out the top 10. Six singers then vied for three judge-selected Wild Card slots, with Erika Van Pelt’s version of Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory,” Jeremy Rosado’s take on Carrie Underwood’s “I Know You Won’t” and DeAndre Brackensick’s “Georgia on My Mind” earning them spots in the top 13. Jen Hirsh, Reed Grimm and Brielle Von Hugel competed for Wild Card positions but narrowly missed advancing to the next round. Meanwhile, nine contestants were dismissed without a chance to sing for their lives. So it’s so long, Chase Likens; see ya, Chelsea Sorrell; bye-bye, Baylie Brown; sayonara, Eben Franckewitz; hasta la vista, Haley Johnsen; peace out, Adam Brock; tootles, Aaron Marcellus; arrivederci, Hallie Day; and later, Creighton Fraker. The top 13 contestants perform live during Wednesday’s two-hour episode, and one will be kicked off on Thursday’s one-hour results show. What do you think of this year’s top 13? Who got cut that should have made it? Let us know in the comments!
