Mariah Carey Drops Out Of Tyler Perry’s ‘For Colored Girls …’

‘I’m not at liberty to discuss her personal life at this time,’ Carey’s rep says about her decision not to star in the film. By Jocelyn Vena Mariah Carey Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage Fans who have been looking forward to seeing Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson hit the big screen together for Tyler Perry’s film adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s 1975 play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf” will be disappointed to learn that the flick is officially one diva short. A rep for Carey confirmed to People.com that the singer decided not to appear in the flick this week, following Perry’s confirmation of the cast to MTV News in April. Her rep, Cindi Berger, gave no concrete reason her departure but said, “I’m not at liberty to discuss her personal life at this time.” Her dropping out of the film has many wondering if Carey is pregnant, a rumor that has been following her around since she married Nick Cannon two years ago. That rumor has to date not been confirmed. Shooting for the film is expected to take place in New York City this summer, and the film will hit theaters in late 2010 or early 2011. Earlier this year, Perry (and Janet Jackson) listed the names of the women attached to the movie, which at the time included Carey. “It’s Janet, Mariah, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine, Anika Noni Rose … I don’t want to forget anybody,” Perry said. “It’s pretty incredible.” “For Colored Girls …” is based on a series of 20 poems about a woman who is identified with a single color of the rainbow. The stories deal with a wide spectrum of topics including love, abandonment, rape and abortion. The City Recap: The Elle Reality Show

We realize that as a show about women in fashion, MTV’s The City is bound to cross-promote certain magazines, designers and brands … but this is getting a little ridic. It’s basically the Elle reality show at this point … this week’s title even had Elle in it. Bad as it is for Elle that Olivia Palermo works there, the PR volume makes up for it. Fortunately, MTV was a non-discriminatory cross-promoting media whore of a network last night, as The N.Y. Post ‘s Page Six and Glamour got some love, too. But why? Here’s THG’s plus-minus recap of last night’s The City , “The Belle of Elle” … THE FACE OF ELLE : Only not really … or at all . Joe stops by to ask Olivia if she wants to go to a party for Gossip Girl – more shills! – stylist Eric Daman. Plus 2 , because we love us some GG and its trendy fashions. Kelly informs Whitney Port that Glamour – cha-ching! – wants to do a full page on her line. Whitney wants to bring Roxy. Kelly advises no. Whit does anyway. Wash . For a society girl, Olivia likes the attention she gets at the party way too much. Aren’t they supposed to not be impressed by anything, Blair Waldorf style? Minus 17 . Roxy’s LOL skirt look – “ballerina gone punk rock gone a little hooker, but in a good way” – is predictably not embraced by Glamour fashion director Sasha. Plus 10 . Kelly to Roxy Olin : “This business is made up of freaks and followers. I’m totally a freak. So you want to be a freak? That’s great but you pay the price.” Plus 14 . ROXY AND A HARD PLACE: Whitney is often caught in the middle. Olivia, regarding Seth talking to Blake Lively and Leighton Meester: “I can talk to a park bench.” LOL. What does that even mean? That Blake is a park bench? Minus 25 . Joe says that an Elle item made it in Page Six. Olivia perks up, only to learn that the so-called “Belle of Elle” is new fashion director Alexis Bryan Morgan. Served! Plus 17 ! Erin gives Olivia a look, delighted by Olivia’s reaction as she learns it’s not her in the press. Wash , because that was sort of cold, but we kinda don’t blame her … at all. At a Bergdorf Goodman party, Whit is, like, so nervous, but meets with an exec at the women’s division and makes a pitch for her fall like like a seasoned vet. Plus 11 . Through it all, Roxy was left in the cold, and more or less useless, with no discernible purpose on the show. But at least she’s true to herself … or something. Minus 2 . TOTAL: +10. SEASON: -73 .

Pressure for Female Genital Cutting Lingers in the U.S.

PART ONE… http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/05/21/america.female.genital.cutting/index.html Pressure for female genital cutting lingers in the U.S. By Stephanie Chen, CNN Photo: Despite cultural pressures, Fatima Mohamed, a Somali living in the U.S., refuses to allow her 11-year-old daughter to be cut. (CNN) — Fatima Mohamed, a 45-year-old Somali immigrant living in America, was faced with a question most parents will never worry about: Should my daughter be circumcised? The United States has outlawed female genital cutting, but cultural and religious pressures to circumcise girls linger among some African and Muslim immigrant families. Mohamed says the decision was an easy one for her to make after going through the painful experience herself in Africa as a child. She strongly opposes the idea of cutting her 11-year-old daughter, an American-born Somali with long curly hair, who plays soccer and likes watching “American Idol.” But not every family in her African community in Massachusetts feels that way. Nor can they they swiftly make the decision to reject circumcising their daughters, because it's a cultural ritual integral a woman's identity, she says. “They say they don't want to hear it,” Mohamed says. “Some think I'm disrespecting my own culture. Some will say, 'You act like an American now. You forgot about who you are.' ” Women at risk of FGC States with the highest estimated number of women who've been circumcised or are at risk for genital cutting: California: 38,353 New York: 25,949 New Jersey: 18,584 Virginia: 17,980 Maryland: 16,264 Minnesota: 13,196 Texas: 13,100 Georgia: 9,531 Washington: 7,292 Pennsylvania: 6,508 (Courtesy of Brigham and Women's Hospital) Female genital cutting is often a coming-of-age ritual practiced in various parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, but the procedure isn't just invoking concerns in the developing world. Religious and cultural beliefs fueling female circumcision often follow immigrants and refugees who move to America. Rarely have cases of female genital cutting been documented in the U.S., but much more likely, cutting has moved underground in the U.S. and overseas, advocacy groups and doctors say. In the U.S., an estimated 228,000 women have been cut — or are at risk of being cut — because they come from an ethnic community that practices female genital cutting, according an analysis of 2000 Census data conducted by the African Women's Health Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital. The Census reports there are roughly 150 million women living in the United States. The World Health Organization estimates up to 140 million women and children worldwide have been affected by female genital cutting. The WHO defines female genital cutting as a process that alters or injures female genital organs for nonmedical purposes. There are several types of female circumcision. The most severe types require the inner or outer labia to be sewn together, a procedure performed in parts of Somalia and Egypt. Other forms include excising the entire clitoris or part of the clitoris. Genital cutting dates back at least 5,000 years, says Marianne Sarkis, a professor of international development at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Some women desire the procedure because they believe they are dirty or unmarriageable if they are not cut, she said. There are cultures that begin cutting women as early as infancy, while some wait until adolescence. Communities divided Not all families in communities where female genital cutting is commonplace will want to participate. In Mohamed's immigrant community in Massachusetts, families are divided, she says. Some refuse to allow the procedure, as she does. Others say they want it, and many remain silent. Some will say, 'You act like an American now. You forgot about who you are.' –Fatima Mohamed, Somali immigrant in the U.S. Occurrences of the practice have been documented in the U.S. In March, a Georgia mother was charged with female genital mutilation after the father noticed an infant's genitals “appeared to be have been circumcised,” according to the Troup County Sheriff's Office. Officers wouldn't comment further on the family. Several advocacy workers say the more common scenario involves sending girls back to their home country to have the ritual performed. Matt Lauer Cheating Rumors, Denials Continue

Today host Matt Lauer has feverishly denied recent reports of his infidelity and that he and his wife Annette Roque are on the rocks after 12 years of marriage. In comments made regarding moving out amid a cheating scandal, Lauer told People , “I have never moved out. I’m not moving out. There is no truth to that.” What he didn’t mention were comments by his mother-in-law, who confirmed the blowup and the fact that Matt has left the family apartment in New York City. Johanna Struijk told the Enquirer that daughter Annette is fine in the wake of the breakup, saying “she is happy” and she no longer wears her wedding ring! While Johanna didn’t want to discuss what triggered the split, sources say an enraged Annette accused Matt of fooling around during the Winter Olympics. Alexis Houston was/is his alleged mistresses … or one of them. Lauer counters he was not out partying and claims he was “in bed most nights by 7:30 p.m.” OTHER WOMEN? Secret life? Matt Lauer scandal refuses to die . People at NBC – from the higher-ups in charge of Today to colleagues Bryant Gumbel and Al Roker – have Matt Lauer’s back. So why won’t this story go away? While he says he hasn’t moved out of the apartment where Annette and their kids live, he’s not leaving from there in the early morning hours to go to work. Enquirer reporters have staked out the apartment in the early morning hours and haven’t seen Matt leave like he did in the past when he was living there. However, Matt shows up at the Today studios like usual – meaning he’s still in town and going to work, just coming from another location other than home. One reason for the damage control? Matt has allegedly been pressured by NBC to keep the marriage going, as female viewers prefer his family man image. The Today show has called this inaccurate and unfounded .

Casey James Will Have A ‘Big Career’ After ‘American Idol,’ Pal Says

But Danny Ross hasn’t written off James’ finale chances yet: ‘You can’t underestimate the women of America.’ By Gil Kaufman Casey James Photo: FOX It’s a bit late in the season for the usual conspiracy theories to arise, but there’s something about the way the “American Idol” finale is shaping up that has given Casey James’ supporters pause. “I don’t know, I think there’s something prejudicial going on, where it just seems like they’re stacking the deck against him,” said Danny Ross, owner of the Fort Worth blues club Keys Lounge, where the top-three “Idol” finisher has jammed on and off for the past two years. On Wednesday afternoon (May 19), Ross said he thought James did well on Tuesday night’s show , but he just couldn’t shake the feeling that the show’s producers were trying to steer America toward a Lee DeWyze/ Crystal Bowersox showdown . “The John Mayer song [‘Daughters’] was not as dynamic as [Bowersox’s] ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ or [DeWyze’s] ‘Hallelujah,’ but, gosh, I’ve played with Casey, and I know talent when I see it, and Casey is one of the only guys I sit in with at the club,” he said. “I didn’t see any signs for Casey in the audience and not many for Crystal but a lot for Lee. Casey came in here last week and did a set like nothing had changed, and I had people say that if he played like that on TV, it wouldn’t be any competition.” Ross has been in the business a long time and considers himself a good judge of talent, and he said he thinks DeWyze is a good singer and Bowersox has “a hell of a voice,” but neither can front a band the way James can or rip off the kinds of bluesy guitar solos he’s seen Casey play in his club. So while he sees an uphill climb for his prot
