Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty M amie Till-Mobley, mother of Emmett Till, will be the central focus for season one of ABC’s Women of the Movement, a new series that will highlight and chronicle the civil-rights movement “as told by the women behind it.” The series will be produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith, both of whom were vital to securing the show a spot on ABC’s lineup. The show will focus on Mamie Till, whose son — Emmett Till — was lynched by a white mob in Mississippi for allegedly winking at a white woman in 1955. Following his death, Till-Mobley went on to join a forces with major players in the fight for civil rights justice following her son’s death. She dedicated the rest of her life to the civil justice and reform until her own passing in 2003. Jay-Z originally teamed up with HBO to work on a miniseries surround Emmet Till, where Taraji P. Henson was set to play his mother, but when director John Middleton died in April, the project was believed to be dissolved. It is not confirmed, but speculated that Women of the Movement is a the product of the work already done into the aforementioned miniseries surround Till. When proposed with the possibility of grabbing the rights to this, ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke instantly loved the idea as the series would turn attention to the women who were responsible for so many key events associated with the civil rights movement. This move aligns perfectly with Burke’s proposition to get more women in programming at the station.

Bassett turns on the charm as Carol, one third of a trio of “empty nesters,” who find themselves on a mission to reconnect with their sons after they forget to call them on Mother’s Day. The journey, in turn, becomes a mission to self-discovery. The chance to go a different way. My friends tell me I’m funny.” Basset chose to work Netflix, not because she needed an opportunity of course, but because they tell everyday stories when Hollywood can be so limited. “Our director and producer, they’ve been trying to get this done for 10 years. What stories are being told on the big screen goes through cycles. ‘We’re not doing biographies right now, or made for television movies right now. It’s great to have a place like Netflix where there’s such an array and something for everyone. We shot in New York City. It’s a love letter to the city. It was a wonderful experience.” Basset revealed she ultimately could relate to her character, which also influenced her decision to join the cast. “It had a comedic tone but was based in reality and I could relate being a mother. I relate being a girlfriend. I relate being a wife. I could relate on so many levels,” she said. “I thought this is something we don’t generally see but this is so real — the whole empty nest thing and who are you after the husband is gone and the children are gone. Depression is real after that for a lot of women. In families, sometimes the children are holding it together and everyone is focused on them. They’re fighting for their autonomy, and go off to college, who are you?” Bassett’s character and her Black son add some much-needed melanin to the Otherhood screen, which is important to Bassett who constantly reaffirms her children that they’re skin is beautiful. “It’s very important because the power of imagery and the history of this country and we know the scales have not been evenly placed and it’s very important, having a son and a daughter, that they understand who they are. That they are comfortable in their in skin that they’re skin is beautiful. For any woman, whatever skin you live in is beautiful but especially because it’s a life they have to live where they may not get a lot of affirmation in different rooms that they enter. They have to go in with confidence and come out with confidence. I just gave my daughter, I was leaving early this morning, a paper. I said ‘This is a little present for you because this is who you are little queen.’ It was an image of Nefertiti. So she should could always be proud of who she is and know that she is beautiful.” As for keeping herself grounded and motivated, Bassett offered the advice she gives her son, “When he goes off to the summer camp where he is a counselor at an autistic camp there are some days it’s a challenge. But that’s what it’s about, rising to the challenge and I tell him, ‘Yeah it’s tough, but find the good and praise it. It’s about your attitude and how you look t the situation. You won’t like it all but there’s a lesson in it.” Otherhood is streaming NOW on Netflix. As we know, they’ve announced that they’re an official couple since #TheBlogs outed them because it was obvious that something was going on. Obviously, the road to their relationship wasn’t without mess. Moniece hates it and Apryl, and we don’t quite know where Omarion stands. So, we begin the episode four months before all that drama started, and before Fizz and Apryl stopped fronting about their feelings. J-Boog, and Fizz come together at the gym to prepare for the millennium tour. They also meet up with Spectacular from Pretty Ricky, who also was also on the tour. The thing is, Fizz and Omarian had a falling out probably about five or six years ago and haven’t really spoken since. Omarion has been quiet about Apryl and Fizz but he’s supposed to be on the millennium tour (and we know by now that he was), so the behind the scenes of this is going to be interesting, especially because Fizz said the only person he’s ever been friends with, in B2K is J-Boog. The rest is just business. Speaking of Apryl, she’s back too, obvi. She says Omarian left her two months after she had their second baby and she doesn’t know why, and they’re currently in the middle of custody drama. But she’s glad to be back. She’s also filming around the time she was filling in for Melyssa Ford on Hollywood Unlocked so we’ll probably get to see some of her interactions with Jason Lee, who is also back as the mess bearer. Princess and Ray J are back with their daughter Melody in tow. They’re still struggling to juggle couple time with parent time. Speaking of parent time, A1 and Ray J are friends again. A1 forgave Ray for spreading rumors that Lyrica slept with Safaree. Plus, they have new fatherhood in common and lean on each other for support. They meet up with their babies, and this is where A1 tells Ray J that he and Lyrica are not on good terms. Actually, Lyrica picked up and left him a couple of weeks ago and he doesn’t know if or when she’s coming back. She has been gone for 10 days thus far. Hold that thought because we’ll get her side of the story soon. K. Michelle is back. She’s looking for a new house and working on her music. She has plans to make it big in the country music world. She also hired a surrogate because she wants to have twin girls. Then we meet Brittany B a Grammy-nominated producer/songwriter with a long list of impressive credits on her resume. She’s also one of the youngest African-American women at Warner Music Group. Black Chyna stops by her office to let her know that she wants her music career to jump off and Brittany plans to help. Back to A1. A1 and Jason Lee of Hollywood Unlocked are allegedly friends. So, Jason hits up A1 because someone sent him a video of A1 video chatting and flirting with Summer Bunni, an IG baddie. This video is supposed to be proof of A1 cheating on Lyrica with this woman, who was one of the women in question when Lyrica was pregnant. A1 says Lyrica knows about this (but she probably really doesn’t). However, he would rather this not be posted given how he and Lyrica aren’t cool right since this could make things worse. Jason Lee is in an interesting situation. If they’re truly friends then he wouldn’t release it, right? At the same time, there are no friends in Hollywood. Jason chases exclusives so of course, he’s going to post it. He tells A1 that he’ll give him some time to warn Lyrica first. None of this is going to go well. When Lyrica gets back to LA she explains her side of things to her mom, who has been helping with watching her baby. Basically, she left because she felt like she was dealing with a lot. She was tired of the rumors about her and Safaree and over A1 cheating on her. Apparently, A1 has been flewing (yes, flewing) chicks out, paying for boob jobs and all kinds of stuff. When they see each other face to face, this just turns into another argument that goes so left that A1 decides not to tell her about the video because she’s already super pissed. So, because we know what show this is, then you can already assume that Jason Lee ends up releasing the video. Let’s fast forward a bit to yet another conversation gone wrong with Lyrica and A1. This one happens over the phone because A1 decides to go on tour with T-Pain without telling Lyrica. That pisses her off. So, she questions why he didn’t tell her he left. He just turns things around on her and asks why she left him for two weeks and didn’t say anything. Then she asks why he didn’t say anything about the video. And he tries to turn things around on her again, asking her why she has been reading #TheBlogs. Finally, the episode winds down with Apryl and Moniece coming face to face, again, to chat about whatever it is they’re not feeling about each other. Basically,. This is fall out from their social media war. Apryl feels like Moniece lashed out at her first. Moniece feels differently and says she’s not the aggressor, and she’s tired of people looking at her as this bitter baby mama. Then she declares, “NO ONE’S GOING TO SIT IN MY FACE EVER AGAIN AND TELL ME ABOUT THE FATHER OF MY CHILD!” Annnnnnd scene. You know they had to leave us hanging for drama’s sake. According to CBS Philly , the sculpture—dubbed “MVP”—was added to the park as a part of Philly’s 60th Anniversary of the Percent for Art Programs. Washington, a Philadelphia native, broke barriers on both the tennis and basketball courts. While playing basketball for the Germantown Hornets, she led them to a national women’s title in 1930 and helped them earn 33 consecutive wins the following year. She also played with the Philadelphia Tribune Girls between the years of 1932 and 1942. Her athletic abilities went beyond the basketball court. Often referred to as the “Queen of Tennis,” she won the American Tennis Association’s national singles title eight times and won 12 straight double championships; marking her place in history as a sports legend. Bringing the plan for the statue to fruition was a collaborative effort between the Percent for Art Program, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, Make the World Better Foundation, and Councilwoman Kenyatta Johnson . Leaders of the initiative hope that the sculpture will inspire youth—specifically young girls—to realize their dreams. “The children and teens that come to Smith Playground everyday can see and be inspired by this powerful sculpture that looks like someone in their community,” Kelly Lee , Philadelphia’s Chief Cultural Officer, told Patch in a statement. “My hope is, like the Rocky statue, MVP will become a local destination where people will come, replicate the pose, take photos, or selfies and if only for a moment feel like a MVP – a most valuable player.” Throughout the years Washington has received several posthumous accolades for her accomplishments in sports. This time around, she has become the first woman to take home a whopping seven medals at one single World Championships. According to SwimSwam.com , on July 26 in Tokyo, Manuel won four golds and three silvers throughout the week, including being the first American woman to win the 50 and 100 freestyle last Sunday. In addition, the 23-year-old Houston native was on the “winning mixed 4×100 medley relay, then took silver on the women’s 4×200 free relay and 4×100 free relay, and mixed 4×100 free relay.” Despite breaking records, a humble Simone wrote On Twitter: “By no means was this a perfect meet, but that’s okay. The woman who was sentenced to life in prison at 16 years old for killing her sex trafficker will be released from prison next week. USA Today reports that Cyntoia will be released Wednesday after being incarcerated at The Tennessee Prison for Women for 15 years. As previously reported Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam granted her clemency in January after her case made national headlines and celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Rihanna drew attention to her story. Cyntoia’s sentence will be commuted to parole where she will stay under state supervision for the next 10 years. Easy: She tells the publication that, although she’s married to a man named Brooks Laich, she’s actually “not straight” and she once had a long talk with him about this fact. This is the sort of tidbit that overshadows even Julianne Hough’s nude body, you know? “I [told him], ‘You know I’m not straight, right?’ And he was like, ‘I’m sorry, what?’” the ex- Dancing With the Stars judge says in the September 2019 issue of Women’s Health, adding: “I was like, ‘I’m not. But I choose to be with you.’” The veteran television personality tied the knot with Laich in 2017 , following many years of being one of Hollywood’s best-known virgins. She famously dated Ryan Seacrest for a long time prior to getting with Laich. She explained to Women’s Health — for its annual “Naked Strength” edition — that her very personal “massive transformation” came four months after the couple’s wedding. “I think there’s a safety with my husband now that I’m unpacking all of this,” Hough continued. “And there’s no fear of voicing things that I’ve been afraid to admit or that I’ve had shame or guilt about because of what I’ve been told or how I was raised.” While Hough emphasized that her professional hockey player husband has been by her side this entire time, and that she’s happy she’s been so candid with him, she was still anxious to discuss parts of her journey with him. You can understand why, right? “I was connecting to the woman inside that doesn’t need anything, versus the little girl that looked to him to protect me,” she said, adding: “I was like, ‘Is he going to love this version of me?’ But the more I dropped into my most authentic self, the more attracted he was to me.” Props to Brooks Laich, huh? “Now we have a more intimate relationship,” Hough said of her marriage. In new photos from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s official Instagram account, the former USA Network actress is giving followers a glimpse behind the scenes of her somewhat private life. These pictures reveal a very, VERY pregnant Markle while she delves into important business and happenings at her Smart Works charity, an organization that helps vulnerable and longterm unemployed women regain the skills and confidence to get into work. To celebrate her recently-announced line of women’s workwear – which will benefit Smart Works – the relatively new mother shared the new snapshots above and below from her visits to Smart Works. The 37-year appears here to be playing stylist, helping clients select pieces to wear to a job interview. She’s also shown sitting at a table to talka bout the charity’s work. It’s also worth noting that Markle appears to be rocking the same black vintage jacket she sported while stepping out in New York City ahead of her baby shower in February. Reads the caption alongside these new photographs: Throughout her visits she noticed that while the donations were plentiful, they were also notably a combination of mismatched items and colours which weren’t always the right stylistic choices or sizes that didn’t necessarily ‘suit’ the job at hand: to make a woman feel confident and inspired as she walked into her job interview.
