Richest lawmakers grew wealthier as economy faltered

The rest of the country is still struggling with high unemployment amid a sluggish-at-best economic recovery — but the wealthiest members of Congress are in high cotton. Indeed, the top 50 wealthiest lawmakers saw their combined net worths increase last year, according to the Hill's annual analysis of financial disclosure documents. Combined, the 50 lawmakers were worth $1.4 billion in 2009 — an $85.1 million increase over their 2008 total — the Hill reports. The members' total combined assets depreciated by nearly $36 million last year — but Congress' well-to-do set also reduced their debts by a combined $120 million. The list of 50 lawmakers spans both parties (27 Democrats and 23 Republicans) and both chambers of Congress (30 House members, 20 senators), the Hill reports. Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts topped the list for the second year in a row; Republican Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas made his debut in the top 10. Here are profiles for the 10 most flush Hill power-and-money brokers: 1. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.): $188.6 million. Kerry's worth, which grew by $20 million in 2009, stems from his wife's assets. Teresa Heinz Kerry, of the Heinz ketchup family, inherited hundreds of millions upon the death of her previous husband, Sen. John Heinz. 2. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.): $160.1 million. Issa actually saw his minimum net worth drop by $4 million, partly due to the poor performance of a single investment fund. Issa's fortune stems from investments he and his wife made in the electronics market. Their company eventually became the largest producer of car anti-theft devices in the country. They sold the business in 2000. 3. Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.): $152.3 million. Harman is married to audio-equipment mogul Sidney Harman; stock holdings from his company, Harman International Industries, helped Harman's net worth grow by $40 million last year. Sidney Harman is in the process of purchasing Newsweek; the magazine's massive debts will presumably drag down Harman's 2010 disclosure numbers a bit. 4. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WVa.): $83.7 million. No surprise here: The Rockefeller family name has for generations been a byword for fabulous riches. (Rockefeller's great-grandfather John Rockefeller was an oil magnate; inflation-adjusted figures still peg the founder of the Rockefeller fortune as the wealthiest man in history.) But the senator's uptick in personal wealth last year came mainly from his wife's investments. 5. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas): $73.8 million. McCaul saw his net worth double last year, mostly owing to stocks held by his wife. McCaul's father-in-law founded the radio empire Clear Channel Communications. 6. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.): $70.2 million. Warner made millions through investments in the cell phone industry, including the Nextel company. 7. Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.): $56.5 million. Before his 2008 election to Congress, Polis made a fortune in online enterprises, transforming his family's greeting card company into BlueMountain.com and founding ProFlowers.com. 8. Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.): $53.5 million. Buchanan grew wealthy as the owner of multiple auto dealerships in Florida. 9. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.): $49.7 million. Lautenberg co-founded a payroll services company in the 1950s that became one of the industry's global leaders. 10. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.): $46.1 million. Most of the California lawmaker's wealth comes from real-estate holdings and investments made by her husband. T.I. And Tiny Arrested For Alleged Drug Possession In Los Angeles

Rapper and his wife were booked for felony alleged possession of a controlled substance Wednesday night. By Gil Kaufman T.I. and Tameka Cottle Photo: Getty Images Rapper T.I. and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle were arrested in Los Angeles on Wednesday night for alleged possession of a controlled substance. According to an arrest report on the incident from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, during the course of a traffic stop involving Tip (born Clifford Harris Jr.), 29, and Cottle, 36, on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood at 10:30 p.m., “deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle.” A narcotics investigation followed and both Tiny and T.I. were “found to be in possession of a controlled substance.” At press time, there was no information on which drug the possession charge covered. TMZ reported that the recently married couple were traveling in a Maybach when they were stopped by deputies. Both T.I. and Tiny were booked at the West Hollywood sheriff’s station on charges of felony possession of a controlled substance, and bail was set at $10,000 each. Deputy Jeff Gordon confirmed on Thursday morning (September 2) that both had posted bail around 4 a.m. PT and were due back in court on the charges on September 3. A spokesperson for T.I.’s label could not be reached for comment early Thursday morning. Tip, who celebrated the #1 debut of his film “Takers” last weekend, is on federal probation following a seven-month prison term he completed in March on weapons charges. At press time, Gordon said considering T.I. was allowed to post bail on the drug charge, it did not appear that the rapper’s probation from the federal charge would be impacted by Wednesday night’s arrest. ‘My Soul To Take’ Uses 3-D ‘Subtly,’ Wes Craven Says

‘You can experience it the way you experience the rest of your life in 3-D,’ writer/director tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Wes Craven Photo: Getty Images Buzz has steadily been building around Wes Craven’s upcoming horror thriller “My Soul to Take.” The film, which opens October 8, marks the first writer/director efforts from the beloved genre director since his segment in 2006’s “Paris je t’aime.” When MTV News caught up with Craven during a brief-yet-miraculous window of downtime recently — he’s currently in the middle of shooting “Scream 4” — he revealed his unique inspiration for “My Soul to Take,” why it’s more than “Stand by Me” with a knife, and how his use of post-production 3-D conversion differs from the way in which other films have used it. MTV : It’s been a while since you’ve written and directed a film. How did that come about? Wes Craven : I guess it was just the happy circumstance of having a conversation with [executive producer] Andrew Rona, who at that time was running Rogue Pictures, and him saying “Got any ideas? I’d love to do another picture with you,” and I had just had an idea, and so I pitched him over coffee, and he gave me a green light for the script, and off we went. MTV : How and when did the inspiration for the story strike you? Craven : I know exactly when it came; I have no idea what inspired it. Sometimes I have these strange thoughts I’m almost embarrassed to say I have, but I was thinking about what it would be like to be a man — maybe it was because I was afraid I was enjoying too much happiness in my life — but I was thinking what it would be like to be a man who is leading a normal life at the time a series of serial killings taking place in the area where he and his wife live. … He discovers in his workshop a hiding place. He stumbles upon the tools of a serial killer that fit the description on TV that the police had captured in a security-camera recording, and he realizes that he is the killer and had a hidden personality. It sort of began there. MTV : It seems like the trailer does a great job of setting up the story without spoiling anything. Craven : It’s a great trailer. We were very happy. I kept saying it’s kind of “Stand by Me” with a knife. It’s not really a grisly gore-fest in any way. It’s as much a family story and coming-of-age story as anything else, but it does have murders in it and it does take place among 16-year-olds, so it does fall into that genre. But I really tried to reinvent that genre by doing something that had a humanistic story to it and kind of a psychological and even spiritual story to it, so depending on how you look at it, it’s either a story about personality or about souls. MTV : The cast is relatively unknown and young. What do you enjoy about working with younger, lesser-known actors? Craven : The truth of the matter is that, at that age, there are very few actors who are seasoned or well-known. Some of these actors had worked, or at least one had worked in Disney films. These were all of their first starring roles. I really enjoy working with young kids. They have great spirit and energy and are just kind of beautiful to watch and direct. I guess if I could have, I would have worked with really experienced actors so I wouldn’t have had to be kind of a schoolteacher too, but they gave great performances. I’m delighted with the way they delivered onscreen. MTV : When you say schoolteacher, do you mean telling them to be quiet and get to work? Craven : It’s more just teaching them the technical stuff of acting, hitting your marks, finding your light and saying things so they’re pronounced enough so people can understand what you’re saying. Most teenagers kind of mumble and say things too fast for most people to understand. It’s just the minor things like that, but it’s actually a pleasure to be helping pass on the craft a bit. … I directed Johnny Depp in his first film [“A Nightmare on Elm Street”], and I look back and say, “Wow, I’m really happy to be part of that gift to the world that he is.” MTV : Is this a standalone film, or is there potential for sequels? Craven : I would say that I certainly did not design it to be that, but it does have an element to it that actually could make it as easily a franchise as the “Scream” franchise, where you have different killers in each film. The central character, I think, would be very interesting to follow through a few more films, but it depends on how the film does. MTV : What can you say about the 3-D conversion? Craven : It was not shot in 3-D, but the studio offered to do that, and I thought it would be interesting to explore — not as the gimmicky 3-D of some films, but to use it as a natural enhancement. You can experience it the way you experience the rest of your life in 3-D. … For a narrative film, rather than spears coming at you in your face in the theater, [we used it] subtly to warp reality for a character that has schizophrenia or some of the kids when they’re going through their extreme events, breaking those forward from the screen rather than keeping them at the screen or behind the screen and yet doing them in a subtle way so the audience won’t be aware we’re doing it. We’re able to manipulate the mind in a way we weren’t able to before. I’m quite fascinated by it. We might be one of the first films to treat it that way. … It’s not a film that puts it in your face. You’ll be aware, but in general, it’s using it very, very subtly. … It’s been a very interesting education for me. From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Do fictional shows need disclaimers? Or have we gone warning crazy?

Actress Kathryn Joosten, a lung cancer survivor, recently suggested that Mad Men producers should be including a disclaimer on the show saying that smoking is hazardous to your health. Aside from smoking, there are plenty of other ill-advised decisions made by the characters on the show. Should we include warnings for those as well? Perhaps one against false identities or cheating on your wife? In this day and age, is the fact that smoking causes cancer something that we need to be reminded of? Or should we assume viewers recognize that the behavior depicted in the show is a reflection of a different time and place, where we didn’t have the information we do now? added by: sgwhites

The Freebie Trailer: Dax Shepard Has a Sexual Itch He Can’t Scratch

Humpday isn’t exactly the sort of movie that spawns a franchise, but here’s the closest thing: The Freebie , about a similar kind of mumblecore couple in comically sexual crisis. It’s even directed by — and starring — Katie Aselton, the wife of Humpday star Mark Duplass.

Mariah Carey Addresses Pregnancy Rumors

‘When the time is right, everyone will know,’ Carey says on her website. By Jocelyn Vena Mariah Carey Photo: Charley Gallay/Getty Images Mariah Carey is finally addressing all those pregnancy rumors. However, the singer won’t exactly confirm or deny whether she is expecting a bundle of joy. The rumors have been following the singer around since late spring when she dropped out of Tyler Perry’s forthcoming movie “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf” and were sparked again this week when Carey was seen at a show in Barretos, Brazil , looking pregnant. “I appreciate everyone’s well wishes. But I am very superstitious,” she wrote on her website on Wednesday (August 26), Usmagazine.com reports. “When the time is right, everyone will know — even Cindi Berger [my publicist].” While she might be keeping tight-lipped about the rumors, the celebrity website further reports that Carey was seen wearing maternity clothes, specifically a $140 Pea in the Pod spaghetti-strap halter maternity dress, in Brazil last weekend. Much in the same vein as his wife, Nick Cannon has remained mum on the subject, playing coy when addressing the rumors on his radio show earlier this week. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it time and time again — when my wife feels like talking about whatever she wants to talk about, you will hear it directly from her,” he said. “We all know it’s extremely personal, and it is for a woman to deal with things with her body, and especially when dealing with the idea of childbirth and all that stuff. “That’s something you want to keep near and dear and as close to you as you possibly can, until you’re 100 percent sure, in any situation,” he continued. “There’s a certain time limit you’re supposed to wait before you can actually officially say that you are and all that stuff. You don’t want to mislead anybody.” Related Photos Mariah Carey On Tour Related Artists Mariah Carey

Howard Stern’s Wife’s Naughty Pic of the Day

This was sent in by my good friend I’ve never spoke to or hung out with or even met named Chris. He sent in this picture Beth Stern sent to Howard Stern a few weeks ago, only to be put on his website, cuz that’s what you do when you have hot pussy for a wife and you look like Howard Stern, in a kind of revenge to all the people who teased him, kinda way, especially when your wife is a fame whore who likes being seen sexually by the public to compete with all the other bitches he gets on his show for his attention, you know to keep the interest alive….cuz he gives her the seriously good life… Something I’ve been unable to do with this site, cuz traffic is dying more and more each day. Advertisers are non-existant. The end is near…But I’ll sink with the ship….

Selena Gomez’s ‘A Year Without Rain’ Video Premieres September 3

Clip debuts on Disney Channel same day as Demi Lovato/ Jonas Brothers’ ‘Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.’ By Jocelyn Vena Selena Gomez Photo: Kevin Parry/WireImage Demi Lovato may not be singing on Selena Gomez’s forthcoming A Year Without Rain album, set for release on September 21, but fans can look forward to a new video from the singer. Gomez announced that the video for the album’s second single, “A Year Without Rain,” will premiere on the Disney Channel on Friday, September 3, the same day that the Jonas Brothers and Lovato’s “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” debuts on the network. Gomez made the announcement on her Facebook page. Earlier this summer, she released the track “Round & Round” as the album’s first single. The deluxe edition of the album will feature additional material, including three extra songs as well as music videos and behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the “A Year Without Rain” music video. It will also give fans a look at what life was like for Gomez during her European tour. Gomez, whose show “Wizards of Waverly Place” just won an Emmy award , has said that the album will show a growth in her sound. And rumor has it that Miley Cyrus (reportedly on the track “Off the Chain”) and Katy Perry (on the song “Rock God”) will appear on the album. “[‘A Year Without Rain’ is] basically one of my favorite songs on the record. [The album’s] kind of got a more feel-good dance beat and feel. I love it. It’s different. [It] kind of shows my growth in my music,” she said. “There’s a song called ‘Intuition’ that’s one of my favorites. The message is basically, every decision that you regret or second-guess, [just] do it [anyway]. I love that message so much.” Related Artists Selena Gomez
