Obesity is a leading killer in the African American community. Churches all across the country are getting in the fight for health. They are offering dental care giving out health care kits and getting in the fight to save our families. One such church in the heart of the Delta has been fighting the good fight for over a decade. Now, he has the support of The National Baptist Convention. For over a decade from his pulpit here at Oak Hill Baptist in North Mississippi, the Rev. Michael O. Minor has waged war against obesity and bad health. In the Delta this may seem akin to waging war against humidity, but Mr. Minor has the air of the salesman he once was, and the animated persistence to match. Years into his war, he is beginning to claim victories. The National Baptist Convention, which represents some seven million people in nearly 10,000 churches, is ramping up a far-reaching health campaign devised by Mr. Minor, which aims to have a “health ambassador” in every member church by September 2012. The goals of the program, the most ambitious of its kind, will be demanding but concrete, said the Rev. George W. Waddles Sr., the president of the convention’s Congress of Christian Education. The signs of change in the Delta may be most noticeable because they are the most hard-fought. A sign in the kitchen of First Baptist Church in Clarksdale declares it a “No Fry Zone.” Bel Mount Missionary Baptist Church in the sleepy hamlet of Marks just had its first Taste Test Sunday, where the women of the church put out a spread of healthier foods, like sugar-free apple pie, to convince members that healthy cuisine does not have to taste like old tires. Carved out of the fields behind Seek Well Baptist Church in the tiny town of Lula is a new community garden. The pastor, the Rev. Kevin Wiley, is even thinking about becoming a vegetarian, a sort of person he says he has never met in the Delta. Many pastors tell the same story: They started worrying about their own health, but were motivated to push their congregations by the campaign that began in Mr. Minor’s church. On a previous episode of VH1’s “Basketball Wives”, Evelyn Lodaza and fiancé, Chad Ochocinco were having a romantic candlelight dinner on the beach, when the subject of sketchy pasts came up. Evelyn was concerned (rightfully so) that Chad would read the blogs and internet nastiness about her history of lovers then possibly change his perception of her. He so lovingly replied that what she did when she was single was her right and that he had no judgment about whoever she slept with prior to their relationship. I thought that Chad was completely on point. He seemed to have great understand about life, letting go and living in the present. Although I get the greatness of acceptance, I certainly do also get that people in general are not so kind, forgiving, or compassionate. So I asked a few of my male friends what that was all about and this is what I learned… Men do not judge the past sexual history of women nearly as harshly as other women do. It seems that women are more concerned with who and/or how many sexual partners other women have had than men are. While a man doesn’t necessarily want his wife to have slept with the entire football team, he is more willing to overlook her sexual prowess prior to him as long as it didn’t involve his best bud or a family member. A man gets with the woman who makes him feel good overall. If it is his time, if he has somehow opened the mental possibility of settling down then he wants to be with the woman who makes him feel good in every area of his life. Her having a “past” doesn’t factor into his feeling electrified, treasured and alive. If she has connected with him in a way that makes him feel totally free and at ease, then any of her added slut skills are only a plus. Women who were once a little slutty have a greater sense of self and how to handle a man. Men find that some women who have carried themselves more loosely in younger years have a greater sense of self-confidence, self-worth and are not so wrapped up in neediness from her man. He likes the idea that she can stand alone and is not defined by a companion. Men also believe that her previous slutty ways have better taught her how to interact with men, making her not so controlling and domineering. My mother always taught me to “keep a penny between my knees”, meaning not to give up the goodies if I ever wanted to get married. While I think there was a great deal of merit to what she taught me, I also think that much has changed over the years. If there is one thing that I have learned about watching these men wife-up “sluts”, it’s; who am I to judge? What women or men do in single life is really their business and other people waste too much time (that could be spent creating, enjoying and living your own lives) sitting in judgment of others. Everyone is entitled to experience their own life as they see fit and there is nothing more important than the present moment. As a community we are over sexed and under satisfied meaning that we indulge in sex without really ever coming out on an equal playing field. I believe that if more communication and dialogue between the sexes occurred then we would be better equipped to please each other on all levels, not just sexually. Here is a list of 5 common mistakes men make sexually that turn women off: Talking Up Your sex game, before the first quarter : Best believe this is the cause for many cringed faces, side eyes and missed calls. Yes, today’s woman is more sexually adept and aware than previous generations but like men, we revel in mystery. Don’t let the cat out the hat too soon, because if a man ends up having more bark than bite, it will result in many lonely nights. Are we there yet: This may be more of a personal pet peeve but the more I share it, I find that more and more women can relate. Don’t ask us repeatedly if we have had an orgasm. We love that you are but some of us take a lot longer than others to achieve an earth shattering orgasm.
