98 Degrees Reuniting For MixTape Festival Because ‘It Just Felt Right’

‘We all miss the rush of being onstage together,’ Nick Lachey tells Ryan Seacrest. By Jocelyn Vena 98 Degrees Photo: Back in April, Nick Lachey had the message “#neversaynever” for his fans after he shot down rumors that 98 Degrees would be hitting the road this summer. The excitement over a possible 98 Degrees reunion began to spread in late March after the band’s website was spruced up, leading fans to speculate that something greater was coming. Now, a few months later, the rumors seem to finally be coming true — in part, at least. The band just announced they will be reuniting for one show this summer. On Wednesday, Nick Lachey opened up to Ryan Seacrest about their plans to take the stage at the MixTape Festival in Hershey, Pennsylvania, in August. “I think we’ve all been lucky in the 11 years since we last performed together to go on and do stuff individually. Drew [Lachey] was the winner of ‘Dancing With the Stars’ season 2, and I’ve gone and done some solo stuff. But there really is nothing like coming together as a unit, as a group, as a band, on the stage, and I think we all miss that. We all miss the rush of being onstage together, performing together, and certainly the fans have kind of been clamoring for it, so it just felt right,” he said. “We always said we were not broken up, we were just taking a break, and now it just seemed like the right time to put everything back together.” He also clarified his previous declaration that the band would not be getting together at all, despite the original spate of rumors. “I didn’t say we weren’t going to do it, but there was some speculation about a full tour happening this summer and our fans have been kind of eager to see us get back together,” he said. “I just wanted to make sure that they understood that a full tour wasn’t happening this summer, but obviously [I’m] very excited to announce that we’re doing this big festival in Hershey in August. So that will be our one and only appearance.” While brother Drew notes that they would have to be able to shuffle around their schedules in the right way to make dates outside of the MixTape Festival work, he added that this particular date felt like the right event to test out the waters for something bigger in the future. “We’re very excited about the opportunity, and we’ve been toying around with the idea for a couple years of ‘if we got back together, when would be the right scenario?’ ” he said. “And this music festival right here just kind of seemed like the right time to get back together and do a show and kick the tires and see how it feels.” Other boy bands on the lineup for the MixTape Festival include the Wanted, New Kids on the Block and New Kids/ Backstreet Boys mega-band NKOTBSB. ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ Teaser Trailer: Meet The New Vampires

Latest peek at the saga’s finale offers up first looks at newbies Lee Pace, Rami Malek and more. By Amy Wilkinson Vampires in “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” Photo: Jacob Black may have said it best: “A lot of red eyes around here.” The latest teaser trailer for ” The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 ” hit the Web Wednesday (June 20), and it’s brimming with a bounty of new bloodsuckers descending upon Forks to defend the Cullen clan (including newborn Renesmee) against the villainous Volturi. Let’s take a closer look at the saga’s fresh blood. Maggie Grace as Irina OK, this isn’t exactly our first glimpse of the Denali coven member, as she made a brief appearance at Bella and Edward’s nuptials during “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” But her role in the series finale is profound enough to warrant a mention. You see, it’s Irina who tells the Volturi that the Cullens have supposedly created an immortal child — the result of biting a youngster, freezing them in a perpetual adolescence. Of course, we know that Renesmee is a rare vampire-human hybrid, having been conceived by Bella and Edward. The Volturi don’t know that, though, so they set off to exact punishment for the high crime. Lee Pace as Garrett No, that isn’t Mark Wahlberg reprising his “Rock Star” role, it’s “Pushing Daisies” actor Lee Pace looking all kinds of scruffy as nomadic vampire Garrett. (No room for a blow-dryer on the road, I guess!) Unlike many of the assembled immortals, Garrett doesn’t have a special talent — except maybe fortitude, as his ability to endure fellow vampire Kate’s powers stops her from attacking the Volturi and inciting a blood bath. In the trailer, it looks as though Garrett may have already aligned himself with the Denali coven before the events of “Breaking Dawn,” which would be a departure from Stephenie Meyer’s source material. Rami Malek as Benjamin One of the more intriguing moments from the latest look is Benjamin’s rather damp display of talent. The Egyptian coven member can control the elements and does so in grand fashion, bending a swath of water to his will. Like Bella, Benjamin spends a great deal of time during “Part 2” practicing and harnessing his abilities for use against the Volturi. Joe Anderson as Alistair The blond bloodsucker you see sparingly throughout the trailer is English vamp Alistair, a longtime friend of Carlisle Cullen. Alistair spends most of his time sulking in the attic and disappears before the Volturi arrive. Seeing as he gets a few good looks here, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think he might stick around for the final face-off in this iteration. Judith Shekoni as Zafrina and Tracey Heggins as Senna Zafrina and Senna, along with maker Kachiri, comprise the Amazon coven. Zafrina boasts the ability to create vivid illusions and spends time entertaining Renesmee with her mental images. But it’s Kachiri (not seen in the trailer) who helps Alice and Jasper track down important immortal-children evidence to present to the Volturi in the Cullens’ defense. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” hits theaters November 16. Katy Perry Calls ‘Wide Awake’ A ‘Dose Of Reality’

Singer debuts music video for her ‘Part of Me 3-D’ track and sits down for an exclusive interview with MTV.com. By Amy Wilkinson, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry Photo: Katy Perry — consummate California Gurl and queen of cotton-candy pop — has a dark side, and she’s revealing it in her latest music video, for “Wide Awake.” The chanteuse stopped by MTV News on Monday (June 18) to debut the clip for her “Katy Perry: Part of Me” track (the song was written specifically for her upcoming 3-D concert movie), in addition to sitting down for a wide-ranging 30-minute interview with Sway Calloway on MTV.com. Of course, Perry’s litter of KatyCats had plenty of questions for the singer, and she was more than happy to oblige. Madeline from Michigan asked via video what Perry wanted fans to feel while listening to her latest hit. “Well, this song, I have a lot of different emotions and feelings in all of my songs,” Perry revealed. “This song in particular is a dose of reality. It’s kind of like coming down from a high. You’ve been on cloud nine for so long, and it can’t always be so sweet and sometimes you need to realize that, and you have to pick yourself up and move forward and face the facts of life and know that this is just a lesson you learn and you’re stronger because of it.” The video opens with Perry wrapping production on her earlier Snoop Dogg collaboration, “California Gurls.” We see her retreat to her dressing room, where she removes her candy-colored wig and is suddenly transported into a sort of gothic fairy tale, where she’s left to navigate a dizzying maze alongside her younger self. It’s a bit of a departure for the Teenage Dream songstress, but not a surprising one considering the year she’s had, including her divorce from comedian Russell Brand , whom she was married to for more than a year. Yet, as the video concludes, Perry emerges from the labyrinth unscathed and without the help of Prince Charming (in fact, she punches him out), and it’s clear Katy is going to be all right on her own. “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” the 3-D concert movie, hits theaters July 5. ‘Rock Of Ages’: Behind The Star-Studded Cameos

Director Adam Shankman explains how ’80s icons like Sebastian Bach and Debbie Gibson ended up in the movie musical. By Amy Wilkinson Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta in “Rock of Ages” Photo: The ’80s are alive and well in director Adam Shankman’s movie musical ” Rock of Ages ,” which shimmied into theaters Friday (June 15). Based on the hit Broadway production of the same name, the flick follows would-be musician Drew Boley (Diego Boneta) as he falls for new-in-town Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) and lands his big break opening for rock legend Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) at the famed Bourbon Room. The soundtrack is stuffed with the era’s biggest hits like “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” and “I Want to Know What Love Is,” but the toe-tapping tunes aren’t the only throwbacks to the decade of decadence. Pay close attention and you’ll spot a number of ’80s music mavens. A major plotline in the film centers around conservative advocate Patricia Whitmore’s (Catherine Zeta-Jones) attempt to shutter the Bourbon Room and reclaim the Sunset Strip for more wholesome pursuits. The struggle reaches its climax in a rocking protest outside the club with Patricia and company facing off against club employee Lonny (Russell Brand) while singing a mash-up of “We Built This City” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” It’s here among the assembled masses that you’ll recognize a few familiar faces, like Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach and Debbie Gibson. But how did the cameos come to be? “I had said if anyone from the period wants to participate, there is a scene I’m happy to accommodate, ’cause it just felt right. … So the studio just kind of put out the word, and that’s what happened,” Shankman said. “I would get the phone call the day before going, ‘This is who’s coming tomorrow,’ and I’m like, ‘Seriously?!’ ” Having a bevy of rock stars on a single set might sound like a nightmare of warring egos and AquaNet, but in fact, Shankman said the stars sang for their supper, staging an impromptu concert. “The greatest part of having those guys — [REO Speedwagon’s] Kevin Cronin, [Extreme’s] Nuno Bettencourt and Sebastian — all of them, our lunch that night was at 3:30 in the morning, and during lunch for the whole crew, they did a whole concert, and they sang all the songs.” Now that’s a scene we want to see on the DVD bonus reel! ‘Rock Of Ages’ Star Recalls ‘Jamming’ With Tom Cruise

‘It was pretty surreal jamming out with Tom singing ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn,’ ‘ Diego Boneta tells MTV News of their joint guitar lessons. By Amy Wilkinson Tom Cruise in “Rock of Ages” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures For his breakout role in the movie adaptation of the Broadway hit ” Rock of Ages ,” Diego Boneta could not have asked for a bigger — or better — co-star than Hollywood vet Tom Cruise . “He’s the hardest-working guy we’ve ever met in our lives,” Boneta said, speaking for himself and co-star Julianne Hough. “He’s so humble. I think that combination is something that really stuck with me. This is my first movie; this is Tom’s, like, 50th movie. That is a rare and very special combination.” In the film, Boneta plays aspiring musician Drew Boley, a barback at the Sunset Strip’s Bourbon Room, where Cruise’s rock god Stacee Jaxx is set to perform his band’s final show before embarking on a solo career. The role took months of preparation for the 21-year-old and his seasoned co-star, and despite their varied experience in the industry, both had to start at the beginning when it came to mastering the fundamentals of rock and roll. “Tom and I were taking guitar classes together because we both had to learn how to play guitar, and it was pretty surreal jamming out with Tom singing ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn,’ ” Boneta recalled. “He was playing the solo, and I was playing all the chords and stuff.” Though this is Boneta’s first film role, he may be familiar to TV audiences from appearances on teen favorites “90210” and “Pretty Little Liars.” Next up, the actor will star in the new MTV series “Underemployed.” “Rock of Ages,” which also stars Russell Brand, Malin Akerman and Catherine Zeta-Jones, hits theaters June 15.
