Radiation scientists agree TSA naked body scanners could cause breast cancer and sperm mutations

The news about the potential health dangers of the TSA's naked body scanners just keeps getting worse. An increasing number of doctors and scientists are going public with their warnings about the health implications of subjecting yourself to naked body scanners. These include Dr Russell Blaylock (see below) as well as several professors from the University of California who are experts in X-ray imaging. At the same time, some internet bloggers are insisting that the TSA's naked body scanners pose no health risks because air travelers are subjected to higher levels of radiation by simply enduring high-altitude flights where cosmic radiation isn't filtered out by the full thickness of the Earth's atmosphere. This comparison, however, is inaccurate: The TSA's body scanners focus radiation on the skin and organs near the skin whereas cosmic radiation during high-altitude flights is distributed across the entire mass of your body. Comparing the total radiation exposure across your entire body to machine-emitted radiation exposure that focuses its ionizing radiation primarily on your skin is like comparing apples and oranges. You'll see this explained further, below, in the words of these scientists. As Dr Russell Blaylock ( www.BlaylockReport.com ) recently reported: “The growing outrage over the Transportation Security Administration's new policy of backscatter scanning of airline passengers and enhanced pat-downs brings to mind these wise words from President Ronald Reagan: The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help you. So, what is all the concern really about – will these radiation scanners increase your risk of cancer or other diseases? A group of scientists and professors from the University of California at San Francisco voiced their concern to Obama's science and technology adviser John Holdren in a well-stated letter back in April.” The letter Dr Blaylock is referring to is from the Faculty of the University of California, San Francisco and is signed by Doctors John Sedat Ph.D., David Agard, Ph.D., Marc Shuman, M.D., Robert Stroud, Ph.D. You can download or view the full letter from NaturalNews here (PDF): http://www.NaturalNews.com/files/TS.. . Even though it was written in April of this year, this letter has received increased publicity lately due to the TSA's sudden expansion of naked body scanners in airports as well as the agency's arrogant insistence that such machines will soon be used at bus stations, railway stations and other entrance points for mass transportation…. …Ten big concerns voiced by the scientists Here are ten additional concerns raised by these scientists in their letter: (the bolded titles are my subheads, the subsequent explanation test is quoted straight out the scientists' letter) #1) Cancer in senior citizens – The large population of older travelers, greater than 65 years of age, is particularly at risk from the mutagenic effects of the X-rays based on the known biology of melanocyte aging. #2) Breast cancer – A fraction of the female population is especially sensitive to mutagenesis-provoking radiation leading to breast cancer. Notably, because these women, who have defects in DNA repair mechanisms, are particularly prone to cancer, X-ray mammograms are not performed on them. The dose to breast tissue beneath the skin represents a similar risk. #3) White blood cells being irradiated – Blood (white blood cells) perfusing the skin is also at risk. #4) HIV and cancer patients – The population of immunocompromised individuals — HIV and cancer patients (see above) is likely to be at risk for cancer induction by the high skin dose. #5) Radiation risk to children – The risk of radiation emission to children and adolescents does not appear to have been fully evaluated. #6) Pregnant women – The policy towards pregnant women needs to be defined once the theoretical risks to the fetus are determined. #7 Sperm mutations – Because of the proximity of the testicles to skin, this tissue is at risk for sperm mutagenesis. #8 Radiation effects on cornea and thymus – Have the effects of the radiation on the cornea and thymus been determined? #9 Problems with the machine – There are a number of 'red flags' related to the hardware itself. Because this device can scan a human in a few seconds, the X-ray beam is very intense. Any glitch in power at any point in the hardware (or more importantly in software) that stops the device could cause an intense radiation dose to a single spot on the skin. Translation: This machine does not emit a “flood light” of radiation like you might get from a dental X-ray machine. Rather, this machine emits a thin, narrow beam of radiation that is quickly “scanned” across your body, back and forth, in much the same way that an inkjet printer prints a page (but a lot faster). Because the angle of the X-ray beam is controlled by the scanner software, a glitch in the software could turn the naked body scanner into a high-energy weapon if the beam gets “stuck” in one location for more than a fraction of a second. #10 Higher radiation for the groin? – Given the recent incident (on December 25th, 2009), how do we know whether the manufacturer or TSA, seeking higher resolution, will scan the groin area more slowly leading to a much higher total dose? UN General Assembly Votes To Allow Gays To Be Executed Without Cause | The New Civil Rights Movement

Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people were once again subject to the whims of homophobia and religious and cultural extremism this week, thanks to a United Nations vote that removed “sexual orientation” from a resolution that protects people from arbitrary executions. In other words, the UN General Assembly this week voted to allow LGBT people to be executed without cause. According to the International Gay and Lesbians Human Rights Commission, the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee on Social, Cultural and Humanitarian issues removed “sexual orientation” from a resolution addressing extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions this past week in a vote that was overwhelming represented by a majority of African, Middle East and Carribean nations. For a UN committee that addresses human rights questions that affect people all over the world, by removing protections for LGBT persons from a category of arbitrary executions, belies the objective and purpose of a committee whose focus this year is “on the examination of human rights questions,” according to its website. A number of LGBT human rights advocates were surprised by the decidedly lop-sided vote, including Mark Bromley, the chair of the Council on Global Equality, a Washington, D.C. based organization that brings together human rights organizations, LGBT groups, philanthropists and corporate leaders to ”encourage a clearer and stronger American voice on human rights concerns impacting LGBT communities around the world.” “I was very surprised by the vote,” said Bromley, who had been in contact with the United States Mission to the United Nations delegation all day Tuesday, who were trying to beat back efforts to strip sexual orientation from the resolution. But because the U.S. supports capital punishment, they usually abstain from voting on this resolution, thus they are in a weakened position with one arm tied behind their backs, according to Bromley. “But that said, the State Department did everything possible to beat back the efforts to repeal protections for LGBT persons,” he added. For further analysis into this story, read Tanya Domi’s latest piece at The New Civil Rights Movement, “UN Vote Allowing Gays To Be Executed Result Of Political, Religious Fundamentalism.” The U.K. gay rights and human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said, “This is a shameful day in United Nations history. It gives a de facto green light to the on-going murder of LGBT people by homophobic regimes, death squads and vigilantes. They will take comfort from the fact that the UN does not endorse the protection of LGBT people against hate-motivated murder. “The UN vote is in direct defiance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees equal treatment, non-discrimination and the right to life. What is the point of the UN if it refuses to uphold its own humanitarian values and declarations? “This vote is partly the result of a disturbing homophobic alliance between mostly African and Arab states, often inspired by religious fundamentalism. LGBT people in these countries frequently suffer severe persecution.” In an issued statement explaining the U.S. vote, a representative of the U.S. UN delegation said, At the outset, let me say that the United States strongly agrees with and appreciates the cosponsors’ efforts to retain language specifically condemning ESAs [extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions] targeting vulnerable groups, particularly members of the LGBT community, and we were dismayed that this reference could not survive an unfriendly amendment. Bromley expressed great disappointment in losing all the Southern African countries on the vote, including Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Nambia and South Africa, the latter, whose domestic laws and record on LGBT civil rights have held great regard throughout the world. Nonetheless, according to Bromley, from the days of former President Thabo Mbeki through present day leader Jacob Zuma, South Africa has been recalcitrant in its opposition to extending human rights to LGBT persons within international legal structures. Another region that unanimously supported the removal of sexual orientation from the resolution were the Carribean nations. Most noteworthy was the support from the Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica. Bromley indicated that the U.S. and human rights groups in the hemisphere have opportunities to forcefully advance LGBT rights through the Organization of American States (OAS) and Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Brazil and Uruguay are international leaders on LGBT rights and can play a constructive role in bringing Carribean nations into the OAS fold on these issues, according to Bromley. Middle East countries that principally observe the Muslim religion and its practices, as well as countries whose politics are dominated by Christian fundamentalists, generally oppose LGBT and women’s rights at the UN. Even the United States has yet to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Indeed, CEDAW has the most “reservations” filed by the most member states of any international human rights convention on record. A reservation is a statement made by a State which it purports to exclude or alter the legal effect of certain provisions of a treaty in their application. According to the Office of the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, A reservation may enable a State to participate in a multilateral treaty in which it would otherwise be unable or unwilling to do so. States can make reservations to a treaty when they sign, ratify, accept, approve or accede to it. When a State makes a reservation upon signing, it must confirm the reservation upon ratification, acceptance or approval…a reservation cannot be contrary to the object and purpose of the treaty. As an LGBT activist or an observer of UN and international politics, it is important for interested persons to understand that religion and culture play a major role in persuading internal bodies to not extend certain human rights to LGBT persons and women on religious and cultural grounds. These dynamics have created an international debate between advocates of “cultural relativism“–those who assert primacy of cultural values over human rights and those who are “ universalists,” who believe rights trump cultural concerns. The United States Mission to the United Nations has an explanation of the U.S.’s vote. Editor’s note: Thanks to Andr

Considering we’re only about four weeks away from Christmas — insert prerequisite “where did the year go?!” quip here — it’s about that time for celebrities to remember the less fortunate among us. With that in mind, here’s Comedy Death-Ray and Funny or Die presenting “We Are the World 25.75,” an almost anniversary celebration of the Quincy Jones supersong in support of the LA Regional Foodbank. Before you get too excited though, heed the words of Kurt Russell: “I want to stress that these are not good singers. This does not sound good at all.”

FDA will Ban Food Makers from Telling the Truth about Non-GMO Foods

(NaturalNews) In case anyone had any doubts about who the FDA really serves, the latest news should prove once and for all whose side they are on – and it isn't yours or mine. The Washington Post has reported that, in addition to ultimately approving genetically modified “Frankenfish” salmon without requiring a GMO label, the FDA will also be banning the inclusion of any references to not containing genetically modified content on food items which are GMO free. The FDA, which has been under intense pressure from GM interests to approve the modified salmon without requiring any labeling, stated that it could not require a label on the salmon because the agency determined that the altered fish are not “materially different” from other salmon. Apparently, the agency is using even the same, and even flimsier, justifications to force food companies to hide the truth if their products are GM/GMO free – much to the delight of the multi-billion dollar GM industries. We should have seen such an outrageous decision coming, given the FDA's past record and continued turn away from protecting consumers' health in favor of industry profits from drug and food companies who are obviously its true clients and masters. In 1994 the agency warned the dairy industry that it could not use “Hormone Free” labeling on milk from cows that are not given engineered hormones. It claimed all milk contains some hormones. The FDA told one canola oil maker that it could not use a label that included a red circle with a line through it and the words “GMO,” saying the symbol suggested that there was something wrong with genetically engineered food. It has also recently sent a flurry of enforcement letters to food makers telling them they could not use phrases such as “GMO-free” on their labels, including a food maker which produces an all fruit strawberry spread. In the case of the strawberry spread, the FDA reasoned that the label would be incorrect because GMO refers to genetically modified organisms and strawberries are produce, not organisms. “This to me raises questions about whose interest the FDA is protecting,” House Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) told the Washington Post. Kucinich has repeatedly introduced bills in the House that would require the labeling of genetically modified food but has been unable to overcome the money and influence of the GMO lobbies and companies. The FDA's anticipated actions come at a time when consumers increasingly want to know the content of their foods. In fact, polls consistently show that more than 80% of Americans want genetically engineered foods to be labeled. It also comes at a time when more and more studies are demonstrating the health and environmental dangers of GMO foods. “The public wants to know and the public has a right to know,” New York University nutrition professor Marion Nestle told the Post. “I think the agency has discretion, but it's under enormous political pressure to approve [the salmon] without labeling.” Not surprisingly, the GM industry agrees wholeheartedly with the FDA. As one director of animal biotechnology said, “Extra labeling only confuses the consumer. … It differentiates products that are not different [and] makes it harder for consumers to make their choices.” In other words, make it easier for consumers to make choices by limiting their information. Forget about health dangers, our right to know, or the constitutional rights to free speech (which the Supreme Court has ruled includes commercial free speech in anti-FDA decisions). The FDA simply wants to protect us poor consumers from being confused. Oops! ‘Rightwing’ Terror Suspect Turns Out to Be a…Leftwinger

It seems that whenever you hear about a “rightwing” hate crime nowadays, it turns out the the perpetrator turns out to be a leftwinger…much to the disappointment of liberals who continue to maintain the fiction about a violent Tea Party movement. And the latest case of a violent “rightwinger” who turns out to really be a leftwinger comes from my own county of Broward here in South Florida. With my condolences to the left who have been “robbed” of yet another example of supposed Tea Party “hate crime,” here is a report on the arrest of the suspect by Bob Norman of the Broward Palm Beach New Times: The woman charged by the FBI with making a threat that led to the lockdown of more than 300 Broward County schools after hearing

Ke$ha Says It’s ‘Cool’ Being Compared To Rihanna, Katy Perry

‘Out of that group of chicks, I’m the new bitch on the block,’ singer tells Complex magazine. By James Dinh Ke$ha on the December 2010 issue of Complex Photo: Complex Pop-star rivalry has been around for years. Whether it was Britney vs. Christina or Mariah vs. Whitney, there’s always been an underlying competition between your favorite female pop singers. But don’t expect any animosity between today’s stars, at least not from Ke$ha . The wilding-out singer, who’s the latest Complex cover girl, spoke with the magazine about her pop-star peers, including Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. “I actually think that’s cool,” the singer said of the female stars she’s being compared to. “Out of that group of chicks, I’m the new bitch on the block, so I’m still getting used to being compared to some of the biggest pop stars in the world, but I don’t take any offense to it. That just means people know my records.” Earlier this year, Ke$ha teamed up with Rihanna for the Barbadian bombshell’s girl-power trek, the Last Girl on Earth Tour. Despite the duo’s pairing, the blogosphere went into a fury when Rihanna recently revealed that she “didn’t want the generic pop record that Ke$ha or Lady Gaga or Katy Perry could do.” The party-loving pop star admitted that she hadn’t even read the quote, suggesting that the media may have taken Rih’s comments out of context. “I’m so used to the media flipping my words around that I’m sure she meant absolutely no offense to me or Katy or Gaga,” said the singer. “Rihanna and me are totally cool, we were just on tour together, and I know that she and Katy are good friends. I don’t take any offense because I’m sure it’s bullsh– anyway.” Based on the garbage-bag ensemble she work to this year’s MTV Video Music Awards , it seems that Ke$ha could care less about other people’s opinions. “I was trying to look super-hot,” she said. “I like to poke fun at when people make fun of me, because I don’t take myself that seriously. People say I’m ‘garbage chic,’ so I thought I’d take it to the next level and make a garbage bag super f—ing chic — and I succeeded!” As for now, the singer is focusing on her recently released Cannibal, a companion album to her debut, Animal. Christina Aguilera Struts Through ‘Express (Burlesque)’ At AMAs

Xtina gives a glimpse inside her upcoming big-screen debut, at the American Music Awards. By Gil Kaufman Christina Aguilera performs at the American Music Awards on Sunday Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Before she even took the stage at the American Music Awards on Sunday night (November 21), Christina Aguilera had already watched a series of over-the-top performances from show-opener Rihanna , an uncharacteristically sedate Miley Cyrus , the always outrageous Katy Perry and a piano-tinkling, snow-shower summoning Taylor Swift . In other words, she saw the future, and it was a cornucopia of female stars who have taken cues from her career — and she made sure to show them that she’s still got a few tricks up her sleeve. Preparing to make her big-screen debut alongside Cher in the upcoming “Burlesque,” as promised, Aguilera gave a sneak peek at what we can expect in theaters. “It’s going to be fantastic,” she told MTV News. “And it will give you a fitting little look inside the movie.” Seated in a chair with her back to the audience and wearing a black spangly bodysuit, knee-high boots and a bowler, Aguilera snapped her fingers and leaned into the jazzy, skittery rhythms of the new tune “Express (Burlesque).” As the camera pulled out, it revealed a set made up to mimic the backstage at a burlesque club, with Aguilera surrounded by a squadron of equally scantily clad dancers. She flashed back to the “Dirrty”-era Xtina, straddling and shimmying on the chair, then busting into the song’s uptempo chorus and showing off the throaty pipes that made her a star. Shaking her hair along with her lingerie-clad dancers, the singer was clearly back in her element, mixing club beats with a throwback, “Free Your Mind”-style R&B vibe and strutting across the stage confidently with her patented growly sass intact. Even after a career spent in the spotlight as a child star on the “Mickey Mouse Club” and a pop icon since her late teens, Aguilera said the difficulty of trying to reproduce the dancing in the film for the AMAs took a toll on her. “It will be another very new challenge for me,” Aguilera admitted beforehand. “My legs have been incredibly sore as I stepped into the role of Ali for this.” In the film, Aguilera plays a small-town girl with big dreams who stumbles on a burlesque club owned by the feisty Tess (Cher). Aguilera added that, while relearning the dance routines was grueling, the choreography is amazing. “You’re going to get quite the show,” she promised. “Quite the spectacle.” While Aguilera is new to the world of acting, Cher told MTV News that the pop star can dish it out with the best of them. “The scenes that she and I had together, I really enjoyed, and I really believe that she’s got definite chops,” she said. “We worked well together. I enjoyed all of it, and she was toe-to-toe with me the whole time.” What did you think of Christina’s performance at the AMAs? Share your reviews in the comments! Latest TSA Nightmare: Man Soaked by Urine

They keep coming — horrific examples of bad behavior by the TSA during pat-downs and body scans. The lastest: A bladder cancer survivor was soaked by his own urine after a TSA agent broke the man's urostomy bag. “I tried to warn him that he would hit the bag and break the seal on my bag, but he ignored me,” said the passenger, Thomas Sawyer. “Sure enough, the seal was broken and urine started dribbling down my shirt and my leg and into my pants. They never apologized. They acted like they hadn’t seen what happened. But I know they saw it because I had a wet mark. I am totally appalled by the fact that agents that are performing these pat-downs have so little concern for people with medical conditions.” From 3-year-old girls to nursing moms and now cancer patients, the TSA is racking up some major PR disasters, and they're heartbreaking, and they're infuriating, and there needs to be some additional sensitivity training, clearly. Christian Conservative Blasts ‘Feminized’ Medal Of Honor

While a divided nation last Tuesday finally rallied around one bright shining moment of patriotic glory — President Obama's awarding of the Medal of Honor to Afghan hero Army Sgt. Salvatore Giunta — a popular right-wing Christian commentator sharply split opinions even within his own camp. He blasted the award as “feminized” because it honors Giunta for saving his comrades rather than killing the enemy. The Army's official citation details how Giunta “exposed himself to withering enemy fire” during a daring effort to engage the enemy and extract his wounded comrades from an ambush. But Bryan Fischer, a columnist for the American Family Association who has often provoked headlines and consternation with his commentaries, read the narrative as hardly the sort of thing American soldiers were once known for. President Obama awards Medal of Honor to Army Sgt. Salvatore Giunta”When we think of heroism in battle, we used the think of our boys storming the beaches of Normandy under withering fire, climbing the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc while enemy soldiers fired straight down on them, and tossing grenades into pill boxes to take out gun emplacements,” wrote Fischer, director of issue analysis for the AFA, a longtime lobby on the Christian right. “That kind of heroism has apparently become pass
