Only in Anchorage, Alaska. The famous "Running of the Reindeer".

Like the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, the Anchorage event has hoofed, horned animals chasing a festive mob of people. Unlike Pamplona, the Anchorage runners got to pet and hug their docile pursuers as they picked up their bibs prior to race time. Another difference is the snow — which didn’t seem to bother upwards of 2,000 runners who clogged Fourth Avenue for the bizarre one-block race. Zany costumes abounded. The giant butterfly costumes from the Ski for Women earlier this month were back, though not necessarily the same women wearing them. There were Vikings, a purple moose, a creature from “Where the Wild Things Are,” a guy wearing a whole polar bear hide and, appropriately, a team of butchers. Yes we have some odd celebrations and events in the Great Land. From the Cordova Ice Worm Festival to the famous Fur Rondy celebrations going on now in Anchorage, to the craziest most dangerous race in the world, the Iditarod . Now add to that list the uniquely Alaskan Running of the Reindeer. Hey its cold, we’re bored, what would you do? Have you ever wanted to see an event like this from the animal’s perspective? Well now you can. Wouldn’t you like to see a reindeer catch one of these participants and exact a little revenge for all of that rendeer sausage they eat?

Ellen DeGeneres Talks About Her First Week On ‘American Idol’

Comedian jokes about Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest during Friday’s episode of her talk show. By Gil Kaufman Ellen DeGeneres and Randy Jackson on Wednesday’s “American Idol” Photo: FOX Let’s face it: everyone had a rough first week on “American Idol.” The guys, for the most part, tanked, and the women were only marginally better. Even the judges had some difficulties, with Simon Cowell looking visibly bored at times, the other panelists seeming a bit off and new addition to the panel from the same case of nerves that affected many of the contestants. But no matter what the critics say, Ellen had a blast at her new gig. The veteran comedian discussed her first week of live “Idol” shows on the episode of her talk show airing Friday (February 26). “It’s been a fun week,” she told her in-studio audience. “I’ll tell ya, I like being live because anything can happen on live television.” Despite being seated at the other end of the judges’ table from Cowell, DeGeneres said that one of the British judge’s plunging necklines allowed her to get an eyeful of his chest on Thursday night. “Yesterday, Simon had so many buttons open on his shirt he almost had a wardrobe malfunction,” she joked. DeGeneres spent some time talking about the differences between watching “Idol” at home and experiencing it live. “I’ve watched from home for years and years and now I get to see what happens behind the scenes. It’s different, very different. I always knew that Ryan worked hard, but I had no idea during the commercial breaks he works another job selling Mary Kay cosmetics.” After discussing the in-studio sound of the contestants’ live vocals, she reiterated how “totally different” the music comes across in person than it does on television. “The mix is different in the studio, so everyone sounds one way in the studio and then I go home and I listen to it,” she said. “You know, in the studio Simon has a Texas accent and he’s the sweetest guy. He’s totally hairless. Totally different, totally.” DeGeneres is bringing a blend of good-natured comedy and boundless enthusiasm for “Idol” to the judges’ panel, and she continued that vibe on her own show on Friday. “It’s really exciting, though. There’s energy and excitement in the studio, and there is a lot of suspense,” she said. “That’s what they do. They build up tension and nerves. I won’t do that to you, though. I’m going to tell right now who I think is going to win. I think the person who’s going to win is … a girl or a guy.” Ellen will be back judging the 20 remaining hopefuls next Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday night, four more contestants will be sent home, and last year’s third-place finisher Danny Gokey will perform his new single, “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘American Idol’ Experts Ask: Is New Top 24 The Worst Yet?

Season-nine semifinalists’ rocky live debut has ‘Idol’ experts and fans concerned. By Gil Kaufman Tim Urban Photo: FOX The early semifinal rounds of “American Idol” are always difficult. You are bound to have some early hopefuls falling victim to first-time-on-TV jitters, a few dark horses soaring before an eventual crash and a handful of singers proving they were lucky to have gotten there in the first place. But after the first two nights of mostly panned performance, veteran “Idol” watchers woke up Thursday (February 25) wondering, “Is this the worst top 24 ever?” The answer is easy for Dave Della Terza, webmaster of the long-running “Idol”-bashing blog VoteForTheWorst.com , which encourages “Idol” watchers to purposely stuff the box with votes for the weakest contestants. “This truly is the worst top 24 in ‘American Idol’ history,” Della Terza said. “If you notice, the only contestant in the entire top 24 to be universally praised by the judges was Casey James . And Casey isn’t even that good.” Things are so bad, Della Terza said, he’s actually having a hard time picking contestants to highlight because of the embarrassment of riches. So far, he’s targeted country-star wannabe Haeley Vaughn and Tim Urban, the mop-topped Texan who made the cut after Chris Golightly was disqualified . After a painful performance on Wednesday night, judge Simon Cowell told Urban the panel had it right the first time. “I’ve never found it so difficult to narrow down just one person as the worst,” he said. “This year’s crop could probably all be selected for one reason or another. It’s hilarious to think about the judges’ comments last week on the show when they were cutting people and talking about how this year is so competitive because of the level of talent. I bet the producers would love a do-over to start with a brand-new 24. We’re actually stuck with these contestants for three more months. It’s going to be a painful but hilarious three months.” Rickey Yaneza, webmaster of popular “Idol” blog Rickey.org , said the two-night live kickoff was, in a word, a “bloodbath.” While in some ways it was worse than previous years, Yaneza said he was glad the poor performances revealed what he sees as the true story line of season nine. “Previous seasons hid it better, but it became clearer than ever that this show is cast, and they’re not looking for the best singer but for a ‘type,’ ” Yaneza said. “Like Casey James, who apparently appeals to the Kara DioGuardi demo, you’ve got the young kid [Aaron Kelly], the soul singer [Jermaine Sellers], who were picked more for their type than singing abilities.” Yaneza also suspects the show was cast in a way to ensure a female winner — which Cowell has been loudly touting after two straight years of male winners — “so they’re throwing in these mediocre guys who they hope can at least sing a decent tune, but they’ve faltered.” He did, however, pick a few of his favorites, including Kelly, Andrew Garcia and Cowell’s early fave, Lee Dewyze. It could be that viewers are simply spoiled from last season’s embarrassment of riches, MTV News “Idol” expert, Jim Cantiello suggested. “Last year’s semifinals gave us plenty to buzz about, and not just from A-listers Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and Danny Gokey,” he said. “Singers like Mishavonna Henson, Felicia Barton and Ricky Braddy all delivered vocals that were miles better than most of the performances seen this week. … If Lil Rounds got up on the semifinal stage and sang her face off, there’s no reason why Ashley Rodriguez couldn’t have done the same.” Cantiello felt the problem so far is that the men who were off were “jaw-droppingly bad” and that ones that were good weren’t even that good. “In previous years, for every embarrassing Garrett Haley or Jason Yeager, we had a Jason Castro or David Cook offsetting the [poor performances],” he said. “This year, viewers were left straining to come up with a highlight.” That said, Cantiello said viewers need to give the singers at least another week before they write off the season-nine cast. “It’s important to remember that ‘holy crap’ moments rarely come the first time the performers hit the live stage,” he said. “Elliott Yamin, Chris Daughtry, David Cook, David Archuleta, Melinda Doolittle, Chris Richardson … they all brought it week two.” And while most focused on the disappointment of the male singers, almost all agreed that Tuesday night’s debut of the women was also rocky, with early favorites like Crystal Bowersox, Katie Stevens and Rodriguez getting taken down several notches. Another veteran “Idol” watcher, MJsBigBlog.com founder MJ Santilli, agreed with Yaneza about the seeming female tilt this year. “The guys were terrible last night, but I’m not surprised, because in their pursuit of a girl winner this year, I believe the producers have stacked the deck with mediocre male talent,” she wrote via e-mail. “The most buzzworthy of the bunch, Andrew Garcia, has a shtick — turning pop songs into awesome little acoustic ditties. Not only has the ‘turn a pop song on its head’ shtick been done really, really well on ‘Idol’ already (David Cook, Kris Allen), but it could get old pretty fast.” Santilli suspected “Idol” producers were not expecting the women to stumble out of the gate like they did, with mediocre live debuts from Rodriguez, Janell Wheeler, Stevens, Katelyn Epperly and Vaughn. But even with those missteps, Santilli targeted Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox, Epperly and Stevens as potential winners. “However, I don’t think there is one contestant out of this group who will create the kind of buzz that Adam Lambert, David Cook or David Archuleta did in past seasons,” she said. MTV.com readers responding to the male performances didn’t have many kind words either, with Ted writing, “That was bad … nightmarish bad. If [it] doesn’t get any better next week, I am out of here.” Bridgette added, “I thought the women were bad, the guys were awful. Where is the talent? This is the worst collection of supposed talent I have ever seen on this show.” What do you think of the top 24? Will they step up their game, or is this as good as it will get all season? Is the Internet Ruining the Olympics? [Olympic Mysteries]

Watching the silly drama unfold yesterday about disappointed skier Julia Mancuso ‘s mean Tweets about teammate Lindsey Vonn , I started considering how the internet has played a part in these Hotlympics. And I don’t like it! Obviously Gawker has been giving you the Best Olympics Coverage On the Internet , so the ol’ series of tubes has definitely proved good for something these past two weeks. But otherwise? It’s mostly doing damage. Are we surprised that two athletes who have competed with each other since childhood are not always the best of friends? We really shouldn’t be. But then Mancuso uses a bad word in a Tweet while discussing yesterday’s flagged Giant Slalom run (caused by Vonn crashing) and everyone gets allll posty about how there’s Fightz! going on among the ranks of the women skiers. And everyone picks it up, because who doesn’t like two pretty girls fighting and splattering sexy mud all over our beautiful, kind global celebration . Frustratingly, the athletes can get all caught up in it too, and the whole gross, dumb thing keeps getting frothier and frothier. Or attend the tale of poor Scotty Lago, the dudebro snowboarder (is there any other kind?) who became be-scandal’d and was told to go home because of sexxxy photos he took in the Olympic Village. To be fair, it is quite shocking that a 22-year-old kid who just won an Olympic medal in Baggy-Pant Spinning would be gallivanting around Athlete Disneyworld flirting and trying to pull a little tail. And because of The Internet, TMZ can run some candid snaps of such behavior and Vancouver tells him to go home. Lest we fans start to suspect that the Olympians might be doing bad sex things ! And of course the internet is also giving us those cruel, horrible spoilers. Right on the front pages of the New York Times or, more mind-bogglingly, NBC.com. I am fine with the fact that time is what it is and the work day is too, so I can’t really watch everything when it’s happening. Say what you will about NBC’s Americans First, Questions Never airing practices, but an 8pm block is, I suspect, still the most sensible way for us to watch the games. Yet the internet doesn’t respect our personal wishes and splashes this spoiler shit everywhere they can. “Why are Bode Miller’s race results on LARPer.com??,” I think desperately to myself when scanning my favorite websites. It’s just a shame. Obviously the internet has done some good things for us during these Olympics (two thumbs), but for the most part I think we’d all be better off without all the peripheral noise it creates. That said, if the web can dig up anything about, oh say, just off the top of my head, some sort of Joubert/Weir hate-sex scandal or something, I think some of us could take an academic interest in that. As always, pics via Getty

Jake Pavelka and Ali Fedotowsky: Reuniting on (or After) The Bachelor?

Fans hoping for a fairy-tale ending to The Bachelor may get exactly what they want … well, no they won’t, unless your idea of a fairy tale is Vienna Girardi winning. Or so we’ve heard. But OK! Weekly is spinning quite a yard in its new issue about “what’s next” for Jake Pavelka and Ali Fedotowsky, who “put their love on hold.” OMG it is meant to be. You can’t stand in the way of this love, Tenley Molzahn . Take a hike, Vienna. Neither can match Jake and Ali’s unbridled passion … right? Wrong. But OK! really wants you to believe this. The star-crossed pair melted into each other’s arms in a reunion behind the scenes at the taping of ABC’s The Bachelor: Women Tell All , the magazine suggests. SECRET REUNION : Is one in the cards for Jake and Ali? We don’t buy it. It was every bit as romantic as their fans wished it would be, too … it almost makes one forget how Ali Fedotowsky left the show to become the next Bachelorette . “They both held each other as long as they could and had their arms wrapped around one another,” a witness says. OMG, we are getting hot just thinking about it. There is no doubt Jake was into Ali – she was his frontrunner, he says – but are they in love now ? OK! claims they are, and claims to know things about … The secret reunion (unlikely) Their hotel hookup (more unlikely) Ali’s past (more dead relatives’ houses?) Jake’s current feelings for her (likely G-rated) Jake’s plan to win Ali Fedotowsky back (arrive out of nowhere in pilot’s uniform a few episodes into the next season of The Bachelorette ) We wouldn’t hold your breath for any of this, no matter how MFEO you think Jake and Ali are. If you believe these rumors, you need serious help, BTW.

Adam Lambert Says Susan Boyle’s Album Made Him Laugh

‘I’m happy for her success, but that album is terrible,’ Lambert says of LP that outsold his own. By Jocelyn Vena Adam Lambert Photo: Mark Von Holden/ WireImage When Adam Lambert released his debut album For Your Entertainment in November, he was able to best both Rihanna and pal Lady Gaga on the albums chart. But he was still outsold by one other reality show contestant: Susan Boyle. “I know, if only it weren’t for Susan Boyle!” the “American Idol” alum joked in the March issue of the U.K.’s Gay Times magazine “I’m happy for her success, but that album is terrible. [The cover of the Rolling Stones’] ‘Wild Horses’ is the one that made me laugh the hardest. I just died when I heard it. I was crying with laughter. It was the most horrendous, sacrilegious treatment of that song!” And though his criticism of Boyle’s album sounds harsh, Lambert is more intent on silencing his own critics. “Still, when my album charted, it was validating,” he added. “I was feeling bit attacked, like I had to vindicate something. I thought: ‘Wow, look what I did.’ ” Three months after his American Music Awards performance , Lambert told the magazine that he’s still surprised by the public’s response to the show. “It catches me off guard,” he said. “In my circle, and in a lot of the underground clubs and performance spaces in Los Angeles nobody thinks twice about it, they love it. Then I gave what I thought was a harmless performance and everybody jumps down my throat about it. And I’m like, ‘Sorry, I didn’t realize it was going to be that big a deal.'” Lambert also didn’t think his glam album cover for For Your Entertainment would be so talked about. “With the soft focus, and the retouching nobody would have said a word [if it was a girl on the cover],” he said. “Here in the States, a lot of people are really uncomfortable with it, which is hilarious.” Earlier this month, Lambert told MTV News that he was excited to tour overseas, where he thinks his on- and offstage antics won’t seem so controversial. “I think the European audiences are generally a little more liberal,” he said. “I’m sure there are certain things that I do that won’t upset people as much as they do here.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Adam Lambert Related Photos MTV News’ 2009 Men Of The Year: #3 Adam Lambert MTV News’ 2009 Women Of The Year: #8 Susan Boyle Related Artists Adam Lambert Susan Boyle

Lilly Scott and Michelle Delamor Lead Night of Wobbly Women on American Idol

Before we break down each American Idol performance from the first night of live auditions, we must say: The judges seem confused. They chose a slew of Taylor Swift-like guitar players, laid back contestants (Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox , Janell Wheeler, etc.) with a quiet sound, and then complained last night when the women played to their strengths. Simon continually said he didn’t have any “Wow!” moments, but, in many ways, he didn’t select any “Wow!” contestants for the semifinals. Below, in descending order, we rank our favorite performers from the evening: Lilly Scott : Played with the arrangement on “Fixin’ A Hole” by the Beatles and stood out with her original sound/look. Comes across as a “real, indie artist,” as Randy said. Michelle Delamor : Almost seems like a professional singer already. We wouldn’t have chosen an Alicia Keys song because it sets the bar too high, but Delamor can wail. If this is an actual singing competition, based on the best voice, she’s the best woman. Siobhan Magnus : Different, dark, we liked her version of “Wicked Game” a lot. Falls somewhere between the acoustic players mentioned above and Delamor. Crystal Bowersox : We can’t get enough of the harmonica, but that alone won’t be enough to carry her to the title. Katelyn Epperly : Didn’t like the look. As Ellen said, she was trying too hard. But nice, blues-like version of a Beatles song. Didi Benami : The perfect song choice (“The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson), but what will her range be like? Seems like this is the exact performance she’ll put on every week. Paige Miles : The biggest surprise of the night, only because we scarcely saw her on previous weeks. A great voice. Janell Wheeler : Attempted to go outside of her comfort zone and rock out to Heart’s “What About Love.” Points for trying, at least. Katie Stevens : We agree with the judges. You’re adorable. Choose songs that are younger and more fun. But amazing pipes. Ashley Rodriguez : Shockingly in danger already. But unless fans want nothing but Swift wannabes, will give this potential rocker another chance. Haeley Vaughn : Just awkward all around, from her look to her version of “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” Lacey Brown : Atrocious. WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE PERFORMER ON THE NIGHT?

Evan Lysacek and Nastia Liukin: Dating!

As celebrity couples go, Evan Lysacek and Nastia Liukin are a gold-medal pair. Seriously, they’ve both won Olympic gold medals in their respective sports. On his way to becoming the first U.S. man to win figure skating gold in 22 years last week, Lysacek had a little help from Liukin, a gymnastics champion. The couple met in October 2008 in Rapid City, S.D., performing on the NBC special Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular and have dated since last summer . “We became good friends and became really close since,” says Lysacek, who attended the ESPYs with Nastia last July and things progressed from there. Lysacek went to Dallas to cheer on Liukin during her gymnastics comeback at the U.S. Nationals in August, then this month, the couple switched roles. “To see his dreams come true was amazing,” Liukin, 20, who had a cameo on Gossip Girl last season, says of watching her man triumph at the Olympics. “Even though we’re not in the same sport, there’s nothing like the Olympics. It was nice to be on other side, to be the support system. But I was nervous.” “She been so helpful to me,” adds Lysacek. “She has been through it herself. If I’m having a bad day, she tells me to have faith and to keep going.” “Sometimes your support system has more faith in you than yourself. And when she tells me things are going to be fine, I really believe it.”

Michelle Delamor vs. Paige Miles: Semifinal Showdown!

They are probably the two biggest unknowns on American Idol . Paige Miles and Michelle Delamor have both advanced to the semifinal round and will perform live tomorrow night on Fox, along with 10 other women. But you’d hardly have expected that if you watched the show’s early auditions. Neither of the singers were featured very often, but that means little once the fan voting begins. Remember: A year ago at this time, no one had heard much from Kris Allen or Allison Iraheta, either. So while it may be difficult to assess at the moment, we’re still asking readers to compare Paige and Michelle below and then vote in our poll: Who will go farther on American Idol? Once you let your voice be heard above, sound off on Tyler Grady vs. John Park .

Family Guy Actress with Down Syndrome’s Sarah Palin Smackdown Too Hot for NYT

The latest twist in the important controversy of Family Guy making fun of Trig Palin: An actress with Down syndrome said Sarah Palin “does not have a sense of humor.” She was in the offending episode. Updated with more zing! Andrea Fay Friedman played the girl with Down syndrome Chris dated in the episode. (Her IMDB says she’s been on Saving Grace , Law & Order: SVU and 7th Heaven among other shows.) She was the one who said the fateful line which incurred Sarah Palin’s facebook-based ire : “My dad’s an accountant, and my mom’s the former governor of Alaska.” (Gawker.tv has got the clip .) And she has something to say to no-fun Sarah Palin, which she said in an email to the New York Times . However! It appears that what the Times printed was just the nice portion of a much meaner email Friedman sent out to various media outlets. The blog Palingates has published the uncensored email: I guess former Governor Palin does not have a sense of humor. I thought the line “I am the daughter of the former governor of Alaska” was very funny. I think the word is “sarcasm.” In my family we think laughing is good. My parents raised me to have a sense of humor and to live a normal life. My mother did not carry me around under her arm like a loaf of French bread the way former Governor Palin carries her son Trig around looking for sympathy and votes. (Emphasis mine.) How does one say in English… “Zing?” The Times , however, stops at “my parents raised me to have a sense of humor and to live a normal life.” They must have done the calculations and figured that being able to interview Sarah Palin in the future was worth more than printing Friedman’s awesome email in full. How mainstream media. It’s too bad, because the best part about Friedman’s response was also the point—such as there was one—of the Family Guy gag: Palin used Trig so blatantly as a campaign tool, and positions herself so squarely as the voice of the disabled community (see: “death panels”), that of course the one person with Down syndrome to appear in the Family Guy episode would be related to her. We can think of many, many well-meaning but possibly ‘edgy’ jokes to make right now. But we’re watching the Olympics and don’t feel like reading a bunch of pissed-off comments from people who would, like Sarah Palin, take these jokes the wrong way. So, let’s just say: Excellent work, Andrea Fay Friedman. Stop being so wimpy, New York Times . And: U-S-A! U-S-A!
