Justin Bieber’s ‘Born To Be Somebody’ Backs New ‘Bully’ Ad

‘My fans are always up for supporting a great cause,’ Bieber says in a statement about his support of the documentary. By Kara Warner Justin Bieber Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images On the heels of the very successful release of his new single “Boyfriend,” teen phenom Justin Bieber is lending his star power and the song “Born to Be Somebody” to a very worthy cause: the TV ad campaign for “Bully.” The Weinstein Company announced Monday (April 9) that the Bieber-backed TV spot, which debuted on Fandango , will begin airing all over the U.S. ahead of the film’s PG-13 release this Friday. “My fans are always up for supporting a great cause. It’s one of the things I’m most proud of as an entertainer,” Bieber said in statement of his decision to be involved with the documentary. “I hope they see ‘Bully’ with their friends and help start the conversation so we can end bullying.” The highly publicized documentary, which depicts the often-disastrous results of school bullying, originally received an R rating by the MPAA, which inspired 17-year-old Katy Butler to start a viral petition that received over 500,000 signatures , including Bieber, Ellen DeGeneres, Johnny Depp and Demi Lovato. MTV’s own Vinny Guadagino from “The Jersey Shore” also got involved via the anti-bullying campaign the Bully Project tied into the promotion of the film. The campaign is a partnership between GLAAD and the Weinstein Company designed to spread awareness about bullying and to give people opportunities to add their name in support. Report: After Big Opening, Now We Might Get a PG-13 Bully

So did all that MPAA ratings nonsense and media outcry pay off for Bully ? What do you think? Lee Hirsch ‘s film achieved the year’s best documentary opening to date with $115,000 on five screens in New York and Los Angeles — a $23,000-per-theater average that amounted to the best of the week by nearly $10,000 over The Hunger Games . But now that The Weinstein Company has to take its unrated baby out of the doc-friendly megamarkets and into the mainstream wilds, a new report suggests that Harvey Weinstein may be preparing to make the cuts required for a PG-13. Surprise! Per the LAT : The new cut of the teen-bullying film, which would minimize in some manner the profanities featured in a controversial schoolbus scene, would hit theaters April 13, when the movie widens to 25 markets, and allow children of any age to see it without adult accompaniment. The film, which centers on five families affected by teen bullying, plays in limited release in Los Angeles and New York this weekend. The Weinstein Co. denied that changes were being made now but allowed for the possibility in the coming weeks. “At this time, there are no plans to change the film for a PG-13,” Stephen Bruno, the company’s head of marketing, told 24 Frames on Friday. “We are in constant conversation with the MPAA and hope a compromise can be reached.” The MPAA has been steadfast that the existing cut wll not be given anything lower than an R. Hmm. Where have we seen this before? Oh, right . Also from the LAT : “I did that on The King’s Speech , and Colin and Tom killed me for it,” Weinstein said, referring to a new PG-13 cut for the 2011 Oscar winner, and to star Colin Firth and director Tom Hooper’s criticism of the move. That was another April gambit, for the record — after the R-rated Speech was already out of theaters with $134 million in its pocket. A little more than two months and $3 million later , kids didn’t want to see that either. Anyway, if you need any more evidence that all this “controversy” is just another hustle, then I can’t help you. [ LAT ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Bully Trailer: Documentary Loses Appeal of ‘R’ Rating

The trailer for Bully has been released, and the company that produced the film has lost its appeal of the R rating it believes will limit the documentary’s appeal. The film, about the epidemic of adolescent bullying in America, was rated R for “some language,” and The Weinstein Company hoped for a PG-13 rating. It was not to be. Check out the two-minute preview below: Bully Trailer TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein and one of the bullied children in the film, Alex Libby, argued that an R rating would be counterproductive in that it would prevent Bully from reaching the adolescent audience that would most benefit from the movie. The studio was planning on screening the documentary at middle and high schools. However, for an MPAA rating to be overturned, a two-thirds vote is required, and Bully was one vote short. Following the decision, Weinstein released a statement saying that he is considering a leave of absence from the MPAA. “We respect the MPAA and their process but feel this time it has just been a bridge too far,” said Weinstein . “I have been through many of these appeals.” “This one vote loss is a huge blow to me personally.

Woody Allen Would Totally Cast Michelle Obama in a Movie

“If I was in a room with Michelle Obama, and I thought she was right for a part, I wouldn’t hesitate to ask her.” Woody Allen cast French first lady (and former model-chanteuse) Carla Bruni in a small part as a museum guide in his Midnight in Paris “on a whim” after dining with the President and Mrs. Nicolas Sarkozy. He’d give Mrs. Obama a similar shot, he said on British T.V., if only he met with her first. Sounds like someone wants an invite to the White House! [ USA Today via Onion A.V. Club ]

Madonna’s ‘W.E.’: The Venice Reviews Are In

Material Girl’s second directorial effort finds few early supporters at the film fest. By Eric Ditzian Madonna attends the “W.E.” premiere during the 68th Venice Film Festival Photo: Getty Images The Venice Film Festival turned into something of a feeding frenzy on Thursday, as critics practically fell over one another in an effort to drum up the harshest disses and most damning, damaging turns-of-phrase about Madonna’s second directorial effort, “W.E.” Their cackles of laughter echoed across the pond the next day, as the Weinstein Company attempted some damage control and a handful of defenders staked out claims that the film had been unjustly dismissed. Those supporters pointed to the lush visual landscape Madonna had captured and the touching love story she’d brought to life. But the critics weren’t having any of it. They slammed the garbled narrative structure, cheesy dialogue and directorial trickery that seemed to serve no other purpose than Madonna’s look-at-me self-servitude. Read on for those critiques and more. The Story ” ‘W.E. is rather better than expected; it’s bold, confident and not without amusing moments. Still, it’s undeniably a strange concoction. Madonna (who also co-scripted with [Alek] Keshishian) has fashioned a split-level story of two couples: the Windsors, and the growing attraction between Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), a contemporary Manhattan woman, and Evgeni (Oscar Isaac), a handsome Russian working security at Sotheby’s. Wally, married to an eminent shrink who isn’t above slapping her around, desperately wants children. (He doesn’t.) Worse, she has inherited her mother’s and grandmother’s obsession with the Windsors (Andrea Riseborough, James d’Arcy) and doggedly researches their lives, seeking clues about how to live her own. In extreme moments, Mrs. Simpson actually appears to her.” — David Gritten, The Telegraph The Direction “What an extraordinarily silly, preening, fatally mishandled film this is. It may even surpass 2008’s ‘Filth and Wisdom,’ Madonna’s calamitous first outing as a filmmaker. Her direction is so all over the shop that it barely qualifies as direction at all. ‘W.E.’ gives us slo-mo and jump cuts and a crawling crane shot up a tree in Balmoral, but they are all just tricks without a purpose. For her big directorial flourish, Madonna has Wallis bound onstage to dance with a Masai tribesman while Pretty Vacant blares on the soundtrack. But why? What point is she making?” — Xan Brooks, The Guardian The Writing “The script is the first problem. Co-written with Alek Keshishian, it’s laden with clich
