Al Gore’s Current TV Is Struggling

Andrew Wallenstein at The Hollywood Reporter  suggests more than Al Gore’s marriage is crumbling. Gore’s cable channel Current TV is facing a dramatic makeover with an injection of MTV executives. Wallenstein tried to sugarcoat the inconvenient truths: For all the brilliance he has displayed grasping the meteorological dynamics governing the globe, Gore has miscalculated those of a slightly less complex world: the TV business. The radical ambitions he brought to the environment didn’t pan out the same way in cable; the television will not be revolutionized. Gore tried to sell off Current to his Google pals for half a billion dollars, but that didn’t take. So they’re taking the content away from small-d democracy and toward the persistent formula of other youth-culture channels, loaded with young-skewing documentaries and “reality” TV: For much of the past year, Current TV has been quietly undergoing an overhaul that will change just about everything but the struggling channel’s name. Current declined comment for this story. It’s a revitalization project Gore & Co. embarked on after exhausting a more lucrative possibility: selling the channel. Current’s founding partner, Joel Hyatt, spent much of 2009 shopping the network with a price tag that wildly overestimated the company’s worth, confirmed sources at several conglomerates. Current even had extensive sale talks as far back as 2007 with Google, where Gore serves as a senior advisor. Now the focus has shifted to fixing Current, perhaps with an eye toward a sale down the road. Last July, Hyatt was replaced as CEO by Mark Rosenthal, the former MTV Networks COO who is rebuilding the channel in the traditional mold Gore avowed to avoid, only to suffer the consequences. Rosenthal has brought in a crew of colleagues from his MTVN days including an unlikely ringer: Brian Graden, the programming genius who masterminded hit series from “South Park” to “The Osbournes,” before leaving last year. He’s on retainer as a consultant. Graden helped found the gay channel Logo and expressed joy last year at bringing documentaries to MTV with titles like “I’m Changing My Sex” and “I Work In the Sex Industry.” So here’s where the format change comes in: Forget bite-sized clips created by anonymous viewers; the new Current will consist of full-length series from the usual suspects in unscripted production who are getting the word that Current is open for business…. Several senior MTVN colleagues were brought in as consultants to engineer the turnaround including Hank Close, formerly president of ad sales. Several more key full-time hires have been made as well. But original programming is at the heart of any successful cable network, and for that he’s turned to Graden, who’s known for his knack for hits. Graden and Current make for an unusual combination. A network that has devoted significant time to serious topics ranging from AIDS in Africa to New Age spirituality is in the hands of Graden, who didn’t exactly win Peabodys for shows often criticized for corrupting America’s youth. Graden did not respond to an email seeking comment. The MTV infusion at Current is ironic considering the channel is essentially facing the same fundamental problem MTV confronted so successfully in the 1990s: a TV schedule comprised of multi-minute clips is far less advertising-friendly than the half-hours that ensure viewer tune-in isn’t so erratic. In other words, MTV “so successfully in the 1990s” dumped all the music videos in favor of “The Real World” ad infinitum, et cetera. [HT: Dan Isett]

Atheist billboard on Billy Graham Parkway: One Nation Indivisible (not under God)

The billboard features an American flag background and quotes the original phrase from the Pledge of Allegiance, before “under God” was inserted after “one nation,” in 1954. That was at the height of the Cold War and the addition was meant to distinguish the United States from the Soviet Union, which officially embraced atheism. Set to be up for four weeks, the billboards – costing a total of $15,000 – are a July 4 project of the N.C. Secular Association, a coalition of groups such as Charlotte Atheists & Agnostics, the Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle and Western North Carolina Atheists. Their message: non-religious North Carolinians are patriots, too. “We’re doing this to raise the consciousness of the people of North Carolina,” said Warren, 29, an electronic technician who served in the Marines from 1999-2004. “We want to let them know that not everybody here is religious. There are atheists in North Carolina and we expect to be recognized and treated like everybody else.” The Pledge of Allegiance was penned in 1892 by a Baptist minister who left out any mention of religion. For generations, the Pledge has been recited by schoolchildren as they gazed at the American flag with their right hands over their hearts. President Eisenhower signed the “under God” addition into law on Flag Day, June 14, 1954. Over the years, the courts have been asked to rule on the constitutionality of the Pledge. Jehovah’s Witnesses, who swear loyalty to no other power but God, challenged the requirement that kids deliver the oath. And atheists have said that adding “under God” amounted to a violation of the constitutional ban on government endorsement of a particular religion. “When the words ‘under God’ were inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance between ‘one nation’ and ‘indivisible,’ they made a lie out of both those ideals,” Joseph McDaniel Stewart, vice president of FreeThoughtAction and one of the N.C. coalition founders, said in an e-mail. “You can’t have an indivisible nation if you draw a line between the godly and godless. We all belong here.” The billboard project is the latest sign that atheists – nationally and in North Carolina – are trying to boost their visibility and challenge conservative Christians in public forums. A recent series of assertive books by atheist authors such as Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris and British biologist Richard Dawkins have climbed national bestseller lists. And when Dawkins came to Charlotte this year to speak at Queens University, local atheists sponsored a fundraiser for the Richard Dawkins Foundation. Warren said more than 600 people have signed up on his group’s Web site ( www.charlotteatheists.com ). And its monthly gatherings usually attract about 50 people. The Charlotte-based Billy Graham Evangelistic Association declined to comment. The Rev. Mark Harris, senior pastor at First Baptist Church in uptown Charlotte, said he was grateful that the local atheists’ financial resources “are so limited” that they could afford only one billboard here. He called the decision to place that one on Billy Graham Parkway “at best, in poor taste and, at worst, a disgrace.” Harris, who’s a leader in the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, also quoted Psalm 33 – “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” “Anybody who looks at the United States or looks at countries like Great Britain, which have been governed by a succession of godly (officials), will see why I personally believe that that’s why these nations have been so blessed,” Harris added. “And any decline of Great Britain and America will be in step with a growing independence from God.” http://www.thestate.com/2010/06/24/1348246/charlotte-atheist-groups-billboard.ht… added by: Stoneyroad

Ciara Urges Everyone To Get Tested For HIV/AIDS: ‘You Gotta Do It’

‘Knowing is greater than doubt,’ the singer says before National Annual HIV Testing Day. By Mawuse Ziegbe Ciara Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images Sunday marks the 17th year of National Annual HIV Testing Day, and as part of MTV’s GYT: Get Yourself Tested campaign, R&B star Ciara wants everyone to make sure they are informed of their status. “You gotta do it,” Ciara told MTV News’ Sway about getting tested. “Knowing is greater than doubt.” The GYT campaign was launched to help combat STDs among young people around the country. Statistics demonstrate that young Americans must remain vigilant when it comes to STDs. One in two people will contract an STD by age 25, and many of those people will get an STD without realizing it. In addition, one out of every five people in the U.S. has HIV and doesn’t know it. The R&B star also urges young people to get tested because knowing what’s up with your health makes it much easier to deal with: “You’ll feel so much better if you know what’s going on with your body, and you don’t want to be surprised.” To learn how to find events and free HIV-testing locations, young people can check out MTV’s GYTnow.org . The site also has key facts about HIV/AIDS as well as ways young people can broach the subject of getting tested with their significant others. Young people who do get tested soon will join another high-profile person who has recently committed to knowing his status. “I’m about to go get tested right now when we get done,” Sway confided in Ciara during their interview. “You convinced me.” For her part, Ciara seemed excited that her words were having an immediate effect. “Perfect!” said the star, with a triumphant fist-pump. “It worked!” Will you get tested? Share your thoughts in the comments. Who Can Ignore and Downplay Democrat’s Racist Statement? The Establishment Media Can

To refresh, as posted at NewsBusters and Eyeblast.tv , Pennsylvania Congressman Paul Kanjorski said the following on Wednesday while he was defending what Investors Business Daily has called “Financial Deform” : We’re giving relief to people that I deal with in my office every day now unfortunately. But because of the longevity of this recession, these are people — and they’re not minorities and they’re not defective and they’re not all the things you’d like to insinuate that these programs are about — these are average, good American people. This isn’t too tough to decipher, no matter how many House Democrats try to give him defensive cover — If the people Kanjorski “deal(s) with in my office everyday” are “average, good American people” because “they’re not minorities and they’re not defective,” then those who are minorities and “defective” in some way are not “average, good American people.” Kanjorski uttered an objectively racist (embodying “the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others”) statement. According to this report , Kanjorski is not apologizing. Therefore, one must conclude that the congressman is comfortable with his objectively racist statement. So how is the press handling this? The mostly Democrat-defending establishment press that generally sets the narrative for radio and TV news mostly understands the aforementioned elementary exercise in logic. This explains why Kanjorski’s statement, while occasionally being framed with the usual “Republicans attack poor misunderstood Democrat” approach, is mostly getting ignored. A search at the Associated Press’s main web site on the Congressman’s last name comes up with one seemingly relevant item , an article headlined “McMahon: Wrestling was soap opera.” Yeah, you read that right. But the article is really a collection of four short items and two “Quick Hits.” AP writer Philip Elliott (or perhaps his editors) thought that Connecticut U.S. Senate candidate Linda McMahon’s description of her Word Wrestling Entertainment enterprise was more important than Kanjorski’s racist remark, the coverage of which came second. Naturally, Elliott’s item used the “Republicans attack” technique: Republicans criticized Rep. Paul Kanjorski for what they said were remarks suggesting minorities are not “average, good American people.” The 13-term Pennsylvania Democrat vigorously denied the charge, saying Republicans were taking his words out of context to score political points. … A Kanjorski spokeswoman said the congressman was defending people who get government help from those who unfairly criticize them. Sure he was. But in the process, he uttered an objectively racist remark. Alleged “context” is irrelevant. Well, at least the AP has covered it in its own quirky way. The New York Times hasn’t . The Washington Post restricted coverage of Kanjorski’s statement to its “44” blog , and has apparently kept the matter out of its print edition. Matt DeLong’s post is funny, in a reality-denying, sickening sort of way (bolds are mine): A Democratic congressman has found himself the target of conservative criticism after an inartful description of who will be helped by the financial reform bill currently working its way through Congress. The conservative website Human Events reported that Rep. Paul Kanjorski’s (D-Pa.) appeared to say during Wednesday’s financial reform conference committee meeting that the financial overhaul will help “average, good American people” — but not minorities or “the defective.” It’s amazing how often the word “inartful” — which isn’t even a recognized word in the dictionary ( here or here ) — has appeared since candidate Barack Obama and others frequently employed it in 2008 to defend him and others after verbal gaffes and worse utterances. As to DeLong’s use of “appeared” — Matt, stop insulting our intelligence. Finally, it’s also quite predictable to see DeLong tag Human Events (accurately) as “conservative,” while, as Tim Graham at NewsBusters noted earlier this week , magazines like Rolling Stone almost never get the “liberal” or “radical left” tag from the establishment press. ‘Twilight’ Author Stephenie Meyer ‘Very Happy’ With ‘Eclipse’ Film

‘It’s so much fun to watch,’ she says of the third movie in the series. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephenie Meyer Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images When it comes to satisfying “Twilight” expectations, be it those of finicky film critics or easier-to-please Twilighters, no opinion carries more weight than the approval of the series creator herself. When MTV News spoke to celebrated author Stephenie Meyer, she said she is happy to just be the author who only has to come out for big premiere events once a year, versus the actors who are out doing promotion for weeks on end. Also, she is very pleased with the third adaptation of her best-selling series. “Oh, it’s really good,” she said of “Eclipse.” “It’s so much fun to watch. One of the ways I judge a good movie is I forget to be critical because I’m just having fun — and with this one, I definitely was having a good time watching it.” When asked about the decision to go back and re-shoot the infamous and highly anticipated “tent scene,” Meyer said the changes were minor, but necessary in order to fully capture the words and tone that made the scene so memorable in the book. According to Meyer, the result is “really satisfying.” “It was so simple — it was [just] a blocking issue,” Meyer explained of the decision to revisit the pivotal scene. “When Bella and Jacob crawl into the sleeping bag together, he didn’t put his arms around her, he was just kind of backed away from her — I wasn’t [on set] that day to say, ‘Hold it!’ [So] we went back and put that in. I’m very happy with that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Supreme Court Case a Defeat for Monsanto’s Ambitions

It should be no surprise that Monsanto's PR machine is working hard to spin the truth in this morning's decision in the first-ever Supreme Court case on genetically engineered crops (Monsanto v. Geertson Seed Farms). Despite what the biotech seed giant is claiming, today's ruling isn't close to the victory they were hoping for. The 7-1 decision issued today by the Supreme Court was on the appeal of the Center for Food Safety's (CFS) successful suit, which resulted in a ban on GMO alfalfa. And, while the High Court ruled in favor of Monsanto by reversing an injunction that was part of the lower court's decision, more importantly, it also ruled that the ban on GMO alfalfa remains intact, and that the planting and sale of GMO alfalfa remains illegal. This point, which seems to be lost in some news reports, is actually a huge victory for the Center for Food Safety and – most importantly – for the farmers and consumers who we represent. The Supreme Court ruled that an injunction against planting was unnecessary since, under lower courts' rulings, Roundup Ready Alfalfa became a regulated item and illegal to plant. In other words, the injunction was “overkill' because our victory in lower federal court determined that USDA violated the National Environmental Policy Act and other environmental laws when it approved Roundup Ready alfalfa. The court felt that voiding the USDA's decision to make the crop legally available for sale was enough. A different ruling could have had far-reaching ramifications that might have extended beyond our borders, affecting the health and status of world markets for U.S. alfalfa, and impacting the fastest growing sector of the US agriculture market – organic. But the court clearly saw that, and opted instead to rule very narrowly. And yet, Monsanto is out there in a public statement saying that they've won a great victory. They claim that they're ready to sell Roundup Ready Alfalfa seeds now, and that they hope that their farmers should be able to plant by fall 2010. It's a canny statement, but neither of those potential situations is by any means possible at this point. The bottom line: the ban on planting Roundup Ready Alfalfa still stands. The Center is victorious in this case in several other ways: most importantly, the High Court did not rule on several arguments presented by Monsanto about the application of federal environmental law. As a result, the Court did not make any ruling that could have been hurtful to National Environmental Policy Act or any other environmental laws. In addition, the Court opinion supported the Center's argument that gene flow is a serious environmental and economic threat. This means that genetic contamination from GMOs can still be considered harm under the law, both from an environmental and economic perspective. This Court opinion is in many ways a victory for the environment, the Center for Food Safety, for farmers and for consumers and a defeat for Monsanto's hopes of a green light. To represent this opinion in any other way is just spin. added by: treewolf39

At Home With Prince, Paris & Blanket Jackson

It’s been almost a year since their famous father’s death, and Michael Jackson’s children have understandably attracted a great deal of attention in that time. We’ve seen them at his memorial service, the Grammy Awards and on YouTube. But who are they really? They’re unique individual s, each a bit like their dad. At 13, Prince Michael Jackson is, in the words of family, “very smart” and an aspiring filmmaker. A year younger, Paris Jackson is “the strongest” of the three. That’s according to their grandmother and guardian, Katherine Jackson, who recently opened up to London’s Daily Mirror about caring for the star’s children. Their baby brother Blanket (real name Prince Michael Jackson II) is, well, a baby brother. His uncle, Jermaine Jackson, says he’s a water-gun-toting prankster. “As soon as you turn your back,” he told London’s Sun of Blanket, who his own son was accused of trying to taser, “he shoots you and you’re left soaking wet.” While Katherine Jackson recently said the home-schooled Prince, Paris and Blanket ” don’t have any friends ” she says they’re going to school come September. In a separate interview with the Associated Press, Katherine Jackson’s lawyer Adam Streisand noted only that Prince Michael would be heading off to school. But deep down, they’re pretty regular kids, just like MJ wanted. They’re upbeat, they’re into video games, movies, karate, and just playing with each other. If you caught Blanket going bonkers with his light saber moves YouTube, you already know he’s come out of his shell a bit. His older siblings are no different. The children are thriving, and what is often overlooked is how Michael Jackson, who lacked a real childhood himself, raised these three without mothers. Perhaps he was more human than people gave him credit for being. “The kids are happy,” said their godfather and Michael’s friend Mark Lester , the former child actor of Oliver! fame. “Things are settling down. That’s good.”

Drake Never Considered Changing Thank Me Later Release Date

‘If they got the music already, let’s let them listen to it,’ the Toronto MC recalls telling label after leak. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News Back in April, Drake revealed June 15 would be the release date for his much-anticipated debut, Thank Me Later. But when his album leaked well before its expected delivery, the Toronto rapper was adamant that the album rollout plan remain unchanged. “They tried to force me into a situation — I’m not sure if it was the label — [but] somebody tried to force me into a situation and drop the album June 9,” Drake told MTV News earlier this week. “I really was like, ‘June 9 isn’t enough time to let them digest all the leaked music. If they got the music already, let’s let them listen to it. Let’s give them that two weeks to ride around to it and talk to their friends about it.’ ‘Cause that way when they show up to the store, there’s no pressure — you know what you’re buying. You’re just going to support an artist you love and music you believe in.” His strategy seemed to have paid off. Hundreds of fans lined up outside of a Best Buy store in Manhattan to meet the rapper, who showed up to greet them and sign their copies of Thank Me Later. “I got here at 3 in the morning,” Natalia Morales, the first female fan to meet Drake, told MTV News. “I’m ecstatic right now. I’m still shaking!” For his part, Drake is returning the “thank you” for all the adoration he’s received this week from fans, especially the die-hards who camped out overnight to buy his LP. “I have more than confidence in them,” he explained. “I have a relationship with them, I understand. I don’t ever for a second doubt them.” What do you think about Drake wanting fans to have time to enjoy his album once it leaked? Let us know in the comments! Miley Cyrus Fans React To ‘Good Morning America’ Concert

‘We came out to see Miley with the nice surprise of Bret Michaels,’ a New Jersey mom says of star’s Poison duet. By Eileen Reslen Miley Cyrus performs on “Good Morning America” on Friday Photo: Getty Images In the words of Bret Michaels, it was “nothing but a good time” Friday morning (June 18) as ABC’s “Good Morning America” hosted the latest in its summer concert series, with Miley Cyrus performing several songs, including a duet with the Poison frontman on his “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” The mini-concert became a family affair as parents and their offspring sang along to the classic ’80s rock ballad, bridging the generation gap between the grown-ups (Poison fans) and kids (Miley fans) gathered on the Bryant Park lawn in New York City. Miley superfan Alison Brustman, 18, of Westchester, New York, said Miley’s choice of collaboration hit close to home. ” ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’ happens to be my dad’s favorite song,” Brustman said. “I was so excited because my dad’s my favorite person and Miley’s my favorite artist.” Stacie Fitzgerald, a mom from New Jersey, said she drove hours to bring her daughter Paige to the early morning concert. She was thankful to Miley for rewarding her efforts with good ear (and eye) candy. “We came out to see Miley [and got] the nice surprise of Bret Michaels,” Fitzgerald said. “Smart move, Miley: Give those mommas something to look at!” Hundreds of fans of all ages turned up — some holding large signs printed with the words “We love Miley” — wearing bedazzled T-shirts or rehearsing dance moves to show off their dedication to the pop superstar. For best friends Linore Ben-Avraham, 16, Isabelle Diamond, 18, and Remy Gordon, 18, who began camping out at 3 a.m., missing out on a few hours sleep was nothing for a chance to see Miley. “We didn’t go to sleep at all last night,” Isabelle said. “We fell asleep before she came on, and then we woke up with the crowd applauding.” Although the “GMA” audience included several parents with toddlers mounted on their shoulders, Cyrus did not give fans a “Hannah Montana”-style performance, a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by her appreciative teen following. “As she’s entering her adult life, so are we,” said Julianna Butera, 18, of Long Island. Her friend Moira Power, 17, agreed saying, “I do like her new image. We’re growing up with her.” Miley’s edgier new album, Can’t Be Tamed, includes the Bret Michaels cover and is due Monday. “We’ll memorize all the lyrics by Wednesday,” Joey Gordon, 16, said. Don’t miss Miley Cyrus’ Can’t Be Tamed World Premiere Live concert, which will be live-streaming on Miley.MTV.com Monday at 10:30 p.m. ET — the preshow with Sway begins at 10:15 p.m.!
