In this weekend’s Carnage , Kate Winslet plays an uptight investment banker who tries to broker a parental agreement concerning the damage done during a playground dispute between her son and another boy. So how did the British actress transform herself from a teenage murderer in her breakthrough role to a middle-aged New Yorker determined to settle her son’s stick fight?

Week in Review: The Golden Globes Try Sanity for a Change

It’s time to do some shopping , kids. After a week of semi-reasonable Golden Globe nominations (!) and the tragic downfall of The Daldry, I’m throwing away wads of cash at the Glendale Americana and never looking back. Do you think they sell the exotic headgear Elizabeth Taylor wore in Raintree County ? Maybe at Zara or something? I don’t know. Let’s review the week and run away somewhere.

It features everything that is awful about bad horror movies — but in such a straightforward way that you can’t help but watch the trailer in knee-slapping awe. Beware: One gratuitous sponge bath, buckets of movie blood and spoilers galore await you.

‘X Factor’: Marcus Canty’s Time Runs Out

Josh Krajcik, Melanie Amaro and Chris Rene will face off in next week’s two-part finale. By Adam Graham Marcus Canty on “X Factor” Photo: FOX Marcus Canty’s luck finally ran out on Thursday’s (December 15) “The X Factor,” as the 20-year-old from Bowie, Maryland, was voted off the show one week away from the finale. That leaves Josh Krajcik , Chris Rene and Melanie Amaro to battle it out for the $5 million recording contract in next week’s finals. Canty found himself in a familiar position on Thursday’s results show when he was among the last two to have his fate read by host Steve Jones. Canty had landed in the bottom two each of the last three weeks but had pulled through each time, including last week’s dramatic finish when he triumphed over cutie-pie contestant Rachel Crow after a controversial decision by Nicole Scherzinger to put the final results in the hands of America’s votes. Canty didn’t have a chance to sing for his life to the judges this week, as votes were decided by America and America only. Krajcik and Canty were the last two standing on the stage, and Krajcik was put through, sending Canty home. The singer, who was compared early on to Bobby Brown, took the news in stride. He was at a disadvantage coming off Wednesday’s episode, after Simon Cowell called his performance of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” “grotesque” and “an absolute joke.” His version of Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You” didn’t fare much better. “It’s not over, just trust me. This is not the last time you will see Marcus Canty,” Canty said after the vote was read. “I gave it my all, and that’s really, at the end of the day, that’s all you can do.” L.A. Reid, who mentored Canty in the competition, expressed sadness at his contestant’s elimination and told Canty he has his support going forward. Some 30 million votes were cast by viewers this week, according to host Jones. Earlier in the episode, Chris Rene was the first act put through to the finals, and Melanie Amaro followed. Jones stressed the results were read in no particular order. The show also saw Florence and the Machine performing “Spectrum” and Nicole Scherzinger debuting her latest single, “Pretty.” Afterward, Cowell weighed in on the performance and mocked Scherzinger’s cosmic judging style by telling her, “I believe in you, you believe in me, you transcend the universe, God is smiling on you, life is a waterfall, and you are the ultimate rainbow.” Krajcik, Rene and Amaro will face off on Wednesday’s 90-minute performance episode, and a winner will be crowned at the conclusion of next Thursday’s two-hour finale. What did you think of the results? Let us know in the comments!

Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’ Is MTV’s Song Of The Year!

British belter’s hit tops MTV’s list of the Best Songs of 2011. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: Columbia Was there any doubt? Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” has topped MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 . The megahit so dominated 2011 that calling it the Song of the Year is putting it mildly. And we’re not just talking commercially — though it was the year’s best-selling track — or critically, mostly because focusing on those details fails to tell the whole story. In a lot of ways, “Deep” was bigger than all that. It was a genuine cultural touchstone, the rare zeitgeist-seizing thing that kept crossing genres and platforms and demographics (quick, try to name somewhere you didn’t hear it) until there really were no borders left to bust. It was a complete throwback, a reminder of an era when folks actually bought music and one single could drive an album for months and months. It was the rarest of phenomena in these increasingly temporal times, an actual defining piece of work — not just for Adele, but for the entirety of 2011. Try as hard as you might, you probably can’t name the biggest song of 2010, but in 10 years’ time, you’ll still remember that “Rolling in the Deep” owned 2011. That accomplishment is all the more noteworthy when you consider that “Deep” dared to focus on emotions that fall outside the usual parlance of pop, circa 2011. It is not about partying or falling in love or material excesses. It does not try to be uplifting or inspiring. There is not a single Will Ferrell sample to be heard anywhere. It is, simply put, a total bummer of a breakup tune, with Adele sifting through the ashes of her failed relationship, the scorned lover who can’t help but lament that, really, “We could’ve had it all.” Of course, she’s not exactly a shrinking violet, either, and “Deep” seethes with genuine anger too. No matter how classy her voice may be, there’s nothing quite as real as her promise to “lay your sh– bare.” It strips away the artifice and adjectives and exposes the raw nerve that pulsates within anyone who’s ever had their heart broken. And, really, that’s everyone. So given that sentiment, perhaps it’s not exactly shocking that “Deep” was such a massive hit. Then again, given everything else, maybe it is. A deceptively simple song, it rolls along on little more than a stubby guitar line and pounding, primal drums and yet it packs a 10-megaton wallop, thanks entirely to some ugly emotional bloodletting and Adele’s sonorous, searing pipes. When she hits that chorus, you not only feel her pain, you can relate to it. That’s what sets the truly great songs apart from just the good ones, and “Rolling in the Deep” is unquestionably a great song, one that you’ll remember for years to come. Which is why simply calling it the Song of the Year is selling it short; it’s something bigger entirely. Consider it the anthem to end all anthems, the feel-bad song of our time, the antidote for the Auto-Tuned masses. But maybe it’s best just to call it Adele’s coronation into the ranks of the all-time greats. She’s now and forever the Queen of Pain . Long may she reign. Avicii Calls #6 EDM Artist Of The Year Nod ‘A Big Honor’

‘2011 was the best year of my life, with so many new experiences,’ dance-music superstar tells MTV News. By Adam Stewart Avicii Photo: Ben Hider/ Getty Images 2011 just keeps getting better for Avicii . The 22-year-old (born Tim Bergling) has had a marquee year, to say the least, and to add to his list of accolades, he’s landed at #6 on MTV’s Best EDM Artists of 2011 list. Earlier this week, Avicii took some time out of his insane tour schedule to talk to MTV News and thank his loyal following. “It was obviously a big honor for me,” Bergling told MTV News. “I feel very humbled by the support that my fans have shown me this year.” Avicii’s massive success has made him one of the most sought-after live acts on the planet, hitting quite literally every corner of the globe, wooing masses of fans along the way. And with his upcoming sold-out New Year’s Eve show in New York City, he’s capping the year with a bang. Playing a 135,000-square-foot room on the Hudson River flanked by rising stars Arty and Swanky Tunes, Avicii will have a fitting finale to the year when he became a household name. “2011 was the best year of my life, with so many new experiences,” he said. “Just looking back at it, I feel so fortunate to have been able to visit all of these places and meet all of these different people.” “Levels” was one of the most recognizable tunes of the year across all genres, and “Sunshine,” his Grammy-nominated co-production with EDM vet David Guetta, is a club smash. Add a massive collection of unreleased, “show only” tracks and bootlegs to an already-impressive catalog and it’s easy to see the impact he’s had on the scene. The future is indeed bright for the young Swede, and he’s already getting his ducks in line for a busy year ahead. “2012 is looking packed already with gigs and production time,” he said. “I’m looking forward to being able to keep doing what I’ve been doing this past year.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Britney Spears ‘Gets A Kick Out Of Fist Pumping,’ Pauly D Says

‘Jersey Shore’ star teases his gig with Spears this weekend in Puerto Rico. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Giancarlo Esposito in “Breaking Bad” Photo: AMC Pauly D has a lot of experience playing shows with Britney Spears . He not only opened for her in Las Vegas earlier this year during the taping of her “I Am the Femme Fatale” MTV special , but he later hit the road with Spears for her Femme Fatale tour . So opening for the princess of pop as she wraps up her world tour this weekend won’t be too difficult for the “Jersey Shore” star. He’s slated to appear with her on December 10 in Puerto Rico. It’s the very last stop on the months-long, sprawling trek around the globe. Since Pauly last hit the road with pop’s ultimate femme fatale , he told MTV News that he has been keeping in touch with his pal. “Yeah [we keep in contact], oh yeah, for sure,” he said. “A lot of tweets.” While Pauly played it coy during our chat about the upcoming gig, he did give us just enough hints to let us know that the show is indeed all set for Saturday. “There’s rumors; rumors have it that I might be on that tour,” he joked. “I’m not sure. I’d love to. I hope so. I like Puerto Rico and it’s nice this time of year.” Is there any chance that Britney might make an appearance on Pauly’s in-the-works solo reality show while he’s out there with her? “She’s busy. She’s really busy and I’d love to link up with her and get her on this ’cause doing her tour, that was another dream for me, to do an artist’s tour. I’ve been a fan of Britney my whole life, so it’s been great for me.” “She was happy for me,” he continued. “She was like, ‘Oh you’re going to be fist pumping on the show.’ She gets a kick out of the fist pumping.” If that appearance doesn’t pan out, DJ Pauly D needn’t worry too much. He just announced his deal with 50 Cent’s G-Note Records , a step that should help to take his DJ career to the next level. 50 spoke to MTV News about the deal earlier this week, teasing some big things. “Pauly’s project is not all his performance on the actual records,” Fif explained of the “hit record” he hopes to make with the DJ, set for release in 2012. “It’s more like what you would get from a DJ Khaled or DJ Drama but also what you would get from David Guetta — so it’s a cross between those two worlds, and I think it’s exciting.” Fans of Pauly D are also pumped for the latest season of his hit MTV series “Jersey Shore.” Just this week, a season 5 trailer dropped and there seems to be enough drama, GTL and smushing to go around for everyone. “There was a lot of tension in [Italy], because we were away from our friends, away from our family, so all we had was each other — that’s it,” Pauly said. “So now we literally ran to Jersey, because we missed it so much, and we just shared that bond, because we’ve been there before, so we enjoyed it with everybody this year. It was really one of my best years , I think.” The fifth season of “Jersey Shore” premieres Thursday, January 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. The X Factor Results Show: Down to Four…

Another young contestant got sent home this week on The X Factor. A week after Drew Ryniewicz was reduced to tears, the same fate befell 13-year old Rachel Crow, who fell into the bottom two and then got eliminated after the judges deadlocked and the show left the final decision up to viewers. After falling into her mother’s arms following the reading of the verdict, Crow – whose Tuesday night performances you can watch HERE – composed herself and said: “I love you so much, everybody, for voting for me and thank you for giving me this because without you I am nothing. I hope this is not my ending. I know it’s not and I will go so far. I promise you!” What do you think? Did Rachel deserve to go home this week?
