US and Russia announce deal to cut nuclear weapons

US President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev have agreed a new nuclear arms reduction treaty after months of negotiations. The final agreement came in a phone call between the two leaders. The deal replaces the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which expired in December. It will be signed in Prague on 8 April, the White House said. Both sides agreed to cut their arsenals last year, but disagreements on verification have held up a deal. In a speech in Prague last year Mr Obama set out his vision of moving towards a world without nuclear weapons. The US is said to have more than 2,000 deployed strategic nuclear weapons, while Russia is believed to have more than 2,500. Both sides agreed in July to reduce that number to between 1,500 and 1,675 each. added by: 02

President Obama Cuts Nuclear Deal With Russia: Good or Bad Idea? 4 answers , 0 raves Less than a year after President Barack Obama called for a world without nuclear weapons, the U.S. and Russia have agreed to reduce the number of deployed nukes by more than 25 percent. The White House hopes the agreement, which will pick up where the old Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty left off, will set the stage for more ambitious cuts in the future. After all, the new treaty would still leave 1,600 warheads deployed on each side, with thousands more in storage. http://www.truthdig.com/eartotheground/item/obama_cuts_nuclea… Good Idea to Cut a Deal with Russia 50% (2 answers) Bad Idea to cut a deal with Russia 50% (2 answers)

Biden drops an F-bomb for health care

Our Vice President loves to speak his mind. And overwhelmed with the significance of passing health care reform, he wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to tell the President exactly what he thought about the momentous occasion: “It's a big fucking deal.” Here's the video. I love this moment because it seems so Biden. He tells Obama it's a big deal and that doesn't seem to get through, so he re-emphasizes with an f-bomb. Of course, we at Current have long known how footloose and fancyfree the Vice President can be with his boss. We've been following their relationship through the hard-hitting documentary series with the best access in the free world: “Supernews”. Check out the job fair the two of them hosted, for example, in which the Vice President dressed as a clown and made fun of Canadians! Luckily for Mr. Biden, everyone seems to adore his antics. We certainly do, and it would seem that even the White House Press Secretary is on board. He responded to Biden's newest gaffe/ROFLMAO with this on Twitter: added by: afitzgerald

Jay-Z Visits President Obama At White House

‘I just came from the White House,’ Jay tells crowd at his show in D.C. Wednesday. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z (file) Photo: Chris Gordon/ WireImage Jay-Z took advantage of his time in the Beltway on Wednesday to visit 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. “I just came from the White House,” he told the audience at the Verizon Center on the Washington D.C. leg of his Blueprint 3 tour. According to The Washington Post , Hov made the remark during the last minutes of his concert. Officials confirmed to the Post on Thursday (March 4) that President Barack Obama had indeed met with the Brooklyn MC and the pair chatted briefly. In an interview overseas last month, Jay-Z revealed that when he once called President Obama, he heard BP3 playing in the background . He also told British talk-show host Jonathan Ross he had been invited to the White House by the Obama administration “a couple of times,” but at the time, the witty lyricist hadn’t had a chance to take the president up on the offer. “Hopefully we’ll keep him in for eight years, so I’ll have time to get there” Jay joked. The Roc Nation boss was an avid supporter of Obama during the presidential campaign. He also referred to him in a series of lyrics, most notably for Young Jeezy’s hit “My President,” to which Jay-Z contributed a verse on the remix that premiered during a party that coincided with the president’s inauguration. “Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther could walk/ Martin Luther walked so Barack Obama could run/ Barack Obama ran so all the children could fly,” he raps on the track. “So I’mma spread my wings/ You could meet me in the sky.” “It’s just the progression. … You sat, you walked, you ran, you ran to fly,” he said about his Obama rhyme last year on the eve of the inauguration. “You know, just the progression and how far we’ve come as a nation. It feels good to say that, ’cause I never had that type of feeling to say ‘as a nation,’ like I was part of the American dream. And I believe a lot of people didn’t feel like a part of the American process for so long.” At Wednesday’s show, a fan jumped onstage and was escorted off by Jay’s bodyguard. Related Artists Jay-Z

Obama details plan for uninsured before Healthcare Summit

WASHINGTON — President Obama on Monday laid out for the first time a detailed legislative proposal for overhauling health care. His plan sticks largely to the approach passed by the Senate with unified Democratic support, but it makes concessions to the House version, which was more expensive and would have covered more people. Mr. Obama’s proposal is the opening act to a week of high drama around health care that will culminate on Thursday, when the president convenes Democrats and Republicans at an all-day televised health care “summit” at Blair House. The White House is hoping the session can jump start the stalled health bill. “We view this as the opening bid for the health meeting,” Dan Pfeiffer, Mr. Obama’s communications director, told reporters Monday morning, adding, “We took our best shot at bridging the differences.” The bill is intended to achieve Mr. Obama’s broad goals of expanding coverage to the uninsured while driving down health premiums and imposing what the White House calls “common sense rules of the road” for insurers, including ending the unpopular practice of discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions. The measure is posted on the White House Web site. The White House projects that the bill would extend coverage to 31 million people who are currently uninsured, at a cost over 10 years of $950 billion — more than the $871 billion the Senate would have spent, but less than the $1.05 trillion for the version passed by the House. The administration estimates that its plan would reduce the federal deficit by $100 billion over the next 10 years — and about $1 trillion over the second decade — by cutting spending and reining in waste and fraud.
