REVIEW: Sofia Coppola Brings a Delicate Touch, and Sure-Handed Precision, to Somewhere

Some of those who have already written about Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere have categorized it, in a kind of lazy shorthand, as a movie about the “emptiness of celebrity.” But Somewhere is really a Western — a Western without cactuses or rocks or horses, but one that, even so, takes place under a special kind of sunlight found only in L.A., in an environment that’s wild and ruthless under its veneer of civilization. The character of the land means everything in Somewhere : Wide boulevards lined with palm trees make for an illusory endless frontier; giant billboards advertise nothing in particular — they’re big because they can be. This is a place where you can lose your way without even taking a wrong turn, and sure enough, the hero of this particular story is a man who has temporarily lost himself. Still, the city’s beauty — either sitting in plain sight under the sizzling noon sun or semi-hidden in the dusk — is peculiar and specific and alluring. L.A. — and the idea of Hollywood, if not the actual neighborhood — is heartless and fabulous. It’s a place to really be a man — or not.

It’s Time to Protect Gray Wolves From Congress

Photo credit: Sierra Club During this lame duck congressional session or in the next Congress, we are expecting a battle over the gray wolf and its listing as an endangered species . Wolves are being unjustly blamed for killing too many elk in the western U.S. The numbers, however, don’t support this. In Montana, Idaho and Wyoming elk numbers have actually increased 18 percent since wolf reintroduction …. Read the full story on TreeHugger

California Says Yes To Molten Solar

The California Energy Commission has approved a permit for SolarReserve to build a 150-megawatt solar plant that uses molten salt to store energy, the company announced Wednesday. —The Santa Monica, Calif.-based start-up says its Rice Solar Energy Project will be located 30 miles from Blythe, Calif., and when running at full capacity will supply enough energy to power the equivalent of 68,000 homes annually. The project also has a 25-year power purchase agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). ==================== California Says Yes To Molten Solar December 16, 2010 9:44 AM PST by Candace Lombardi http://news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-20025870-54.html?part=rss&tag=feed&sub… —continued—- The molten salt system will enable the solar farm to store and release solar energy so that it can continue to generate electricity for up to eight hours after sunset, according to SolarReserve. Molten salt solar plants, which have been built in Spain by SolarReserve with additional molten solar projects underway in Nevada and Sicily, work by using molten salt to retain and release heat energy. In the case of a molten salt solar plant, heliostats–giant rotating mirrors controlled by computers to best track and reflect sun onto a specific point–reflect sun rays onto a central tower, or a series of pipes, containing a molten salt mixture. The molten salt generally consists of sodium nitrates and potassium. The solar rays heat the liquefied salt to a temperature of up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The steam from the molten salt is then harnessed to power a generator that makes electricity. Afterward, the cooled molten salt is then piped back to the tower to be heated once again. In the case of the proposed Rice Solar Energy Project, the heliostats will be directed to a large central tower using a molten salt system developed by Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. The company received more than $10 million to develop more efficient molten-salt systems, as part of a Department of Energy (DOE) project sponsoring 13 companies with funds. However, this latest California board approval does not mean this project is full steam ahead. The Rice Solar Energy Project still needs to receive approvals from both the Bureau of Land Management and the Western Area Power Administration, according to SolarReserve. added by: twohawks

‘True Grit’ Stars Talk Fave Westerns At Brown-Carpet NYC Premiere

Co-stars Hailee Steinfeld and Barry Pepper reveal their gun-slinging genre favorites to MTV News. By Tom DiChiara Hailee Steinfeld Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage If the 25-degree temperatures, dirt-brown carpet (in lieu of a red one) and lack of Golden Globes nominations dampened spirits at Tuesday night’s “True Grit” premiere at New York’s famed Ziegfeld Theatre, it sure didn’t show. Taking a lesson from the film’s title, stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Barry Pepper and Hailee Steinfeld — as well as a bevy of celebrities, including “Entourage” star Adrian Grenier, musician John Legend and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani — showed true grit in braving the frigid temps to walk the unconventionally colored carpet. (Giuliani was greeted by chants of “Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!”) And the “True Grit” posse chatted jovially with reporters about the film, which marks a return to the Western genre for “No Country for Old Men” directors Joel and Ethan Coen, and tells of a U.S. Marshal (Bridges) and Texas Ranger (Damon) helping a young girl (Steinfeld) track down her father’s killer (Brolin). When asked what sets “True Grit,” which hits theaters December 22, apart from the rest of the Western pack, Pepper had a theory. “So many of them have so many anachronisms that kind of ruin it for me and pull me out of the period, whereas the Coen brothers are so authentic and they have such a precise vision,” he said. “And the dialogue [in ‘True Grit’] is extraordinary, which is plucked straight from the source of Charles Portis’ novel. So, yeah, this one’s a very special one for me.” As for Pepper’s favorite Western of all time, the actor didn’t have to think twice before responding: “I’d say ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.’ It came out in 1966 and it raised the bar for the Western genre beyond belief.” Singer Legend, en route to what he said was his first trip to a movie theater in months, had a bit more trouble pinpointing his list-topping Western. “Oh, I don’t know — let me think about that,” the “Ordinary People” singer said, eventually revealing that he’s a big fan of “that one with Morgan Freeman,” a.k.a. “Unforgiven.” Meanwhile, Steinfeld, the 14-year-old who’s earning raves for her feature-film debut in “True Grit,” admitted that she hadn’t seen many Westerns before signing on for the movie. “Maybe I can get away with ‘True Grit’?” she laughed. We’ll let it slide. Check out everything we’ve got on “True Grit.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

5 major insurers stop selling new child-only health plans

All of these companies paid their CEO millions while they refuse health care to children. INDIANAPOLIS — Several health insurers say they will stop selling new child-only individual insurance policies as they face a health care reform provision that will prevent them from excluding children with potentially costly pre-existing conditions. An insurance industry representative said the decision affects a relatively small population and is being made to keep costs down for all policyholders. But a Georgetown University researcher said some middle-class children could be left vulnerable by the ensuing lack of coverage options. Several provisions of the health care overhaul went into effect Thursday, six months after it was signed into law. One of those could help parents who have struggled to find coverage for children with expensive medical conditions. Under the provision, insurers will not be able to exclude children from coverage because of a pre-existing health condition. This means they will no longer be able to deny coverage or agree to cover the child except for services related to certain conditions. However WellPoint Inc., UnitedHealth Group Inc., Aetna Inc., Cigna Corp. and Humana Inc. — the five largest publicly traded health insurers based on enrollment — all have said recently they will stop selling child-only individual policies, although those children can still get coverage through a family plan in the individual market. Individual insurance is coverage that is not offered through an employer and includes both single and family coverage. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39314403/ns/health-health_care/ added by: elsonwvu

How to Watch the Super Harvest Moon Twilight Show Today

Prepare for the Super Harvest Moon! For the first time in two decades, the Sun will sink as the full Moon rises exactly opposite to it on the day the summer ends, creating in a strange 360-degree twilight show. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, today is the autumnal equinox and a Super Harvest Moon will cross the sky after almost 20 years since the last time it happened. When the Sun starts to set on the Western horizon, a full moon will rise opposite to it on the East, reflecting the light of our home star. Being close to the horizon, the orange Moon will be gigantic thanks to a psychological effect called the Moon illusion. The sky will be illuminated by the Sun and the Moon at the same time, creating a weird 360-degree effect that is rarely seen. You don't need to do anything special to enjoy the show, just get ready for the sunset. Make sure to have a clear view to both East and West. In NYC, the event will happen at 6:54pm. You can check the time in your city here. And as an added bonus, when the summer ends at 11:09pm Eastern Time, Jupiter will appear right next to the Moon. http://gizmodo.com/5645030/watch-the-super-harvest-moon-today added by: pjacobs51
