Please Stop Giving Racist White Women Adorable Nicknames

I t started out as just another viral video: A white woman named Alison Ettel saw Jordan Rodgers, an African-American girl, selling water near AT&T Park in San Francisco. Rodgers was trying to earn money for a trip to Disneyland. Ettel was caught on camera calling 911 and the video was soon spread across social media. A meme was born . Alison Ettel, CEO of weed dispensary Treatwell Tinctures, calls the police on an 8-year-old girl for selling water. She profits from a drug that put so many people of color behind bars, yet still tries to harm a little black girl. For water. #PermitPatty pic.twitter.com/WJRzfJglhh — Eugene Gu, MD (@eugenegu) June 24, 2018 A few weeks later an Oakland woman called the police on a group of Black people having a cookout. Again, her face was plastered on every social media outlet, photoshopped in different scenarios and even parodied on SNL. She was given the moniker of BBQ Becky . At first, the seemingly weekly moments and memes doubled as mindless comedy combined with ways to shame the white women for their racism. But it’s time to stop it. Because, in the end, these nicknames and memes are only shielding white women from real consequences they should get for putting Black lives in danger. READ MORE: Cornerstone Caroline Investigated For Falsely Accusing Black Child Black people comprise roughly 13 percent of the United States population but make up more than 23 percent of people killed by police. Black men and women have 6.6 to 1 odds of being killed by police while unarmed. Police are more likely to use excessive force on Black people. And so on. So it’s clear that calling the police on a Black person is effectively putting that Black person’s life in danger. Everyone knows this, including the white people who erroneously call police on Black folks. White people who call the police on Black folks don’t just want us removed from their sidewalks or their parks or their cookouts or their neighborhoods. They want us dead. And they know that calling the police on us is going to heighten their chances of those dreams coming to fruition. Take, for instance, the story of Jeremiah Harvey. He was in a New York corner store when his backpack brushed up against a white woman named Teresa Klein. She called the police claiming that the boy groped her. She’s been given the nickname “ Cornerstore Caroline .” How adorable. The problem here is that Harvey calling the police for believing a boy groped her recalls the infamous case of Emmett Till , a boy accused of whistling at a white woman, Carolyn Bryant Donham . She alerted a mob of white men — not that far off from a modern-day police force, depending on whom you ask — who went on to lynch Till. Klein was engaging in a tried and true American tradition of using stereotypes of over-sexualized Black men to aid in the deaths of said Black men. This isn’t an act that should just garner alliterative nicknames and social media memes because that’s letting these perpetrators off the hook. Here’s a question? Without scrolling up, do you even remember Permit Patty’s real name? What about Cornerstone Caroline? Barbecue Becky? Giving them nicknames is providing aliases that cover the names of real women with real racist motivations to commit real harm to real Black people. America has functioned under the premise that white women are innately innocent and harmless in the history of anti-Black violence despite overwhelming historical and present-day evidence to the contrary. Guarding women with nicknames and comedy will surely embarrass them in the short-term, and, in the case of Ettel, she stepped down from her post as a CEO. But do you think she has gone un-hired since? What true recourse has she seen? What true contrition has she been forced to show? Like many others I was disturbed when the news reported #TeresaKlein falsely called the cops on a 9 year old black boy. One of the ways I plan to combat this issue in our community is by introducing Senate Bill S9150 https://t.co/QHatyNGYsm @JeffCMays #CornerstoreCaroline pic.twitter.com/RBZUskS8e0 — Senator Kevin Parker (@SenatorParker) October 13, 2018 There need to be precedents set to make sure these anti-Black violent offenders face more than just a handful of days of embarrassing memes. If there aren’t going to be laws that penalize these people for their calls — something I’m skeptical of, as such a law would be asking police to side with an innocent Black person over a white person, which doesn’t usually garner great outcomes for us — then we have to find ways to hold these white people accountable. So, yes, say their real names as often as possible. Make the world know that anyone who hires them or does business with them is choosing to engage with someone with a clear disregard for Black lives. Whatever you do, leave the cute nicknames for situations that are actually funny, because there’s never any comedy involved when Black boys and girls get police called on them. For Black People, Voting Is Just The Beginning Of The Work

Read this article:

B arack Obama took the stage for his farewell speech mere days after Donald Trump had been elected president of the United States in 2016. The 44th president tried his best to instill hope and faith in his followers who had been dealt a blow of fear and despair. He spoke about civil action and voicing our concerns when the government fails us. At one point, when Obama mentioned the future President Donald Trump, members of the crowd started to boo. His response was short, off-the-cuff and enlightening about the outgoing president’s ideals: “Don’t boo, vote.” This has been Obama’s doctrine for more than a decade, and to be fair, a go-to one-stop solution offered up mostly to minority populations as the ways to initiate change in America. This isn’t new. One of the pillars of the civil rights movement was making sure that African-Americans could secure the right to vote. An incalculable amount of men and women died for that right to cast ballots in elections. My father risked his life fighting for voting rights. I understand the vast importance of the changes that can occur in America if people have a passion for voting. But I also understand that acting like voting is the final solution to the problems poisoning America is an oversimplified dismissal of what Black people have had to endure to simply survive. READ MORE:  Here’s What Millennials Think About Voting For A Black Candidate Having faith in voting is, in effect, having faith in the fairness of America’s so-called democracy. And having faith in America’s so-called democracy is an act of naïveté and self-sabotage. American politics doesn’t act on fairness. It never has, and as soon as Black people secured the right to vote, the country worked overtime to find ways to take those rights away, either by stripping that right via mass incarceration or straight-up changing rules to nullify the impacts of Black votes. In short, the war against Black voting rights never ended and the weeks and days leading up to the 2018 midterms is a testament to how much this country – namely the GOP – wants to make Black voting ineffective. In Georgia, for instance, Republican Secretary Of State and GOP candidate for governor, Brian Kemp, has purged 53,000 names from voter registration lists – more than 70 percent of those were African-American despite the fact the state is a little more than 30 percent Black. Since 2014, the state has shut down 214 polling places, mostly in predominately Black counties. Florida is suppressing more than half a million voters . A study from the Brennan Center For Justice found that New York, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida have engaged in illegal purges, while Arizona, Alabama, Maine and Indiana have put rules on the books that violate the Civil Rights Act in order to suppress votes. Officials at polling places no longer have to make potential voters ask how many bubbles are on a bar of soap anymore as policies achieving the same purpose are now baked into official laws across the country. But what happens if we do actually get to cast a ballot on Election Day? American policy has failsafes in place to minimize the impact of Black votes. The electoral college was instituted as a compromise to give southern states heightened voting power to account for their population of slaves. That same electoral college allowed the last two Republican presidential candidates to ascend to the White House despite the fact they didn’t win the popular vote. The Senate, which allocates two votes per state, dilutes popular votes, as well. By 2040 , two-thirds of the Senate will represent a mere 30 percent of the U.S. population. Think about this: Due to the population differences between Alaska and California and the fact they each still get the same amount of Senate representatives, a Senate vote in Alaska is worth more than 50 times a vote in California. READ MORE:  Kavanaugh Brings His Voter Suppression Record To A Court That Just Upheld A State’s ID Law Voting is a vastly important method of changing the country when we are dissatisfied with those in charge. However, the narrative around voting needs to change. Black people, for the most part, don’t pass on voting because they are lazy or complacent. Voting numbers are rarely if ever a reflection of how much Black people care. On the contrary, voting numbers are reflections of the continued effort to suppress Black people’s rights to have a say in what happens in regards to American policy. Every Black vote is a testament to perseverance and overcoming a system that doesn’t want us stepping foot in voting booths. Every missed Black vote is a reflection of the country succeeding in suppression. When Obama admonished to “don’t boo, vote,” he was displaying the faith he has in America – the same faith that got him elected and the same faith that kept him from believing Donald Trump could be president until it was too late. However, “just” voting isn’t enough. Don’t boo, vote. Don’t boo, resist. Don’t boo, march. Don’t boo, speak up. Don’t boo, live. This is how we survive in America. ‘SNL’ Spoofs Kanye’s Kooky Lunch Meeting With Trump [Video]

Image via Oliver Contreras – Pool/Getty Images “Saturday Night Live” Spoofs Kanye’s White House Trump Meeting “Saturday Night Live” took a moment to call out Kanye for his wacky White House meeting this week. The sketch comedy show once again had Alec Baldwin play Trump while Chris Redd played an exceptionally kooky Kanye. A C-Span introduction noted that the two discussed prison reform, education, alternate universes and flying cars before “Trump” introduced Kanye and downed rumors that this was a publicity stunt. Baldwin: “Thank you all for joining us today for this important discussion. It’s in no way a publicity stunt. This is a serious, private conversation between three friends, plus 50 reporters with cameras.” Redd: “Yeah, that’s right. I flew here using the power of this hat.” Baldwin: “And Kanye, I want to thank you for giving me a pair of your sneakers. They’re perfect for me because they’re white, they’re wide, and they’re never going to be worth as much as you say they are. I’m sure that Kanye wants to make one or two brief, lucid remarks. Redd: “First, let me begin with the idea that time is a myth, infinite amounts universe, and I’m a prisoner in a different dimension. Have I lost anyone so far?” Lie and say they didn’t get it DEAD ON. We’re sure Cheeto and his “son” have seen this by now and they’re probably pissed. See more from last night’s SNL on the flip.

Black Girl Magic: Simone Biles Calls Out The New Head of USA Gymnastics After Her Anti-Nike Tweet

Ouzounova/Splash News Simone Biles Goes In On USA Gymnastics’ Interim President Simone Biles ain’t playing no games! The Olympic gold medalist let it all out on Twitter this week, criticizing USA Gymnastics’ decision to appoint Mary Bono as interim president and chief executive officer on Saturday. Biles shared her disapproval with USA Gymnastics’ decision via her Twitter page, resurfacing an anti-Nike tweet that Bono proudly posted last month. In the now-deleted Tweet, Bono posted a photo of her blacking out a Nike logo in the wake of the company’s advertising endorsement of Colin Kaepernick–she was given Nike shoes at a golfing event but decided to cover over the white swoosh with a black sharpie. Innovative. Biles retweeted the statement along with her explicit disapproval of new Bono’s appointment, writing, “*mouth drop* don’t worry, it’s not like we needed a smarter usa gymnastics president or any sponsors or anything.” Unsurprisingly, Bono also tweeted out #BoycottNike during the company’s campaign. In case you’re unfamiliar, Nike is a huge  sponsor  of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Bono is a former US Congresswoman and spent 15 years in the legislature until 2013. She won her first term during a special election to fill the vacant seat of her deceased husband, pop star and legislator Sonny Bono. Following that, she was most recently working at a consulting firm in Washington D.C. The Olympic organization is going to keep Bono as their acting president until they find a permanent replacement for Kerry Perry. After deleting the initial anti-Nike Tweet, Bono released an apology saying the following: “I deeply regret posting the tweet because I respect everyone’s views and their fundamental right to express them,” she said in a statement released by U.S.A. Gymnastics. “This in no way reflects how I will approach my position at U.S.A. Gymnastics. I will do everything I can to help change the culture and to work with the entire community to build an open, safe and positive environment.” I regret the post and respect everyone’s views & fundamental right to express them. This doesn’t reflect how I will approach my position @USAGym I will do everything I can to help build, w/ the community, an open, safe & positive environment. — Mary Bono (@MaryBonoUSA) October 14, 2018
