President Barack Obama said on Thursday he was giving a belated U.S. endorsement to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, drawing hearty applause from a gathering of Native Americans. The U.N. declaration recognizes the rights of indigenous groups, like American Indians, in such areas as culture, property and self-determination. The United States was one of a handful of countries to refrain from backing the doctrine in the past, but following a recent review of the government's position, Obama said, “I can announce that the United States is lending its support to this declaration. “The aspirations it affirms — including the respect for the institutions and rich cultures of Native peoples — are ones we must always seek to fulfill,” he said in opening the White House Tribal Nations Conference at the Interior Department. Washington (CNN) — The Senate approved a controversial $858 billion tax cut package Wednesday, overwhelmingly voting to extend the Bush-era tax reductions despite a series of objections from both the left and the right. The measure, which passed 81 to 19, now advances to the House of Representatives. Among other things, the package includes a two-year extension of the Bush-era tax cuts set to expire December 31. It also would extend unemployment benefits for 13 months, cut the payroll tax by 2 percentage points for a year, restore the estate tax at a lower level, and continue a series of other tax breaks. The estate tax — currently scheduled to exempt inheritances up to $1 million and tax amounts above that at a rate of 55% — would be reduced under the tax package to a rate of 35% on amounts above a $5 million individual exemption. The vote came hours after President Barack Obama urged lawmakers Wednesday to approve the deal, which the White House negotiated with Senate GOP leaders. added by: TimALoftis

The Obama administration condemns WikiLeaks in the most extreme terms, with White House spokesman Robert Gibbs referring to the people involved in the leaking and distribution of diplomatic cables as “criminals,” and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton describing the latest WikiLeaks revelations as an ” attack on America's foreign policy interests.” Attorney General Eric Holder talks of using the Espionage Act and other tools to go after WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Democrats in Congress echo the criticisms—with Senate Foreign Relations Committee chair John Kerry ripping Assange for having done “real damage” to US interests—or simply remain silent. Some are openly working with neoconservative Republicans to come up with new laws to restrict the flow of information about US foreign policy, Is anyone in official Washington standing up for transparency?
