‘We’ll be looking across the continent for young people — just like you — to help lead the way,’ first lady says of next week’s trip. By Eric Ditzian Michelle Obama Photo: Getty Images First lady Michelle Obama has made youth leadership, education and health and wellness prime focuses of her work in the White House. Next week, Mrs. Obama will take that laudable agenda worldwide during a trip to Africa with her mother and daughters — and MTV and BET are coming along for the ride. “We know that Africa is a fundamental part of our interconnected world,” Obama said of her upcoming trip. “And when it comes to meeting the challenges of our time, whether it’s climate change or extremism, poverty or disease, the world is looking to African nations as vital partners. And we’ll be looking across the continent for young people — just like you — to help lead the way.” The first lady and her family will be making stops in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa, and Gaborone, Botswana, in an effort to engage and empower youth around the globe. MTV News and its social platforms will be covering the journey, and BET will air a 30-minute news special called “Impact on Africa: On a Mission With the First Lady,” hosted by journalist Lola Ogunnaike and featuring exclusive footage of the Obamas at official events. “We’re so excited to engage with BET and MTV’s audiences throughout this historic trip,” said Kristina Schake, communications director for the first lady. “Mrs. Obama has called on young people at home, in Africa, and around the world to follow the trip and connect with each other. We know that young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow, but also are the leaders of today, and we want their voices to be heard.” Mrs. Obama’s trip is a continuation of her work to engage young people at home and abroad, from mentoring students in the United States and encouraging them to gain international experience, to encouraging young people to excel academically, serve and lead during her visits to Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, India, Mexico and the United Kingdom. The first lady plans to deliver the keynote address to a U.S.-sponsored Young African Women Leaders Forum in South Africa and visit the Johannesburg Apartheid Museum and Robben Island Prison Museum in Cape Town, where Nelson Mandela and many anti-apartheid leaders were imprisoned. BET’s special will also include a “Reporter’s Journal,” during which Ogunnaike will write blog entries along the route capturing special moments of the trip and her personal experience. “I look forward to having you with us on this journey, and I look forward to the connections that you’ll build, the lessons you’ll learn and the impact that you’ll make with young people around the world for months and years to come,” the first lady said. To help spread the word about the trip, follow updates about the goings-on and interact with others, head to Act.MTV.com or get in the conversation on Twitter using the hashtag #youngafrica.

A natural hair style can hold its own, whether you’re caught in a summer rain, splashing in the pool, or racing through the sprinklers. There are many options for beating the summer heat and keeping your natural style in check. From braids to twists to curly freestyle, this summer’s natural hair styles offer simple looks from the board room to the beach. Braids Whether you wear them conventional or funky, braided styles are simple and long lasting. Cornrows provide the most extended wear of any braid, and the thinner they are the longer they will hold up under normal activity. Try a braided “Mohawk” with the sides braided up into a Mohawk as opposed to shaved. You could also sport a braided ponytail or chignon. The Real Hairstyles Of Black Planet [PHOTOS] Twists Twists are easy to do and add a little pizzazz to an otherwise simple “do.” Two-strand twists and Bantu knots allow you to play around a bit with color and style. Bantu knots twist hair to the head and can be arranged in several different styles that are flattering and chic. Try wearing them in four knots with a side swept bang and geometric parts. “Twist outs” can give you a wavy look and a sustainable hairstyle to beat the summer heat.Wear it free style and add a headband, or pile it on the crown of your head into a loose ponytail. Bantu knots offer an easy transition from one style to another: you can rock the twist for a few days, and then loosen your curls into a mass of perfect coils for a different style. The bob is back this season, and a great alternative for funky twists. Lighter color dread locks are also hot this year. Black Hair Styles For African-American Women Freestyle curls If you’re rocking natural curls or waves and looking for a way to beat the summer heat, try a curly upsweep. Gather the hair and twist upward from the base of the neck like a French twist, and secure it with a hair clip or bobby pins. Style your front natural hair curls as normal. You could also try using different headbands and hairpins to pull the hair away from the face and keep cool. 8 Hairstyles Men Love Natural Hair Care for Summer Natural hair may be more carefree, but it is just as vulnerable to damage from the heat, sun, chlorine and salt water. Make sure that you wash your hair after swimming. You should also use a heat protective leave-in conditioner when you’re going to be out in the sun a lot. Deep conditioning treatments and UV moisturizers can also keep your hair looking great. Natural hair is prone to dryness under normal circumstances, so moisturizing is even more important in the summer sun.
I was just reading the article about the woman who was bipolar and I kind of have the same issue but she’s not really bipolar just moody as hell. I’m 27 years old and the woman I’ve been seeing for about 6 months is 33. I’ve always loved older woman because they’re more willing to commit than the women my age. They kind look for more than a big house and car and poppin bottle at a hot sweaty club in the vip section. The woman I’ve been dating is hard to read because it’s like one day she wants me and the next day she doesn’t. Or sometimes, I call her up and she’s upbeat and later that day she’s short and dismissive. She’s very moody but when I have days when I don’t want to deal with her sh*t and I want to stay at my crib and watch sports she takes it personal. I’m a cool guy through and through until you mess with me and when I’m angry or if I get hot headed then you know something is wrong and she’s slowly taking me to that point. I dig this woman and I think she’s a good person but her moods are too much to handle some days. She would be perfect if she weren’t so damn moody. My thing is how do I deal with her when she’s being ugly?
Theft of human hair extensions and wigs is apparently on the rise. Some robberies have ended in death, while others have perplexed cops completely: it seems thieves would rather walk out with hair than cash. According to the New York Times , once stolen, the hair is typically sold on the street or on the Internet, including eBay, shop owners and the police say. In recent weeks, packages of hair that may have sold for $80 or $100 retail have sold for as little as $25 out of car trunks in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Houston, the authorities said. The most expensive hair type — and the one in highest demand by thieves and paying customers alike — is remy hair, which unlike most other varieties is sold with its outermost cuticle layer intact. This allows it to look more natural and to last longer without tangling. Remy hair from Indian women is the most popular. (Remy hair extensions can cost as much as $200 per package and the average person requires at least two packages.) Two years ago, at the Beauty One hair supply store in Chicago, thieves went after the store’s cash. But last month, they bypassed the register altogether and took just the hair, which was valued at $90,000. What do you ladies think of this? WBW Honors: Madame C.J. Walker WTF! Critics find it difficult to separate Mel Gibson’s personal life from troubled character. By Kara Warner Mel Gibson in “The Beaver” Photo: Summit Entertainment After release date changes and several other unrelated misfortunes, “The Beaver” is finally bowing in New York City and Los Angeles, with other cities to follow May 20. Starring Mel Gibson, Anton Yelchin, Jodie Foster (who also directed) and Jennifer Lawrence (in a supporting role), the film revolves around Walter Black, a once stellar CEO suffering from severe depression, until he discovers a Beaver puppet he uses as a therapeutic tool to help him reclaim his former self. So what do the critics think? Of the 70-plus reviews up on Rotten Tomatoes , 51 deemed it “fresh,” giving it a 70 percent fresh rating. The most interesting aspect is how each reviewer chooses to address the subject of the “Gibson drama.” The Story ” ‘The Beaver’ is almost successful, despite the premise of its screenplay, which I was simply unable to accept. I concede it is possible that a man in depression might be able to heal himself by projecting his personality into a hand puppet. I am not sure it is possible, or even advisable, to make a serious movie about that. We go through the movie with Mel Gibson wearing a toothy beaver on his left hand, and that creates a whole lot of disbelief for us to suspend. — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times The Performances “So what’s to recommend in ‘The Beaver’? First but not least, Jennifer Lawrence playing Norah. I wish this hadn’t been her first released film since ‘Winter’s Bone’; the role doesn’t deserve her. Still, she fills every moment of it — even a manipulative graduation speech — with warmth and graceful intelligence. Then there’s the man to the right of the puppet, by turns tortured, morose, animated or charming. When I first met Mel Gibson in Sydney almost 35 years ago, he was a handsome young actor with an open face, a winning smile, an abundant gift and a bright future, although no one could have imagined the extent of his success, or the depth of his fall. The gift remains.” — Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal Tiptoeing Around the Gibson Drama “As someone observes in the movie, ‘People love a train wreck when it’s not happening to them.’ How strange that this movie should seem to be commenting on Gibson himself, when it was filmed before his recent public scandals. Further, how strange that the movie should seem like an apology, recorded in advance — or that we should feel like accepting the apology, when we weren’t the ones who were wronged.” — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle “I know I shouldn’t allow my feelings about a performer in ‘real life’ to affect my view of him or her on film, but that’s like a judge telling a jury to ignore damning evidence they’ve already heard. Gibson has always excelled at playing men on the edge — apparently for good reason — and this part takes that to an extreme, a place he’s perfectly willing to go.” — Leonard Maltin, for IndieWire The Director “Foster clearly knows she’s telling a very messy, unmanageable story. The puppet seems to know it too: Sometimes its face looks cute and cheerful; other times, you catch a demented gleam in its eyes. Foster has crept out on a limb here, showing us a grown-up human being who’s in terrible pain, and for whom there are no easy answers. And if ‘The Beaver’ isn’t as effective as it ought to be, at least there’s integrity in Foster’s approach. She doesn’t work the movie like a puppet; she lets it speak for itself.” — Stephanie Zacharek, MovieLine The Final Word, Pro-Con-Pro Style “It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Gibson, with his wounded gaze and eloquent variations of posture, bringing such resonance to this character. At one point Walter says, ‘People seem to love a train wreck, as long as it’s not them’ — and the real-life overtone is unmistakable. The redemption the movie most strongly suggests is Mel Gibson’s own.” — Kurt Loder, Reason.com “Maybe Ms. Foster thought she was doing Mr. Gibson a favor by showing that he could play a troubled man who simply needs help. The problem is that, as an actor, Mr. Gibson doesn’t do normal anymore and is at his best playing men on the verge, as in ‘Edge of Darkness,’ a thriller about a cop hunting his daughter’s murderer. It was a suitably blunt character for an actor who has become a blunt instrument and has a lock on loony tuners and angry patriarchs. That should make Walter a fine fit for Mr. Gibson, except that there’s no there there to the character, just a puppet with a bad attitude and good timing. A raggedy rage-aholic, it steals the show, handily. Take away his puppet, and the man disappears.” — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times “Foster merits praise for putting her energy into a movie about mental illness that goes beyond the slickness of ‘As Good as It Gets,’ in which a happy ending can be spun from a patient’s mere promise to take his medication. There is one element of ‘The Beaver’ that does reflect a Hollywood sensibility: Walter’s breakdown never threatens the family financially. The narrative would have more tension if they didn’t appear so comfortably padded in a Nancy Meyers-like milieu. (Meyers directed Gibson in 2000’s ‘What Women Want,’ a feel-good movie that now seems very far in his past.) But despite that and the ludicrousness of the puppet prop, ‘The Beaver’ is serious about portraying mental illness. And whatever your opinion about Gibson the man, so is Gibson the actor.” — Mary Pols, Time Check out everything we’ve got on “The Beaver.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
