The art of getting high has gone to a whole ‘nother level Snoop Dogg Releases New Book “Rolling Words” Made From Real Rolling Papers How cool is this? Snoop Dogg has figured out a way for his fans to get high off of reading. The veteran rhyme-slinger, with the help of San Francisco agency Periera & O’Dell, has created a smokable lyrics book called ‘Rolling Words.’ According to psfk, the book features lyrics of the Doggfather’s classic songs like ‘Gin & Juice,’ ‘Nuthin’ Like a ‘G’ Thang,’ ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot,’ among others, printed on rolling paper. The book cover was made out of hemp-like material with the spine doubling as a match-striking surface. In addition, the pages are perforated for easy tearing and sharing. A limted-run of the book will be available for concertgoers who attend the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. The event takes place on April 13-15 and April 20-22, which Snoop is the co-headliner with Dr. Dre. Snoop says he created the book “So people can always remember, you can roll with an expert or you can roll with Snoop.” Images via SplashNews/Vimeo Source Hit the flipper to watch Snoop explain what his newest literary venture is all about.
Is Tim Burton’s vampire flick darker than the campy trailer had us believe? By John Mitchell Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros So we’ve been talking a lot about that gonzo first trailer for “Dark Shadows.” It’s got its defenders and its detractors and that’s all pretty well documented , so we’re not going to spill any more ink on it. But now Warner Bros. has muddied the waters a bit by releasing Danny Elfman’s full score for the film — and it’s definitely not the score to a slapstick comedy. First things first, the trailer unquestionably makes “Dark Shadows” seem like a farce. We’ve argued that’s not necessarily a bad thing — sometimes a radical overhaul is what it takes to reinvent something old for modern audiences (see: “Charlie’s Angels,” “Mission Impossible”) — but the tone set in the trailer is a complete departure from what everyone expected, while Elfman’s score, which can be heard in its entirety on WB’s Watertower Music , seems perfect for the film that fans of the TV show thought they were getting. Strange, right? Elfan’s score is rich, deep and dark. It is heavy on strings, ambient sounds and atmosphere. The drama factor is high and there’s little evidence of slapstick. Tracks like “Killing Dr. Hoffman,” “Deadly Handshake” and “Barnabas Collins Comes Home” have an almost menacing and methodic feel, and “Dumping the Body” and “Widow’s Hill” are rife with shadowy action. The music for the film is kind of amazing, actually. (Should Danny Elfman begin readying for his fifth Oscar nomination?) But what is most exceptional about it is how little it fits the film Burton had us expecting. There’s been some indication from sources close to the film that the comedic elements were dialed up for the trailer. After its initial arrival and ensuing fan backlash, co-star Chlo
A version of the 911 tape of George Zimmerman reporting suspicious behavior by Trayvon Martin before killing him was edited, NBC admitted this week. It wasn’t doctored – his words were left intact – but it’s what we didn’t hear that sheds light on the ultimately fatal Martin-Zimmerman confrontation. On March 27, NBC’s Today Show aired Zimmerman’s call to the police, featuring these words: “This guy looks like he’s up to no good … he looks black.” The recording went viral, no doubt shaping public bias against Zimmerman . But it turns out Today shortened, and thus altered the meaning of, the call: Trayvon Martin 911 Call Here is the fuller version of the recording:
Following Elise Testone singing a version of Foreigner’s “I Wanna Know What Love Is” on American Idol last night, Jennifer Lopez told the finalist that she really likes her outfit. In other words: Uh-oh. Elise could be in trouble. No panelist exactly swooned over the performance, with Steven Tyler wondering if it was the proper song choice and Randy Jackson saying there were pitch problems. Is the bottom three in Testone’s future? Critique for yourself now: Elise Testone – “I Wanna Know What Love Is” Which women did stand out on Idol this week? Our ranking of performers from this gender would be: Skylar Laine on “Wind Beneath My Wings.” Jessica Sanchez on ” How Will I Know? ” Hollie Cavanagh on “What A Feeling.” Testone’s “I Wanna Know What Love Is.”
British duo released their sophomore album, No More Idols, in the U.S. this week. By Akshay Bhansali Will Kennard and Saul Milton of Chase & Status Photo: Gareth Cattermole/ Getty Images If a jam-packed show at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival , production collaborations with Rihanna and a sold-out U.S. tour are any indication, America is thirsting for British EDM duo Chase & Status. Saul “Chase” Milton and Will “Status” Kennard released their second album, No More Idols, in the U.S. this week via Casablanca Records. The album, released in Europe in January 2011, is certified platinum in the U.K., with more than 500,000 units sold. “We’ve been over the moon with the success of No More Idols, ” Kennard told MTV News recently. “It was beyond belief for us, really, and true, tunes have been floating around here for a while, but it’s getting a proper release.” Kennard described the “proper release” as a “big, full package” with plenty of remixes, including efforts by Feed Me, Nero and Dillon Francis. The deluxe edition will include a DVD and exclusive content from their 2011 No More Idols Tour. No More Idols runs a gamut of EDM , with a bit of grime, dubstep, drum n’ bass, rock and more. It houses hit U.K. singles in “End Credits” featuring vocalist/actor/friend Plan B, rock-ish hit “Hypest Hype” featuring Tempa T, and the cinematically exquisite “Blind Faith” featuring Liam Bailey, among others. The hit album has galvanized quite a following Stateside, and Kennard said he and Milton are grateful for the unexpected attention. “It’s an exciting time for electronic dance music, and we are just proud to be a part of it,” Kennard said. “We did the tour last year, and we thought it was going to be a wash out, really, because you’re a million miles away from home. The record didn’t get picked up by radio. So on and so forth. And then you go and do these clubs and these shows, and they are sold out full to the brim with people knowing all the words and everything. And it’s a great feeling, man.” Chase & Status plan to bring their live show — often accompanied by drummer Andy Gangadeen, James Brown and vocal collaborators Rage, Tempa T, and Liam Bailey — to Indio, California’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Save for a few festival gigs, the duo now mean to hunker down in their lab and hope to complete their third album by year’s end. They are still in the early stages, tinkering around with sounds, but they say inspiration is all around them. “You can’t ignore what Skrillex has done,” Milton revealed. “We are good friends with Sonny. He’s a class act, but musically he’s just done something really incredible and just run with it. Nero as well . Odd Future, we are massive fans of what they do.” “I love Die Antwoord ,” Kennard added. “Love what they are doing. A$AP Rocky is really cool. Kill the Noise. … There is so much exciting, inspiring stuff.” What do you think of Chase & Status’ No More Idols ? Leave your comment below! Related Artists Chase & Status
Trailer for upcoming 3-D concert movie shows singer hard at work and interacting with fans. By Fallon Prinzivalli Katy Perry in the trailer for “Katy Perry: Part Of Me” Photo: Imagine Entertainment It’s here, KatyCats! Paramount Pictures debuted Katy Perry’s “Part of Me” trailer for her 3-D concert movie Tuesday night. The trailer offers a glimpse of what audiences can expect from the film, in theaters July 5. The movie gives fans a peek into the “Firework” singer’s personal life . When Perry sat down with MTV News, she said, “Literally, this film is basically like you’re seeing it from my best friend-buddy perspective.” Perry’s always been open with her fans, interacting with them on Twitter and holding meet-and-greets at every show. But the trailer reveals a side of Perry that’s sure to be new to fans. To show you what we mean, here are five key scenes from the trailer. Be Prepared As a commentator says, “She outworks everyone.” There are shots of Perry at the gym, trying on a costume at a fitting, rehearsing her dance moves and testing the wires and ropes for stage stunts. When fans arrive at the arena for a concert, they see the final production, but not all the hard work that went into putting the show together. From the looks of the trailer, audiences will gain a new respect for Perry as they see just how hard she works to give a stellar performance. “Marriage Over” After the words “Marriage Over” flash into view via a newspaper headline, there’s a heartbreaking scene of Perry looking defeated as she’s hunched over her dressing-room table. It shows that while she may work hard at international superstardom, at the end of the day, she’s human and emotional hardships affect her just like the rest of us. We commend Perry for sharing such a personal time in her life with her fans. She’s a Firework The next scene of Perry shows her getting out of a car for a red-carpet event. She has overcome her failed marriage and moved on with her career. The moment is inspirational as Perry continues to take the stage and perform regardless of what’s going on in her personal life. Her strength is sure to leave an impression on viewers. The Long Journey In between scenes of old music videos from the beginning of her career, we learn that Perry wasn’t always the California princess we know and love today. She grew up in a strict Christian home and her performances were limited to church, but she continued following her dreams. After they finally seemed to be within reach, the label she signed with dropped her. We see a younger Perry pouring her heart into her music as she records a song, only to look defeated afterwards as she says in a voiceover, “I was going through some depressing dark times, but it’s a journey.” Embracing Perry’s “Weirdness” We were hoping to see some behind-the-scenes footage of Perry and her spontaneity, and it looks like our wish came true! “Thank you so much for believing in my weirdness,” Perry yells to the audience. She says her goal when she’s performing is “just to make people smile.” What follows is a montage of Perry posing with fans (one of whom is dressed up as her nerdy alter ego, Kathy Beth Terry), sticking her tongue out at the camera and busting out some awkward dance moves. Perry’s fun-loving persona is a big reason fans are so drawn to her as a person. KatyCats will no doubt be pleased by whatever backstage antics this film contains. ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ performance has Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and even first lady Michelle Obama on their feet. By Katie Byrne One Direction at Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2012 Photo: Getty Images One Direction continued their Stateside takeover Saturday (March 31) at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards . And there was no question about their popularity: The piercing screams from the crowd when their performance was announced was enough confirmation. The boys drove the girls even wilder when just their outlines appeared before they kicked into their song “What Makes You Beautiful” and emerged onstage. Every girl in the audience — including Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Ashley Tisdale and their posse of ladies — knew all the words and sang along. Even first lady Michelle Obama couldn’t keep herself from clapping! The guys’ dapper style was in full force, with each member wearing a different black-and-white look. Ginormous white bouncy balls went flying through the crowd throughout the performance, and the OD dudes finished their set by knocking a few of the orbs back into the audience with huge grins on their faces. Even before their Kids’ Choice performance, it was pretty clear One Direction were making a big impression on America. Just a few weeks ago, OD’s Up All Night made Billboard history by becoming the first debut album by British group to enter the chart at #1 , and the album also topped the charts in 15 other countries. And their U.S. television appearances didn’t begin and end with the KCA: One Direction promoted their first album on the “Today” show earlier this month, and next week, they will be the musical guests on “Saturday Night Live.” “We obviously get American TV in the U.K., and I’ve watched ‘Saturday Night Live’ before … and ‘Saturday Night Live’ is a big, big deal, everyone knows that. And when we got invited on, we couldn’t believe it,” One Direction’s Niall Horan told MTV News last week. “Again, we haven’t spent a lot of time here, so a lot of people don’t know who we are, so to be invited on such a prestigious American show is pretty amazing.” Do you have One Direction fever? He’s about to embark on his ambitious one-man Mark Twain show , and soon enough Val Kilmer will also be a doctor, courtesy of William Woods University ! Kinda. “It’s embarrassing if you have a brother with a real doctorate. [Laughs.] I called him up without thinking — I was so excited! — and said, ‘You won’t believe it! They called me out the blue. I’m going to be just like you! Dr. Kilmer.’ There was a long pause, and I immediately realized what a mistake this phone call was.” [ Vanity Fair ]
James Franco , Selena Gomez , and Harmony Korine are down in Florida filming Spring Breakers , a movie about four coeds (including Disney tween queen Gomez) indebted to a rapping dealer named Alien (Franco) after they rob a bank to finance their spring break trip and he bails them out. All of this sounded innocent enough, at least as much as a Korine film can seem, until images of Franco emerged from the set. Some called his look Kevin Federline-esque ; rapper Riff Raff stepped forth to actually claim, proudly, that Franco’s cornrowed, blinged-out drug dealer persona was based on him . In any case, get a look at your 2011 Oscar nominee James Franco as… I don’t even know what to call this. Movieliners, caption away! Via INF Daily – click for more . Here’s a bonus look that confirms that this isn’t just a shared psychotic Friday afternoon daydream we’re all having, posted by Gomez to her Twitter account yesterday with the message “This is where the trouble begins…” (The shoot is being heavily documented both on Tumblr and Twitter , for those interested in candid shots of Gomez, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine, and Vanessa Hudgens in bikinis.) Meanwhile, Fuse TV got Riff Raff on the line to explain that he was originally offered a part by Korine before Franco came to adopt his style in the film, which also supposedly stars Gucci Mane, AKA that rapper with the ice cream cone tattoo on his face : “I sent him a few things. But all you gotta do [to see how I dress] is search through my videos. I got a pretty distinct style, with the braids, the jewelry.” Damn. Somewhere in Florida, where they’re shooting Spring Breakers, at this very moment, James Franco looks exactly like this. On the movie as a whole, Riff Raff said, “I feel really kind of privileged because I got this big actor playing the role of me but at the same time, like, damn, I wish I was there… “Even though I couldn’t be a part of this project, I’m still glad that James Franco could play the role of me. That’s like if Denzel Washington was playing the role of O.J. Simpson. Even though it’s not O.J. Simpson, O.J. Simpson still gotta be like, ‘Denzel Washington is playing me.'” Sure thing, Riff Raff. In other words: This is my new most-anticipated movie of 2013. [via INF Daily , @SelenaGomez ]
