Russian Player Goes Unpunished In ‘Sportsmanship’ Double Standard That Probably Would Have Gotten Serena Fined

T here appeared to be a double standard in tennis officiating after a Russian player went unpunished for unsportsmanlike conduct that, if history was any indication, officials would have likely admonished Serena Williams for displaying. See Also: Australian Paper With Racist Cartoon Of Serena Williams Says It Has ‘Nothing To Do With Race’ In a video making the rounds on social media,  Sloane Stephens called out her opponent, Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova , for apparently committing multiple violations of tennis decorum during their heated first-round China Open match on Sunday in Beijing. The instance that caught everyone’s attention happened in the third set, when it appeared that Pavlyuchenkova tried to hit Stephens with an overhead smash near the net. In tennis, “A player who hits the opponent while legitimately trying to return a ball to the opponent should not be penalized,” according to the U.S. Tennis Association guidelines for “officiating scenarios and interpretations.” But to the naked eye, Pavlyuchenkova’s intent was clear. “That f*king b*tch tried to hit me,” Stephens could be seen saying to herself as she returned to the baseline. Stephens had a good reason to suspect that the Russian player tried to hit her because the overhead shot came after they had a hot verbal exchange . It’s courteous to apologize for near miss or hitting your opponent with the ball. Williams was not granted the same benefit of the doubt during her U.S. Open match in September. She was fined a total of $17,000 for three code violations, including breaking her racket, instead of being issued the required warnings. Chair umpire Jenny Zhang ’s silence at the overhead shot and Pavlyuchenkova’s other antics was deafening. Zhang also overlooked the timing of Pavlyuchenkova calling a trainer to the court to treat her right shoulder. It’s frowned upon to ask for a timeout right before an opponent is ready to serve. Since Zhang declined to at least warn the Russian player, Stephens was compelled to speak up for herself. “That’s the sport we play. Right? Sportsmanship. That’s really important,” Stephens told the umpire while walking back to her seat. In the end, Stephens went on to win the match, anyway. This Saturday they are continuing their movement with the help of Shonda Rhimes . They are launching ‘Girl Collective,’ a sisterhood meant to challenge beauty stereotypes and build self-confidence through their existing Dove Self Esteem Project . Dove revealed that “6 in 10 girls believe that to do well in life they have to look a certain way.” Let that sink in. Outside voices and influences affect young girls in a manner that they often aren’t even fully be able to realize until the damage is already done. Dove is combatting this by changing the message. Leading up to the International Day Of The Girl, this day will be full of workshops to empower girls and women with the necessary tools and advice to be and feel their best selves. To make it even stronger, American Eagle is also supporting and powering this event too! The workshops will include things like: Skin Deep – Exploring Your Beauty Identity, More Like Me – Expanding Representation in Media & Entertainment, Girl Redefined – Challenging Gender Stereotypes, From “The Gram” To The Ground – Stepping Into Your Role As A Body Positive Ally. T hursday’s Senate confirmation hearing involving Christine Blasey Ford and Supreme Court nominee  Brett Kavanaugh provided the latest opportunity for Black women to stand up against sexual assault. Black women also went in on Kavanaugh inside the Senate building. Tarana Burke , the MeToo movement founder, was front and center during Ford’s testimony. These men are wholly uninterested and unmoved by this woman’s words…Dr. Ford has to talk about the worst trauma of her life in front of them. She affirmed and defended Ford, who was relentlessly questioned about her story of sexual assault against Kavanaugh. “You are not on trial,” Harris said, knowing that Republican senators were skeptical about the college professor’s character, not just her account. “You are sitting here before members of the United States Senate Judiciary Committee because you had the courage to come forward [and], as you have said, you believe it was your civic duty.” Another Black woman also had a moment during the Ford-Kavanaugh hearing: Anita Hill . Senator Dianne Feinstein , the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, referenced Hill during her opening statement. She recalled a 1991 trip to the airport in which saw a crowd watching Hill’s sexual assault testimony about then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas . She used Hill to make a powerful point. “How women are treated in the United States, with this kind of concern, is really wanting a lot of reform,” Feinstein said. Black women clearly communicated their viewpoints on Kavanaugh, and they showed no sign of backing down. ‘Serial Killer’ US Border Patrol Agent Arrested For Murders Of 4 Women, Kidnapping

David McNew/Getty Images Now, THIS is scary… U.S. Border Patrol Agent Arrested For Alleged Murders Authorities are describing a US Border Patrol agent arrested in connection with the deaths of four women and the kidnapping of at least one more as a “serial killer.” CNN reports that Juan David Ortiz, 35, confessed to killing four people between September 3 and September 15. Authorities are not ruling out the possibility of finding more victims. The victims were all believed to be prostitutes who were shot in the head. Ortiz was arrested after a woman he reportedly kidnapped managed to escape and call for help. Ortiz was arrested in Laredo, Texas and is charged with four murder charges and one unlawful restraint with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
