Brittany Maynard and Dan Diaz celerated their first two Christmases together joyfully. Tragically, they never got to see a third as she passed away this fall. Having become the face of the controversial right-to-die movement, Brittany Maynard ended her life at age 29 with medication prescribed by a doctor. Maynard had terminal brain cancer and moved to Oregon with her mother, stepfather and husband last June to gain access to the state’s Death with Dignity Act. That law, which is extremely polarizing, allows terminally ill people meeting specific criteria to take fatal doses of barbiturates prescribed to them by a doctor. In October, she launched a video campaign with Compassion & Choices, an end-of-life choice advocacy organization, to fight for national access to such laws. “There is not a cell in my body that is suicidal or that wants to die,” she said then, less than a month before she passed away voluntarily. “I want to live.” “I wish there was a cure for my disease but there’s not,” she added, lamenting her condition. “My glioblastoma is going to kill me and that’s out of my control.” “I’ve discussed with many experts how I would die from it and it’s a terrible, terrible way to die. Being able to choose to go with dignity is less terrifying.” Husband Diaz and Brittany’s mother, Debbie Ziegler, shared her feelings and memories about her daughter’s medical journey and decision to die with dignity. “What made Brittany the bravest and most intelligent woman I’ve ever known,” she wrote of her late daughter, is what drove her to this difficult choice. “This ability to decide to live, to decide to notice beauty, to decide to be the most that she could be and then go before everything that made her who she was – was diminished.” Maynard, who loved the outdoors, even took a walk through the woods with her friends and family on the very day she ended her own life, Ziegler recalls. Florida Woman Arrested For Hitting Boyfriend In Eye With Condom Via TheSmokingGun A 19-year-old Florida woman was arrested early Sunday morning for domestic battery after allegedly striking her live-in boyfriend in the eye with a box of condoms. According to police reports, Dominique Claridge and William Hessian, 19, got into a verbal argument that turned physical around midnight. The squabble took place inside a car being driven by Hessian near the couple’s Bradenton home. Claridge told cops that the pair argued about Hessian “talking to some other girl.” At one point, Claridge threw a box of condoms at Hessian, striking him in the left eye. The alleged prophylactic attack left Hessian with “minor bruising to the eye area,” police noted. Investigators did not describe the size of the condom box that struck Hessian, who works as a welder. Claridge is a waitress at Tijuana Flats, a Mexican restaurant in Bradenton. While Claridge copped to flinging the condoms at Hessian, she claimed it was in retaliation for him slapping her in the face. She also claimed that Hessian tried to pull her out of the vehicle. Hessian told deputies that Claridge also punched him several times. Since deputies could not determine the primary aggressor in the confrontation, Claridge and Hessian were both arrested for misdemeanor domestic battery and briefly booked into the county jail. WTF?!?! Man Rejected By Woman On Facebook Charged With Burning Down House Social media can lead to new connections but it can also bring unwanted attention. Via My Fox 8 reports: A Kentucky man is facing charges of burglary and arson after allegedly burning down the house of a woman who rejected him on Facebook. “I definitely hate to see this for my sister,” said Samantha Beagle, the victim’s sister. Samantha Beagle and her husband tried to save her sister’s home, but it was too late. “My husband actually pushed the front door open and we had to jump off the front porch. There was no going in, smoke was just rolling out,” Beagle said. “This is one of those tragic situations where somebody is now without a home and for such a minor reason. It’s disturbing,” said Major Robert Warfel, with the Frankfort Police Department. Major Warfel says the homeowner, 22-year-old Joanie Yount, was being harassed online by 37-year-old James Graham. “She had some comments posted by this individual on her Facebook page about some pictures she had. She rebuffed those and it’s kind of what set this all in motion,” he said. “It got to the point that she was very aggravated,” Samantha Beagle said. Beagle says Graham was an acquaintance but Joanie Yount was not interested in a relationship. “She doesn’t want a relationship, she just wants people to leave her alone. When it comes to stuff like that, either be decent or don’t bother her at all,” she said. However, authorities say Graham didn’t back off. Police say he found an unlocked door, let himself inside and started a fire in Yount’s bedroom. Fortunately, Yount and her 3-year-old son were not home at the time. Beagle says she can’t imagine what Graham would have done if Yount was home at the time. The home suffered smoke and water damage, which destroyed the floors and ceilings in some of the rooms. The single mother and her son were forced to find another place to stay. Yount has picked up a second job to help replace her son’s Christmas presents that were destroyed in the fire. This is so sad. We can’t even imagine how traumatic it must’ve been for the neighbors who overheard screams coming from the home. Via DailyMail reports : The chilling sound of a woman pleading for forgiveness was heard coming from the home where eight children were found stabbed to death on Friday in Cairns. The 20-year-old brother of most of the victims alerted authorities. On Thursday night a woman was heard shouting: ‘Don’t let them take them away from us. God bless us. Forgive me for what I’ll do.’ A neighbor said they heard a woman screaming in a mixture of English and Torres Strait Creole, a native language of islanders. Mersane Warria, who is also known as Raina Thaiday, is a person of interest in the deaths of the children, according to reports by the Courier Mail. Far Northern Region Acting Chief Superintendent Russell Miller confirmed Ms Warria was a person of interest in relation to the deaths of her seven children and niece, the Sun Herald reported. Ms Warria was also rushed to hospital in a critical condition with stab wounds to her chest. The 34-year-old remains in Cairns Hospital in a stable condition and will undergo a mental health assessment. On Friday night police had still not laid any charges. Cairns Regional Crime Co-ordinator Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar described the massacre as a ‘tragic and traumatic event’. Details about what investigators found inside the house have not been revealed but a neighbor said she had been told there were bloody scenes ‘everywhere’ inside. Officers who arrived first on the scene said it was like ‘something out of a horror movie’. This sounds really awful, but apparently there were some warning signs. Thursday a neighbor said she saw the mother taking personal possessions from her home to her front yard saying she was going to ‘make a fresh start’, writes the Courier Mail. A 13-year-old girl said she walked two of her girlfriends to the Murray Street house on Thursday evening after they had been shopping. She said when they got to the house, the older girl’s mother – Ms Warria – came out and gave her money for a taxi home. ‘She was saying stuff about God and other stuff,’ she told AAP near the crime scene on Friday afternoon. She said: ‘Papa God gave me the power to do anything.’ Warria also told the girl she was a ‘warrior’. The brother/cousin who found the crime scene is being comforted by family. A relative has told of her horror after the bodies of eight children aged between 18 months and 15-years-old, were found dead at a Cairns home following a massacre just six days before Christmas. Ms Warria’s devastated cousin, Lisa Thaiday told reporters the woman was the children’s mother. ‘I just can’t believe it,’ she said. ‘Those poor babies.’ Ms Thaiday said another sibling, a 20-year-old man, arrived home to discover his brothers and sisters dead inside the house and alerted the authorities. He is now being consoled by other family members. ‘I’m going to see him now, he needs comforting,’ Ms Thaiday said. She described the family and extended relatives as close-knit and many live in surrounding suburbs. ‘We’re a big family and most of us are from the (Torres) Strait,’ she said, adding that she rushed to the scene after hearing about the incident on the radio.
