War for Oil…Obama’s Lust in Afghanistan!

The relationship between fossil fuels and Afghanistan has been written about extensively, just not that much by me. Afghanistan, a landlocked country, has essentially negligible petrochemical resources, but there are vast oil and natural gas fields in Central Asia to the north, notably in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan. Getting those fuels to American, Western European, and even Asian markets requires vast pipelines. http://original.antiwar.com/bock/2009/03/23/afghanistan-all-about-oil/ added by: congoboy

Marc Emery Prosecutor Now Says Legalize Marijuana

In a Seattle Times op-ed Saturday, former US Attorney for the Western District of Washington John McKay defected to the other side. As the federal prosecutor in Seattle, McKay oversaw the indictment and prosecution of Canadian marijuana seed seller and pot advocate Marc Emery, who now sits in an American federal detention facility awaiting the formal handing down of a five-year prison sentence later this year. But while he thinks Emery and most pot-smokers are “idiots,” McKay has come to see the futility of continuing to enforce marijuana prohibition. “As Emery's prosecutor and a former federal law-enforcement official, however, I'm not afraid to say out loud what most of my former colleagues know is true: Our marijuana policy is dangerous and wrong and should be changed through the legislative process to better protect the public safety,” he wrote. Marijuana prohibition “has utterly failed,” McKay concluded. “The demand for marijuana in this country has for decades outpaced the ability of law enforcement to eliminate it,” he declared, ready to throw in the towel. http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/2010/sep/05/marc_emery_prosecutor_now_says_l added by: JackHerer

Libertarian Party protests Facebook censorship of its marijuana legalization ad

~I like how the LP is respectful of property rights, yet uses civil ostracism to plead it's case. “WASHINGTON – The Libertarian Party (LP) is protesting the decision by Facebook to refuse advertisements that advocate for the legalization of marijuana. The LP had been running a highly successful Facebook ad to express its support of marijuana legalization, but Facebook banned the ad about a week after accepting it. A sample of the banned LP ad appears below: In a July 23 email to the LP, a Facebook rep wrote, “We do not allow ads for marijuana or political ads for the promotion of marijuana.” The LP asserts that its ad is not intended to promote marijuana itself, but rather to take a position on the high-profile political question of legalizing marijuana. The issue is particularly relevant now, as a major marijuana legalization measure (Proposition 19) will be on the ballot in California this November. Wes Benedict, Executive Director of the LP, commented, “Whether or not the folks at Facebook like marijuana, we think they should end their ridiculous censorship of our ad, which expresses the Libertarian position on a political issue of interest to many people.” Benedict continued, “We recognize Facebook's right to control their content and censor whoever they want. But we're also exercising our First Amendment right to complain about their bad decision, and to alert other consumers to put pressure on them.” On July 15, Facebook notified the LP that it had accepted the ad. Then, on July 22, Facebook revoked its approval, stating that “The image of this ad is either irrelevant or inappropriate.” Recently, the LP learned that Facebook revoked approval of similar ads from other groups, including Just Say Now and the District of Columbia Patients' Cooperative, claiming that their ads violated Facebook's ban on images of “smoking products.” The LP notes that Facebook's ad guidelines prohibit “advertisements promoting tobacco products,” but that the Libertarian ad does not promote the product itself, and that it is not a tobacco product. Kyle Hartz, the LP's Development & New Media Assistant, said, “Our ad is targeted to people who have indicated that they are interested in the issue of marijuana legalization. It's bizarre that Facebook won't allow us to advertise to the very people who support what we are advocating.” For more information, or to arrange an interview, call LP Executive Director Wes Benedict at 202-333-0008 ext. 222. The LP is America's third-largest political party, founded in 1971. The Libertarian Party stands for free markets and civil liberties. The Government’s New ‘Right’ to Track Your Every Move With GPS

~So they gain even more spy powers on citizens, yet can't find a guy who jumps from cave to cave supposedly…. “Government agents can sneak onto your property in the middle of the night, put a GPS device on the bottom of your car and keep track of everywhere you go. This doesn't violate your Fourth Amendment rights, because you do not have any reasonable expectation of privacy in your own driveway – and no reasonable expectation that the government isn't tracking your movements. That is the bizarre – and scary – rule that now applies in California and eight other Western states. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, which covers this vast jurisdiction, recently decided the government can monitor you in this way virtually anytime it wants – with no need for a search warrant. (See a TIME photoessay on Cannabis Culture.) It is a dangerous decisio……………” http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/08599201315000 added by: shanklinmike

One Benefit of Global Warming: It’s Great For Marine Archaeologists

Canada’s Minister of the Environment, Jim Prentice, is a history buff, with a particular interest in the Investigator , which sank in 1854 after getting stuck in the ice for three years, and was found just last week by Parks Canada archaeologists.. He told the Calgary Herald: “This is one of the most important shipwrecks in Canadian history because Investigator carried Capt. Robert McClure who discovered the western entrance to the Northwest Passage. I’m elated” The archaeologists knew r… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Daniel Radcliffe To Star In ‘The Woman In Black’

‘Harry Potter’ actor will lead cast of thriller based on Susan Hill’s 1983 ghost story. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe Photo: Andrew H. Walker/ Getty Images Although his “Harry Potter” duties are not quite behind him — “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” parts 1 and 2 open, respectively, in November 2010 and July 2011 — superstar Daniel Radcliffe is already lining up work. His post-Potter plans now include three projects that, like “Potter,” are book adaptations, as it was announced on Monday (July 19) that Radcliffe will lead the cast of “The Woman in Black,” based on Susan Hill’s 1983 novel. Radcliffe will also return to Broadway for a revival in spring 2011 of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” (from Shepherd Mead’s 1952 book of the same name) and recently signed on to star in a remake of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” due in 2012 and derived from Erich Maria Remarque’s beloved novel. In “The Woman,” a thriller to be directed by James Watkins (“Eden Lake”), Radcliffe will play a young lawyer named Arthur Kipps who’s dispatched to sort out a recently deceased client’s affairs. He works from her creaky old house and, according to the studio’s press release, soon discovers the nearby town “is held hostage by the ghost of a scorned woman set on vengeance.” While Radcliffe’s upcoming endeavors have the based-on-a-book aspect in common, his lineup is actually very diverse: The young star seems determined to follow up his “Potter” credits with work that will show him to be a serious actor. Barbaric Iranian Practice Continues – Death by Stoning

Twelve Iranian women and three men are on death row awaiting execution by stoning despite an apparent last-minute reprieve for a mother of two who had been facing the horrific sentence after being convicted of adultery. Human rights groups and activists welcomed a wave of international publicity and protests over the case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, 43, who was awaiting execution in the western Iranian town of Tabriz after what her lawyer called an unjust trial and a sham conviction. The Iranian embassy in London said in a statement that “according to information from the relevant judicial authorities” the stoning would not go ahead. If confirmed it would be an victory for a brief but intense campaign that was first highlighted by the Guardian last week. added by: jubal
