Dean Speaks Out Against Obama

This should make any Democrat very nervous. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/07/tax-cut-deal-lament_n_793105.html WASHINGTON — Obama's decision to craft a deal with Republicans on the Bush tax cuts may have been, as administration officials insist, the product of economic and political necessities. But it has created deep reservoirs of distrust with the president's ability to handle high-stakes negotiations and has compelled even former staffers to level blunt criticisms about the White House's politics. “I think the president made a huge mistake in supporting any extension of tax cuts,” said Steve Hildebrand, the deputy national director of Obama's presidential campaign and a strategist who has long grown sour on Washington. “We can't afford it as a country, and we should recognize that. We need his leadership and bipartisan congressional leadership on it. And the whole idea of negotiating with Republicans who won't negotiate in good faith, it is not the direction the president should be taking.” added by: tverdell

PETA Lambasts Hunting, Sarah Palin’s Alaska

In a clash of the media-hungry, supremely unintelligent titans, PETA has a bone to pick with Sarah Palin after the most recent episode of her TLC reality show. A graphic hunting scene, hilariously prefaced by a “Viewer Discretion Advised” warning aired Sunday on Sarah Palin’s Alaska . In it, the ex-gov shot a caribou. Never one to let an opportunity for publicity justice pass, PETA issued a statement condemning the show and the potential White House hopeful starring in it. Sarah doesn’t go hunting. That implies a chance of failure. Sarah goes KILLING . “ Sarah Palin seems to think that resorting to violence and blood and guts may lure people into watching her boring show,” said PETA V.P. Dan Mathews. “But the ratings remain as dead as the poor animals she shoots.” Ooh, that one hurts . Sort of inaccurate though, Dan. The show got 3.5 million viewers Sunday, up from 3 million the previous week. On TLC . It’s a hit. Sarah actually hasn’t commented (give it 30 minutes). But over the weekend on Facebook, she wrote that “unless you’ve never worn leather shoes, sat on a leather couch or eaten a piece of meat, save your condemnation of tonight’s episode.” Here’s the clip that has PETA so up in arms … Sarah Palin Shoots Caribou Team Sarah or Team PETA?

McConnell’s Reality Distortion Field on Tax Cuts

The Republican Senate minority leader has been arguing that the outcome of the midterm elections confers a mandate on Congress to extend the Bush-era tax cuts, which are set to expire Jan. 1. But the bipartisan opposition and an electoral mandate to extend the Bush-era tax cut or block all other legislation is at odds with recent polling of the American public — those whom McConnell and Congress are supposed to represent. A recent CBS News poll indicated that 53 percent of Americans want the Bush-era tax cuts extended only for households earning less than $250,000 per year. Only 26 percent indicated they support extending the tax cuts for all Americans regardless of income level. Among Republicans polled, 41 percent support the White House proposal to extend tax cuts for households earning less than $250,000 and 46 percent support extending all the Bush-era tax cuts. A recent Gallup poll found 44 percent of Americans want to keep the tax cuts but set limits for wealthy Americans, and 40 percent favor maintaining the Bush-era tax cuts for all Americans. A majority in the Gallup poll (57 percent) would set the bar on taxing households at $500,000 rather than $250,000, which is the figure the White House prefers. A majority of Americans believe the tax cuts should be temporary — 45 percent, versus 37 percent who believe the tax cuts should be permanent. In the AP-CNBC poll, 50 percent of Americans were in favor of expiring the Bush-era tax cuts for households earning over $250,000 and 34 percent favor extending the tax cuts for all Americans. Apparently ignoring the signals presented in the polls (which politicians sometimes do), McConnell and 41 other Republican Senators said they would block votes on all legislation, including the nuclear arms reduction START agreement with Russia and an extension of unemployment benefits, unless an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts includes the highest income earners. “Life is a series of choices,” McConnell said in reference to linking a vote on the START treaty to extending all the Bush-era tax cuts. His strategy of holding up legislation, and giving the White House a something-or-nothing “series of choices,” may be working. The White House has said that it is “negotiating” a compromise tax deal in the next few days, which will extend all the Bush-era tax cuts, but not indefinitely. Following the midterm election, McConnell and the GOP have been able to create a reality distortion field surrounding the tax cuts, and the White House and majority of Democrats are about to enter it. added by: TimALoftis

CBS Issues ‘Gridlock Alert,’ Warns That GOP ‘Put A Halt on Cooperating’

At the top of Wednesday's CBS Early Show, fill-in co-host Erica Hill fretted over Republicans pledging to focus solely on economic issues in the lame duck session of Congress: “Gridlock alert. Just one day after promising to work together while meeting with President Obama, GOP leaders may now put a halt on cooperating with Democrats on Capitol Hill. So will Washington find itself at a standstill?” Moments later, co-host Harry Smith lamented how “the spirit of cooperation between Republicans and Democrats after yesterday's White House summit seemed to fade quickly.” In the report that followed, senior White House correspondent Bill Plante solely blamed the GOP for the division: “There are new questions this morning about just how sincere the spirit of cooperation in Washington really is. CBS News has confirmed that Senate Republicans have collected signatures on a letter which pledges to block everything unrelated to tax cuts and spending during the lame duck congress.” read more

Obama to propose two-year pay freeze for federal workers

WASHINGTON — President Obama will announce Monday morning that he wants to freeze pay for federal employees for the next two years, a move the administration says would save more than $5 billion between now and 2012. The freeze would not apply to military personnel but rather to all other civilian employees on the federal payroll. Congress would have to approve the proposal in order for it to take effect. The plan is part of Obama's effort to contain the $1.3 trillion federal deficit, and will be followed by more proposals for spending reductions over the next few months, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said Monday morning. The president's announcement lands as a pre-emptive strike on congressional Republicans, who are preparing a plan to slash federal pay and workforce next year. It comes in advance of a meeting between the Democratic president and GOP leaders at the White House on Tuesday. “Clearly, this is a difficult decision,” said Jeffrey Zients, Obama's chief performance officer and the Office of Management and Budget's deputy director for management. Federal employees are hard-working, he said, and “central to delivering services to the American people. We believe it's the first of many difficult steps ahead … to put our nation on sound fiscal footing.” In other steps aimed at reining in the deficit, Obama has previously frozen salaries for senior White House officials and proposed doing the same for all political appointees across the government. His administration is also working on scouring out what they call “excesses” in federal contracting and on reducing loss through improper payments. Obama has also directed federal agencies to dispose of excess real estate. The president's announcement will come this morning in remarks to the press at the executive office building next to the White House. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/sc-dc-1130-obama-freeze-web-20101… added by: iGoogle

Federal judge may halt ‘Obamacare’ within weeks

WASHINGTON — As the Obama administration presses ahead with the health care law, officials are bracing for the possibility that a federal judge in Virginia will soon reject its central provision as unconstitutional and, in the worst case for the White House, halt its enforcement until higher courts can rule. The judge, Henry E. Hudson of Federal District Court in Richmond, has promised to rule by the end of the year on the constitutionality of the law’s requirement that most Americans obtain insurance, which takes effect in 2014. Although administration officials remain confident that it is constitutionally valid to compel people to obtain health insurance, they also acknowledge that Judge Hudson’s preliminary opinions and comments could presage the first ruling against the law. “He’s asked a number of questions that express skepticism,” said one administration official who is examining whether a ruling against part of the law would undermine other provisions. “We have been trying to think through that set of questions,” said the official, who insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case freely.
