Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter Pouts that Obama Has to Clean Up Bush’s Mess

Jonathan Alter of Newsweek once again blamed Bush and the Republicans for creating the mess that Obama is now cleaning up, preventing the President from accomplishing his agendas. Alter, appearing Wednesday on MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown,” called the BP oil spill crisis “the perfect metaphor” for Obama’s presidency so far. “It’s been cleaning up a lot of the messes left to him by his predecessors,” he stated. Alter added that Obama is trying to stop an economic depression “that, you know, began to happen on George Bush’s watch.” “It is a distraction from Obama’s own agenda,” Alter added about the oil spill, “and in that sense, it irritates him.” Not to be outdone, MSNBC anchor Savannah Guthrie chimed in, affirming that the word of the day was “frustration.” “You mentioned frustration, and that’s really the word,” Guthrie opined. “Because you do get the feeling that the President, and certainly his lieutenants over there at the White House, really resent this Washington game that requires the President to emote for public consumption.” As Newsbusters reported Tuesday, Alter has sounded the same criticisms on other cable networks. Appearing on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report Monday, he claimed that Obama had to run “the shovel brigade” at the beginning of his presidential term. “A shovel brigade,” he eloquently explained, “you know, the guys who sweep up after the elephants when the elephants leave their (expletive) all over the circus, right?” As a guest on the Joy Behar Show on HLN that same night, Alter said that Obama is “frustrated,” and is “cleaning up Bush’s messes,” namely Wall Street, the war in Afghanistan, the auto industry mess, and now the BP oil spill crisis. Describing his encounters with President Obama and his Cabinet  inside the White House during his first term, Alter said that “we were all living history. This man prevented another Great Depression.” The transcript of the June 9 segment of The Daily Rundown, which aired at 9:39am EDT, is as follows: CHUCK TODD: You know, watching him deal with a crisis–this is the first big test–what did you learn about him in year one that you sit there and say, ‘Boy, the lesson he learned from this he’s applying to the oil spill’? JOHNATHAN ALTER, NEWSWEEK: Well first of all, the oil spill is the perfect metaphor for Obama’s presidency so far. It’s been cleaning up a lot of the messes left to him by his predecessors, whether it was bank bailouts, auto bailouts, Afghanistan–which turned out to be a much bigger mess than anybody anticipated–preventing a depression that, you know, began to happen on George Bush’s watch. So this is more of the same, and I think they put it in that category, and in that sense, even though they’ve been much more focused on it from the beginning than I think a lot of the public realizes, it is a distraction from Obama’s own agenda–things like health care, education, that he wants to do that are not so-called ‘legacy issues’ for him. And in that sense, it irritates him. You know, you know that he–he’s very disciplined, very focused, does his homework, is on the case, but it’s not what he wants to be dealing with. And I think it’s part of the reality of being president is that you have to deal with the cards that you’re dealt. And that frustrates him. And then I think the other big problem for him in this is that he’s terrific behind closed doors–that’s what I try to do in The Promise, is I try to take you into what he’s like behind closed doors–at stripping out emotion from any of his calculations, right? And that gives him a higher batting average on decisions, if you make them rationally. But he fails to put emotion back into the equation for the public parts of his job. And that’s where he’s struggling on this oil spill. SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: You mentioned frustration, and that’s really the word. Because you do get the feeling that the President, and certainly his lieutenants over there at the White House, really resent this Washington game that requires the president to emote for public consumption. I mean, they really resent everything about Washington that’s expected of them. Just the way the President hates the idea of having to do a sound byte.

White House Pledges $400 Million to Palestinians

A White House statement calls the $400 million aid package announced Wednesday “a down payment on the United States’ commitment to Palestinians in Gaza, who deserve a better life and expanded opportunities, and the chance to take part in building a viable, independent state of Palestine, together with those who live in the West Bank.” The commitment includes money for new schools, infrastructure and repairs throughout the Palestinian territories, but, as the Guardian points out, there’s no mention of how the U.S. plans to get banned construction materials past Israel and Egypt’s blockade of Gaza.

Liberals Mock ‘Hatchet-Faced’ Helen Thomas

Liberals are forgiving of Helen Thomas’s “get the Hell out of Palestine” remarks to the Jews — even the Jews. But they’re still making fun of the lady’s face. On Tuesday, Norman Lear sent in a two-paragraph statement to the Washington Post’s On Faith page that announced: What we all intend, at least what our cultures and religions say we all intend, is good. Among them is forgiveness. As journalist Helen Thomas leaves the national stage after her 50-year run, it’s time to forgive that now ancient hatched-faced [sic] whippersnapper , whose just being there delighted us for so many years. I will never forgive her offensive last words per se, but rest well, Ms. Thomas, on the billions of other words and on the 90 years it took to say them, Mocking Thomas as “ancient” is odd coming from Lear — he’s 87. On her radio show on Tuesday, Randi Rhodes was discussing the adultery allegations against South Carolina GOP gubernatorial nominee Nikki Haley, but ended by mocking Thomas: [S]she is the darling of the tea party. She got Sarah Palin’s endorsement. Um, and people keep popping up saying they’ve had extramarital affairs with her!  And the people who have said that, you know, they’ve had affairs with her run the gamut. You’ve got a blogger, a prominent — prominent — a political blogger; and a lobbyist, both claiming to have had affairs with Nikki Haley, I mean — the fact that she’s attractive makes their claims a little less suspicious. But something tells me that if this woman looked like Helen Thomas, these guys would not be stepping forward to say they had sex with her!  On his radio show on Tuesday, liberal Bill Press was complaining that Thomas was forced out for having an unpopular opinion, and insisted it was a terrible idea to distinguish news media from opinion journalism in the briefing room: I don’t think we want to invite any White House, any administration, to decide where people sit in the press briefing room or who gets in the door based on whether or not they have an opinion, and they express an opinion, even an opinion that we disagree with. And even an opinion that is pretty inflammatory. If you start that, that is a real, real slippery slope. It is a slippery slope, since the “objective” media often decide to avoid the entire concept of objectivity. But the correspondents association is talking about a brighter line than that, where Thomas and folks like Les Kinsolving (who’s a talk-show host, not a reporter) would be moved back in the pecking order. If a press conference is about advancing the news, and not just your personal opinions, then it shouldn’t be that controversial for the “news” people should get first dibs on the questions. Press added later: “I don’t care who the president is, the White House press corps should not be a bunch of pussycats.” As if he really minds the media going soft in the current era.

WH Correspondents Board to Evaluate Seating Rules for Opinion Journalists

Editor’s Note : The following originally appeared at NewsBusters sister site CNSNews.com . The fallout from Helen Thomas’ controversial comments about Israel and Jews, which led to her immediate retirement on Monday, has prompted journalists covering the White House to re-evaluate the role of an opinion columnist in the White House press corps.   Thomas, 89, the so-called dean of the White House press corps, covered the White House as a news reporter for United Press International (UPI), beginning with the Kennedy administration in the early 1960s. In 2000, she left UPI to become an opinion columnist for Hearst Newspapers. She has a front row seat at the White House press gallery with her name on it.   On Friday, June 4, a video surfaced of Thomas saying (on May 27) that Israel should “get the hell out of Palestine” and that the Jews should “go home” to “Poland, Germany,” and to “America and everywhere else.” After initially apologizing for the comment, Thomas announced her immediate retirement on Monday.   The White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) board issued a statement on Monday calling Thomas’ remarks “indefensible,” but the WHCA also said the matter raises legitimate questions going forward.   “[T]he incident does revive the issue of whether it is appropriate for an opinion columnist to have a front row seat in the WH briefing room,” the statement said. “That is an issue under the jurisdiction of this board.”   The WHCA will meet this week “to decide on the seating issue.”   In a separate statement on Thomas’ retirement, the WHCA board said, “Helen Thomas has had a long and distinguished career in journalism that is unrivaled, covering 10 presidents over the past 50 years.   “Along the way, she shattered many glass ceilings, including serving as the first female president of the White House Correspondents’ Association. We are saddened by her recent comments, but we commend her for a trailblazing career, and we wish her the best.”   The WHCA decides what news organizations obtain seating in the White House Brady Press Briefing Room. However, it is the White House Media Affairs office that issues credentials to reporters.   Thomas has been a long-time critic of many of Israel’s policies.   She made her most recent and career-ending comments , during the White House Jewish Heritage celebration on May 27, in an interview with Rabbi David Nesenoff of RabbiLive.com.    Thomas first said of Israelis, “Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine. Remember, these people are occupied and it is their land. Not Germany’s. Not Poland’s.”   The interviewer asked, “Where should they go? What should they do?”   Thomas said, “Go home.”   The interviewer asked, “Where is home?”   Thomas said, “Poland, Germany.”   The interviewer then followed up, “You’re saying Jews should go back to Poland and Germany?”   Thomas answered, “And America and everywhere else.”   The video of the interview surfaced last week. On Friday, June 4, Thomas issued a written apology.   “I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians,” Thomas said. “They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.”   However, Thomas announced she was retiring effective immediately on Monday, June 7.   During Monday’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs condemned Thomas’ remarks.   “I think those remarks were offensive and reprehensible,” Gibbs said. “I think she should and has apologized, because – obviously those remarks do not reflect certainly the opinion of, I assume, most of the people in here, and certainly not of the administration.”   Former George W. Bush Press Secretary Ari Fleischer and former Clinton White House counsel Lanny Davis, both Jewish, publicly called for Thomas to lose her job with Hearst Newspapers or for the WHCA to take away her front row seat.   The correspondents’ association board issued its first statement shortly after news of Thomas’ retirement.   “Helen Thomas’s comments were indefensible and the White House Correspondents Association board firmly dissociates itself from them,” the statement says. “Many in our profession who have known Helen for years were saddened by the comments, which were especially unfortunate in light of her role as a trail blazer on the White House beat.   “While Helen has not been a member of the WHCA for many years, her special status in the briefing room has helped solidify her as the dean of the White House press corps so we feel the need to speak out strongly on this matter,” the statement continued.   “We want to emphasize that the role of the WHCA is to represent the White House press corps in its dealings with the White House on coverage-related issues. We do not police the speech of our members or colleagues. We are not involved at all in issuing White House credentials, that is the purview of the White House itself,” the board added.   “But the incident does revive the issue of whether it is appropriate for an opinion columnist to have a front row seat in the WH briefing room. That is an issue under the jurisdiction of this board,” the statement continued. “We are actively seeking input from our association members on this important matter, and we have scheduled a special meeting of the WHCA board on Thursday to decide on the seating issue.”

Disgraced Journalist Helen Thomas Praised By Terrorist Group Hezbollah

Disgraced journalist Helen Thomas must now be really proud of herself: the terrorist organization Hezbollah has expressed great praise for the recent anti-Semitic comments she made that forced her into retirement. As NewsBusters’ Ken Shepherd reported last Friday, Thomas told a rabbi that Jews living in Israel should “get the hell out of Palestine” and go “home” to Poland or Germany. According to Israel’s Ynet, a representative of Hezbollah issued a statement Wednesday regarding this matter: Hezbollah on Wednesday saluted veteran US reporter Helen Thomas’s “courage” for her controversial comments against Israel, which sparked a furor and forced her to retire. “Respected American journalist Helen Thomas’s answer shows … a courageous, bold, honest and free opinion which expresses what people across the globe believe: that Israel is a racist state of murderers and thugs,” Hezbollah MP Hussein Moussawi said in a statement. I guess this is fitting for a woman who in 2002 reportedly claimed, “Thank God for Hezbollah,” and who in 2006 was cynically thanked by the late Tony Snow for presenting at a White House press briefing “the Hezbollah view.”   As Hot Air’s Allahpundit quipped Wednesday, “How nice that [Hezbollah would] open up and recognize her after her retirement. It’s like the terrorist equivalent of a gold watch.” Indeed.  Most people would be ashamed to be praised by terrorists. Thomas tonight must be feeling like she died and went to heaven.

Open Thread: Big Labor Takes a Hit in Arkansas

Ben Smith says he was contacted by a “senior White House official this morning” regarding union support for Sen. Blanche Lincoln’s opponent in the Arkansas runoff. “Organized labor just flushed $10 million of their members’ money down the toilet on a pointless exercise,” the official said. “If even half that total had been well-targeted and applied in key House races across this country, that could have made a real difference in November.”… Lincoln foe Bill Halter had the unstinting support of the AFL-CIO, SEIU, AFSCME and other major unions. And labor officials Tuesday evening were already working to spin the narrow loss of their candidate, Bill Halter, as a moral victory, but the cost in money and in the goodwill of the White House may be a steep price to pay for a near miss. Lincoln is probably a more electable candidate given her state, so should conservatives be pleased at this turn of events?

Gaza blockade under pressure

There could be concessions from Israel on the Gaza Strip aid blockade, Channel 4 News International Editor Lindsey Hilsum reports from Ashdod, as it faces more international pressure after stopping another aid ship. The Israeli navy diverted the Rachel Corrie – the last of the so-called “freedom flotilla” containing thousands of tonnes of aid for Gaza, as well as activists from Ireland and elsewhere – without incident. The ship, named after the American woman killed in Gaza in 2003, had ignored Israeli orders to divert to Israel's Ashdod port where Israel had offered to unload the cargo and deliver it to Gaza before inspecting it. However, following the Israeli military intervention, it was escorted to Ashdod where the cargo was unloaded and the passengers were put onto buses to the airport to be deported. The Rachel Corrie continued with its mission despite Israeli forces killing nine activists on board a Turkish aid ship on Monday. Lindsey Hilsum, Channel 4 News International Editor, said that Israelis continued to support the blockade, despite the aid crisis in Gaza and international condemnation – although some alterations could be made to what kinds of items are blocked as a result of recent events, she said. “Most Israelis seem to agree with their government that the blockade of Gaza is necessary in order to weaken the Hamas government in Gaza and prevent it from getting weapons,” she said. “But international reaction is now stepping up – with the White House saying that it is unsustainable, it has to change. “But nonethless Israel seems quite determined…they think that if the blockade is lifted, there is a danger of weapons going into Gaza, that at least is what they say. “But I think now there will be new negotiations to change at least what can go in and what can't. There is an Israeli list of goods which are allowed in and which aren't. Rather bizarrely, coriander is not allowed in, ginger however is allowed in.” The humanitarian cargo on board the Rachel Corrie includes: 550,000 kilograms of bagged cement 20,000 Kgs of printing paper 25,000 kgs of school supplies and books 12,000 kgs of toys 150,000 kgs of medical supplies Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement saying: “Forces used the same procedures for Monday's flotilla and Saturday's sailing but was met by a different response. “On today's ship and in five of the six vessels in the previous flotilla, procedure ended without casualties. The only difference was with one ship where extremist Islamic activists, supporters of terrorism, waited for our troops on the deck with axes and knives.” Passengers on board the MV Rachel Corrie include: Mairead Maguire, nobel Peace Laureate and Cofunder of Peace People, Northern Ireland. Dennis Halliday, former UN Assistant Secretary General, nobel peace prize nominee, and winner of the UK Gandhi Peace Prize. Matthias Change Wen chieh, Malaysia barrister and former political secretary to former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohammed. The ship was the latest attempt to break the four-year old blockade imposed on Gaza by Israel, with the stated aim of preventing Gaza's rulers Hamas from building up weapons to attack the Jewish state. It prevents materials such as cement from entering Gaza, which it says could be used for military purposes. The latest incident comes after nine Turkish activists attempting to break the blockade were killed by Israeli military on Monday. The Guardian newspaper reported today that autopsy results showed they had been shot a total of 30 times, many at close range. Five were killed by gunshots to the head, it said. Speaking to Channel 4 News, Chris Gunness, UN Relief and Works Agency spokesman, said that the key issue was that people in Gaza were absolutely desperate for aid. “We have to get aid into Gaza. There is 80% aid dependency and 44% unemployment. Last year 100,000 people came to us because they could not feed their families, this year it was 300,000 so deep poverty has gone up three times,” he said. “There's a crisis in the health service in Gaza, there's a crisis in the education service in Gaza,” he said. “Thousands of five and six year olds can't go to UN schools today because of this illegal blockade, this collective punishment of 1.5 million people, which is why we say lift the sea blockade, lift the land blockade. We know we can do it and do it in a way which adequately accommodates Israel's legitimate security concerns.” He also said that his organisation had been working with Israeli authorities to get cement into Gaza, which showed that it could be done. “If we can do it for two months, we can do it for two years. If we can do it for a few trucks, we can do it for a few tens of thousands of trucks,” he said. International criticism has been heaped on the blockade following the incidents this week, including by Israel's ally the United States. A spokesman for the White House National Security Council said: “We are working urgently with Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and other international partners to develop new procedures for delivering more goods and assistance to Gaza. “The current arrangements are unsustainable and must be changed. For now, we call on all parties to join us in encouraging responsible decisions by all sides to avoid any unnecessary confrontations. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay increased the pressure. “International humanitarian law prohibits starvation of civilians as a method of warfare and … it is also prohibited to impose collective punishment on civilians,” she said. http://therealnews.com/t2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&a… added by: treewolf39
